Bars or Scoops?
« on: Mon, 19 September 2016, 06:58:15 »
Now I've been lurking here for quite sometime and just started posting a lot more frequently and am curious as to what the consensus is here:

Are you guys a lover of homing keys being bars or scoops or nipples? Or does it even matter?

I personally love scoops. They give a much more uniform look to the keycap set, they feel great, and are much more noticeable for me due to my typing style. One down fall I will note is that in profiles like DSA or SA where bars aren't available, I find there to be an inconsistency in the lettering that tends to bug me. (But they feel like butt to type on anyways) :))

What do you guys think?

Personally I prefer bars over scoops, no particular reason it's just what I have.

So it's more of, the keyset I like has blank so I'm going to use blank. Or have you had prolonged experience with both?

I currently have bars, not liking them much, they're too near the bottom of the key, and it takes effort sometimes to find them. A homing dot is much easier to notice (that's what I have at work). Have not tried the homing dish yet, not really interested in it, either: the homing dot is good enough for me.

And the homing dot is sometimes called a nipple. That's another good reason to love it.

Thanks! Didn't really go sifting through any older posts before posting. At least I have a reason if there isn't that much discussion goes on here. :p

I always forget about the nipple because I find it much more uncommon in newer boards. The only board I have used with nipples was an AEK and IIRC they were on "D" and "K". My god that was a weird experience for me. I need to hunt down an MX set with nipples to get a better opinion on them.

Also, I can't argue with that. Nipples are now front runners because of the name.

I prefer scoops in GMK sets; but I hate the small ones of DSA, do I have reasons for that?; well, the look, they fit very naturally with the set, feeling, your finger tips accommodate very well on them; finally, they are exclusive for GMK key cap sets, bars are just so common, even the cheapo rubber dome keyboard has bars.

See how smoothly the scoops blend with the other key caps:

Bars, tried nipples shortly and didn't like them.
I don't think i would like scoops, I rely too much on the homing feature and they don't seem different enough.

Bars...

Given how OCD people here are about their typing experience I'm surprised people like scoops which actually feel significantly different as a key and when you press it vs. bars or nipples....and yet don't seem easier to find than bars (not to me anyways).

But they do look nice...

I think there is a bit of exclusivity around Scoops and maybe that plays a part in it...

IMO, bars should be offered on GMK sets just as much as any other of the options..some people disagree but realistically we offer things like 1800 support, 75% support, etc, etc so offering a mod set of bars in a GMK GB only makes sense..or as an included extra..it only makes sense...

Seen it in a few of them which has been great..and only after people expressed an opinion about it...

Scoops have a nice feel, bars and scoops combined are intriguing. Deep dish sphericals are delightful. Dots are some of my favorites for Alps caps. I don't really dislike bars, but I don't really care for them either.

Several Alps caps I use have no homing keys at all and I have no problem with that.

Dots and scoops are my fave though.

--

Seriously tho, before I saw this post, I was thinking of adding some sort of homing indicator to the 2.25u Enter, I like the US layout, yet I hate pressing '" instead of Enter and posting stuff that I wasn't ready to post, my only remaining keyboard/layout issue - adding an indicator to one of those keycaps seems like an easy fix

I remember those ancient times, when we were silenced by a majority of infidel scoops users. Those were dark times, but then some voices started to rise, and even more after that, and a legion after those, finally finding what was making their keyboards slow and unusable, and recognising themselves the need to have bars, and to bar scoops from taking possession, once again, of their beloved keyboards.

Scoops may be remotely acceptable if you keep your hands in the same position all the time, but if you use many shortcuts, or your play games, or you use autocad, you'll see that bars are a necessity. Just by hovering, light like a breeze, on your keys, you'll understand where you are.

Just picked up my first GMK set and it was also my first experience with scoops.  You're right about blending in.  In fact, when I was putting them on I was like, "oh crap, there's no way to feel the F and J keys."  And then I put my hands on the home row... OOOOOOhhhhhh, AAAAAAhhhh.  Scoops are nice!  I also think they are easier to locate quickly, since the scoop effects the entire cap, unlike the bar that is just at the bottom.

Does this mean that polls are fixed?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I had the same experience the first time I used an OG Cherry set, it was a revelation, after years feeling the oddity of a bump under the sensitive finger tips the scoops where like a fresh air for the typing.

I think Gateron keycaps comes in Cherry profile (reasonable similar to actual Cherry/GMK although not 100% the same) and their homing keys are both scooped and barred, it's kinda strange, but might work for you.
