[IC] EVA keyboard storage case
« on: Wed, 24 January 2018, 22:37:01 »
Good evening all.

Ive been looking at keyboard case options, and have been in contact with an EVA case manufacturer.  They offer cases for a wide range of products, and have 4 different sized cases for keyboards specifically.  I wanted to see if there is enough interest in a EVA case.  Their MOQ is 500 and the cases are customisable to an extent.  I was thinking about doing an embossed/debossed geekhack logo, but that would depend on the IC.  Their lead time is about 2 months, and the price before shipping should be under $20.  I wont know for certain until after the design and everything is finalized.  Im still early in talks with them, but figured might as well see what the community thinks before I waste any time.

Sizes offered:
L48xW20xH9.5CM >> I think this would be the best option since it will fit a TKL and maybe even 1800
L42xW20xH8.5CM
L41xW19xH8.5CM
L36.5xW16xH10.5CM

Yeah afaik they do gas, but the ones i have had in the past werent bad.  Not sure if they were older ones from the last OTD group buy or what, but I havent had any negative experience with these kinds of cases.  They are fairly rigid, and with the larger size we could have foam in it to keep things secure.

Oh, to store a keyboard, not to build one in. Duh.

Yeah, I'd buy a 60% case.

Under $20? That would be nice!

I’m interested! TKL and 75% bags would be convenient!

Any chance a handle could be attached? Like the TX bags?

Yes they can do handles.  Im trying to get some more sample images from the manufacturer to give ideas of what we could do with it.  Still not 100% on costs, but based on ballpark number I assume it could be done for under 20/per.

They are hard cases, but not extremely rigid.  Below are some other examples of this type of case for different items.

Got an email about foam.  Below are the types that they offer.  They can precut it, but i was hoping for a pick and pull option.  I didnt get a price for their options, but we may be able to do pick and plug seperately but that would be a lot of work for me.  Otherwise we could just do solid foam and let people cut as needed.  Thoughts?

Yeah afaik they do gas, but the ones i have had in the past werent bad.  Not sure if they were older ones from the last OTD group buy or what, but I havent had any negative experience with these kinds of cases.  They are fairly rigid, and with the larger size we could have foam in it to keep things secure.

Is this why the Mira case smells a bit funny? Kind of like a smokey metallic sort of smell?

I'd be interested in multiple, really solid price

I’ll reach out and ask if they can do multiple sizes for the same MOQ.

If they are separate MOQs, would everyone that wanted 60% be okay with the larger one?

I'm in for at least 3 if pricing is reasonable. Would prefer having a couple different sizes, but not too fussed if the largest size is the only one available.

No, the MIRA case smells like that because the cases were left open in a room where people smoke a lot.

If I can, I’ll try and work out a proxy option. Not sure how logistics would work on that but I’d give it a shot. I think we’ll need all the help we can get in order to make an order so I’m not opposed to shipping proxies.

I'd be down for a couple of these but reckon shipping to UK would prolly tip it too expensive. So, that's a total maybe from me.

If I can, I’ll try and work out a proxy option. Not sure how logistics would work on that but I’d give it a shot. I think we’ll need all the help we can get in order to make an order so I’m not opposed to shipping proxies.

In that case I'll put my vote in for TKL and 65% cases, with pick n pull foam of the lumpy looking variety as found in Pelican cases (top of the stack in your foam pic). Also, if it's Geekhack themed then black with orange trim and/or zip might be nice.  :thumb:

Probably instead, especially if cheap.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

Pretty much what i was thinking.  I like the idea of a debossed logo, not sure on size.  But black with orange zipper trim and gh themed pull tabs.  They have offered to send some samples to me for cost of shipping, so once I know this is something we can make happen ill start working out the details and get something in hand to determine if it will be worth the trouble, as well as nailing down some prices etc.

Yeah I would probably buy a few of these regardless of what size(s) get made.

Larger sized cases can accommodate smaller boards with different sized foam where as the opposite is not true. In for some TKL sized cases.

If the price is reasonable I'd be in for two.

I'd be in for a TKL and perhaps a 60%

Checked with the manufacturer and they don’t split up MOQ. So I plan to go with the larger size and smaller boards will just have extra padding :)
