Thoughts on GMK keysets
« on: Tue, 07 August 2018, 12:12:04 »
I just got my first GMK set and fist Cherry profile set at that. Until now I was using OEM profile keycaps only and it's not a mystery that I got used to it. GMK looks absolutely gorgeous and crisp but comparing to my default Pok3r PBT OEM keycaps GMK set sounds higher pitched, less bassy and profile of the keycaps is flatter and all that is making me crazy. Have anyone else experienced something similar? I'm not sure whether that's something that I will be able to get used to and I'm thinking of selling it despite loving how it looks :/

That is because GMK keycaps are made out of ABS plastic. ABS has a specific gravity value of about 1.04 and PBT has an SG of about 1.3. It's a measure of density, so PBT is "denser".

I think that this picture will help you out in terms of seeing how flat / steep keysets are.

As others said PBTs are thicker and therefore sound different. They also wear much differently. I've had PBTs on one board roughly 1 year longer than my GMKs -- and the GMKs are starting to shine whereas the PBTs are not. However, GMKs stuff is very pretty indeed. It's a trade-off that I'm willing to put up with.  ;D

I disagree, ABS sounds deeper than PBT, and thick sounds quieter than thin. For the deepest, fullest sound, I recommend thin ABS.

I compared GMK Cherry profile set to PBT Pok3r OEM keycaps which are a bit thinner and the latter sounds deeper. I think that might be OEM profile more than the material the keycaps are made of. Also I noticed that my Zealio 67g are snappier with OEM keycaps while more mushy and less snappy on Cherry profile keycaps which is interesting. I decided to get rid of GMK keycaps.

My GMK keycaps wore down pretty quickly (a few months) in the WASD area. I wouldn't recommend them if you're gaming.

Yeah my pbt cherry profile caps have a much louder sound signature that any of my other keycaps
