Sorry man, I'm running out of ideas. I'm sure it's the current source, but my knowledge of analog electronics is fairly limited. :( Have to pass the buck to the EE's reading this.

If all your LEDs are failed then it's likely the current source (transistor) on the PCB like grendel said. If your LEDs are spotty (some brighter some dimmer, pairs of 2 both not working at all) then it's what I would expect from a keyboard running 2 LEDs in series with 1 resistor.

How do I find it and how do I test it??
In the schematic the BL supply is tied into U1, and powered by the transistors Q3Q4 and Q5. try to turn the backlight on and see if you can get voltage out of the BL supply pins (q3 and 4 shared pin) make sure there's voltage coming off of pins 31 and 32 of the main controller (u5 i think).
