Title: ABS vs. PBT
Post by: PointyFox on Mon, 23 June 2014, 22:21:49
No, this isn't what you think it is.

I was at work and I put that into search to figure out the engineering differences between them for something I was designing.

Thank you all for completely burying any useful information in the Internet search engines.    :thumb:

Results:
"abs feels a ton better!"
"Are PBT caps worth it?"
"Best typing feel??"
"How long till ABS get shiny?"
"OMG I H8 ABS"
"Backlit PBT?"
"Way to test keycap material"

The wikipedia pages for both ABS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylonitrile_butadiene_styrene) and PBT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polybutylene_terephthalate) are fairly useful for simple information.  What information are you looking for?

That said, I do find this occurrence amusing.   :))

Don't hate the player, hate the search engine algorithms!

I've been complaining about this phenomenon ever since the dawn of the browser and MS FrontPage. Everyone and their dog has been filling the interwebs with garbage since then that has NOTHING to do with hard research.....

Used to be that the web only had university level research and interesting articles / publications, coding methods and algorithms, etc. Useful stuff.

Ah, I miss Gopher. And get off my lawn!  <dang kids nowadays....>

P.S. - POM is best.

Data mining and linguistic analysis is becoming mandatory to make sense out of any serious Google-search attempt :P

Maybe not what you're looking for but PBT is more brittle and harder, so it is more likely to shatter from impact but also is more durable against light scratches/discoloration.

ABS on the other hand is softer, so it will take scratches easier but will bend before shattering (relative to PBT.  it will still shatter)

Also, agree with Oobly.  +1 for POM!

Where does one purchase POM keycaps?

Cherry Corp.'s black key sets are all POM, iirc. There's also a set of rainbow jelly POM that can be found on Taobao (I think), though I'm not sure who makes them.

Where does one purchase POM keycaps?

As Skull_Angel mentioned, the black Cherry G80 and G81 boards have POM caps (although I'm not sure about the stabilised keys, on the light grey boards with PBT caps the stabilised keys are ABS).

PLU ML-87 and ML-G3000 also have POM caps, as does the black Keycool 108. You can sometimes get blank black POM caps from Banggood (87 key and 84 key sets).

The rainbow jelly POM sets on Taobao can often be purchased with a few different options, one of which is a full set of white jelly POMs.

...

Why POM?

It's the densest keycap material so it adds more heft to the keys and feels different to both ABS and PBT. It doesn't get "sticky" like smooth ABS or "dry" like PBT, but remains "slick" a little like Teflon, but not greasy. POM keycaps tend to dampen the higher frequencies that key switches make, so they have less "tick" and "click" and more "thock" and "thump". They just feel like quality, especially on a solid plate mounted board.

Search engine filter bubble.

Okay, maybe not. I get OCN, GH, DT and Ripster's guide at imgur in the top 6 at DDG... the rest is some actual engineering stuff though.

BTW another vote for POM. It's smoooooth and durable.

I wish SP would make a POM DSA set, my money would be spent as soon as hearing about it...
