[IC] S66 \\ NEW PROTOS! YAY
« on: Tue, 21 July 2020, 04:37:21 »
S66
Designed by sartori.works
NEW COLOUR POLL, PLEASE FILL OUT
https://forms.gle/yZ3Qktn8xpYt7QhdA

Inspiration
The S66 is a new take on the 660 layout, with the arrows as a separated cluster.
For me, the 660 layout is one of my favorites and the separated
arrows make accessing them slightly easier.
Please fill out the IC form here: https://forms.gle/UnQA5nDvM2HkEM7M7

Features
The S66 has a top and bottom fully CNC machined out of 6063 aluminium for superior build quality.
A massive brass internal weight, spanning the entire board, allows extra density for the best possible sound quality and resonance, while at the same time adding a bit of extra heft.
By default the S66 will have an included aluminium plate, or you can make an upgrade to brass. It has the ability to be burger mounted as well, with the included O rings. The plate only screws in at 4 points in the topcase, allowing for more flex and a slightly softer typing feel. The PCB, designed by jtallbean, features a centered USB-C port as well as VIA compatibility (from sillyworld) and ESD protection. In the GB, you will be able to upgrade to case foam for a new sound signature and a carrying case to protect the board.

Specifications
6063 aluminium top and bottom case
Color options for case: New color poll soon!
5 degree typing angle
Aluminium 1.5mm plate, or 1.5mm brass
Plate file made public after GB
Top or burger mount with 4 mounting points
Internal brass weight
USB-C, QMK, ESD protection
Price: $385-425 depending on config
GB Units: 40 GB units, extras after
Supported Layouts

Would be nice if the PCB support a standard bottom row too for a 6.25 spacebar.

I can't do a fully standard bottom row with all 1.25u keys, but I can do 3x1.25u, 1x6.25u, 2x1.5u.
Thanks for the feedback!

I will update some renders of the plate ASAP! Just keep in mind I might slightly change it as time goes on - adding flex cuts or possible a half plate.

would love to get a better look at the brass weight design but so far so good.

please consider adding these on the PCB:

- USB-C connector

This is a standard bottom row for 65%, 75%, 1800/CP and 96-key boards (anything with a 1.75u RShift and arrow keys). A winkey bottom row option like this would be nice to have.

In my eyes, this is more of a 65% board than a true 66-key.

The renders look early. Would like to see more renders of details like USB port shape and weight design. There’s an opportunity to make a sartorial-themed board here.

Split space compatibility?

I'm open to doing that. By split space what would your preferred configuration be?

would love to get a better look at the brass weight design but so far so good.

please consider adding these on the PCB:

- QMK support
- ESD Protection
- USB-C connector

IC form submitted.

The PCB is still in the designing phase, but it will be USB-C. It will have QMK or VIA. As for ESD protection, I am contemplating using a daughterboard. Either way there should still be some form of ESD protection.

The renders look early. Would like to see more renders of details like USB port shape and weight design. There’s an opportunity to make a sartorial-themed board here.

Yes, sadly, the renders are quite early. I will update with new renders once I get them done.

Adding a polycarb plate should be fine. I'll update the IC now. As for the death threats... that is concerning

I am definitely interested (and love the default layout) .

Listen to the feedback, but build the board you desire. There will be enough people to make this reality if you stick to the basics and do not try to please everyone.

Good luck.

Someone made an IC for a board that had rough renders; lack of usb cutout, screws, some design flaws. There were a bunch of new accounts that weren't offering criticism beyond "looks like ****" and insulting the designer. He ended up taking down the IC because of death threats being sent.

Nice simple and classy, though the seam looks quite prominent in the top render, not sure about that.

Still, I look forward to seeing more renders as I'm a sucker for that separated arrows and pair of function keys design.

Thanks for the kind words! I am talking with a manufacturer about making it cheaper to get produced. This might result in some changes (mainly the top case becoming taller and the bottom case becoming shorter - the whole thing will still be the same height, just slightly different proportions)
Ill update with more renders soon though!

First of all good luck for your first IC.

This is my opinion:

-6061 aluminium is bad espacially at this price point, you should aim at 6063.
-The design is really sleek I love it
-Plate choices is nice but not necessary ( You could decrease the choice and make the plate file public after the fulfilment)
-ISO support is nice
-Foam should be an option

Hey, thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! I am glad you like the design. Those plate choices are just for now in the IC, to gauge what people want and I will most likely offer only the 2/3 most popular (same with finishes). I may make the plate file public after the GB is over. Foam most likely will be an option in the GB. As for the aluminium - I am in touch with manufacturers to see what they think is best. Keep in mind that "under $500" is a very early estimate. I think that there is a high chance that it is going to be closer to $400 than 500. I just do not want to underestimate costs and leave a bit of room for things like QC and such.

I honestly can’t tell the difference between the 606X versions and should not be a factor as you will most like not be able to tell either. More expensive aluminum will not equal a better board. I’ve read somewhere 6063 has problems with anodization so yeah. If OP hasn’t shared what quality alu he’ll use you wouldn’t have brought it up. Just my two cents.

The price difference between the two grades is negligible. I will go with 6063 as I personally have heard of better experiences with it, but like you said, the physical difference will probably be very small too.

I'm glad you like the design. I most likely wont offer hotswap, as the demand isn't really enough, there is still a slim chance though. As for the layout, I will make the plate/pcb files public after GB, so you can edit the layout as much as you like.

PROTO UPDATE
Both the plates and PCBs have arrived, and I am typing on the s66 right now! I really am enjoying the feel and layout. I will update tomorrow morning with sound tests and photos.
There were a couple improvements that will be made in the final board:
1) The USB cutout will be bigger, allowing for more flex without damaging the physical port, and allowing for more room if you choose to burger mount it with the included o rings.
2) The spacebar is a little loud, so there will be flex cuts in the final plate around the spacebar.
Both changes have been made as of now, and I am finalizing the details for the GB.
Thanks everyone for the continued support, and I can't wait to get this board out to you guys!

The plate options will be Aluminium or a Brass upgrade. Plate files will be made public after, so you can edit them as much as you like.
Any information posted in an update like this will overwrite info in the main post.

Hi! I really like this, but there a few things I’d want need to really sell me on it. Ok, first off, I need (want, don’t actually need, but want) a 4.5mm to 5.0mm (brass) plate. Second, would be a like a black PCB mask. Not needed at all, but looks quite cool/nice. Don’t mind that one, it’s just a thing I’d like to see! Next would be considering to increase spots. 30 units + extras is very, very limited for a board, especially for over 10,000 views. I’ll say I understand that it’s hard to work on keyboard designing and GB’ing, that you got this, but I don’t understand. Please disregard my 3rd request if it is too much. Last are just a few things about your prototype! What’s the front end/lip height? What’s the weight of your built proto?

Thanks for reading, I’m off to go fill out your form!

Edit: Should have filled out the form first!

Hey man, thanks for the feedback.
The PCB mask will be black, just not in the protos because it increased production time and cost. I may increase the GB to 40+ extras because then I can color match two colors as well. I am not sure about offering a thick plate in GB, I will make a file for it that I will release, but it is very hard to offer more and more options in GB. The front height is a bit under 18mm, and it is 1.5kg with an aluminium plate. Brass plate will be around 1.6-1.7 or more if you do end up using a 5mm one.

Thanks for the fast response, it was good waking up to this. Good to hear that the extra style will be added to the PCB! Anyways, I completely understand not being able to do the thick brass plate, since not everyone would buy it, making the GB, a "harder". I just came up with this idea: Maybe you could add a "Upgrade to thicker brass weight. From what you said, it sounds like the weight is very large, but from the weight, not as thick as I expected. Unless, of course, your prototype doesn't have the brass weight. Lastly, you could add a "Extra PCB/Plate" option.

Thanks for reading!

There will be an extra pcb/plate option of course. Making the brass weight thicker means that there is less space under the pcb, resulting in the PCB hitting bottomcase if typing with too much force. I know 1.5kg doesn't sound like much, but it isn't a very big board and I can assure you it feels very dense and high quality.

I saw this board on discord and searched for a few hours to find you. Love this board and, as someone else said, am a sucker for the split arrow key cluster.

My questions were:
1. Can photos/renders of the keyboard with keycaps to be added?
2. Can we expect this to go into the gb phase before the end of this year? I love this board and would love to be a part of it.
3. Even though there is a weight inside the board, do you have any plans to make a logo on the bottom of the board?

I have been scouring this site for almost a year waiting for the perfect board. I think I finally found it. Would love for this to be my first gb. Keep it up!

I'll try do some renders with keycaps, still figuring them out though. Once 2nd proto arrives I will make a GB date, it should definitely be before the end of the year! Right now there is not a logo, as I want to keep the outside branding-free. The only logo as of now is one on the plate that you wont be able to see.

Thanks!

Hi, I got the proto in black but that will not be an option in the groupbuy. There will however, be a grey option (slate) which is colourmatched to pantone 11c.

Re: split space, a 3-key layout with the small key in the middle is nice! E.g. 2.75-1.25-2.25, or 2.75-2-2.25. 3-1-2.25 could be cool too, and is fairly unique.

Do you think you can post photos of the boards in their final colors once you get them? I can't wait to see what they actually look like under natural light.

Also, can we expect to see this board show up on MechGroupBuys?

Price is $385 base, not finalised but I am looking at possibly getting it lower. O rings are optional, you can do burger mount or normal top mount. When next proto arrives I’ll try do a comparison!

Probably not in this group buy, however I may make pcb files open source after so you can get your own produced. Plates will of course be open sourced after GB concludes.

It isn't the 4/4 like you mentioned, It has two on the top and two on the bottom to provide some more flex.

The board looks amazing in the photo/render (can't tell). Nice clean design, very geometric, which I like. I assume this will be sold in a raffle format, which makes me a little sad because the chance seems so low...

A little request for the IC: please add more pictures of the bottom case, I would love to see this board in its full glory ;)
A breakdown render of the board would also be nice for people in a hurry to understand the structure of the board, and a nice picture before the text really would leave a lasting impression.

Also, I would double down on the Navy/Deep Navy color for anodization.

Can you do alu/brass plate typing test , it doesn't make sense to offer these options in the GB and then have a different typing plate material in your sound test

Can you also show where the plate mounts to top case? I want to see where the 4 mounting points are

When I was doing the first sound test the plates weren't finalised. Will do the proper sound tests when the better proto arrives!
When I was designing the case I felt that having only the four mounting point would have some nicer flex on things like alu. May send to a streamer to test out against other top mount/burger mount boards

Would be nice if the PCB support a standard bottom row too for a 6.25 spacebar.
I can't do a fully standard bottom row with all 1.25u keys, but I can do 3x1.25u, 1x6.25u, 2x1.5u.
