Wow.

That's... a crap excuse for grammar, there.

Here, let me fix that for you:

Maybe I'm just losing it lately, but is there some kind of respect-going-out-the-damned-window issue here?

So you join, you make (as far as I can see?) no contributions regarding the actual topics of the site, and then you go off insulting a respected member of the site?

I'm all for welcoming new members and perhaps bhtooefr wasn't quite perfect about that, but come on...

It's either trolling or some dumb-ass middle school kid that got big brother's/sister's old laptop and thinks they are hot **** now.

However, to humor said dumb-ass middle school kid, you can't play Counter Strike on that computer.....EVER!  Nothing you can do will make it play games better.

Yeah, that's why the guy posted that (in other words, he's not expecting an answer to his inquiry, just wants to flame at users). He found a really old dell laptop from either wikipedia or google (which he probably doesn't even own because he resorted to the first stock image that comes up in google images) and thought it would be funny to ask if he could play a modern game on it.

Laptops, in terms of malleability, are terrible for upgrades. They're built in a very proprietary way.

OK, I'll admit that I was a bit too harsh. Still, proper grammar is good for communicating with people.

That said, the best thing you can do to make that machine faster is to get rid of it. That machine has, what, a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4, or so? And it's got Intel Extreme Graphics, IIRC, which is downright terrible for performance. I had one when it was new, and it sucked then, they suck even more today. An old Latitude D610 or ThinkPad T43 wouldn't be too expensive.

However, if you insist on keeping it, the best upgrade you can do is upgrade the RAM. Looks like you can put a max of 1 gig in there, using two 512 meg DDR266 modules. That should help a lot.

You might be able to upgrade the processor to something faster, but anything that's faster will also run hotter, and I've worked with Inspiron 1150s with faster CPUs that had major heat issues. I'd leave the CPU alone.

To speed a laptop
  • Max out the RAM
  • Get a high RPM hard drive or SSD.
  • Re-install the OS
  • Find a web page that tells you how to disable unnecessary services, and do them all
  • set all power saving features OFF, especially processor sleep and throttling
  • Always use it plugged in to wall power

Some Dell laptops have an upgradable NVIDIA graphics subsystem from the GeForce 4 and newer era.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

The Inspiron 1100 is old enough that it's PATA, so there won't be a performance-oriented SSD for that thing.

Integrated graphics only, and it doesn't have any form of throttling on battery, at least on the one I used to have.

Max out the RAM, probably at 2 gigs.  Also, pay a little visit to Best Buy and get a 250GB PATA drive.  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Western+Digital+-+Scorpio+Blue+250GB+Internal+EIDE+Hard+Drive+for+Laptops/9024218.p?id=1218009475474&skuId=9024218  If there is a computer store in your area that is not a big box store (ie Best Buy, Walmart, etc), you should go there and try to obtain a copy of Windows XP Home Edition being that it is most likely the version of Windows that came on it.  Alternatively, you could try to get a copy through Craigslist, a flea market, or through torrenting.  However, should you torrent a copy of XP, DO NOT use the product key that is included.  Use the one on the bottom of your computer.  As for a graphics solution, you are SOL.  The computer will be decent for playing older games such as MechWarrior 4, Diablo II, StarCraft, WarCraft III, etc.  You can also use it to play ROMs of old SNES, NES, and Genesis games.

datamonger128, you forgot Battle for Wesnoth http://wesnoth.org

It plays without breaking a sweat on my Atom/945G netbook. If I had an inspiron (I cant think of a fun mangling of the name like Dimension->Dementia) 1100 it would definitely work too. but I don't use P4 laptops because there is absolutely no way to make them cool and silent like my mini9. (save for heatpipes and huge heatsinks, but that removes the point of a laptop entirely)

Don't try souping up an Inspiron 1100. It'll catch on fire. I have dealt with them at work and they have significant cooling issues which have often led to hardware failure.

That ought to apply to any P4 laptop, really.

The Pentium 4 is a lousy CPU with regards to heat, and earlier models performance as well.

Newer Intel chips are just as hot, the issue with the Pentium 4 was that it was horribly slow relative to how much heat it spat out.

I have a Pentium 4 laptop, an Inspiron 8500, that cools perfectly well. It's just that the 1100's were just low-end junk and were designed by weasels with Down syndrome.

IIRC, Intel's site says the 2.2 desktop P4 puts out 57.1 W, versus 35 W for the worst of the mainstream mobile parts now. 45 W for the quad core mobile parts.

Is this the Inspiron 1100 Specs?

    * Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz Processor
#  Processor  Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz
# Chipset Type Intel 845GL
# Cache Memory
# Type L2 cache
# Cache size 128.0 KB
    * 256 MB PC2100 DDR Memory
    * 30 Gigabyte Hard Drive
    * 24x CD-ROM Optical Drive
    * 15" XGA (1024x768) LCD and Intel Extreme 3D Graphics with 64MB Shared Memory
    * AC'97 Audio
    * v.92 56Kbps Modem and 10/100 Ethernet
    * Two USB 2.0 Ports and One Type II PC Card Slot
    * 13.1" x 10.8" x 1.8" @ 7.8 lbs.
    * Windows XP Home Operating System

if yes then,

1) upgrade your Ram (with cpuz you can see what kind of ram you need)

2)update your hard Drive. 2,5"" Pata drive @ 7200rpm is fine.

3) Update your drivers. (first look with cpuz orintel chipset id utility what chipset you have and then download chipset and Grafik driver for your NB.)

4) if this doesent work for you then you are ready for a new NB
