GB Date: December 1st, 2019



About

GMK Rudy is inspired by the classic American football film, Rudy. Based on a real life story, the movie captures Rudy Ruettiger’s journey to play football for the University of Notre Dame. To escape his impoverished life as a steel mill worker with poor grades, he works with a tutor to eventually gain admission to his dream school. Once there, he earns himself a spot on the university’s legendary team where he wears jersey #45 (pictured below).

This movie means a lot to us as it is a story about overcoming hardship purely through hard work and perseverance. Warren is actually a college football player at a small Division III school in Southern California. It is the love for this movie and for the sport of American football that really gave us the inspiration to design this set. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do. And we urge you to watch the movie if you haven’t!

One thing we want to guarantee is our hard work and open communication. We will look to routinely update and check in on all threads. The potential success of this set is determined by your interest and passion for it. We hope that our love for it shines through.



Design

The colors of this set are wholly inspired by the school colors of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The set uses two RAL colors and one stock GMK color, for the purpose of accurate GMK color matching.




Kits



Base Kit

We didn't want to make any compromises so we're offering numpad, accent arrow keys, and ISO compatibility in our base kit!



Dark Horse Kit (Navy Alphas)

This kit, inspired by Rudy's drive, will create a uniform navy keyset. The kit is named the Dark Horse kit as Rudy was an underdog throughout his entire life and athletic career.



Spacebars

We kept the spacebar kit basic, included are 1.25u, 1.75u, 2u, 2.25u, 2.75u, 6u (centered), 6.25u and 7u bars.

Change Log

6.13.19 - Updated Kit Renders. We changed the mods to icon+text. We also got a new helmet design that is more representative of Rudy's, changed the Enter novelty to prevent any infringement of intellectual property, and added "Sack!" R4 1u novelties.

6.14.19 - Updated Base Kit Render. We changed back to icon mods. We were trying to tailor the set to match the novelties, and think it should be the other way around. Walker and I agreed the set looks cleaner with just icon mods.

6.22.19 - Finalized all kits and uploaded updated kit renders and board renders. The helmet design has been given the green light for GMK. We have a few more board renders planned for the future so stay tuned.

7.21.19 - Uploaded renders of RAMA caps.

7.24.19 - Announced collaboration with SummitCables to bring you GMK Rudy themed cables.

8.11.19 - Announced addition of the Dark Horse Kit and removal of Novelties kit; 910 RE render added. Novelties kit was removed due to lack of interested and demand from community.

9.27.19 - Deskmat design announcement and renders posted!

11.12.19 - Announced GB Date (12.1.19), collaborations with Latrialum and Alpha Keycaps, and Rudy themed Iron165 giveaway @ 500 base kits.

11.19.19 - Added extra tab key to Base kit and 1.25u spacebar to Spacebars kit. All renders have been updated to show this.

The more I look at this, the more I think it should be Icon + Text mods. The novelties are so large and take up so much surface area, that they look really unbalanced with the icon mods that have large areas of negative space. And I say this as a person that doesn’t really like text + icon.

We also really liked the Irish enter key. However it's the intellectual property of the University of Notre Dame. We hear colleges enforce pretty harshly so we did not want to take any chances and step on any toes.

I'm not trying to be a negative nancy, but I agree that moving away from the icon mods is a bad move. They look so clean with these colors, and the renders as they are look really nice.

I honestly agree with dixie in that the text + icon mods would look better with the novelties, but I'll offer my counter argument. How many people actually buy novelties? Of those, how many actually use them on their boards regularly? And I'm not trying to knock the theme at all, but IMHO, in this community, football probably won't be a huge selling point of this set. I love people having good themes, don't get me wrong. I just think the main selling point of this set would be those super clean colors, and I believe the icon mods match the overall look best. The set is just stunning in that embodiment. I guess to boil it down (I tend to ramble) I'm asking you to reconsider the change because I don't think changing the overall look of the set to better match the novelties is a good call. In my view, if you see an issue with the synergy between the novelties and the base set, the novelties should be adjusted to match the set, not the other way around.

Maybe at the least consider a separate icon mod kit or something based on interest? A poll maybe?

So after some reconsideration, Warren and I did decide that the icon mods were much cleaner, and what we both wanted to see in the set, so we've decided to stick with icon only mods. I thought about exactly what you mentioned - about catering the base kit to suit the novelties when in reality our main selling point is in fact the color scheme. We do very much appreciate all feedback, and your support for this set. Thanks!!

Killer set, absolutely in as of now
My thoughts and suggestions:
- Include the accent spacebars in the base kit. In my eyes they are essential to the look of the set
- Make a seperate numpad kit to keep the base price down
- EU-Kit. 1u novelty with a real football would be a fun touch but whatever.
- Icon Mods look best

I gotta give you props for doing an actual, well laid out IC and reacting to input instead of running an unflexible "sale-announcement" that some ICs are.
That being said, you guys seem to react to feedback a little eagerly. You made the somewhat big decision of changing the mod type after what appeared to be a singular comment and
then change it back to icon a day later after some more input. I suggest taking some time with these changes, let people put out ideas and arguments and then make unrushed decisions considering them, no need to hurry.

I’d also be interested in a separate kit for icon + text mods. I’m still  definitely in even with just icon mods if meeting MOQ is a concern though.

Just a quick update for all those interested - we are doing a collab with Alpha Keycaps to get a Rudy themed Keypora done! RAMA caps are being tweaked, should have up to date renders up sometime this week. More artisan collabs to come.

Here are a few suggestions pertaining to the base kit from the Discord discussion we had the other day:
  • ÷ and × instead of / and * on the numpad
  • Super instead of Code for the OS keys
  • Although I think Sys (1.25u) and System (1.5u) would be even cooler

This might just be me, but most of the pics in the OP, as well as the signature banners, aren't loading since the update. This may or may not be due to them being Discord CDN links. Hosting the images on Imgur or a similar service should solve the issue.

We've replaced it with our new Dark Horse Kit, a navy alphas kit. The lack of interest is completely understandable as the crossover between mechanical keyboards and American football isn't great. We hope that you all will enjoy the Dark Horse Kit. Please continue to give us your thoughts and feedback as we are constantly trying to improve GMK Rudy!

I don't care much for American football (heck, I don't even care for regular football), but I really liked the shamrock novelties. Would it at least be possible to keep some of those, e.g. in the base kit as alternatives for the Super keys?

These kit changes are awesome. I'm pretty new so I don't know what's the norm, but would it be possible to get an extra "tab" key for the dark horse kit. I'm not sure if you're supposed to, but that would enable us to have basically two sets if you get the dark horse kit, one full navy and another with the normal colourway, they'd have to be slightly different layouts like a 60% WKL navy and a 65% regular. The only key needed would be tab.

The fix is pretty simple: replace the R3 #~ key with an R3 \| key. With that, you'll have full support for US ISO without altering the total number of keycaps.

Really appreciate the dark horse kit addition. It makes a big deal forward and peaks my interest.

I do, however, recommend you split out numpad from base kit. Many people in the community do not need/want it, and forcing people to pay more for the things they don't need/want is just not appreciated.

Any chance of a 1.5 super key or two for MacOS focused 7u spacebar bottom rows? I was hoping to put this on a Rama U80-A and put one of the 1.5u shamrock novelties to the left of spacebar to use as a win/command key, but without the novelties, the kit doesn't fit that use case.

I don't care much for American football (heck, I don't even care for regular football), but I really liked the shamrock novelties. Would it at least be possible to keep some of those, e.g. in the base kit as alternatives for the Super keys?

We are in the talks about possibly implementing the shamrock/clover novelties into the base kit.

What's the material for the gold rama cap? Looks like brass in the render? Either way, so excited for this set. It's going to go perfectly with the blue and gold Rama U80-A.

I agree with depleted vespene, if you're changing up everything else, It would be cool to switch up ISO! Iso users will always be torn. Depending on who you ask you'll get a different answer, but whoever told you to offer one third of an ISO layout ONLY, is not someone I can agree with.

My suggestion would be to offer full ISO US, as seen in my basekits, as it's the best way to offer a complete ISO layout in 4 keys, not to mention it's the most visually pleasing combination (subjective). Please don't do double pipeslash, as someone else suggested.

Happy to see the uniform alphas, looks sick!

I appreciate your feedback. I was very specific in my response to depletedvespene. I said the ISO keys in our base will not be changing "as of now". That means that, as of now, we are satisfied with our base kit and its compatibility. This does not mean that the door for changes is shut.

Okay, this convinces me I need to write the "field guide" I've been thinking about, to explain in detail what ISO support is, what is it not, and why "Atlantis ISO" is wrong (given that actual people who prefer ISO choose to go with it and don't actually know better).

I'll send you a PM to explain this further, to avoid mudding this particular thread.

I'm sorry, but the only novelty we're considering bringing back is the shamrock/clover. And if we do, it'd be in the base kit.

Please keep the shamrock novelties (preferably 1.5u as well as 1.25u). They give the set so much more character than just being navy, actually tying it to its namesake. Plus, they improve the set's bottom row versatility, and without them, the Rama cap matches the basekit only in color. The shamrock Rama cap made more sense when it matched the shamrock novelties. For whatever it's worth, I would absolutely pay more for the shamrocks to be included in the base kit. I'm a sucker for navy (my favorite color), so I'll be joining the GB either way. I would definitely prefer it with the shamrocks though.

Also, great work! This is going to be a beautiful set!

Was looking over the kits for min. ortho support and noticed that your spacebar kit needs a 1.25u key. That's quite common in split builds.


As for min. ortho support, you'd only need to add 4, 1u keys for basic support:

R2: Out
R3: Data or Read
R4: Shift, Enter

That's it. You can grab a 2u spacebar from the spacebar kit and all other r4 1u keys are in the base. The r1 and r2 molds exist thanks to Carbon and Pulse.

Was looking over the kits for min. ortho support and noticed that your spacebar kit needs a 1.25u key. That's quite common in split builds.


As for min. ortho support, you'd only need to add 4, 1u keys for basic support:

R1: Out
R2: Data or Read
R3: Shift, Enter

That's it. You can grab a 2u spacebar from the spacebar kit and all other r4 1u keys are in the base. The r1 and r2 molds exist thanks to Carbon and Pulse.

Going off what Nasp said about Ortho compatibility. If you make those 4 keys the shamrock keys you kill two birds with one stone. Maybe the r1 key

Hey all!

There are some small changes:
1. An extra tab key has been added to the base kit to help provide 2 Rudy sets for 2 different boards of specific layouts.
2. A 1.25u space key has been added to the Spacebars kit!

All final renders have been uploaded. This includes the updated renders for the Fjell, Satisfaction 75, and RAMA U-80 to convey the removal of the Novelties kit.

The final renders hae been submitted to GMK for final price quotations!

Can I offer that maybe the rest of the group buy doesn't need to subsidize your specific layout preference?

I say this as both a 40s and ortho user myself.

There are dozens of potential configurations for the modifier keys in these non-standard layouts. In fact I rarely see people using those keys to mean with the legends say they mean.  So what you are asking for is a very specific aesthetic preference to be met, which will appeal to only a subset of individuals within an already niche sub community.

I see this over and over in keyset interest checks and I'm sick of it. This kind of bellyaching (often from people who aren't likely to buy GMK anyway) leads to $55 40% kits that don't make MOQ. Meanwhile there are people out there who basically can't use GMK on their staggered 40% keyboards at all because they couldn't buy the kit containing the one or two keys they needed, because its size and price were bloated by a local minority asking for every possible legend/row/color combination.

There was a time not long ago that people except it when you use something non-standard you will have to make aesthetic sacrifices. Recall that even things like HHKB backspace/pipe/fn weren't always a given. But at least that's 3 unambiguous keys, not some arbitrarily large number.

In my opinion if you are going to add anything to the kit it's baseline 40% row support, which consists of 1-3 keys and makes previously impossible layouts possible. Grow it to 5 keys and you can support the Boardwalk layout (and related split ergos) as well. That's much more important IMO than ensuring pretty legends.

The keys I proposed earlier would have been 4, 1u keys - two of which are legend agnostic. These 4, 1u keys add $2 to the base kit and yes I have evidence to back this up. That $2 would likely be absorbed by the vendor since a price of $137 or $142 is not the standard way to price things.

The Boardwalk would need 8 total keys added, not a measly 5 BTW. 2 1.5u of each row. Those 8, 1.5u keys would be much more than the $2 ortho support would add to the base.

I'm one of the partner vendors who run's summitcables.

We will have 2 colorways and 2 sizes available.

Maybe it's just me - but all but one picture on OP is not working.

I've heard several people have this issue. It's usually due to the browser you're using. Could you try viewing it another browser perhaps?

Warren, what's your reasoning for not offering split bars with Dark Horse alphas? GMK Coral's kit had split bars, extra Tab mod, AND UK ISO support in it's Coral Relief kit for only 10 more dollars.

It sucks and I’m sorry about that.

I don't agree with that assessment, especially price. Coral's alpha kit had a lot more keys, which was my point with it's $10 price above Rudy's. Since you'd probably only be adding 3 bars to the kit, 1.25u, 2.25u, and 2.75u, I doubt the price would jump up $10.

Split bars are becoming increasingly popular and 40s folks could have purchased an alpha kit since all they would need is modifiers (CR 40s mod kit is running soon).

IMO it's much better to make your kit accessible to as many boards as possible, especially if that only comes at the cost of 3 physical keys. Those 3 keys would probably only raise the cost of the kit by $5. Folks who are already buying base plus an extra alphas kit probably don't care about $5 if it means extra compatibility with a layout they might use in the future.

why not add the blue split spacebars to the spacebar kit. its priced at 22$.
I paid 30$ for the metropolis spacebar set.
