Okay here comes the news:

1. I'm happy to announce that we got the partner to do the GB: Caps Unlocked! The GB and shipping will be done by Caps Unlocked > http://caps-unlocked.com/

2. As per vote several days ago, there won't be additional black keys to this set.

3. The kit is locked now and we got the official render from GMK (yay!)



4. We are done with the pricing too, a kit will be priced at $79 on 150 MOQ.

5. If nothing goes wrong, the GB will start next weekend. The GB duration will be announced together with the GB launch.

Background:
1. The idea is sparked when I asked myself: "Was there any GMK blanks?" and currently the only blanks GMK release is set of Ergodox/Planck mods which I find looks awkward when paired with legended alphas.
2. I love Planck, and how tidy it is. But still, no full legend support in the form of GMK. Why not go full blanks then? Planck is identic to weird and various layout which only the owner had because of its small factor.
3. I always love the simplicity of Piet Mondrian's usage of color in his Composition of Red Blue and Yellow series. And coincidentally, the artworks is in some kind of  G R I D

SO HERE IT COMES



Consisting of full blanks in white color plus assortment of Red Blue Yellow accents which you can use to indicate important key-combo or slap them for just purely A E S T H E T I C .

Top row: Darker shades, quite resemble the aging painting.
Bottom row: More POP! I believe this kind of color is what Mondrian used back then.

Yes I know GMK didn't have the perfect color for Mondrian painting. We can use at least raw primary color (confirmed this with friends from fine art major that the best way to interpret Mondrian's color is by using raw primary color) but still, GMK don't have it.

I myself is leaning towards the darker shades (top row) as it depict the painting quite well (in term of aging). Maybe swap the yellow (or not )

Because the black is act as separator on the artwork, I leave the black keys out since there are already "black lines" between keys, yes it's not that thick but if black key added, it will be too much.

I think there are so many 40% boards that you would need so many extra keys with different rows that it wouldnt be cost efficent. Additionally this design idea only works with orthlinear keyboards. As many people have a planck the market should be big enough for this, keyboards like the van etc seem to be pretty rare on the market.

Sadly GMK is very slow at communicating. It take me almost 2 weeks to get the quotation. And I'm not yet to submit the new kit since I still have some questions they're not yet answered. But chance is it can be even cheaper since there's no 2u as much as back then.

Slight update:
– I'm pretty fixed on the halved kit, maybe the price will raise but it will give support for Atomic/Subatomic too by purchasing 3 kits
– Adding accent on R1 to support Preonic Esc
– Adding 1 more R3 so if you want to put WASD there won't be any homing
– Swapping 1 extra R3 to Convex R4 (space button yay!)
– Fixed on using scoop instead of bar for more A E S T H E T I C S
– Fixed on using L9 V1 N6 V4 for the colors
– Matching the mock up to said colors



Will submit the design again to get the more accurate pricing.
For selling, seems like I can't do the GB by myself and I already contacted MD but not yet get answer so I still search another vendor.

Just to be clear, the shipping to me is $680 and there will be import tax too, assuming we fill the quota the tax will be $55 x 150 x 25% $2062. Adding both of them and splitting to each kit: $680 + $2042 = $2,743 / 150 = $18. There will be additional $18 to the price then, and there will be shipping, and because I'm in Indonesia, shipping anywhere except SEA will be ~$20. The most optimal way is if I can use vendor right at the Germany so the shipping and tax will be very minimal.

The $55 is for full kit like in 1st post, not the halved. I'm not yet get the halved price yet.

I want to give clarification regarding the price, sure the quotation said is $55 for the full kit, but after some talks with more experienced member it can't be taken as the selling price per se. There's still some 'invisible' expense, starting with shipping and tax at the very basic, then logistics for shipping, and the most hidden one is 'risk cost' which means when things go south (like, shipping replacement keys) there's still money to use NOT from the organizer's pocket to handle. And of course there's profit margin to be considered if we are going to use a 3rd party vendor.

So after do some math, selling price will be $83 for Mondrian full kit (91 keys) if this is done by me which located in Indonesia.


And I just get the halved quotation from GMK which is $36.5 per kit (52 keys). And after do some more math the selling price will be $59 and that means $118 for usable kit (two of it).

At this point I'm leaning towards the full 91 keys kit compared to the halved 


But if we ever get a vendor who is located nearer to GMK factory (someone in Germany will be the best one) the story will be all different.

The case where I want all four keys to be colored is not covered.

Colored in 1 color? If we want the kit to cover it then by that logic all row must be covered too, and it end up with 4x4 each color (5x5 if we count Preonic). I don't intend to do this that way. Remember that the purpose of colored keys are to 'mark' some keys. But with what you said, maybe it is better if there are no additional R4c white keys? Colored in 1 color? If we want the kit to cover it then by that logic all row must be covered too, and it end up with 4x4 each color (5x5 if we count Preonic). I don't intend to do this that way. Remember that the purpose of colored keys are to 'mark' some keys. But with what you said, maybe it is better if there are no additional R4c white keys? Might as well removing colored 2u convex keys, what do you think?

The main thing is to allow Grid users to be able to create the same patterns as MIT users can. There are many ways to go about that and I'm not sure which is best.

The black on Mondrian's artwork is forming a line, not space like the other colors. I choose to take the black from the gap between keys instead of using black keys because the black will be too bold if come in the size of the other color (and it will be too much keys needed if we want to make a line from black keys).

I'm definitely interested in something like this.

Mainly, I'm just interested in a set of GMK blanks.  I would actually prefer some more interesting colours, but anything that's made directly for planck style boards is a good start.

convex keys for R4 would be nice too.  I usually resort to flipping the middle 6 (thumb) keys on my grid layout to put them at an angle where the edges don't make my thumbs sore.

Problem is, even if you buy a nice full set of alphas,  usually the bottom row and edges end up as random junk.

the black lines aren't just black lines of same thickness in some of his works.
sometimes they're blocks like the other colors.

Another thing I take note about not including black keys is the price, I want to make this as low as possible. That and the artwork I take for reference is Composition with Red Blue and Yellow, 1930 which most representation of it don't include the black (even the name doesn't suggest it).

But again, poll will do the justice here. I don't mind if it is what people really want (and people don't mind about the price hike, of course).

For some reference, I think we may look at the $70 as the final price which is fair to say a bit high compared to some add-on kit of GMK usually appear on popular set like Carbon or Yuri. But I think it's understandable because we don't have the base kit order here like another set so there's no reason for GMK to put some discount on this. That said, adding the black maybe will add another $10, maybe.

The current proposal is fine with me, FWIW. Seems like trying to satisfy everyone with something like this would lead to a kind of feature creep. Better to stick with how you want to do it and keep price down. I suppose if MOQ wasn't an issue the answer would be to split it into a million tiny kits.

This is actually a great idea. It only that I get fascinated by GMK keycaps feel and I never get to touch JTK, that's why it never cross my mind. But if the worst is to come with this GMK (price is too high), I'll try to do it with JTK. Thank you for the suggestion!

Okay here comes the news:

1. I'm happy to announce that we got the partner to do the GB: Caps Unlocked! The GB and shipping will be done by Caps Unlocked > http://caps-unlocked.com/

2. As per vote several days ago, there won't be additional black keys to this set.

3. The kit is locked now and we got the official render from GMK (yay!)



4. We are done with the pricing too, a kit will be priced at $79 on 150 MOQ.

5. If nothing goes wrong, the GB will start next weekend. The GB duration will be announced together with the GB launch.

I choose scoop for the sake of overall cleanliness of the looks. I want to give both but we already have 5 homing keys here, providing both scoop and bar will make them 10 and most probably raise the price  

What do you guys think?

True, with the amount of homing keys in this set it makes sense to choose only one variant, if you chose bars over scoops that would probably make a different set of people unhappy.
I respect your choice and I'm sure the kit will be successful either way, I wouldn't risk increasing the price tbh.

That way I could have mixed the yellow blanks with GMK Nautilus (since it has a pretty expensive ergodox/planck kit with not many planck keys for use). But I totally understand if you feel that CV fits in with the Mondrian theme better.

Nautilus use N6 on its yellow? Weird, from the render I strongly feel it is leaning to CV as it is a very bright yellow. N6 have slight orange tint on it.

I'm debating the color choice myself, for months lol! Wether I should use the more dusty version of RBY or the bright RBY. After having conversation with some artists, curators, and graphic designers (bring them the color chips too) the RBY represetation of Mondrian is supposed to be the bright one. Because the painting we look now is already aged and the color distorting. When Piet Mondrian paint it he want to have a very 'basic' color on his painting so the more pure the color, the closest it is to the real vision of the painting. V4, CV, and RO2 isn't perfect, I know, but it is the closest ones from the stock in my observation. And having a custom made color is obviously increasing the price which I avoid.

Yeap N6 for Nautilus, it's stated on the IC Thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=85336.0)

Alphas are Pantone 534 C
Alphas legends are TU2
Modifiers are Pantone 533 C
Modifiers legends are GMK N6
Alternate modifiers are GMK N6
Alternate modifiers legends are Pantone 533 C

Renders are never 100% accurate though Nautilus is pretty close IMO. Also GMK's renders are even worse and are quite often a fair bit off in terms of colour compared to the actual product. So always base your decisions off the colour chips, samples and more colour accurate renders.

It *might* be worth doing a more colour accurate keyboard render for the GB if you have the resources, or at least adding colour samples so people know what the actual GMK Mondrian colours would be like.

"Should be" is the key here I was thinking that way too until I receive the quotation then pondering what are another cost involved in a keyset. Believe it or not, we aren't flipped this on 100% margin, you can see my calculation some posts back for how I think a GB should be calculated. Remember, the price we have to pay isn't only for the keys itself, there's shipping, tax, logistics, risk-fee, and obviously profit.

If we can sell this for $20 without any loss for any party I will glady do it. But we all know we can't.
