[GB] Time TKL - GB closed

Dear buyers in Time TKL group buy,

Some one have already received messages from DHL and should will receive the keyboard in this week.

At this moment I'd like to say thank you all for your support in this group buy.

Time TKL is the second keyboard we developed. It's a little crazy, yet special.
It's so special that not everyone like, but I'm glad I made it happen because you like it and joined the group buy.

Many buyers in Orange TKL group buy also joined this one. I'm so glad that I gain your trust.

Special thanks to zFrontier. They were very professional and patient through all the phases in this group buy and make sure everything goes well.

There are also three unexpected issues in the gb/keyboard.

  • The secret gift for founder editions we intended to give were custom-made desk mats. We changed our mind at last because of lack of time. The final secret gifts are not so special but are pricier than the original one.
  • The brass weights were planned to be electroplated. However, the factory found that the small brass parts will be burnt to black with normal electroplating. We decided to only polish the brass surface lightly and keep the raw brass parts as is. You can compare the electroplated brass and raw brass small parts. If your brass parts are oxidized in the future, the recommended treatment for them are applying a mixture of lemon juice + baking soda. You can also contact me if you’re not satisfied with the brass parts.
  • The design of top case is a little lack of consideration that the assembled plate is pretty difficult to be screwed in the top case. You'll need to find the correct angle to put together the plate and top case, which is tricky. A easy way to solve this problem is to solder switches while the plate is attached to the top case.

At last, we'll be responsible for all possible problems. Feel free to ask me if you get any problems. My email address is runninghack[at]gmail[dot]com. Joining our discord channel is also an easy way to find me.

Is this BootMapper like Orange was?

The PCBs use atmega32a as the controller which means they can be programmed using bootmapper client. They were supplied by another team who makes PCBs.

BTW, I'm working on a 32u4 or 32u2 version as well. I can make the schematics and TMK/QMK firmware but I'm not good at making the PCB file. This won't be an option in this GB but I'll work it out some day at least for myself.

Oh boy, really excited to get my hands on this!

Just a question: Looks like the PCB supports split right shift and split backspace, and it seems like the MX plate supports that configuration, but does the alps plate supports that configuration? I think I remember senter mentioned that the alps plate is not universal in the IC thread, just wondering if anything changed between then and now.

Upgrading to brass weight will cost around $92 or so. All the 11 pieces will be brass.

The PCB was designed by another team and this is the first time they make ALPS compatible PCBs. Honestly I'm not 100% sure what layouts it will support without problems. For now it's only safe to say it will support WKL 84 key layout. We'll figure it out the compatibility and make it fully tested of course.

I just have ordered Time TKL and have some questions about it.
1. what is the difference between 'extra time logo aluminum plate' and 'extra regular MX compatible plate'.
2. As I ordered mine through en.Zfroniter, how can I select the color and what key settings I want(I want 86 with 6.25 spacebar)
3. From the post, it is said that the GB starts at 8PM for EDT which is 9AM for KST(next day). But I have found that the thread was already opened at 8:57. I really wanted a Founders' edition as I could not afford to buy Orange TKL.

Thank you for your order!

1. 'time logo aluminum plate' is the 'Time' logo on the front.  'regular MX compatible plate' is the switch plate
2. There're options for colors. They didn't add the layout options but now they're adding the options now. Please contact the customer service of zFrontier to confirm your layout. Here's the email you can send emails to: support@zfrontier.com
3. The launch time should be correct. I guess you mixed up EST and EDT.

The first several orders didn't have layout options (84, 86, 87). The default setting is 87 WK layout. If you're the first people who placed orders and want to choose 84 or 86 layouts, please contact support@zfrontier.com

Actually I don't know how people call these three layouts. I check some posts and found they just call them 84, 86, and 87 layouts. That's how the options show on zfrontier currently. Tell me if it's not correct.

87 = no blockers
86 = chinese winkeyless with small blockers (6.25u)
84 = og winkeyless with big blockers (7u)

Also senter can we have the option of alps plate right off the main order?

87 = no blockers
86 = chinese winkeyless with small blockers (6.25u)
84 = og winkeyless with big blockers (7u)

Also senter can we have the option of alps plate right off the main order?

ALPS plates are only available as an extra part which cost $22. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Actually I don't know how people call these three layouts. I check some posts and found they just call them 84, 86, and 87 layouts. That's how the options show on zfrontier currently. Tell me if it's not correct.

I think it's WKL without blockers.

Thanks homies, Delirious' explanation makes perfect sense, it was just hard for me to picture it without actual images portraying the different layouts as I'm not super familiar with the nomenclature.

86 key it is then!

I am confused about the logo. There is an option to buy an extra brass logo plate, but no option to upgrade the logo to brass. Does this mean that logo is brass by default? If not, can you add an upgrade option, I don't want to pay extra for the aluminum logo that I will never use.

Thanks.

The default logo plate is in aluminum. The only way to get a brass "Time" logo is to buy an extra one. It's not able to add all customization options on the website. And we're not able to add that option for you. Sorry about that. The aluminum logo only sells for $10.

wondering how heavy the keyboard roughly after assembly?

top and bottom cases + aluminum plate + aluminum weight = 3.7 lbs

It will be how heavier with brass weights of course.

We didn't measure it after assembly.

The first several orders didn't have layout options (84, 86, 87). The default setting is 87 WK layout. If you're the first people who placed orders and want to choose 84 or 86 layouts, please contact support@zfrontier.com

SO if I order now, do I still have a chance of getting the founder edition ones?

The first 38 orders will be founder editions. You can ask zFrontier to confirm what version you will get. I don't know the current number. There were about 10 old customers contacted me about their purchase. They will get founder editions as well but they are not included in the 38 orders.

Thank you for the professional review. This is a prototype version. The CNC and anodizing will be even better in the final products. The design of little tip has been changed a little bit to make it stronger. /u/zF_IndianaJones or I can send you a replacement of that part.

BTW, nice stickers on your table :)

Hey Senter, do you have any photos of what color/shade the brass weights are? Are they going to be the same color as the brass weight on the Fox Orange?
I'm trying to figure out how good they would look with a black case.

Hello, I am considering joining this group buy, however on zFrontier there doesn't seem to be an option of picking the color when adding it to the cart. Is this intentional? If so how do we specify what colors we want?

Is this the page you were looking at? There're 4 options of colors as I can see. The second option is for the color of top/bottom cases. The 3rd option is for the bottom parts, plate, and logo plate.

Everything is going well so far. The production will be finished late this month or early next month. After that we'll examine the quality then ship all the boards to zFrontier. zFrontier will double check the quality and ship the boards to you.

Also is there any picture of the kit?

We've sent all the boards to zFrontier for more than one week. The buyers in the Chinese GB have already received their boards. zFrontier checked more carefully on the international ones since this shipping will be expensive if problems happen.

I just asked zFrontier about the status. They told me that boards will be shipped in two days.

Here're some photos shared by Chinese buyers:

Oh man, I wish I could have jumped on this.

Any plans to bring back the Time keeb, maybe in other form factors? Or will your next project be completely different?

Would also love another run, in any form factor/layout, really. This keyboard is incredibly special.

Time TKL was a little crazy even for me. I'm glad I tried to make such a special keyboard come true.

I'm considering to make the next one a little regular. Orange/Pizza in 75% layout might be worth trying since I've been asked for many times.

Yeah, that is the most gorgeous "rear end" of a keyboard I've seen. It would have been super insane if it had moving parts and worked as a clock but it's for the better that it didn't, lol.

I'll be keeping an eye out on your other projects and patiently waiting for another Time Keeb, if you decide to run it again :)

As someone who also ordered the brass weight, the scratches are really concerning. Are all the brass weights like this?

For an extra $100, it would be pretty disappointing if that is the case.

Brass is a very soft metal, and (to my knowledge, i'm no machinist) scratches like this are common on machined brass parts.

I'm sorry for the scratches of brass parts. Totally 28 sets of brass weights were sold. We'll take care of these orders. Aluminum parts don't have problems AFAIK.

Reasons of scratches: The original plan was bead blasting + anodizing. Bead blasting will remove the scratches, anodizing will provide a beautiful finish. As I explained, anodizing has some problems on small brass parts, only bead blasting makes the surface dark and won't look good. Another method we can use is polishing, however the factory can't polish small parts very well.

We choose polishing at last because We believe this is the best option. Since these are raw brass parts, you can polish them manually with fine sand papers. It's not difficult to make them look incredible. If it's unacceptable to you, here are the options I can provide:

1) Replacing the brass parts with anodized aluminum parts. I'll cover all the costs and refund you the price difference.
2) Replacing the long straight brass parts. I've talked with the factory about the issues. They said they can try to make the two long straight brass parts better. They can't do anything to the other brass parts. I'll cover all the costs.
3) Returning the brass parts to the factory for bead blasting. The bead blasted brass parts will look dark but without scratches. Polishing bead blasted brass parts will ruin the finish. I'll cover all the costs.

I didn't make this GB perfect but I'll try my best to fix it. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Send me an email with the
  • photos of your parts
  • screenshot of your order
  • text says "I don't want to polish the parts by myself"
  • the option you want to choose

Thank you

Personally, I like the brass weight, which is more matchable with the retro punk style of TIME kbd. It may not be a good idea to make it too bright.

It is an impressive product, which took a very short time to make and send out. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

To the one who prefers a brighter brass weight, you may rub it down with sandpaper, it is not a hard working though  :) :) :)

Got my Time TKL! It looks gorgeous besides the imperfections of the brass parts. Here are some pictures: (pictures taken using my phone, sorry for the poor quality)

Some close up of imperfections:

187320-2187322-3187324-4187326-5

Question: Any idea how to remove that fingerprint stain here:
187320-6
I tried wiping it with cloth towel but nothing seemed to worked, not sure why :(

Edit: Senter, what is your email address? I have some questions about the options offered to remedy this plus some problems with my order. never mind, found it!

Got mine too, my first custom. As a mechanical watch lover, this was the perfect board I simply have to get. Was not sure about the color combo when I ordered but I have to say it is spectacular in person. So spectacular that have decided to build it with Tealios to match the case.

Just got mine. I am super disappointed by the execution of this. The brass parts are just a mess and show tons of machining marks. The plate is scratched and stained. This is really not even close to acceptable.

Look at the QWERTY row on the right between what would be the "[" and "]" keys (weird stain) and the space bar row (scratch). Some other stains as well. Honestly keys cover the plate, so the much bigger deal is the brass front and back parts and the TIME logo. Really bad machining marks all over that you can't wipe off. Same issue as with the other guy who posted his black/brass unit above me.

Just received mine as well, a black/brass combo. First thing be careful when taking it out of the box; the screws for one of the brass inserts were loose so when I flipped it over right-side-up the brass piece slipped out. Oops, but the piece is ok! The anodizing looks and feels amazing (although this is my first alum case so take that with a grain of salt). No issues with the alum plate, but I am seeing the same issues as those above for the brass. I'll reserve final judgement for after I attempt to clean up the machining marks and the splotches in the brass polish, but overall I am pretty happy with the result

On that note, does anyone have a recipe for cleaning up the brass?

Unfortunately you won't be able to get rid of the machining marks in the 2nd picture without a harsher abrasive; probably best to keep it as is.

Cleaning wise, just isopropyl alcohol will do fine for pictures 1/3/4.

2000 grit sandpaper like this will remove scratches from the brass parts.

If you don't want to do it by yourself, here are the options: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=92349.msg2552663#msg2552663

Alright I can give that shot plus cleaning with some isopropyl alcohol and post back with some hopefully positive results.

--- Update ---

Ok! Using 91% isopropyl alcohol with a dish washing sponge, I was able to clean most of the splotches left on the brass. Here are my previous 'before' pictures with an 'after' shot. I know it's not perfect but I'm an amateur and we're working with brass here :)

I'm currently soaking the 2000 grit paper, since every resource I see online says to do it. Most recommend soaking overnight so I'll try it after 15 minutes tonight and if it doesn't work out soak overnight and try again tomorrow.

Thanks for offering some options for the brass issue, senter. I'm still waiting for my Time TKL to arrive, hopefully it'll be okay with some polish.

In retrospect, I wish the communication for this GB was better. Many buyers would have appreciated learning about the change for the brass finish before the kits were sent out. Perhaps this is something that could be improved for future GBs? Personally I might have wanted a different colored keyboard if I knew that brass wasn't going to work out.

I hate to be a buzzkill, but the more pics I see of the other boards the angrier I am that black/brass buyers weren't warned about how badly ours would suck and given the option to switch. This just isn't right.

well, copper is copper. In essence it is better than alluminum. I am thinking if I should try to make the copper parts look aged.
Idk how well google can translate this link: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.3-c.w4002-15833883722.99.473879ecnZ9IFa&id=12625996815
but basically such solution can make copper and brass look like antique. So in the very first pic, the brighter ones turn into the darker ones after being sunk into the solution.
I feel that this will definitely solve the scratch problem, but I am just kind of hesitating because I am just not sure if the color will match to black that well.

That is beautiful. Sometimes I wish that I understood how group buys work. They always seem impossibly convoluted and impenetrable.
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

This was actually my first group buy!  It was pretty straightforward for the most part.  Apparently, it's normal for people to buy-in to a group buy and then wait an insanely long time after placing an order, but this one was fulfilled in like 3 months or so - which was awesome.  So now I'm probably spoiled for future group buys and I'll be pissed when I don't have the product within 3 months, haha.

Did you do any polishing for your weights to get the scratches out? I'm still waiting for my kit to arrive, but I'm curious what the other brass owners have done.

Didn't do anything to mine.  I'm alright with the worn-down look, personally.  I mainly upgraded to brass for the extra weight - I can always polish the brass at a later time if it starts to bother me at all.

Still working on polishing the brass, need to buy some more sandpaper this weekend. Despite that, overall I'm pretty happy with the result. I don't even see the brass anyways, and the thing feels like a tank. Using JTK WoB with HKP mods until I can get my hands on GMK red Samurai.

I received the replacement brass bars last night. Top bar is the replacement, bottom is the original. There's still a faint line that you can see, but it looks like this time they bead blasted the piece as all of the machining marks are gone. It's practically perfect!  Thank you Senter for your amazing customer service. I can't wait for the Orange 75% :)

1. Thanks for your optimistic. You gave me a positive comment at the start of your email, which encouraged me a lot.
2. Thank for your forgiving. You mentioned the effort you made for fixing the messes we fxxked up. Sometimes we do make mistakes, while we'll try our best to solve them, I really appreciate you were being flexible and would like to cooperate.
3. Thanks for your grateful. We spent a lot of money on the founder editions' gifts, when we can choose a much cheaper one. Most buyers just take it as a sure thing but you expressed your gratitude.

Unfortunately not everyone one was like you. I'm VERY sensitive to people's comments so that I was under a lot of pressure after the "brass parts drama". At least 3 or 4 people keep bad mousing on me, some are buyers some are even not. Why not ask me for solutions before bad mouthing on the brass parts? Where come the negative comments even you're not a part of this group buy? Some other buyers were just rude and troublesome to communicate. They keep messaging me for questions I explained in the post, asking for additional compensations that I can't provide, sending tons of photos on discord for a scratch around screw hole, sending multiple same emails in one day. I was deeply depressed, especially after accidents in real life at the same time. I wasn't even dare to watch Topclack or search on mechkeys because I was afraid of unpleasant comments. There were several times I really want to quite Fox Lab, or even this community. Keyboards is just a hobby to me, not my business.

I'm very grateful for those who encouraged me when I was down, for those good buyers like you. It was my pleasure to communicate with you for solving all your problems. You were a gentleman and I try my best to solve gentlemen's problems. Oh, keep that in mind, old customers always get discount/gifts if they buy again. I'll SPECIALLY take care of your order if you join again in the future.

BTW, here are some [url=https://imgur.com/a/ktiLr]photos[/url] of the brass parts polished by myself. You can compare them with your parts. Have fun with your board.

Ignore the haters man. **** happens and from what I've read through this thread, you've taken care of any mistakes that were made. While I understand the reason for frustration, people just jump straight to taking their frustrations out on other people, in the worst, because they don't know how to cope with it.

Well said Tanvir, I saw the brass replacement parts. That was really some customer aftersales service. Zeals stab were included in founders edition. That a really sweet gesture. Senter, I still hate myself for missing your first GB. Your post reminded me too. Thanks again for the gift. It really brighten my day.

I dont really care if we get the same thing or something in these lines, but damn, makes you feel REALLY bad not being on this GB.

Yo senter,is there any chance you might do something like this in the near future?

I am still waiting for replacement parts and have no idea when or if  to expect them or how to get them. I have sent Z frontier probably a dozen emails about it and they say they have not been able to get responses from you. Maybe people would badmouth you less if you communicated better and more frequently.

That being said, I do plan to run a group buy for Time 80% in the near future. The concept is the same but all the details have been improved. It will be a totally different Time. I'll IC it and collect feedbacks soon.
