[IC] KIRA TKL
« on: Mon, 14 May 2018, 11:17:43 »
First, some photos.

more photos

KIRA80 or KIRA TKL is a continuation of the KIRA series of keyboards designed by thesiscamper. We are looking to offer this board for GB in the coming weeks, time and date tbc.

So far here are some possible details:

1. Colours:

Same as EXS offerings, namely black, space grey etc. We might reduce the number of colours but that's tbc.

2. What's included:

PCB by TGR Keyboards, case by thesiscamper, possible numpad included as a set. Maybe a TKL carry bag, depending on supplier's price.

3. Price:

TBC, we're working out the details on this one.

4. WILL THERE BE WKL?

of course lol

4. ISO ISO ISO?

Yes, separate ANSI and ISO plates

5. Plate material?

Same as EXS, brass/poly/alu IIRC

6. Payment?

Still Shopify unfortunately, PayPal has not released my funds since Sept of 2017

7. How can I get it?

Probably raffle, or FCFS tbc.

8. Degree

Well 8 degrees

I'll update this OP as we get closer to GB date and have more details, for now, feel free to ask questions and express your hype for THIS AWESOME TKLLLLLLLLLLLLL  :p

What about a Winkeyless case option? It’d be great for covering with nice BSP Keycaps.

You already know, I'm a fan of your designs, including this one!  Not filling out the IC form, because no money!  But will be following the progress along with interest.
How about doing the logo engraving between Esc and F1 instead of above the arrow cluster?

I think the logo placement is fine as it is. Also not to downplay the fantastic work beaming is doing on GH recently, but the design is by thesiscamper :)

I think you're referring to the Kira96 - that was by the same designer but produced and ran by input club. The first Kira board (that I'm aware of) that was produced was the 60.

Yes sir, or FCFS, still trying to see how we can accommodate more people.

Heck yes! :D

Does the PCB support ISO?

We will have separate ANSI and ISO plates

Nope, same factory as 60 and EXS

Also, no diffusers, we both don't like diffusers generally speaking and it'll break the facet look thesis is going for.

How does this even make sense? It's 2018 I can sort and remove dupes?

We're gonna have a proto numpad done first just to make sure everything fits, the PCB for the numpad is also by TGR.

Solution: Run this as a raffled FCFS. Raffle off 100 spots and then for those 100 it's FCFS for 50 boards. Everyone loses!

I think your questions about raffle styled buys could be better posted in another thread or forum, since this IC thread is meant for the discussion and questions about the board. If you have any questions about these types of buys feel free to look through the GB section rules for more info. If someone really wants to go through the trouble to make 5 accounts, 5 ips and talk to themselves come shipping invoice it's a simple matter of refunding that order, and there are bigger problems if someone wants to drop so much money.  If this is something that irritates you greatly, you are welcome to not join the buy, since this TKL was meant to be a private buy at first and your attitude does not help any of us here.

Thanks Beaming and Thesis! Excited for the EXS to come out and hope to get in on the TKL.

Will there be the option to mix top and bottom case colors, or would that not look good with the geometry of the sides? I’d be down for a dark grey color like you suggested here: https://imgur.com/a/5D5Yg

We might consider locking down colour combinations to better ensure anodizing quality from the factory, so I think that won't happen. The space grey looks pretty similar IMHO under certain light conditions so that might also be a choice here just like the EXS buy.

I'm asking, what stops someone from doing that in "raffle" type buys?

I make 5 unique emails with 5 different IPs with a new geekhack account on each IP. I could be 4 people in this thread just role playing, talking to myself. How do you know?

PCB:

We're doing a custom PCB, working with yuktsi on this so it won't fit A.87 unfortunately since we're reducing the size of it slightly.

Poly:

Nope on that, poly melts too quickly and the screw holes get threaded/worn out really fast.

On the buy:

I'm currently shipping out some Canoes from that buy, so once that is over I'll be able to give a more concrete date, but as of now I'm aiming to get this started in about 2 weeks. In the meantime, we're looking to reduce the colours offered but increase the quantity and maybe do a FCFS / general GB on monokei. Maybe say, 100 units for TKL and 50 numpads or something like that.

In terms of plate options it should be the same as all KIRA buys, so brass/poly/alu.

Do note that the matte grey was a proto finish and did not feel good, so it would probably look more like the previous KIRAs.

Not at the moment since it's TKL, should be easy to find wrist rests.

Yup, it feels kinda weird, like some anti-slippery surface. There is resistance when sliding your fingers over it, but not due to roughness. It's hard to describe.

You will need to source the switches, stabilizers and keycaps separately to complete the build. Soldering is required for the switches.

So just a heads-up, we have about 200 people who filled up the form, maybe some dupes here and there so it's closer to 180.

I'm trying to get a few additional things confirmed before the GB starts, so apologies if this looks delayed. It will be well worth it :)

Here's how the numpad would look like:

Well, if you're experimenting, I think this might be an overly expensive way to do it. Maybe start out with a cheap used TKL and solder in some MX black in place of what it comes with? That will also give you practice in soldering.

Usually hate any sort of logo above the arrow cluster, but I dig this!

Gonna be roughly about the same afaik. Which is fair because both boards are some serious metal

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that it will be the same, if not more expensive than the EXS. With rising prices of keyboards, as well as the metal they're made with, prices definitely aren't getting better.

We're gonna pay extra to have the TKL done proper, given the sides compared to the EXS which is harder to machine/anode.

Any info on pricing yet? The July 3rd date is when it's going to start, or end raffle entries?

Not yet. I'm guessing it's just black, silver, grey, purple, and maybe red or navy. Could be wrong though.

Anyone know how many are for sale?
