what do you guys think?  Put the HD activity LED or the PC power LED behind the ESC key on my Das?
What's the purpose of either? Also, why not both?

I think the HD activity would be amazing on the ESC key. Looking forward to your build log and pictures Melvang!

Because the Ti 3d skull keycap I have on the ESC key has clear eyes for an LED

Where can i find a Switch Top Remover Tool :)

The_Beast made a run of them and the thread can be found here. I heard a rumor that he'd be doing a R2 but he's super busy between his GH60 case, lube station, and other stuff. If you see this Beast, I'm sorry I spoke for you in advance ^__^

I've also heard that tweezers can work in a pinch.

Also, Melvang, I love that key. Maybe you can fit one LED per eye? Also, I didn't mean to come off as rude. It just seems weird to use either of those two things as an LED indicator. HDD activity is going to happen like ALL the time. Also, if your PC is on, I'm sure you'll know it...

It's all good, just wasn't sure if you had seen the thread.

Should this work: If a KMAC Number Pad is properly set up with codes for numpad keys, shouldn't I theoretically be able to hold Alt on a Phantom and press the numpad keys to get unicode characters? And if that should work, then that would mean that the numpad was set up with regular number codes, a la the number row?

Numpad and numbers row have different scan codes. Even when the numpad has correct numpad scan codes, some separate numpad and keyboard combos are still super finicky about letting you enter in unicode. Like when I had my Leopold FC200 and goldtouch numpad I don't remember them playing particularly well together. Though with 2 things that are user programmable, I would guess if both had firmware from the same base, it would probably make them work nicer together.

Right. Crap, that really sucks. I suppose one thing I could do to work around is to add an Alt key to the K pad. Time to investigate. Thanks, lysol!

Need suggestions for a keyboard that is going to be a gift.  Going to be getting 2 for my aunt and uncle.  I am not exactly sure what she does but I know that about 2/3 of her keys are now blank just due to the heavy use.  He runs some web server stuff from the house.

I was thinking of getting 2 Days Keyboards one with blues and the other with browns and let them decide who wants which switch.

Any comments/suggestions?

If you've got some boards, bring those over to let em try different switches out and see what they like. And then I'd get Ducky because I really think the glossy finish on the Das boards are terrible. Filco might be nice too if you can afford one of those. But Das boards are nice quality, I just have a personal gripe with the finish.

Consider the KBT Pro at Techkeys.us.  Also be prepared for them to reject mechanical keyboards.  Some people just like their quiet, mushy rubber domes.

You'll have to spend around $800-1000 for a Full Metal Filco; Full Metal Filco is the name of the board that Tipo33 has. There aren't many metal TKL cases that I know of that are out there. Photekq and Boost will be offering some soon. The last set of metal caps I saw were for sale from longweight and were going for $600. Then you'll probably have to get an HID Liberator and mod the switches to have heavier springs to combat the weight of the caps.

TLDR: If you're worried about just the case being expensive, the rest of the Full Metal board won't be much cheaper.

Thanks for the link! I PM'ed him. I don't think that controller would work with a MiniLa. I guess my best bet would be to go with a Teensy?

It's hard to find naked keyboards without caps. I saw a pic of the poker2 with 1 or 2 caps off somewhere, but I can't really tell if it has a plate that allows removable top switch covers. I doubt it though.

This is what I was thinking of the Poker 2 plate: where did those cheap black Vortex plates come from not too long ago? As far as I knew, Poker X never had a plate. I'm thinking maybe those were Poker 2 plates. In which case, no easy open openings.

Actually, now that I think about it again, poker2 supports LEDs, and even the ones that don't come with LEDs has traces and holes for the LEDs, which means it doesn't make sense to make the plate for removable switches.

The current poker is PCB mounted. You'll have to desolder. You can only do solderless swaps with custom plates.

I don't believe this is true. With PCB mounted switches, you can disassemble them without desoldering. The custom plate just allows you to reach the part of the switch to take it apart, which is normally blocked by the plate, whereas it's perfectly open on a PCB Mount. If I'm wrong, please correct me, though.

I've seen a video done, and I presume that if there'e enough space between the switches on a plate-mount board, there's enough space on a PCB-mounted board...

on a completely unrelated note, I hate trackpads.

With the KBC Poker X, since there is no plate, you can open the switches without desoldering. I have done it many times.

Also true for most Cherry keyboards, since they are usually PCB mounted, also.
