[IC] - JellyKey - SA - Starry Night Keyset
« on: Sat, 16 April 2016, 08:00:56 »
Dear friends,

I would like to present you our latest creation after 2 weeks of non-stop developing and designing.

Keyset Name: Starry Night
Profile: SA
Row: 1-1-2-3-4-4

The first keyset by Joinhandmade team was named Starry Night after the name of an oil painting by Van Gogh as the team was inspired by the color of that masterpiece. That inspiration has continued to nourish the team’s creativity that led to the work of keyset.

With the keyset, the dominantly-triangle-shaped icons of the keyset are another unique feature. In the world of high tech or design, the triangle shape evokes strength, movement and the future. Each specific icon was designed with a specific meaning: Creation, Connection, Exploration, Expression, Learning, Understanding, Protection, Reflection, Challenge, Transcendent, Combination, Transformation, Transition, and Transfusion.

I don't think SP can do triple-shot keycaps. A couple of those symbol keys will be impossible for them to make.

Base Kit - The extra CTRL is 2.25 instead of 1.75. I don't know of a single board or person that puts CTRL where L SHIFT is, if that was intentional. It is also yellow, and not the dark blue that the CAPS LOCK is. Speaking of caps lock, the render has "CAPSLOCK" instead of "CAPS LOCK" on the main key, and the extra bottom one caps key is also yellow instead of blue? Makes no sense. Secondly, what is the point of having "Hyper" and "Super" keys? Having one of the keys, in this sets case, is good because you can use it as MENU or FN without the need to have both. Also, why are they yellow also?

Numpad- Not a "mistake" technically, but the straight vertical gradient of the numpad would look quite odd beside the staggered gradient of the alphas and mods. Also, it would only fully "match" the Tenkeyless 02 kit due to the yellow top row, the basic kit has a full blue top row, which could also look very out of place in conjunction with the kit. A full blue kit or a staggered gradient would be a huge improvement i think.

Symbol Kit #1 - The 3 novelty keys on the right with multiple colors are impossible to make. Period. SP simply can't do them. Also, the others would need to be designed and touched up more than likely to be able to be made by SP. Why is the 1.5u BS blue? Why is there a blue AND yellow 1u |\ but only a yellow 1u BS? What is the point of having 1.5u bottom row modifiers and not including a 7u spacebar?

Symbol Kit #2-Like the first symbol kit, the last 3 keys are unable to be produced at all by SP.

ISO KIT- Why is the return key blue? Why are the 2, 3, 4 keys yellow? Makes zero sense.

ISO kit is still wrong.

, and # are the wrong color. They are placed next to the right side of the board - so they need to be light.
Backslash is the wrong color. It lives on the left side of the board - so it needs to be dark.
3 and 4 are not the same shade as your base kit.

Honestly, I would like this set much better if the legends were all yellow, with the base as various shades of dark blue. Instead of a "starry night", you've got a yellow-blue gradient which, while good on 1976, does not work very well here to my eyes. It doesn't match the theme when you have that much yellow on one side of the board.

I usually don't like custom-key cap sets, but I think this is gorgeous and may be the first set I buy that isn't a cheap rosewill or tai hao set. I'm definitely interested, assuming the price isn't outrageously higher than most group-buy prices.

I don't think there is any reason to include a steeped caps lock with the base kit. No standard keyboard uses a steeped caps key there. The steeped caps lock is most common on vintage cherry boards and custom builds, many of which use Winkeyless layouts. Generally that key is just put in the winkeyless kits.

Unless Jelly Key built their own SA profile cap molds, it's SP as they do note that it's SA profile.

Because we haven't been waiting to be able to buy any actual product from jellykey  :))

I still don't get why this is SA as opposed to DSA. SA looks great with retro style stuff, but this isn't retro. Maybe I just need to see an actual render to judge.

SA is popular right now so people are running with it.  That said, Hana is DSA and doing well on MD, Earfbound is also planned for DSA at the moment.

Jelly key arranged 1 gb in VN before. I tried most of their artisan keycaps, can't beat the look though.

Lol, all the good stuff are in the secret place here. They are awesome I would say. They are going to arrange GB for a Crimson Night by the end of this week. Don't know if they have a plan to make it outside of VN, but the last GB for Vnese only was quite success I would say.

That's the thing, I don't know how big the mech community in VN is, but for me, 1 local gb isn't as reassuring as one that those of us in the US or Europe would be able to partake in.

It was quite big though, but it is quite isolated after the Event.
I lived in Denmark before, though pretty sure it is bigger than Scandinavia community.
The previous GB almost hit 100 units, which is not bad for a single community and first project. I didn't follow because of ugly base colour.
Pretty sure next GB would be a blast, chances are they will open it for foreigner customers with shipping fee as well. Regardless, I will stock some and resell them for GH only.
BTW I have a brother living in Ohio if you want I could make a special order lol.
Sorry for long post. I am new to forum and still dont know how to edit those quotes out.

Jelly key arranged 1 gb in VN before. I tried most of their artisan keycaps, can't beat the look though.

That's the thing, I don't know how big the mech community in VN is, but for me, 1 local gb isn't as reassuring as one that those of us in the US or Europe would be able to partake in.
It was quite big though, but it is quite isolated after the Event.

SP's gonna need another SA machine!  Oh wait, they've needed that for a couple of years now...

Nice looking set.  Ever since I saw that picture of the guy in the hat, I knew I liked VNMK.

In an email Oobly posted a while back, SP had mentioned that they had increase SA tooling.  The demand just means they might need to look to increase even more.

I understand their end though.  The SA profile is hot right now but how long will it last?  New molds aren't cheap and I'm sure they want to ensure they're going to be able to capitalize on those molds.

I think they're afraid of over-expanding their operations. If this SA trend dies down then they'll be stuck with some very, very expensive equipment that isn't being fully utilized.

I was hoping they would produce their own keycaps instead of relying on SP.  Producing in VN would be cheaper, and that triple shots caps suggested that they wouldn't be using SP.

Absolutely.  That's a fair amount of money to lay out on tooling that may not be needed for long.  I certainly can't blame them on not putting more into SA tooling.

did you think to check SP colors first?

After looking at SP's ABS colors again, there is nothing close to resembling the yellow/light green you have on this kit, with the other green being quite iffy at best.

you can but SP still doesn't have the "pastel" colors used in the renders. Realistically using SP ABS colors it would be something like this

The SP mock-up is pretty bad.  The light text on the dark keys is nice by itself, but all of the colors don't work together at all.

Jellykey, did you plan on being able to get these colors?

I'm close to un-watching because it's almost looking like there's no point.

Theres a few different colors you can swap in an out, depending on what you would think is the closest (also, KLE isnt the most accurate for colors as they look IRL mind you) but still, there is really nothing close to multiple colors they used. Very worrisome.

I want this keyset so bad!  I'm skeptical about the colors being actually available, but I'm definitely interested.  More keyset makers need to make the base kit a 60% like this.  TKL base kits as the only option suck.  30% of the market is 60% users and the most popular keyboard is the Poker line so why force a TKL base kit?

My point doesn't fall "utterly flat".  Firstly, you're using outdated survey data.  Here is the most recent 2016 Winter Survey.  30% goes to 60% keyboards (up 0.5%) while 32% goes to TKL (down 2.6%).  Despite the fact that TKL holds a larger share of the market, its popularity is dropping and 60% is increasing.  Pok3r still holds top spot for favorite keyboard and that's ignoring the fact that Poker X and Poker II are still very prevalent.  Finally, regardless that TKL is slightly more popular than 60% (and falling), offering a base kit in 60% has no effect on the price of TKL keysets but DOES lower the price for 60% users as they are getting less keys.

I have no problems with most keysets starting off as a 60% base, as long as the price reflects that and as long as someone can get the base kit + TKL kit for roughly the same price as what TKL base kits run now.

Yeah, of course.  That's what I want too.  I just want an option for a 60% base.  Group buys are starting to offer 40%/Planck base kits for the few people that use them. 60% should be offered as well is all I'm saying.

Example: the Hana DSA GB base kit (TKL) came with 25 unusable or unwanted keys. 91 keys in the base, 60 fit the 60% and another 6 were alternate color/size keys. So if this would have been a 60% set with 66 keys, you're looking at 27.5% less keys.  I know it probably doesn't correlate to 27% reduction in price, but let's say it does for a best case scenario. The base kit drop shipped at $52 so reduce the price by 72.5%: $52* 0.725 = $37.70.  May be just wishful thinking, but will all these awesome sets coming out, I'd rather pay for exactly what I need.  That $14 saved could help some get the next set (maybe the Chocolatier!) or step up an get the novelties.

Seriously why are F-Keys included in the base?  Even 75% keyboards have arrows so what board would the base kit even fit?

Agreed.  If the base kit is going to be 60%, don't include F keys.  Put F keys in a TKL set along with arrows and the nav cluster.

Why have F keys in a base kit, but not fill out the rest of the TKL? That makes no sense, at all.

Also, not a whole lot of point having a steeped caps is you aren't catering to the rest of the keys a winkeyless keyboard needs.

Why have all the double forum novelties?

Take some time to actually look at the keyboards and figure out why many kits you see actually have the certain keys in them, and why certain keys commonly grouped together.

I don't think they can go back to update two, unless they manage to convince SP it's worth the hustle to do custom ABS colors (which probably won't happen any time soon). The problem is that they just picked colors that looked nice without researching whether SP was actually able to produce anything resembling it. But I think a proper redesign would have to start from scratch, rather than trying to bridge the gap between the original concept and SP's color palette.

Nah, I think a lot of thought went into the aesthetics – the initial concept looks really neat. The logistics of actually producing the caps, that's another story. But having lots of experience of and talent for the former does not automatically mean you know all the ins and outs of dealing with SP and what they can or cannot do.

Man, that's quite a departure from the original concept.  I don't know about that yellow, kind of makes this Modern Selectric with some extra splashes of color.

It's correct. SP has very limited color options. So, we have to change the set with their available color.
Our designer is learning Solidworks, she will finish the 3D Render very soon.

That's great, but I think you are going about it the wrong way. The initial concept was based around a gradient from dark blue to green, whereas the new concept contains three colors: blue, green, and yellow. I get that the yellow was the closest match to the rightmost green from the initial concept, but it's still quite a stark departure from what you started with and breaks the gradient that tied the color scheme together.

I'd suggest you start designing from the palette you have to work with, rather than trying to reverse engineer the initial concept using the SP color palette. The first two iterations of the set where really interesting; the current rendition feels kind of meh, at least to me personally (and apparently also to a lot of people here in the thread).

This statement i so wrong. Wrong wrong wrong!
You guys are new right? If you compare SPs color palette to other manufactures, you will see SP has the richest color palette ever (afaik).

However if you want your previous colorway, you should ask SP for custom colors. But be aware custom colors will increase the pricing. AFAIK the TOXIC keyset was the first one with custom color (lime green).

That are my thoughts too.

However these guys should gather more infos about the possibillities. Actually there are enough info around. I highly suggest reading previous GB. Try to figure out, why some things has been done in a particular way. Basically SP provides already enough info on their homepage. But they have also to communicate with SP. 90% of work in a project is communication and info managment.

My suggestion is to stick with original colorway, gather needed information and build up communication with SP.

There are people on GH far more knowledgeable than me when it comes to these things, but wouldn't it be easier to just go for a more conventional key profile and work with a company like GMK to produce a keyset with the colors you actually wanted from the start? Spericals are nice and all, but there are lots of companies that make keycaps and some of them might be more inclined to do custom colors.

My understanding is that GMK is probably the least likely to do custom colors without a massive MOQ.

You are right. It's a long journey for a newcomer like us. Hope that we can deliver one of our keycap to you.

I love this colorway!
The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's surface area (41,285 km²), making it one of the most alpine countries. Despite the fact that Switzerland covers only 14% of the Alps total area (192,753 km²),[2][3] many alpine four-thousanders (48 of 82) are located in the Swiss Alps and practically all of the remaining few are within 20 km of the country's border.

As much as I like the design, I have to ask- how the hell are you going to get the cash to make 16 custom doubleshot legends? Each one of those requires new tooling, which I've heard is expensive...

Am I missing something or flat-out wrong?

EDIT: 18, actually, since the "X" on the numpad and "FUNC" are new legends as well.

It shouldn't be hugely bad.  Carbon had quite a number of unique keys involved and upcoming sets like Rebel and Yuri are looking at almost complete alphabet changes for Aurebesh and Cyrillic respectively.

What font are you guys using for that render? It's not SP's Gorton Modified for sure, that's way chunkier. For example, look at the curly brackets on the Round 5 keys – the line width here seems to be at least twice that of whichever font you're using. Not that light fonts are not nice (though perhaps not the most legible), but I doubt SP would be able to do something with those hair thin lines even if you paid them to make custom moulds for all the keys in the set.

This is one of the most beautiful sets I've ever seen. Definitely interested.

Damn, those renders are HOT.

In fairness, I don't believe SP's Gorton Modified is an actual computer font.  That makes it really difficult to produce renders that exactly match the final SP keycaps.  But there are plenty of fonts that come close.  In my research, it appears that German design house URW Studio purchased the rights to the original Gorton engraver's font (Gorton is a brand of engraving machines) in the 90s and produced their URW Gordon font (notice the subtle name change) from it.  It's a nearly perfect replica of the original.  SP has made some changes to the original Gorton, which is why they call it Gorton Modified.  They explain this briefly on their web site.  There are a few other PC fonts that imitate the Gorton look.

An exact match would indeed be difficult, but Engineering Plot or some other free plotter font would be a fairly good approximation style-wise. Also, nice bit of typeface history. I guess that means URW Gordon would be a good starting point if one wanted to make legends that are not covered by Gorton Modified.

Would have preferred something more muted that would have matched or at least complimented the SA Starry Night Space and the RGB caps I've purchased.

I guess SP don't do glitter, but a darker set with nicely coloured legends would have worked nicely.

Update would be good, just read through the whole thread and it seems to have flatlined rather abruptly...

It "flat lined" because as you probably read, the font they used was not available and neither were the colors. In updated versions they used some of the SP standard colors, but those didn't look very good at all IMO...

SA ergodox would be nice. Row 2 or row 3 novelties would be nice fir the ergodox layout.  I miss the old light green but it's still a lovely set.
