Folks,

It turns out that I live within 20 minutes of edsyn. Would people be interested in ordering their products through the geekhackers store at slightly lower prices and shipping costs then the edsyn online store?

i can ask, but we're probably just going to have to produce our own stickers to put on them. they're not set up for OEM production.

one thing i did learn is how to test your soldapullt for good function

1) cock the plunger
2) block the intake (bottom) nozzle with your finger TIGHTLY
3) hit the plunger release button without unblocking the nozzle.

the soldapullt should completely hold vacuum for about 1-2 seconds and then slowly release. i suspect we can improve this actually by lubing the o-rings with krytox VPF. (that is, improve the vacuum holding time).
you can tell whether your piston is holding vacuum by watching the steel rod that lives inside the plunger spring. that should not move from full engaged for 1-2s and then it should slowly rise.

if your soldapullt cannot hold vacuum for 1-2s, then you need a rebuilt kit. they are simple to install and cheap and if i stock the soldapullts, i will also stock the rebuild kits.

another plus is that IF there's enough demand, i should be able to beat edsyn's pricing with no minimum order price and significantly cheaper international shipping (since they only ship UPS). further, you'll be able to combine your soldapullt order with krytox, usb multimode adapters and anything else i end up stocking.

PLEASE speak up if you would be interested in this, especially if you're international, as that's a big market that edsyn itself is having trouble breaking into because of their small size and how prolific the crappy fakes are.

i will ask when i make contact with their primary salesperson next week. i suspect we will need to show some volume to get them to do this though. blue and gold is _their_ historical brand's color and they're (rightfully) quite proud of it :)

define cheap deal

rebuild kits are incredibly easy for me to stock. i can do that no problem. each one comes with a tip, tip holder and pre-lubricated o-ring. i don't believe the spring is included as it's not load bearing but i'll have to double check that. that said, there are a lot of 10 year old soldapullts out there that probably aren't pulling optimum vacuum but could for like < 5$

MOQ for custom colored soldapullts is probably somewhere in the range of 1000.
wonder how much for the DS017?
it is a function of quantity

The Edsyn AS196 SilverStat is the one to get it is a little big but has the best suction. They also have a gold anniversary model AS196-G.

the gold and silvers are the same piston size as the standard ds107. they might keep a slightly better seal because of the metal barrel, but the difference is marginal at best. the metallic barrel is used for conductivity -- the silver and gold are ESD safe. but barrel dimensions and piston travel completely determine the vacuum generated by the piston, and they are the same dimensionally as the ds017

here's an example of an o-ring that desperately needs replacement ;)

the insane thing is this sucker literally just kept on keeping on despite looking like this. HAH!

but seriously, i want to make the real deal available to internationals as well as people who are looking at knock-off products for cost reasons if at all possible.

kester 44 is ezpz. i'll most likely buy huge spools and re-spool though, if that's ok with you guys. 1lb of solder is more than anyone's going to use in their lifetime AND it's expensive to ship.

i have a very cool idea i ran by my edsyn POC that could get us geekhack branded soldapullts. they would be based on the as196 rather than the ds017 though.

I think I need some o-ring grease and maybe a replacement o-ring for my Soldapullt.  I got it used and old, and while it cleaned up really well, it doesn't hold vacuum well anymore.  At least when I tried to use it for desoldering, it was not very useful, and I had to revert back to a RS desoldering iron.

Small amounts of Kester 44 sound really good too!

oh, the store is shockingly close to ready. i had to take some product shots and make some artwork but i did that this weekend, and then a tiny bit of code needs to be written so that there's a proper shopping cart. in the meantime, all the products i've been advertising are in final form and can be ordered via PM. ironically, i've spent so much time prepping packs and filling orders that i wasn't able to get around to the store art assets until this weekend. we're also waiting for the production server to go up; the person who is doing that is slammed right now, and i just accidentally referred a huge account to him (oops) that is only going to slam him harder.

in short, just pm me if you need something.

i'm a computer scientist i have no idea what marketing is or even what the word means ;)

the order was verbally made on friday. there are some docs that need to be done, and i need to convince my POC that my crazy new product idea is going to work. HAH!

anyway yah, we will be stocking edsyn products. they are awesome and understand our mission perfectly. i see many great things in the future.
