HoodrowG - Drop in replacement for Matrix 1.2og

NA: Cannonkeys

What is being offered?
- PCB (designed by Ender, QMK and VIA, USB Mini B, ESD protection, layout is same as original PCB but with ISO support added)
- Daughterboard (includes stand offs, jst connectors, light diffuser, light bleed protector)

Aren't PC plates more difficult to cut? I believe you can cut FR4 and pom with a laser but PC needs to be cnc'ed?

I will address some comments and concerns here that I've read on IC form:

Ender dug into the QMK file for 1.2og and found that the lightbar portion utilizes the QMK lighting controls, so should be no issue on getting the light bar portion to work.
In regards to recreating the light bar PCB, I do not have plans on it but if enough people ask for it, I may consider. My reasoning for not wanting to recreate it is because I don't think it breaks or dies if you short the PCB (let me know if that is false).
Plates outside of FR4, I will consider but it is unlikely. I am toying with the idea of releasing plate files so that y'all can get plates made in whatever material you like.
Someone asked about foam, I can look into it.

2.0 PCBs, I don't own a 2.0 (I do want to own one one day), but I don't have plans for that. Now, if someone mails me a PCB and plate, I will be more inclined to get that done.

H87a does not work in the matrix 1.2og, bottom row spacing is odd on matrix boards in general.

Depends what PCB manu can do and how spicy I'm feeling. FR4 plate will just be black probably.

The spacing on Matrix TKLs in general is different from H87a. I measured the spacing between f12 and print screen on my 2.0. It is shorter than H87a.

From my experience building Matrix stuff, the LED parts are always the most finicky, so replicating these would be really helpful

Correct, I currently have an issue with mine where one of the LEDs in the strip triggers incorrectly when cycling through the colors.

Okay, I didn't know this. I'll definitely get the daughter board replacement created (assuming Ender is okay and willing do so).

Are you going to make this a thin boi pcb like the original? I believe it’s 1.2mm but I didn’t put a caliper to it. A spacer for the stabs would be cool. One like Hiney includes for his thin pcbs. Use of the original led daughter board would be nice.

I don't have my 1.2og in hand yet (stuck in Korea apparently) but if it's 1.2mm then this replacement will also be 1.2mm. Spacers, I can have those done.

LED Daughterboard (semiupdate) - I talked to Ender and he said we can get a daughterboard made but he suggested instead of using what the original LEDs to use SMD LEDs. Both replacement daughterboard and original daughterboard should work with the PCB. Any thoughts on this?

Preliminary results from the poll (GH only since I haven't crosspromoted on Reddit)

I will be adding ISO support since from the looks of it, the original plate supports it (sorry ISO haters)
I will also be adding support for LEDs on the following keys: esc, caps lock, and scroll lock
The light bar daughterboard will feature SMD LEDs for ease of assembly
Spacers for the PCB (since it will be 1.2mm like the original) to assist with stabs
No split backspace, but split shift is sort of up in the air (on the fence about this one)

I like the SMT standoffs. Kind of unique and was fun to figure out how to get it to attach. Digi-Key offers them I know, but I’m sure you could dig them up cheaper in bulk.

I'll need to do some testing to see if the screws hit the dampening plastic, but the more I think about it, the more likely I feel about keeping the standoffs. Although going screw in would make things a tiny bit easier, I don't really want to take away from the experience.

PCB + daughter board is getting mailed out today.

Also I've gotten a vendor on board to help run the GB.

Bottom row cannot be made to fit 6.25U since spacing is different and it'll fit weirdly/may not fit at all.
Working on light bar daughterboard + sourcing all the needed screws, standoffs, etc.

Would it be possible to flip the Mini USB port, with it being upside down and all the way on the right side of the board I tend to have to force my cables to stay upside down, causing extra strain on the port when the cable tries to flip.

Daughterboard with array of SMD leds.

Our version will be using more SMD leds, but are smaller. Same effect will be achieved. The combo will include all the necessary hardware (standoffs, jst conenctor, screws, that small gasket/protector against light bleed thingy, etc.)

Sorry, I don't want to have too many things going on at the same time.

We're already offering PCB, daughterboard (acrylic diffuser, rubber gasket thing around lights), more individual parts may increase lead time or cause delays.

Prototypes will be shipping to me in the next few days.

PCB received, sending my Matrix off to get built (I don't trust myself).

I tested it out of the box and was functioning properly, cross checked placement of everything with the original PCB I have and it matched up.

I measured the spacing between left arrow and right control and it's shorter on 2.0 than H88. I don't have H87 but I would assume the spacing is the same on H88 and H87. All Matrix TKLs have the same slightly shorter spacing

ah yeah you are totally right. I actually measured on 1st gen Abel and it is shorter. I just placed 2.0add plate over Jane v2 CE and the spacing is identical. 1.2 OG spacing is the same as 2.0add.

Welp - I got my original 1.2og pcb repaired (it just died one day for no apparent reason). Worked fine again for half a day when I got it back from being repaired, then the same thing happened - just died.

I think this pcb has some real issues man, it needs to go see a counsellor or something.

Can't wait for the replacement!

Upas told me that he'll have time to dive into this once his keyboard GBs are complete (so in a week or so).

I mean, honestly, if I were in your position, it would depend on how often you use your 1.2og. I haven't touched mine since I got my 2.0add. If you're really itching to get yours rebuilt, then I would keep bothering poor Albert.

There were some questions posed about the 1.2og pcb working in AbelX. I am currently using a 1.2og yellow pcb in my abelx, albeit there are some caveats.
- For alphas everything is fine
- For tkl cluster (arrows, print screen/delete etc) spacing is off
- I had to cut and trim the pegs in switches to make them fit, but it works
- Mini-USB port sits further back on 1.2og pcb compared to the abelx pcb, which extends the mini-usb port out about 1cm. Usb ports align, however, which means if you have a small cable it works fine.

I would not recommend doing this, but if you are in a pinch and want to use your abelx, a 1.2og pcb will work...sort of

Hope this helps, and gives some closure to the issue.

edit: I figured it was obvious, but without some janky hand wiring the leds will not work...as there are none on the board.

Got any status update on the project? Really excited to rebuild my 1.2

Btw, if you need files for the half-plates just let me know. I could only find the files for full plate, so I had to make it from that.

While waiting for these to become avail XYZ and I ported the original Matrix 1.2OG PCB to QMK.
The PR just got merged: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/pull/11614

So if you don't want to wait any longer for basic QMK capabilities you can use the original PCB now as well (RGB works too btw).
The only downside of this is that you can't use VIA because of the MCU that was used on those boards (STM32 without EEPROM storage).

(I personally am still going to get one of the replacements for VIA support.)

Makes sense, I'd be happy to join a PCB GB regardless.

Not sure if you're still taking requests on colors, but red would be a great color to have as well.

I've never seen a sound test for a non-aluminum plate 1.2OG, so I guess that would take some deeper investigation / experimentation.
I'd really be interested in the sound and feel of a PC plate on this board.. I'll have to look into something like SendCutSend.

I'm trying to flash QMK on rev1 PCB for the moment until I get my hands on one of these PCBs, is this still broken?
Perhaps it'd be possible to use the port if I compile from the last commit that still worked with your PR?

Not sure of the risks of flashing a faulty firmware, if it would brick the PCB or anything like that.
