Inspiration

The Gentoo is a penguin themed, 65% keyboard that is a clear successor to my previously released board, The Adélie. With The Adelie paying homage to my favorite types of boards, sub 60's, it excluded the number row. For some, this was a deal breaker and I can't say that I blame them.

"Gentoo" is the name of a different species of penguin and as the name of this board works two fold: not only is this board the "Gen 2" of its predecessor, the Gentoo penguin, as you can see here, is a slightly larger penguin than the Adélie which I find aptly describes the relation between this board and the last.

*two weights are not included, for this render, they are simply for presentation of both sides.*

Approx. 2.33 kg [5.13 lbs] unbuilt assuming brass plate.
Plate Materials: Aluminum, Brass, FR4, Carbon Fiber

Options
Case Color options: E-White, Navy, Forest Green, Black
Base Weight Configuration [$450]: Sandblasted + Coated Brass
PVD Weight Upgrade [+$100]: Silver, Graphite

The Adélie keyboard, at the time of group buy, offered all configurations with PVD Brass. For the Gentoo, the black and silver color scheme will remain. As for the other options ​I have opted for sand blasted brass as a more neutral element to mesh better with more keysets.

*The blue for the Gentoo is not the same blue as the Adélie.

*Color options are only speculated; colors, materials, and finishes are not final.

Likely very similarly priced to the Adélie which retailed for $550 USD.

The model is complete, the PCB is in the works. Assembling the vendors necessary to set a group buy date and begin prototyping.

Black/White is a classic but a bit boring to my taste, the green is a very nice shade but hard to match with many sets.

I love the idea of black with white in concept but leads to a very harsh contrast that I think only plays well for those who want to full commit to the monochrome lifestyle.

Yes! I think my recent purchases with similar value from US vendors came out to be around $200 in total for shipping + tax + duties. Im glad we might get a canadian vendor. Really love this design

As for the red, we can't have it all. I thought, we have to keep the white and black, blue often does better than red, so red got nixed for green. Perhaps for a r2!

The PCB is about done now. Vendors have been arranged. Hopefully to order protos of boards and PCBs for a GB that is sometime this year. Making no promises, these are just my wishes

I would assume because of fingerprints. Personally I don't mind it.

Personally I prefer sandblasted. PVD coating gets scratched eventually.

I now have a functioning prototype in hand, programmed and all though is not in any of the group buy colors. VIA is already set up, Cannon Keys is working on a hotswap version of the PCB.

Some changes need to be made before another round of protos in which we will be getting one in each of the group buy colors for photos.

Also hoping this time around the final colors are closer to the renders. In Adelie both the navy and red turned out to be significantly less saturated than the renders, especially the red which turned out to be probably a good 3 shades lighter than the gorgeous deep red in the renders.
For that reason I may stay away from the navy this time. Green caught my eye but I'm also hoping it won't turn out much lighter than the renders.

Also hoping this time around the final colors are closer to the renders. In Adelie both the navy and red turned out to be significantly less saturated than the renders, especially the red which turned out to be probably a good 3 shades lighter than the gorgeous deep red in the renders.
For that reason I may stay away from the navy this time. Green caught my eye but I'm also hoping it won't turn out much lighter than the renders.

For this reason we try to use proto pictures for group buy photos. While they may not match the renders there shouldn't be any misleading about what you will get when you are participating in the groupbuy.

I was looking very specifically for black with SS weights and if I have to pay extra for one, it kind of makes me question whether I would want to go in for this.

100% agree with Abec13.

I'm not sure if this is intentional but this will certainly alienate a lot of the international ISO users...it certainly will for me.
Unless and this is a big UNLESS, the default hotswap PCB includes support with multiple lay-out options.

This is so unique and nice. I liked very much the design on the Adélie but the layout wasn't for me, but this is perfect! One of the most interesting keyboards of the last year, can't wait!

I'm not sure if you replied this already, but would you consider by any chance to mix and match other colors too? For example PVD +white or PVD + Navy?
Would you consider plate/case foam to make it sound even better, maybe as a separate extra price? I would be interested in this as well.

Casting my voice along with CookieFlow's. Unless hot swap supports multiple layouts or there are multiple hotswap options available (which would seem to negate the point in making them the default), it's unnecessarily limiting.

I realise we're getting a bit close to the wire for these arguments to change anything at this point, but I thought I might as well add my voice to the chorus for whatever it's worth.

Sorry, that layout will not be available for this board. I am finding that that layout is irregular for the exploded 65+ style boards like this one but I may be wrong on that.

How would that even work? The total u on each side of the spacebar for the 7u layout is 3u on each side, whereas 1.5, 1, 1.5 would be 4u which would not work with this exploded layout. Even in the 6.25u layout it has 3.75u on the left and 3u on the right which wouldn't work with that layout of 1.5, 1, 1.5 mods.

Even if you removed one of the 1.5u mods on the right and put a 1u mod on the left, you'd still be left with .5u unaccounted for.
