Butterfly spit keyboard
« on: Tue, 24 March 2020, 08:45:43 »
(last udpate: renamed it to Butterfly, updated with pics)

It took me months to design, experiment, improve and finally here it is: Kailh choc clicky switches. CNC Carbon fiber plate. 3D print case.

I'm typing this post using this keyboard right now and I really enjoy it :)

For folks who want to give this keyboard a try:

  • CAD design: here is the CAD design for plate and case: https://github.com/songcq/mammoth. It's using SolidPython, a python lib for Open SCAD. If you want the pdfs, dxfs, stls etc please let me know.
  • Cable: I use a 9-wires cable I bought on Taobao. I bought a bunch of different types and chose one I like the most. It looks good and works really well.
  • Keymap: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/beaf2658afac886c4e6fae0fb5db6dd5. I use "sZ" to mean Shift-when -pressed-Z-when-tapped, similarly "wBS" is windows/backspace, "cSPC" is contrl/space etc.
  • 38 keys only? Yeah I found it's plenty of keys already. With two mod keys easily reachable at thumb, I would think even one more key is too much.
  • Thumb keys. I used similar layout for them as keyboardio model 01. Many people have reported that they can reach every thumb key easily. I concur that.
  • MCU at center. It's awesome two reasons, simple and thin. The only thing you need is a thick cable. No headphone jack, no double MUC etc. Also it keeps the keyboard thin. The interior of my case is only 4mm in height.

I usually hate minimalism but this looks great and is surely more practical than a rectangular 40% board - good work :thumb:
