Post by: jdcarpe on Thu, 18 February 2016, 18:20:16
JD45 Mechanical Keyboard

Introducing the JD45 keyboard from Carpe Keyboards, a 40% form factor mini keyboard which combines an ultra compact size with standard key stagger and full programmability. Designed by J.D. Carpenter (aka jdcarpe), and manufactured by TEX Electronics Co. in Taiwan.

> > > ORDERING CLOSED < < <
Prices start at $179.99, plus shipping.

Orders will be taken until 23:59 UTC on 2016-03-19. Any unpaid orders at that time will be canceled.

Note: You have the choice of purchasing a fully assembled JD45 keyboard, which will include soldered switches with keycaps, or purchasing a DIY kit with the parts you will need to build the keyboard yourself. You also have your choice of case colors, switch types (assembled only), and switch plates (DIY only).

Anodized Aluminum Case Housing

The foundation of the JD45 keyboard is a case housing milled from a solid piece of aircraft-grade aluminum. Each case is milled using a CNC process for outstanding precision. Material is 6061 aluminum alloy, which gives the small keyboard a satisfying heft, and a solid, premium typing experience. Finally, the case is anodized in either silver or black color, for that ultimate finished look. Optionally, there is available a version of the case with blocked corners, which emulates the aesthetic of the wildly popular Happy Hacking Keyboard. Available in black or silver colors.

JD45 PCB

The PCB is the heart of any keyboard. Designed by Wilba, the JD45 PCB features white silkscreen printing on a red solder mask, and comes pre-programmed with a standard layout. It is, however, also fully programmable! With an ATmega32U4 controller on-board, it is compatible with hasu's TMK firmware, metalliqaz's Easy AVR, or other compatible AVR-based firmwares. The PCB is compatible with both MX and ALPS switches, and all components of the assembled keyboard are installed at the factory. DIY PCBs have component electronics pre-soldered, to include diodes and resistors, so the PCB is ready for installation of key switches and optional LEDs.

Switch Plates

Included with every assembled keyboard and DIY kit, the switch plate is essential for stable mounting of the MX or Alps switches. Assembled keyboards will include a color matched anodized aluminum switch plate with standard layout only, which support MX switches. DIY kits will include your choice of switch plate, whether fixed-layout Alps mount, or universal MX mount, in either standard or blocked corner (MX only) versions.

Switches & Keycaps

With the assembled keyboard, you have your choice of MX switches, as well the inclusion of keycaps. Available switch types include genuine Cherry MX blue, brown, black, or red switches. Cherry mechanical key switches are manufactured by ZF Electronics, and have a proven record of reliability, rated to 50 million key presses. Included keycaps are uniform OEM profile, ABS keycaps with printed legends.

FAQ

Q: When does the buy close?

A: 23:59 UTC on 2016-03-19

Q: Can I buy a [plate/PCB/case] separately?

A: Unfortunately, I am unable to sell kit components, such as the case, plate, or PCB, separately. These are packaged as keyboards and kits by the manufacturer, and I will be shipping them all personally from my home, without repackaging the items. Logistically, it is unreasonable for me to offer individual components for sale, as I would never realistically be able to fulfill orders within a sensible time frame.

Q: Are keycaps included with the DIY kit? Are there different color options for the keycaps?

A: Also, the decision was made early on not to offer keycaps with the DIY kits, as it would raise the cost of the kit beyond what I personally would want to pay. I assume that with a DIY kit, people will want to bring their own switches and keycaps. Only black keycaps with white legends are available, and only with the assembled keyboard package.

Q: Is the plate necessary?

A: For MX switches, no, the plate is completely optional when using PCB-mount switches. If you were to purchase an assembled kit, and later remove the plate in order to change the layout, that is perfectly fine. Alps switches, of course, require a plate.

Q: Can I mix Alps and MX switches with the DIY kit?

A: Yes! In fact, the MX universal layout plate will accept Alps switches, due to the design of the switch holes. It's a hidden feature.

Q: Does this keyboard have LED backlighting? RGB? Underglow?

A: The PCB does support LED backlighting, but LEDs are not included in any version, assembled or DIY. In fact, resistors are pre-soldered to the PCB for all versions. RGB LEDs are not supported, nor does the PCB have support for LED underglow. LEDs for backlighting are addressed as a group, not individually.

Q: In addition to purchasing one or more JD45 keyboards, how can I help support this group buy here on Geekhack?

A: Just add this code to your signature in your forum profile:

Beautiful.

Now to decide on full case with Alps or blocked case with MX.

Also, is this an ongoing product or is there an end date for the GB?

Thanks, JD & getting ready to place my order now.....

Alright, my order's been placed! I went with the silver rectangular case and the assembled option with cherry MX blue switches! I'm definitely looking forward to this keyboard. BTW, if I'm to change my mind & want the blocked corners case instead, can I do that? Again, thanks, JD & looking forward to receiving my JD45!
Next up, a 60%, debating on a Pok3r or a fully programmable KC. After that just switches &/or LEDs.

Well, it's about half the cost of a typical custom, so you could always get both, right?

Really, wanted to get the blocked case, but the only linears I like are MX Black, and I have a board of those. I think I'll just go with the standard case so I can get Alps linears.

I wish! Already paid for my order btw heh.

Anyways, I'm a noob. This will be my first custom keyboard. I know in the description it says Cherry MX, but are Zealios compatible as well? Again, please excuse me. I don't know much about switches besides MX and Topre lol.

Which Zealios feels more like MX Clears? 67g or 78g?

MX Clears have a much higher bottom-out than those two, so 78g would be closest, but still a bit softer.

This may have been addressed, but does the package automatically come with the caps? If so, I'm assuming they're MX only?
And will the cases be angled somehow, whether by the case itself or with feet?

Thanks, jd!

I've never had that problem, but maybe I'm just lucky. I know some people have experienced it.

The assembled package does indeed come with keycaps included. And yes, they are only MX-mount.

The case doesn't come with large feet for angling the board, but I plan to use some stick on type feet to raise the back at an angle.

Yes, it has small rubber feet included, but the design is basically the same as the TEX 60% case.

Yes, of course it is possible, but I had to limit the number of plate designs being sent to manufacture. :)

@jdcarpe any possibility of buying just a case and adding to an order instead of another set of the complete item. I have already placed my initial order.

I also second the ability to add the black keycaps in the photo for DIY kits.. Pretty please.

I wonder if it would be possible just to cut the outer keys from the alps plate to make it fit the blocked case. But of course you would loose the functionality that would be associated with those, since it does not have the variability on the bottom row like the mx plate.

Blues - 55g Clicky
Browns - 45g Tactile
Clears - 35g Linear
Greens - 80g Clicky
Reds - 45g Linear
Yellows - 50g Linear

Is the Hack'd by Geeks keyset Cherry MX -only or will there be an Alps option? Alps would be grand...

Does the DIY option include keycaps?
No, it is supposed to be a 'barebones' type kit. I assume people will want to bring their own switches and keycaps.

I am thinking about offering a keycap group buy after the keyboard group buy ends.

Is the Hack'd by Geeks keyset Cherry MX -only or will there be an Alps option? Alps would be grand...

Would this be reasonable for a first DIY build? Are there detailed instructions somewhere?

So it's $180 for a pcb, alu case and a top plate?

It is MX only. AFAIK, SP doesn't currently offer SA profile with Alps mounts.

Yes, that is correct. Alu cases typically cost $100 per unit in volume, and $40 each for CNC milled anodized alu plate and fully assembled PCB seem reasonable, right? FYI, I paid $350 for my one-off prototype black alu case with blockers to be made, before I partnered with TEX.

Sure, check out this post for all layout options:

You can use either a 6.00u or 6.25u spacebar, if you choose.

Can I program the JD45 on my mac?

Does the DIY JD-45 come with keycaps? It is not super clear to me if it does.

Also, does the JD45 have the same size layout as a standard keyboard? I mean, I know there are less keys, but are the sizes and space the same? I don't want to lose my muscle memory.

Thank you.

Yes, I believe you can program the layout by compiling the TMK firmware on your Mac. Then flash the hex file to the keyboard using avrdude. I'm not exactly sure of the process, as I've never used a Mac to reprogram an ATmega.

The DIY kit does not come with keycaps. It is assumed that people will want to bring their own switches and keycaps.

The main portion of the alpha keys are the same as on a standard keyboard, with identical stagger. The only thing different are the modifier sizes.

Thanks for the reply JD. Will probably just use Easy AVR on the raspberry pi to program it before using it on my mac.

By the way, will Tex taiwan be doing the soldering for the assembled units?

And if I get the silver assembled case, will it come with white keycaps? or are all keycaps black?

Also, if I get the assembled units, will the soldered switches be easy to desolder using newbie electronics hobby desoldering skills? Just in case the switches wear out and i want to replace them.

Thanks

Yes, TEX is soldering the assembled units.

All keycaps are black with white legends, even with the silver case.

Desoldering the switches isn't as easy as soldering them in, but it's not that difficult, either. Get a good desoldering pump, such as a genuine Edsyn DS-017.

What are the sizes of the keycaps on the assembled keyboard? Particularly, the non standard keys
Enter =
Spacebar =
Left Shift =
Right Shift =
Left Tab =
Fn =

or whatever other non-standard keys I can't see.

Also, do you have any plans of conducting another JD45 GB either through geekhack or massdrop? Or is this a once in life time thing? Did the JD40 group buy only happen once?
I'm thinking about the rarity and replaceablility/buyability (both opposite ends of the spectrum, both appealing in their own way).
If it's a once in a decade thing, it would definitely give the keyboard appeal.
But if I can get another one in the future brand new outside of buying it from others who have already bought, that also has a practical appeal to it, since typing in different sizes of keyboards takes too much unlearning.

Thank you for any insight.

Key size reference now in 2nd post of this thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79797.msg2062638#msg2062638

As for future plans, well...how should I put this? I guess I can say that it all depends on the success of this initial buy. If this round goes well, there is sure to be another. Or perhaps online keyboard retailers will want to stock the JD45 in their stores? I suppose what I'm saying is, please help make this buy a success by placing an order now, or there may not be opportunities to purchase one in the future. :)

Thanks for your support!

JD, why are you so amazing?

Believe it or not, this is NOT a FAQ. :P

What is the difference between this and JD40? Additional 5 keys?

Yes, you get one additional column, which makes for a big difference in usability. The JD40 is an exercise in smallest keyboard POSSIBLE, while the JD45 is meant to be smallest keyboard PRACTICAL. Also, for users of non-qwerty layouts, such as Dvorak or Colemak, that additional column is not just nice to have, but necessary.

The default layout doesn't match the render.  Are there really two backspaces on the default layer?

Yes, I couldn't decide which location was better, so I included both. I hope to ship assembled boards with an extra blank 1.75u key, if they don't want the Bs legend on there.

It doesn't come with any stabs, actually. Some people won't need them, because they will use something close to the default layout, so I chose not to include them, in order to save from adding to the cost of the kit. You will want Cherry PCB mount stabs, if you choose to add them.

Yes, that's entirely possible. The MX universal plate will support Alps switches also, due to the design of the switch holes. You just have to be a little careful during assembly with the alignment of the Alps switches in the open areas of the plate.

It should work well with either the Nulaxy or Handheld Scientific Bluetooth adapters. :)

Or you can add a BlueSmirf adapter by soldering it to the controller IC expansion pads on the PCB, if you're handy at DIY.

It's the room to add a bt controller and battery in the case that has me worried - is there much clearance underneath the board as it sits in the currently designed case? Is the block case deeper or more open to mods?

Ah, doubtful. The PCB mounts are only about 3.5mm above the bottom of the inside of the case. And there are support rails, as you can see. A different case option would probably be required to install something under the PCB.

Hehe. That photo is awesome, gives better view of the legends on the assembled units.
If your video recorder is not that good, even just photos from different angles just like what you posted could go a long way enticing people.

Regarding marketing, I'm no marketing expert myself except what works on me.
For example,  if you have other keycaps around, letting others see how different keycaps sets look on the keyboard through photos could let them imagine the possibilities. This is actually how I got interested in the JD40, through a rainbow keycapped JD40 I saw on youtube.
So if time permits, and if you own some keycap sets, showing them on the JD45 could catch their attention.
People love photos. The more the better I think.

Thanks again. Good luck!

For sure the Matias switches will work with the DIY Alps kit. Most of the Tai Hao keycaps will work fine, as well. You're going to be short by 4 of the 1.75u caps, though. And you would have profile and legend mismatch for some of the other modifier keys.

I'm working toward a solution for Alps keycap compatibility, but it won't happen before this buy ends.

No pressure of course. Take your time as the GB deadline is still far, though of course, the more the photos and with different keycaps, the merrier, and the more informed your prospective buyers.
Another suggestion would be to add the photos in the front page. You also don't have to post everything all at once if you don't have a lot of time; I mean, you can release the photos of one set on one day, then the photos of another set the next day. This, I think this builds up momentum, and keeps the GB fresh. But of course, if you want to just give all out in one go, that would be awesome. Of course, take whatever I say with a packet of salt. ;D

By the way, out of curiosity. If someone puts this keyboard in Massdrop's polls and it gets popular enough that Massdrop contacts you, are you willing to work with them to turn this into a drop?
I imagine, though I'm not sure, that this will be popular in massdrop, hopefully enough to bring down prices, especially for those who want to buy multiple units.

You can use either, if you will be using the included plate (which is optional btw), but I always recommend pcb mount switches for extra stability. It also helps with alignment in the universal cutouts.

Well it's from a reputable supplier, designed by the world class jdcarpe, the pcb is by wilba with prior work from samwise and Vinny so you know the design is well thought out and vetted, and it is sure to have excellent community support on GH.

Thank you. Hope I can see a couple pics before xxxx keyboard ends so I can cancel in time.

By the way, is there/will there be clear documentation on how to program the keyboard? Like an easy step by step guide?

I know I can use the Easy AVR to produce the Hex file.. But I have no clue how to put the hex file into the keyboard.

And is there an easy/hard way to replace the microcontroller on this just in case it is faulty, since I will have mine possibly shipped somewhere far far away, and returns would just be too costly.

Or will there be a version where the controller is easy replaceable ala HHKB? Modular?

Great looking keyboard by the way. A great improvement over the JD40. I can't wait for JD45 mark 2. or maybe a JD60, with a similar design as the JD45, split spacebar, but with number rows. That would just be perfect!

That just looks beautiful! Probably looks even better on the square corners.  Hope we could see this with the square corners as well, and with similar number of keys as the standard layout of the assembled jd45 (split spacebar, four bottom keys on each side of the split spacebar). ;D

Can't decide between black or silver. Would you by any chance have the final production black case?

I think you might want to cancel that other keyboard now. :)

I can point you to a programming guide. I'll just have to find it, but I know there is at least one here on GH already.

Once you have generated the .hex file of your firmware, you use Atmel's Flip to flash it to the keyboard.  You probably need WinAVR installed, for the drivers.

There is little chance of getting a bad microcontroller. These will be flashed with a default firmware at the fab, so we should know before they go out if the controller is faulty.

I have no plans to make a version with a modular controller. The benefits of having the controller on-board far outweigh any negatives.

Thanks!!

those photos are  and pushing me over the edge. getting close to cancelling. luckily two more days to make up my mind, and two more days of photos :-\
Going to be a down to the last minute decision, great thing cancelling in the last minute is easy in that other site.

I'm using an mac so I don't think I will be using winavr, though Im sure there is a mac alternative I can find.

With regards to the MCU. I'm still new to MCU, only familiar with a bit of arduino, but slowly trying to get into plain 8 bit AVR.
When I buy an 8bit Atmega fresh from the store, it is blank with no bootloader.
Is it right to assume that the microcontroller in your board is just like any AVR microcontroller? It has special firmware/software from you, no special bootloader, and I can just program it with something like AVRISP/ATMEL ICE if I wanted to?

Glad to know there is almost 0% chance of getting a bad microcontroller.

Thanks too for being responsive. It's influencing my decision too, as buying from nice and real person gives a satisfaction that you can't get from buying from a no-name no-face website.

For the mac, I used this guide (http://www.uriahbaalke.com/?p=106) to install Cross Pack for AVR, and dfu-programmer.

The controller is flashed via ISP at the factory to install the default firmware and bootloader. :)

Does the JD45 allow Fn keys to activate when holding the key?
Do TMK, and Easy AVR allow this for the JD45?
For example

press and release enter key = enter
press and hold enter = Fn

press and release spacebar = spacebar
press and hold spacebar = Fn

press and release caps lock = caps lock on/off
press and hold caps lock = Fn

press and release any key =  default key
press and hold any key = Fn

Thansk

Yes.  These are called dual-use keys, or tap keys.

Yes.  These are called dual-use keys, or tap keys.

Does this tap or double-use function also work when the additional function I want is not fn key or will not use a function key?

ex:
holding left alt = alt
pressing and release alt = [ key
holding left shift = shift
pressing left shift and release = ( key?

And can I separate shift-keys, I mean, can I program colon key into one key and program the semicolon key into another key without having to press shift?

It works with my code.  I don't know enough about TMK to speak for that.

No, you can't do this. The firmware sends HID scan codes to the operating system. Semicolon and colon are bound to the same scan code by the HID spec, not by the firmware.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what he wants, but he could bind one key to semicolon and bind another key to shift+semicolon, right?

Your understanding is correct.
The JD45 allows macros correct? such assigning !@#$%^&*() to qwertyuioop if I wanted to without the need of a shift key? or assigning colon and semicolon separately?

If you want, you can just download my keymapper and play with it.  For shift+semi you don't even need a macro, you just select "with shift"

Does the atmega32u4 on your JD45s have any special bootloader installed aside from the Atmel USB DFU Bootloader that originally comes from Atmel out of the factory?
I know your boards come with a default layout programmed  in. Is it correct to say that by uploading in new Hex files outputted by TMK and EasyAVR, I will have completely overwritten whatever firmware/software you or Tex have added and the only code in the Atmega32u4 that will remain is the Atmel USB DFU bootloader and the new Hex files I/buyers have inputted? I'm really particular about what's put inside the chip and since your keyboard isn't open source, just wanted to ask your personally, just don't want weird/unknown/hostile code in my USB devices. Just the paranoia in me.

Also, Great photo, its looks make me disregard my preference for open source keyboards. My finger is already on the cancel button for that other keyboard.

By the way, are those abs or pbt on the Honey Round 5? Maybe you could have a GB for that set made especially for the standard layout of the JD45
Title: Re: [GB] JD45 KEYBOARD PRE-ORDERS
Post by: jdcarpe on Tue, 01 March 2016, 10:12:00
Yes, the Atmel DFU bootloader is the only thing existing on the controller, besides the default or user generated firmware. And you can erase the firmware with your flashing utility of choice.

The Round 5 keycaps are SA profile, double shot thick ABS from Signature Plastics. The group buy was organized by 7bit at Deskthority.

What type of USB connector is on this board?  I need to start looking at cables.

It uses a USB Mini B connector, like many keyboards do. I considered using USB-C, but I wanted to keep a very robust connection with the cable.

No, I don't have any plans  to open source the design.

Is the only difference between the JD45 and other marketed-as-open-source keybards the fact that the PCB and plate designs are not open source?

The software for the firmware like EasyAVR and TMK are open source, so is it correct to say that if the PCB and plate design and maybe the case designs were open sourced, the JD45 would be as open source as those other marketed-as-open-source keyboards?

Or am I missing a part of the puzzle?

No, you're not missing anything. The only keyboards I know of that are claimed to be open sourced are the GH60 and Input Club's IC60 (Infinity), maybe the ErgoDox? Usually they run one buy first, before releasing the open hardware design files.

Thanks!
I know you've already mentioned here that you have no plan to open source the designs. but it might be something nice to consider in the future.
I guess you just have to balance the marketing and potential customers that that open sourcing everything will bring, and the loss of earnings from people who will use the files to print their own boards and not buy or other manufacturers just producing it and selling it, but then again, other people/manufacturers could/maybe also manufacture something similar without the JD45 PCB design.

Or you could also possibly provide the PCB designs to buyers of your keyboard? Just a thought. Might be added incentive for some, though I'm not sure if it can be called open source if it is contingent on a purchase, but still an incentive some will welcome.

I'm not sure if you are bound to the PCB designers wishes or the manufacturer's contract, Im just spitting ideas out there, food for thought, just from my interest in the JD45.

Mind you, I don't need the incentive, as I'm already set on this keyboard. :p

Honestly the first time I think owning many keysets comes in handy; you can show everyone what they want.

More pics. More orders!

Thanks for this wonderful offer, the keyboard looks terrific. I never heard of a 40% keyboard before, but are amazed by the pictures and are just about to buy.
Sorry to ask this, but I never got this clear, despite reading this thread over and over:
1.) When I buy this keyboard from http://jd45.carpekeyboards.com/ and want the keyboard like in
http://i.imgur.com/FwNaBhCl.jpg, then I have to order "Square Corners"; is this correct?
2.) When I buy the keyboard "assembled" (which is what I like to do), is the layout like in
     http://i.imgur.com/FwNaBhCl.jpg
     or like in
     http://i.imgur.com/z5cyBTE.png
? The difference is the upper right key (BS oder /|). I can live with both, but would prefer the second.
3.) Is the "assembled" keyboard ready to be plugged in and typed on right ahead, or is it just
assembled with the software still missing. I.e. can I use the keyboard immediately, or do I have to
do some programming job before I can use it.
Thanks in advance for clarifying this, I hope my coming order can be handled in time.
Many greetings,
theM

1) Yes, that is the "square corners" version
2) It's like the second image. I decided to change the order of that key, but don't have a new keycap sample of it
3) It will be ready to run, with a default firmware installed

Thanks for your support!

Ah, better, thank you.

No, there isn't a hole for a 1.5u key in the left corner. You COULD do 1.25-1.25-1.00-6.00-1.00-1.25-1.25 though.

Hi, I have a question about ordering.

What forms of payment are you accepting?

From a snippet I read in this thread, it suggest you are processing through PayPal. I don't have a PayPal account; will I have to create one in order to make payment or are there other methods? ie. credit card

I don't think you have to create a PayPal account in order to pay using a credit card. The billing is done via PayPal on my end, but you can pay with your credit card without a PayPal account.

http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/00232dd383258db27c2c

Were you talking about the physical layout? Or the keymap programming? Because I'm pretty sure you can program it exactly like that, if you want, using metalliqaz' Easy AVR firmware.

Physically, I could remap them with software, I am just curious about my designated bottom layout, i.e 1.5-1-1-6-1-1-1.5. So I can only do 1.25-1-1-6-1-1-1.25?

You would use two 1.25's, instead of a 1.5 and a 1, like this:

this will be my first 40% :D
went with a black rectangle MX DIY, going to throw 78g zealios on it i think

Does the DIY option include keycaps?
No, it is supposed to be a 'barebones' type kit. I assume people will want to bring their own switches and keycaps.

I am thinking about offering a keycap group buy after the keyboard group buy ends.

I want to get the DIY kit to solder LEDs but, is there some way to get  those keycaps close to the ship date?
I don't have the correct keycaps to cover this board and it would be nice to have the ones that are labeled  :thumb:

Swore off SA caps a few years ago, but that setup just looks . . . RIGHT.   I don't know how to describe it, but that pic really does something to me. I've got way too many boards at the moment... Or maybe not. I'll think it over tonight.

Hey JD, I am wondering if you have the dimensions of the case/keyboard?
I want to compare the size to my HHKB.
Also could I request some side on and front/back pictures of the different case styles especially the blocked corners case?
I'm still undecided, need a nudge.
Cheers

I am also looking for the dimensions of the fully assembled version.  dummytim is making me a case and I want to make sure it fits  ;D  Thanks!

I just measured one of the production samples, and I got:

10.125" x 3.50" x 1.125"

Actually, that is measured to the top of the stock keycaps. They are uniform bottom row OEM profile.

Cutting it close but finally joined and paid  8)

Really wasn't sure if I was going to join or not but I love small keyboards too much to miss this! Thanks jd and can't wait to try these bad boys out :thumb:

So what is the status on this GB? it's already closed right?

Yes, the GB ordering phase is closed. I want to thank everyone for their orders and prompt payments!

Now the pre-orders are being sent to manufacture. Once they are complete, they will be shipped to me for distribution to all the buyers.

...And then a second round?  :thumb:

Oh no! I just missed it :( Any chance for round 2?  ;)
Me too...I forgot to place my order before it closed.

Me too.  Paying too much attention to the Planck and missed this one.  A bit more expensive, but I think I'll like the layout more.

UPDATE TIME

So, everything is going well. I got the funds transferred to TEX, so that production can begin. Now we just wait for the keyboards to be made, so that I can deliver them to you!

PLEASE, EVERYONE, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS, CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. The worst thing you could do would be to file a dispute with PayPal, so please talk to me before doing anything like that. I am always available here via PM, or via email. If you need my email address, you can use the one from your PayPal invoice, from the order confirmation, or [my GH username] at gmail.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Hey JD, nice that this GB is going smooth .

I have a question, I plan to put cherry-profile keyset to this JD45, however I am finding difficulties in completing the set because of unique size, particularly 1.75u enter key. AFAIK, no one made cherry-profile R2 1.75u enter key(not even blanks), correct?

You could always use a 1.75u center-stemmed Caps Lock key.

GH won't be gone from my interpretation.  It's just that few are footing the bill, and they want to spread that around, whether via advertising/affiliates and/or donations.

Thank you for the update Justin; it's very much appreciated and a relief to know that the product has been made and is ready for shipment.

However, I'm concerned about jdcarpe's absence in responding to inquiries made about the status of this group buy for the past few weeks.

A question for Justin: have you been in contact with jdcarpe?

jdcarpe will be the one in receipt of your shipment to the US before distributing to us, the participants in the group buy---as was stated by him on page 1. Should we be concerned if the organizer is missing from the conversation?

i have spoken to jdcarpe recently, there is no need to be concerned about his current absence, he is just taking some personal time, he is very committed to this project and im sure will be back shortly now that production is completed and nearing time for shipment

I just now ordered the shipping boxes for these, which should arrive by next Thursday. So excited to start getting these shipped out to you all!

Hang in there, it's almost finished!

P.S. As an aside, I wanted to explain my absence. As I have posted here before, having my PayPal account locked and my funds inaccessible really started a path toward depression for me. I have been in a funk for a while now. Add to that that I was recently laid off from work, and you might begin to see why I have been absent. I do want to thank everyone here who sent me kind words of support. It feels good to know there are people out there pulling for you.  Thanks for reading. -JD

I was concerned with your absence, hence my inquiry above. I'm sorry to hear about the situation with PayPal; please know this though, I strongly took heed of your request from April 2nd to address any concerns we had to first contact you personally or here at geekhack and not through PayPal. I chose geekhack.

I feel for you; the economy is a false illusion---I'll just limit my views on this subject with just that. I wish you well and hope you regain your footing again.

Oh, for sure, by a large margin. The HHKB style seems to be a niche aesthetic.
Title: Re: [GB] JD45 KEYBOARD PRE-ORDERS
Post by: pnh2389 on Fri, 01 July 2016, 21:01:04
I've had a look at the HHKB keyboard multiple times and struggle to see how I can work with its layout and lack of programmability. The concept of using the pinkie finger to hold down the fn key and using the remaining fingers, on the same hand, to hit the arrow keys seem awkward to me.

That said---and contradictorily---the image of that HHKB layout on the JD45 appeals to me. With less keys on the bottom row but compensated with progammability, there's less travel to those keys, which translates to further efficiency and compact handling. That's an appealing experience.

If there's a 2nd group buy and I am afforded the opportunity, I would go for the block case.

Will these require a signature for delivery? We've had a lot of recent delivery thefts in my neighborhood, and I'm afraid this irreplaceable delivery is when it'll happen to me.

Yes, I plan on shipping all of them with signature confirmation. Hope that helps!

Yeah, it's disappointing that they went live with sales before I could get the group buy orders out, but not much I can do about that. I'm going to try and get these out as quickly as possible.

Please understand, though, that all my shipping funds are locked in my PayPal account, and I have no access to them. I also have no job at the moment, so no income. I will get these shipped, but it's going to take some creativity for me to do it.

It was by chance that I saw the JD45 on mechanicalkeyboards.com.

From time to time, I check their 'incoming stock' page at https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/incoming.php and then I have a look at their 'just arrived' page https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/arrived.php to check out the inventory turnover. The JD45s were never on their 'incoming' page, it just appeared on their 'just arrived' page without notice---at least none that I'm aware of.

That, to put it mildly, sucks.  Not you, in the least.  But Paypal.  How much is the total shipping that you have to foot?  And has paypal said how many you have to ship before they will unlock the funds?

UPDATE: And to reiterate, I don't look at any of this as being on you.  But getting that information, even not being in the drop, knowing that you have the money in Paypal, I'd be willing to contribute to getting things flowing.  And I'm sure that there are others here that would be willing to do the same.  Especially considering your personal situation, and it seems that Paypal has you at a loggerjam.

Since I didn't know the status of this GB I went ahead and picked up one so I ordered it basically when they were up for sale.

(sigh) I'm not mad, I'm just sad that all my chances of getting a 40% board have all seen delays.

I'm still waiting on my assembled JD40 since Nov. 2014. Now PayPal is screwing over JD and delaying my JD45, all the while folks who weren't part of the initial GB are already getting boards from MK.com.

No biggie for me. I actually changed my mind and want a blocked case now. So I just ordered the kit from MK.com and I'm just going to sell the other kit once it comes in. Here's to hoping it doesn't get lost in the mail. Hah!

Yes, you're correct. The intention was to make it an option, but it looks like the switch pin pads were never added. I completely missed that during the prototyping phase, and that's on me. It will be fixed in the next revision, but there isn't much we can do about the PCBs that have already been produced.

No, I don't have an estimate for when we will have a new revision made.

Officially, that switch option doesn't exist, but I was planning to include it. Future revisions will almost certainly include it, as I stated, but I never mentioned it in the OP because it wasn't officially supported.

If anyone really needs that switch option on your current PCB, the workaround is to drill two small holes where the switch pins would be located, and run jumper wires to the next switch pin pads on the PCB. The plate supports the option, and the stabilizer holes exist on the PCB already.

You may have to clip the PCB support legs off the switch, or slightly enlarge the mounting holes in the PCB, also.

Finally, please heed this advice from Wilba:
Quote from: Wilba
They need to take care not to short the switch pins to the ground or 5V planes. Preferably solder wires to the switch pins before installing the switch into the plate - easier than soldering the wire to a switch pin inside a small hole while trying to avoid the solder joint touching the PCB.

I painted the inside of the drill hole with nail polish, but I'll do the wire soldering outside of the pcb as well

My blocked JD45 with GMK skidata+

I had to mod the pcb to support the 2unit backspace, but got it working after some trial and error. I have jailhouse greens in this thing and love the way they feel.  JD, nice job on this kit, it is seriously top notch.  Perfect finish on the case, you truly did not overlook any details!

What I thought was a good development (providing proof of delivery for the list of orders they gave me) has turned into a temporary tragedy from PayPal. They now want proof of delivery for every transaction since January in my account before they will release the funds.

So, basically, this is me with my hand out, begging for some assistance. If there is anyway you can afford to send me a few bucks to help defray the cost of shipping all these orders out while PayPal holds my funds hostage, it would be greatly appreciated. I can accept Bitcoin, Amazon Payments, and Google Wallet. I would like to avoid PayPal at all costs (ha!), even though I do have a separate personal account.

Also, I started a GoFundMe campaign, if anyone wants to go that route. [link removed]

That sounds so counter-intuitive.

I've never had my Paypal account locked so I don't know how it works.

Are you able to use the funds to pay for shipping (use the print shipping label option from Paypal for USPS/UPS)?

Or is the account disabled completely for you?

You don't need to raise the full amount for GoFundMe, is that right?

I've contributed a bit to help out.

Best of luck getting this sorted out.

That's great!  It's nice to see the community kick in!

I have a question about my JD45.

Sitting flat, there's an angle on the caps:

I was going to use the anodized aluminum feet from MD, but there's no space to mount on the bottom.

My solution is to gorilla glue the feet to the case.  I figured I'd ask first to see if this is A Bad Idea (TM) for some reason.

Use double sided tape so you can remove the feet if need be.

I have a few questions I don't see answered.

1. I see that resisters are already on the PCB, but is there a voltage range for LEDs?  Will any 3mm color and type work?
2. For the blocked version, do you break off the corners of the PCB yourself? and is that by hand?  Sounds scary. What about a Dremmel?
3. The example photos for the blocked version show the large spacebar. Can you use the split smaller spacebar method for the blocked version as well?  Any drawbacks?

What a great community here.  Love how helpful everyone is.  Thank you and Kudos.

1. Any 3mm LED should work fine. The resistor value was chosen to work well enough with LEDs in the 2-3V range.
2. You will need to cut the PCB, using a saw or dremel. It won't break off by hand.
3. You can use either the large (6.00/6.25) or small (1.25-1.75-1.75-1.25) spacebars with either version, blocked or squared.

PSA - this board uses pcb mount stabilizers.... so if you opt to use a long spacebar, make sure you have pcb mount cherry stabs and that you put them in before soldering your switches... otherwise you will hate life

Haha yeah, sometimes you can just desolder the switches around the spacebar and try to work the stabilizers in there, but it's not easy. Forgetting to mount PCB stabs until you've already soldered the switches makes for a generally bad time.

PSA - this board uses pcb mount stabilizers.... so if you opt to use a long spacebar, make sure you have pcb mount cherry stabs and that you put them in before soldering your switches... otherwise you will hate life

The time is nigh!  I am noticing something...

The number of holes at the bottom of this PCB is a little overwhelming for a newb.  I am getting the blocked version and going with the two split 1.75 space bars (exactly like mrboovn's picture above). Any tips on choosing the right holes?

My plan is to put the switches (with keycaps for spacing) into the metal plate, then place that against the PCB to see which holes get plugged.  can't lose right?  Is that what everyone else is doing?

Yes, that's the way to go. If you have a universal plate, you might need to put keycaps on the bottom row switches, just to confirm they are being placed in the right switch holes. :)

Thank you jdcarpe for making sure this runs smoothly, despite the difficulties! Was about to chip in however much to help you ship these beauties out, but looks like most people here beat me to it!

I would like JDCARPE to know, that 4 keyboards had to die for their "caps lock" keys...

don't worry, 3 of the 4 were from thrift stores  ;)

R2 PuLSE.  All Row 3 mods and short a 1.75

Not quite 25 posts to post on the GH market either  :-\  Hopefully mech market pulls through.  Signature Plastics only has a stepped 1.75 in black.

metalliqaz' Easy AVR USB Keyboard Firmware and Keymapper (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51252.0) is probably the easiest. Just be sure to select JD45 (Carpe Keyboards) as the base.

It's the little button switch on the bottom of the PCB. There is a hole in the case to access it. Just press once while connected to USB.

You may need to install WinAVR first, before jumping into bootloader mode for the first time, if using Windows.

Also, you'll need Atmel Flip to flash the firmware to the chip. Controller type is ATmega32U4.

I'm having some trouble it seems.  I installed WinAVR and when i press the button I assume it enters bootloader mode because the keyboard stops registering key presses.  But Atmel Flip tells me "Could not open USB device."  Any suggestions?

It's the driver. With the keyboard connected in bootloader mode, go to Device Manger and uninstall it. Then disconnect the keyboard. When you connect it again, and jump to bootloader, it should install the driver.

It should install the correct driver if you've already installed WinAVR and Flip. I don't know what else to tell you. There are several threads here on GH related to flashing firmware.

THANK YOU.  I kept looking for the driver in the subfolders of "USB" and didn't think to let it search the actual "USB" folder for the driver.  That fixed the driver problem I was having and Atmel Flip not finding the device.

Hi JD, thank you for creating this beautiful board!

There's only one issue with mine: I can't make the 6u spacebar work. I used Easy AVR/dfu-programmer on the Mac to flash the firmware and chose JD45 (Carpe keyboards) with the layout "6x Space". Other custom key mappings work but I found the spacebar unable to create any space with either the default JD45 firmware or with my own layout. I even tried defining the spacebar to produce a letter "T" in my own layout but it still seems to register nothing. Desoldering and soldering the switch under the spacebar also didn't help.

Please let me know what info you need to troubleshoot this issue. Really appreciate your help.

Update: Aqual's KeyTest indicates that the spacebar didn't produce any keystroke.

Try it with the default firmware .hex file I uploaded here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=83626.0). That should work, even with the 6u spacebar.

Glad that worked for you! You can now modify it to your liking, using the <ALL KEYS> version. I guess I need to help fix the 6x version, and submit a pull request for Easy AVR.

First day I used it at work, one colleague wanted to use my computer. He sat down, stared at the board for 3 seconds, smiled, and grabbed an Apple keyboard from the next desk.

Anyway I have a few issues that I couldn't figure out

- How do you get F1~F12 to work?
- How to trigger the macro defined in EasyAVR?
- Has anyone tried to superglue aluminum feet? How did it go?

Thanks.

My coworkers know not to use my keyboards.
The function keys use the second FN button and are in the same place as the number keys
The macros have to be assigned to a key... something like M1  M2 etc...
I wouldnt do something that permanent. I dont like elevating my keyboards anyway

-Pressing and holding FN2 should trigger F1~F12 See attachment
-Which macro are you speaking of?
-I would recommend using Double-sided tape to secure the feet as it is a less permanent option and will make the feet easy to remove if you choose to.

I did using backing tape, and it definitely helps with the angle, but is not permanent. I believe the conversation is in this thread.

Thank you for that link.  I like this keyboard, and I'm not discounting it yet, but I came here looking to find the components for a JD40, and I think that's still what I want.  Some of them seem to have a more consumer ready box-like surround for the PCB, others have two plates held apart by short lengths of tube with screws, 6 of them I think.  I wish my vocabulary were better, but I'd be very happy to find the later parts rather than the former.  What did you call the style I prefer?

However, upon reconnecting, it no longer registers any keypress. I reflashed to the default you provided but still nothing. Is the a way to troubleshoot/fix this? I've attached the files below.

Hmmm, I wonder if it didn't pick up the hex file when you were flashing. If it didn't, Flip would simply erase the programming, blank the firmware, and verify it to be blank. I bet that's what happened. Try it again, but do the step where you select the firmware hex file later in the process, just before flashing.

Edit: Just realized something -- there is a space in the name of your hex file. Rename it without the space, and Flip won't blank your firmware.

Omg, that's it! Thanks for the super fast response. Totally enjoying typing on the JD45 :)

Also, I'm figuring out how to program individual key backlighting. For instance, I'd like the WASD keys to light up when I toggle Function layer 2 for my arrow cluster. Is there a way to do that?

No, the backlighting LEDs aren't individually addressable. They are all on the same circuit, except for the Caps Lock LED.

No, all the layout options are here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79797#post_options).

Any set that included options for JD40 compatibility should work. You can see Hack'd by Geeks, Green Tea, and R5 (Honey) in the OP. Also, Deep Space had a JD40 kit.

Help needed!

I have soldered all switches and diodes. Uploaded the firmware using the step-by-step guide here: http://jd40.info/

All diodes are light, but there are problem with keys not working. I have tried to resolder the switch, shorten it with a screwdriver, but no luck.

The keys not working are: D11, D23, D34, D44

Here is the rest of the board:

So, how and where do I debug this problem. Aqua's Key Test register no action on the keys not working.

----
Tested with jd40_default.hex, still not working. Can the board be defect?

If you have access to a multimeter that you can test continuity with, I'd test those switches by touching the probes of the continuity tester to the pins on the switch and then pressing the switch to see if you have a connection. Short of that, I'd desolder the switch completely, clean up the connections, and drop a new switch in and see if that solves your problem. In my limited experience, 9 times out of 10 its a solder problem even if it looks good to the naked eye.

Tested this, and all the switches are working as they should.

If all 4 of those switches in column 11 aren't working, the problem is most likely a diode. Try reflowing solder on the top switch diode, labeled D11.

I removed the K11 switch, resoldered the D11 diode, but still the same result.

Can it be one of the other diodes in that column? Or... I'll order another pcb from techkeys.

Hi Linux users of the JD 45 keyboard.
This is a summary of how to (re)program the firmware of the JD45 keyboard with Linux. This information is maybe found elsewhere, however I didn't find a complete guide and it cost me some search, trial and error, so maybe you enjoy having this information compiled here. My keyboard came from this group buy and was delivered about a week ago. I like it a lot. Thanx JD.

JD45 Linux (re)programming guide:
Tested with Debian, will most probably also work with Ubuntu and similar.
Step 1: Install python with
         sudo apt-get install python
Step 2: Download EasyAVR (Info found at https://deskthority.net/wiki/Easy_AVR_USB_Keyboard_Firmware (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Easy_AVR_USB_Keyboard_Firmware)).
         wget -O easyavr.zip https://codeload.github.com/dhowland/EasyAVR/zip/master
Step 3: Unpack and adjust Easy AVR
         unzip easyavr.zip # Creates a Directory ./EasyAVR-master
         cd EasyAVR-master
         chmod u+x easykeymap.sh
Step 4: Call Easy AVR
         ./easeykeymap.sh
Step 5: Generate a new default keymap
         File -> New Default Layout -> JD45 (Carpe Keyboards) [ <All Keys> ]
Step 6: Edit your keymap; Help is found in the "Help" Menu of EasyAVR
Step 7: Build the firmware from it:
         File -> Build Firmware -> "mynewfirmware.hex"
Step 7: Install dfu-programmer:
         sudo apt-get install dfu-programmer
Step 9: Connect your JD45 keyboard to your computer and press the little button at the buttom while it is connected. You will see something like
  ... usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=03eb, idProduct=2ff4
  ... usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
  ... usb 1-4: Product: ATm32U4DFU
  ... usb 1-4: Manufacturer: ATMEL
  ... usb 1-4: SerialNumber: 1.0.0

  in your syslog.
Step 8: Erase and upload
         sudo dfu-programmer atmega32u4 erase --debug 5
         sudo dfu-programmer atmega32u4 flash mynewfirmware.hex --debug 5
Step 9: Disconnect and reconnect your JD45 keyboard. It will work with the new layout now.

Note 1: Please adapt file names to your needs.
Note 2: The default firmware at your board is lost. I did not find a way to save it. dfu-programmer dump did not work.
Note 3: The firmware offered at http://jd45.info/ (http://jd45.info/) is NOT identical with the firmware preinstalled at the keyboard. However it works fine also. The preinstalled firmware is really lost. As I didn't really like it, this was no problem for me.
Note 4: I didn't need FLIP or Teensy that are mentioned in most other guides. I couldn't install them anyway.

Hope this works for you. Thanx in advance for comments. Enjoy. Many greetings.

Thanks! It's been working so well for coding. I don't know how I've lived without the left thumb backspace, and I'm loving the macro record/play feature. I've got muscle memory working for me now and I think I'm faster with this than with my HHKB, but when I've had to use my much quieter HHKB on the floor at my office, it's been an easy transition back. Anyway, it's a layout I'm not fighting at all anymore. It feels perfectly natural to me.

You can usually just snap it off with your hand, although I've only done that on something that only has one dimension to it. It's just a saw blade I imagine.

Search for Dremel cutting wheel or Dremel saw and you should find it.   Thought it was standard in Dremel kits- mine came with a few different ones like that.

It's all granite DSA, but I had to get the base, icon mods, icon pro mods, and icon extreme mods to get all the small modifiers and tab and 1u fn and 1.75u shift.

That's what I thought.. .I was just trying to verify.  When I was looking, they didn't have the pro mods in production yet, so I was holding off.  Glad to have that verified.  That *is* a lot though.  And expensive!

Ok, so if I'm going to install a 6.25 spacebar on the blocked JD45. I believe I need to get some cherry stabilizers, and I have some coming in soon, but how do I install them? They are PCB mount right? I've only ever messed with plate mount. How much different is the installation?

The mounts clip into the PCB and the whole thing has to be assembled before you solder in the swtiches, because trying to fit the stabs when the plate is attached is almost impossible.

Things to double check: make sure your mounts are on the PCB the right way around (I've done that wrong before), make sure you put the stems in the right way round (I also have done this wrong) amd finally make sure the wire is clipping into the mounts and the stems can move up and down freely  :thumb:

Yours has a perfect dream-look for my ideal JD45 though. What switches are you having in that beauty?

By the way, if I use this layout, then I may get around with only 3 sets:

I am still new to these mechanical keyboards.  I bought the pre-assembled version with MX Browns. I am getting a 35% board with Gateron Browns, a MiniVan with Alps to test those, and building a 60% with Zealios.

If I end up loving the JD45 layout more than the others, I may desolder the switches and replace them with the best I find.  TBH, I'm disappointing with the feel of MX browns. I had hoped for a more significant tactile feeling rather than the very weak, gritty feeling.

I've been trying to do something similar in EasyAVR, it would appear that the LEDs are all set in a single couple :(

not sure how to split it

Most common cone feet will work. You can glue them on, use double sided tape or drill holes for them.

On LEDs:

I have added an LED to the in-switch led slot for only the capslock key (which in my case is the function layer).

In EasyAVR, I set the LED called "underlight" to be on when Fn layer 1 is active and blink a few times when fun layer 2 is active.

I want this behavior out of the whole backlight rather than the status LED on the PCB. It doesn't look like EasyAVR can do it. I'm diving into QMK which is allegedly compatible with the JD 45 but it looks like it will require a bit more knowledge of general keyboard programming than I have this week.

If anyone has done it or can point me toward the files in QMK that drive the LEDs for status and backlighting, I should be able to use the differences to hack it together Friday.

Otherwise, check back in a month.

I'd like to buy just a JD45 PCB as the one I've got from the blocked corner kit is a bit buggered up via some repair mishaps.

I contacted mechanicalkeyboards.com where I bought the kit, but they told me to take a hike. I told them I can't get any kind of communication started with JDCarpe as he seems to have gone silent. The responded by ignoring me.

So now I'm stuck sourcing a new PCB on my own. Any suggestions.

You can't get a new PCB people have tried asking JD but he said he doesn't have extras for sale.

Is this layout actually possible?

I have A 6U spacebar coming in with my Terminal set and I'd like to tear up my MX Browns build and redo with with Gat Yellow switches, terminal caps, etc.

The part that's throwing me off is that everyone seems to do 1, 1, 6.25, 1.25, 1 instead of 1, 1.25, 6, 1.25, 1... I am finding the 6u stabilizer to be the main difficulty in this.  Does anyone make them? is it just time for some pliers, a ruler, and a 7U stabilizer wire?

Not only that, but I consider the JD40/45 the #1 40% PCBs. Their quality is top notch. Also, even though, it may now may take a while, if you pm/email him he will follow up w/ you too. I've 4 JD40s & a JD45 (standard layout). I'll always support JD Carpe's products. I've been trying to get MassDrop to run a JD40 &/or JD45 gb for the longest. I really MassDrop will finally run a gb for either or both.

I've 4 JD40s & a JD45 (standard layout). I'll always support JD Carpe's products. I've been trying to get MassDrop to run a JD40 &/or JD45 gb for the longest. I really MassDrop will finally run a gb for either or both.

I didn't find this to be true at all. I had an issue with one of my JD45 boards (that I bought through mechanicalkeyboards.com) and wanted to RMA or at least purchase a replacement. They shut me down, said they don't have boards for RMA.

I contacted JDCarpe several times to buy a replacement through him. No response. So I went back to mechanicalkeyboards.com to see if they can contact him on my behalf and was thusly ignored.

I love the JD45 but damn if I can't get anyone to sell me a replacement PCB or even acknowledge me at all for that matter. Very frustrating.

Sorry to hear that. All of  my interactions w/ him have been great. I wish the best w/ your issue though.

When was the last time you communicated with him? I've been trying to get ahold of him since Nov last year with no luck. He doesn't appear to be active on these forums or Reddit, both places where I tried communicating with him.

I last spoke to JD about a month and a half ago.

I'd like a blocked JD45 PCB just for future proof.

Wish to use mine for decades.  ;D

Hey, I'm glad he's not just disappeared off the face of the earth at least. He probably has a lot going on so I won't begrudge him that.

Hi ,

If you just want PCBA , that you can connect with me ,

I'm quite interested in getting more JD45s and if the stock of blocked corners is gone from mechanicalkeyboards.com, my next best option is to build one from similar components.

Do you have them for sale or have the designs to build new ones?

---

Need help with plate!

I just pulled some caps to check this and realized that by getting the assembled JD45, it came with a "standard layout" plate. As such, I can not put my 6U spacebar on because the stabilizers and switch location won't work with this plate.

I guess my two options are to buy a JD45 with locked formers that came from a kit or try to get a plate and case built along with the PCB.

Yay for projects.

I'm definitely interested in another run of blocked corner JD45s.

Pmd you! Hopefully you can still provide an extra PCB... I almost killed mine just now while trying to desolder switches  :-X.
