[IC] Canon60 - A Custom 60% Case Final Interest Check
« on: Mon, 07 October 2019, 23:59:29 »
CANON60 IC Updated(02/01/2020)

Hi Everyone,

This is the final interest check before the group buy. Prototypes have come in and final preparations for the group buy are being made.

Introducing the Canon60. This is a hi-profile case comprised of a metal casing encased in acrylic.

I created this keyboard in an attempt to create a floating type design. I also personally like the combination of acrylic and polished metals.
In order to create a clean floating look, there are minimal screws in this design. (Screws are only used to fasten the PCB to the inner case. The rest of the case will be held together with neodymium magnets.

Structure of the overall design:

Overall Kit Details:

  • Complete Case Kit w/o PCB = $325.00 (Excludes Shipping)
    • Brass PCB Plate:
      • 1.5 mm thick
      • Color Options: Gold PVD, Rose Gold PVD, Black Electroplated
      • PCB plate supports the following layouts
      • Badge (Music Note)
        • Color Options: Gold PVD, Rose Gold PVD, Black Electroplated
      • Angle Steel Blocks
      • Adhesive Rubber feet
    • Additional Brass PCB Plate = + $40.00
    • Additional Music Note Badge = + $15.00
    • Additional Angle Blocks = + $10.00
    • Optional 60% PCB: DZ60 by KBDFans = + $38.00
    ______________________________________________________________________
    Additional Details:

    • Fastening Method: N52 Neodymium magnets will be the main fasteners for this case. The prototype has no problem staying together with these magnets. The magnets are also not so strong that it is too difficult to take the case apart.
      • Color options for neodymium magnets will be silver or gold.
    • Total Weight:
      • About 2.5kg with switches and plate.
      • About 2.1kg for just the case.
    • Case does support any standard 60% tray mount PCB, so you can use your own PCB and plate if a specific layout is not supported.

I do find this very nice. I will definitely follow this with great interest. Maybe there should be screws to hold in the acrylic, not just the magnets. Mostly as a second option for those that want to keep everything extra secure. But overall, it is still a really good board for me.

You do understand, that you'll have to use something like 420 or 440C for your steel block, right?
Just a note. Interesting concept, but looks a bit bulky.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've been looking at different materials to use and 400 series stainless steel seems to be the best bet so far.

Looks better than plain alu cases to me  :p
I'm not sure about the tray mount plate tho, they feel/sound pretty inconsistent

Something interesting and different from the usual gasket mount aluminium boards with brass weights that come out every month

    I dig :thumb:

Watching this very closely. Will you be interested in doing different layouts in the future? Say TKL or 75%?

Definitely interested in doing a TKL later.

Will look into polycarb. But I think for the most part Acrylic has properties better suited for this project. Did you mean the frost polycarb?

I like the cleaner feel of the updated back logo. Do you plan on making the PCB an optional add-on? I'd be pretty content without one tbh.

Yep. I plan on making the PCB an add on option as I originally wanted this case able to fit any standard 60% PCB.

Will the plate allow all the layouts permitted on the DZ60. I am a 65% user and so would like to have a plate option that allows 5 1U keys on the right of the space bar.

I'm not entirely sure myself. I've only tested linear on the prototype for now, but that was with the older version with the low profile inner case. I'm sure the newer design will have a much different sound profile as there are less openings and the inner case is overall bigger in the updated version. Once I get the new prototype in I will make sure to do a sound test.

Will the plate allow all the layouts permitted on the DZ60. I am a 65% user and so would like to have a plate option that allows 5 1U keys on the right of the space bar.

I did think about including those options in my plate but I personally didn't like the lack of material that that would create in the overall plate so no, the plate I am offering will not fit that layout. But, this case will fit any other plate that fits the dz60 so if you did want to go with that layout you still could, you just wouldn't have the color options that I am providing for only the plate. I think kbd fans does sell a gold brass plate that should fit that layout.

The first prototype the case was lower than expected. The switches do not show in the new one.

So happy to get an update about this project. I'm super excited about this. Are the magnets in the acrylic gold in color or will we have options for those as well? And do you have an estimate about when you'd like this group buy to happen and the potential number of boards you're willing to make? Or is it too early to ask those questions..

edit: I just re-read the IC. My bad. lol

I want to start the group buy sometime later this month or early March. So far I would like to produce at least 25 boards but depending on how the group buy does that number can go up.

Is vertical height a concern with the design? I'm concerned about the need for a wrist rest when using this keyboard as I like to rest my wrist on the table.
Any comparison shots with a standard tray mount board like a Tofu/Klippe side by side vs the prototype.
Thanks and definitely innovative in terms of design and good luck with the project!

I really like how it looks, should I be worried about keeping it from getting scratches or little abrasions? I'd hate to have scratches on something that looks so good.

Thanks for the feedback! The case is about 2.5cm high. Personally for me, using a wrist rest helps when I am laying the case flat on the desk without stands.

Yes, since it is clear acrylic, you should probably keep it away from harder materials to prevent any scratches. I found that minor scratches are not very visible on the prototype. I think for worst case scenario you can use a polish/polisher to remove any scratches from the acrylic.

Do the angle blocks get off easly when you push the keyboard while using it? (I'm concerned about the problem that massdrop ctrl keyboard had. The angle blocks should be hold tight.)

Hey. The angle blocks are not super tightly secured as it attached by the bottom magnets. However, I found that the combination of the weight of the board and the rubber feet makes it pretty secure and does not fall off easily with regular use.
