[IC] L7 - 65% Keyboard
« on: Wed, 30 October 2019, 07:19:58 »
L7 - 65% Custom Keyboard

Hello there,
My intention was to create a 65% with a unique layout. We can define it as a cross between a HHKB and CA66.
Initially, during the design phase; I always wanted the plate to be an aesthetic part of the keyboard.
Unfortunately I realized that using the plate in the way I wanted was not possible, or at least possible, but the gasket system would have been useless; so I thought I'd cut the plate to make a border that would be a decoration all around the keyboard. The plate will be positioned on the gasket, both on the top and on the botton and enclosed in the case.

DETAILS
  • Case Angle: 6.0ー
  • Materials: Aluminium & Brass (cerakote polished)
  • Plate: 1.5mm
  • Hotswap PCB with USB-C daughterboard configurable with QMK
  • Full gasket mount (2 layer top and bottom)
  • LED Backlight
  • Pricing: TBD
  • Timeline: TBD - Information will be posted at the earliest
  • Vendors: EU - mykeyboard.eu
  • Manufactured by Salvun
  • Layout options: ANSI only

RENDER

Other rander that I made
ALBUM

**UPDATE 11/06**

I added photos with the technical specifications of the keyboard as some of you asked me for some specs. These days the production of the prototypes should start, I don't have a precise date yet but I will update the IC as soon as I have some news.I am very proud to announce that if the project proceeds in the right direction, I've partnered up with mykeyboard.eu for sales and distribution in the EU.

**UPDATE 01/12**
Prototype in progress, I will post more updates when it is complete.
I advise anyone interested to follow Salvun on IG and activate notifications to his stories to stay updated on this project.

CLARIFICATIONS
The gap between the right arrow and the right column is a consequence of the layout, and is 1.5mm.

DISCLAIMER
Keep in mind this is an interest check. Nothing, including options, pricing, etc, is final until the GB starts.

SHOUTOUTS
My most sincere thanks to all the people who helped me. Starting with my friend Urocci Rudy, for helping me throughout the design, modeling, etc. e11i0t23 for the realization of the PCB. I also thank the whole community, the producers, the venditory etc that have always been available when I needed it.

ABOUT L7

The name does not have a particular story, L is the first letter of my name (Luigi) and since the keyboard has 66 keys I rounded up to 7.The idea of lightning on the top came to me while I was working on the PCB logo, in fact if you look at the picture of the logo on the PCB in the middle between the letter L and the number 7 lightning is formed.

Interesting but not for me (no ISO).

Please think about ISO users, add a split left shift to your "alice style" keyboards

I appreciate it thanks!
If this IC goes well and I will have the chance to make a prototype I think the impact will be higher than the photos.

Looks really good with the line and base. Personally not a huge fan of the combination of heavy rounded corners and sharp "HHKB-esque" layout, bit too jarring for me. Might change my mind though.

As mentioned above I'm not big on the rounded aesthetic (especially with the HHKB blockers), it reminds me of the Space65 which I also really did not like - though many did obviously as per the numbers sold.

Everything else about it is cool though, I like the layout and the little lightning bolt is a really nice logo.

My intent was to create a symmetrical layout, using a soft and modern design without edges.
I hope to change your mind with the photos of the prototype 🙃

I appreciate your opinion, I was aware that not everyone would appreciate the choice of layout and the aesthetics of the keyboard.
I personally think it's stupid to say that I like it, it's obvious; it's just a matter of choices and tastes.

Love the look of this board.

The rounded corners and logo give it a unique, high end aesthetic without making the board appear to somber (for lack of a better word).

Beautiful details and construction.

Definitely in for this one.

The layout is okay, I guess you can use the right menu as FN and Caps Lock for Control and still have two Alt keys and an OS key.

The HHKB blocker style corners look smart. I don't like the lightening bolt and would rather the LEDs span the entire gap.

It is a rare case that I like a logo on a keyboard.

Mounting system looks solid, should be great to type on.

Reminds me a lot of a Space65 with some keys missing.

If you have a reasonable MOQ I don't think you will have any problems getting this one made :-)

Consider that the prototypes have not yet been made, so I am not aware of this information now.
I could make different assumptions based on the number of parts from which it is composed; but it is still early to talk about costs, I will update thhe IC during the next steps.

I really dig the layout - I'm into 65's right now, but really dislike cluttered right side of typical 65 layout. So my daily driver is a CA66 -  I would love to get something similar but with gasket mount.

And a standard question - what about split space? Especially the way CA66 does it (1.25 key on the right side of the split, not in the middle).

I never published this set, I decided to create a set to match my KLAWS, the GAF artisans in KAWS inspired coloring.
I'm waiting for more info about the novelty, they have a lot of details and I don't know if the final result could be good.
If there will be news I will open an IC.

I know this is an IC about the keyboard, but I've seen you post your GMK KLAWS keyset a few times these past couple months ago. And I do hope it makes it to IC and eventually GB phase.
I really hope you can somehow manage to pull off the novelties.
Many of the current ones do look very detailed and I do hope you find a balance between nailing the novelty theme and getting the proper icons designs.

I'm a little sad that this is going to be produced in Belgium, the EU proxy is in Belgium, and there is no ISO support :( I understand your point of view since you're offering a hotswap PCB - really wish you'd also offered a ISO-compatible PCB along the hotswap one ^^ Dope board nonetheless

Might a split backspace be possible in the design?

Looks cool, looks different, looks fresh. The right side gap isn't my taste but it does pull the symmetry together.

One thing I may add from a design standpoint. If the accent "rim" and possibly also gaskets/PCB to have small "alignment pins" on the bottom or top part so everything somehow gets aligned when you're putting it together. Just a small detail and given alignment is crucial in this design that's just something to try out.

Good luck with the IC though and it's a breath of fresh air between all the 65% boards with left-top blocker. Not hating on those, I like'em just copy of a copy of a copy makes it feel stale.

Great design, I'm a fan. The only thing I don't like is the arrow key placement, I'd prefer the arrows offset like the CA66, if only for aesthetic symmetry. I might not join but I'll be recommending it to people looking for 65% boards.

As I said before, I tried to do something different than usual, so as far as I hear that my keyboard is strange, I would say I hit my target.
I wanted to land on GH with this goal, so I am aware that this is not for everyone but only for those who want something different from the usual standards.
Honestly, I'm really satisfied with the work that Salvun is doing and I'm really looking forward to seeing it finished.
The layout is final.
I hope my bad english doesn't make me look too presumptuous.
