Hiya fellow keyboard nerds.

Amidst the very kind and much appreciated--but confusingly unceasing--clamor for my Cooler Master / Novatouch TKL cases, I've caved and decided to do yet another round. :D Yes, these housings only fit OEM keyboards that have all be discontinued, but the keyboards that they are designed to house have become somewhat legendary in the community, particularly the Novatouch, so it seems that there is still considerable interest. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm flattered, in any event, that people seem to like the design I've come up with.

The group buy page is up now through July 13.
And you can find the full deets there.

I finally wrapped up round 2.5, and while there were some delays and hiccups with the powder coating shop, I've now switched vendors and seem to have that all mostly ironed out at this point (and am still looking into new providers to supplement). However, as a result of the thorniness and complexity of coordinating the powder finishes, I've reduced the number of colors available in this round significantly—with apologies. I'm happy to report, however, that I am able to add hard anodizing as an option for the first time on this design.

After finally being able to tally up how it much it actually costs me to get these made when all is said and done (particularly with respect to the cost of cosmetic rejects and random fees associated with inspection and transport), I had to nudge the price up just a little bit, but on this round that will also be going towards some nicer packaging which will have a more resilient coating on it than previous rounds.

Given my bafflement at the continued demand, I was thinking of calling this round "OMG 3," but in the end decided to opt for Round 3.1415, or Round Pi.  :-*

Surely, surely—surely?—this will be the last round of these, so please jump in now or forever hold your thocks. Any and all thoughts, questions, and cranky criticisms are welcome below, or by emailing me directly.

Thanks everyone at GH for continuing to be so supportive and awesome. If you're going to KeyCon, come hunt me down and I can show you the sample cases I'll have on hand there!

Haha. Thanks, man. It's definitely getting to be a project to organize all the little logistical details of simultaneous projects, but I kind of enjoy that sort of thing—a pleasant sort of organizational adventure. I've got to say, though, I never anticipated when I did that first experiemental run of these that I'd end up doing four!

Fortunately now, having encountered almost all the obstacles one possibly could, I've learned a lot and, for this design at least, I think I've finally got the process down.

Will probably be in for the Tactical Black, but was wondering if it is even possible to get an ever darker shade of black that is matt?

The anodized colors are decently matte in appearance--certainly not glossy in any case.

Back in r2, I couldn't decide between Space Station White, Tactical Gray, or Galactic Blue, so I just got all three. If r3 offers tan, I just might get a fourth case, even though I don't have a (fourth) NovaTouch to put in it. These cases are that good.

What happened to dark grey ano? The ano black is too dark for my liking.

What happened to dark grey ano? The ano black is too dark for my liking.

It is a rather long story chronicled in previous threads (and in my TopClack interview), but in short: this design isn't well-suited to anodizing colors other than black and silver due to the fact that it has a visible seam around its perimeter. It's nearly impossible for ano shops to match two parts of different volumes in color, so the shades of mating parts were often slightly out of sync, which I found aesthetically un-cool.

I already have the Retro Refrigerator and, although I like the photos of the purple, I am struggling a bit to see it match many keysets.

Still, what the heck, 2 (more) ordered!  Black Ano and Powdercoat Purple

Although if you have any other powder-coating options, I would be all ears!

Love my existing ones - they have represented 100% of my keyboard rotations since I got them!

The fourth picture in this set shows a nice pairing with the purple color. :)

Thanks so much for supporting the project! I wish I could offer more powder options, but I had to slim down the number of colors lots a bit on this round in my continuing effort to try to get better powder coating turnaround times.

Since I'm already waiting on an astropurple norbaforce, I figured it'd get jealous if I got another purple.
Grabbed a retro since I absolutely cannot live without that, it's the signature norbatouch color imo.
Plus I think Troubled Minds would look decent on it too, it and Taro can share it until I figure out what I wanna do with TM endgame.

Not sure if this counts, but I am planning on redesigning/improving the box a bit. My packaging-design skills have greatly improved since I designed that first box so long ago. :) One thing I haven't loved about previous rounds of the box is that it's an uncoated paper. It gives it a really nice sort of arty look, which is why I originally chose to make it that way, but it means that the paper can sometimes absorb oils, which I find a bit annoying (especially since I have those around my packing/assembly table sometimes). The new boxes will have some kind of coating on them—either matte or soft touch.

Today is the last day for the group buy btw.

Glad to be in the the last hurrah. Since you called it round "pi", would you consider having "π" (that is Geekhack's font's fault for looking weird, it is legitimately pi in Greek) subtly machined into the case somewhere? It would really make it a great final touch. Just a thought...

Glad I was able to finally get in on a group buy for the case.
Picked up a Novatouch a few months ago and had just been waiting for the next chance to get myself one of these beauties.

Ended up playing it safe and getting silver. The purple looked amazing, but the price difference ended up being a deciding factor :(

Hey Norbauer, got a Retro Refrigerator from the first round and still loving it.
My (somewhat tangent) question is: I'm planning to do a custom anodization job for another aluminum case of mine (this one), and I would love for it to match the same cyan/green-****ed color as your Retro Refrigerator's.

Do you have a pantone or similar for that color so that I can give to my anodizing shop for reference?

For ex, these are some of the color samples my shop got:

Thanks a lot, and I apologize if this veers off the main topic of this IC.

Unfortunately, it's not based on a Pantone but rather the range of available colors at my original powder coater, so frankly your guess would be as good as mine in terms of how to instruct your anodizer in matching it. However, I will say that anodizing dye on top of oxidized aluminum creates a very different (always slightly gray and metallic) look, so while you might be able to find an anodizing color that complements the RR color well, you'll never really be able to match the color itself. Anodizing doesn't replicate light colors very well due to the inherent darkness/grayness of the underlying aluminum, which always shows through. =\

Oh man, that sucks. In case you end up getting your money back, I over-ordered by a little to account for the inevitable people who missed out, and those are up in my store now if you want to pick one up. It's just a few in each finish, but at the current rate I probably won't run out of the allocated quantities until next week or so.

Affirmative. I'm always happy to do whatever I can. Switching from anodized to powder is always easy right up until the powder units go off to be coated, because the powder coater can actually coat over anodizing. Going the other way isn't so easy sometimes, depending on how many extras I planned and have available. :)

Thank goodness you still had extras up!
Finally got my hands on novatouch and while I find SA profile exquisite on it, the feels of cherry profile leaves a lot to be desired clak clak clak.
Still in love with retro/Taro pairing so I'll retool a masterkeys pro s for that and nab an extra astropurple for nova+TM.
Thank you for planning ahead Ryan!

The Venice Beach pretty much appeared as the group buy stage finished up.

I think some photos of it with Laser appeared and was the motivator to add it. It was definitely the motivator for me to change my order to Venice Beach. :D

Yesterday I got a Novatouch for less than $50. And now I'm tempted to jump in on this round, why are you doing this to me Ryan  :'( :'( :'(

Hot damn how’d you get one so damn cheap

Obviously the previous owner did not know its full value, and it was in a quite sorry state - the plastic case is all scratched up, dirty AF, the guy was a construction engineer so tons of dust and stuff, 2 keys only registered if long-pressed. The only good thing is that it was never opened, all the QC seals and stamps over the screws are in tact. Thus I harvested the sliders for my Norbaforce of course (the top of all the stems have scratches, not sure how, but it's still smooth because only the legs make contact to the housing rails), and put KBDfans ones back in with silence rings and lubed everything. And now it is working perfectly, hence my dilemma of getting or not getting a Norbatouch

I ordered a few extras as part of the group buy and figured I would make those available while the order is being manufactured.

So if someone join this gb, and accidentally match with ready stock case that you have right now, will you ship that case or we have to wait for new production?

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, but the extras I mentioned aren’t in ready stock. They’re just planned extras ordered from the factory as part of the normal GB.

Thought I'd share some Enigma Black from round 2 with Red Samurai caps. This case and caps are two, of the very few, purchases I have 0 regrets making.

Despite acquiring many keyboards, of all shapes and sizes, over the years; when serious typing needs to be done, nothing beats my Norbatouch for comfort and satisfaction. You can take it to the office without looking like you got a toy, and it feels so good to use. The subtle texture of enigma makes, running your fingers over the case, almost an erotic feeling. This is from someone who is mostly a buckling spring person; for serious work, I don't need a racket at 3 am - I need the buttery smooth slide of the topre shafts, the sudden collapse of cup rubber and the subtle harshness from the case's hard metal with it's lacey coating...

202627-0

202629-1

It's really hard to do justice to the rich texture of Enigma Black, it's so much more impressive in RL. (Same for Red Samurai's colours.)

I just got my hands on a Novatouch in mint conditions and are looking into potential upgrades.
I'm not sure if this is the place for questions, if not please let me know where.

1) What's the sound characteristics compared to the stock case?
2) Will I notice any difference while typing or is it just a cosmetic upgrade?
3) Does it add any extra support for the pcb?

Yes, I added it to the back where it's hidden during normal use. I was intending it to be a bit of surprise, so I'll leave the actual implementation to be seen when the cases show up, but I spent a lot of time trying to find a Pi glyph that I particularly liked. I ended up taking one from an existing font and then massaging it a bit in Illustrator myself. :)

The machining is complete, but there are plenty of other steps to getting these ready—and thus plenty of more waiting—left. :)

1. Deeper thock. Just search youtube video on typing sound.
2. Any alu case for any keyboard consider as an improvement because eliminates plastic case rattling/ keystroke feel sharp and make typing sound more audible.
3. This case is design for this cm novatouch thus it perfectly fit. Not sure what you means  :)

Venice Laaaaaaser!

Holy cow this is vibrant! It's hard to capture in my office lighting though (sun light + florescents)

Norbauer, the finish quality on the case is nothing short of stellar! Perfect 10. Bravo!

Perfect match with Laser and MasterKeys Pro S RGB. Using that "laser" effect. As I type, the LED's snap on, then fade to off:

Quick update. Machining is complete on these and they're just now working on finishing. They had a few issues with anodizing on the clear parts and are re-running a few of those, so still a few weeks left on production, I'd guess.

@ryan any further updates?

Same as before, but I do have a more precise timeline now. They expect to have the refinishing complete by the end of November, since they're actually re-making some of the cases from scratch in order to meet my (somewhat rigorous) anodizing cosmetic finish standards. That still leaves plenty of time to ship within my stated time frame, but it's nonetheless behind what I was hoping for (i.e., to ship early). This is why I leave plenty of buffer relative to what the factories originally promise. I don't think I've yet ever had a factory ship machined parts exactly on the originally-promised timeline.

After the manufacturing is complete in November, there are still several downstream steps, so shipping of anodized cases is likely to occur in December at some point and then powder in January (a or a bit later for powder, given the holiday shutdowns).

Hey Ryan, I saw that there were a lot of rejects with glossy powdercoats for the norbaforce GB and that it could potentially affect this GB because it's too expensive to keep it up and is a huge pain.

What's the situation looking like?

Yes, I'm going to talk to the powder shop this week and see if it'll be possible to get the exact same color but with a matte finish. If I decide to make that switch to get better surface finish quality control, I'll send an email to affected folks and ask them if they want to stay with matte Retro, to switch to another finish, or to cancel.

Will this affect Retro Refrigerator only or all glossy powdercoats? Personally, I'm okay with the switch to matte (Astro Purple). I'm just curious, is all. Thanks!

No. Only Retro Refrigerator and Venice Beach. Those two are particularly difficult finishes to apply, apparently, and the gloss exacerbates the problem. The purples all came out perfect in the Norbaforce batch.

Sounds good. Thanks for the quick replies!
Though, it is a shame I won't be able to get a glossy Venice beach in the R2 Force run but a matte version would still be appreciated if you run that color :)

Any update on venice beach and retro color?

I actually spent four hours driving on Monday to visit the powder coating facility out out on the other side of the Bay, and we met for quite a long time sifting through various ways of ensuring the highest possible QC, and they agreed with me that a switch from the glossy Venice and Retro finishes to a more matte version is our best bet to address the coverage and non-uniformity issues I've been seeing on the gloss versions of those colors (and which I have rejected rather than shipping to GB participants.) The result of this is that we're conducting an experiment next week where they'll strip and re-shoot 20 Norbatouch housings with flat Retro that had cosmetic problems in the glossy version of the same finish. If the reject rate is much lower, as they suggest it might be, I'll notify people who ordered those colors and ask them if they're cool switching to matte. If the reject rate is still high, I'll cancel the orders and/or give people the opportunity to switch to a texture finish.

Thanks for all the updates Ryan! I'm really looking forward to my case. Are you making a "behind the scenes" photo album or video to post after? I'm sure we'd all love to see the gritty details.

Would love to see pics of the matte finishes for Venice beach :)

So I read somewhere I can use my Norbauer case (optionally) as a home defense weapon. Is this accurate?

Any updates? Especially on the Venice Beach?

I sent out an email to everyone in the group buy (maybe check your spam filter if you didn't get it). I had to push out the delivery estimate by a month or so due to my rejecting some of the anodized units due to minor cosmetic issues and asking the factory to remake them. All the machining and anodizing are complete and the units are at the third-party inspection firm being checked over thoroughly and assembled. I have been nagging them to get that turned around quickly (so far that process has taken longer than I would have liked or hoped, frankly).

Regarding the powder, I'm also still waiting on the samples back from the powder workshop (their excuse for the delay was being closed for a couple of weeks for the holiday). However, I am operating on the assumption that the switch to matte will have addressed my concerns. Once I have any photos to share, I will. I only got them to sample the matte Retro, but they're otherwise the same and from the same vendor, so one should be indicative of the other.

Thanks for the update. I think I did see that, but it was like 3 weeks ago, so thought I'd see if anything has changed since then.

Looking forward to seeing the results of the change to matte.

Yes! Just got an update, which I'm happy to share. The manufacturer finally satisfactorily replaced the units I wasn't happy with and the cases completed inspection early this week. The cases are arriving to California on 29 January. With the exception of the powder-coated cases (which will probably take about a month to get turned around, since powder coating happens here in Silicon Valley as a secondary finishing process), anodized orders should be shipped out within a week or so of their arrival. They've already been inspected, boxed, and barcoded and should be ready to go right out.

FWIW, I don't anticipate any extras in the anodized finishes, but extras of the powder coated finishes will be available after the group buy orders ship.

I'm just curious, and I apologize if this has been asked before (I couldn't find it) - do you expect to make a Norbatouch case for the R2 realforce keyboards that came out recently?

I believe he's currently working out a way to make the V2 Norbatouch case work with both R1 and R2 RF keyboards.

Indeed, I went over and saw the pallet yesterday at the warehouse but it hadn't been unpacked. They're supposed to have it all broken down and ready for me to do a final inspection pass on today and then they'll start shipping out. Sorry again for how long it has taken. Anodizing delays have become the bane of my creative life. :S

I'm happy to report that some anodized units have already shipped and the remaining ones should be going out early this week. The powder coating company picked up the parts for those finishes last Monday and they're in their production queue.

At the moment, I have a few planned extras up for pre-sale (in powder finishes only), due to ship with the group buy powder orders around the end of next month.

So this is it, my chance to finally buy the Venice Beach. Now I'm not sure I can pull the trigger, it's such a loud color I'll need the perfect caps to go with it. Do you have any idea how close the case colors comes to the magenta in the MAXKEY SA Miami Night set?

I wanted to join the GB, but was very hesitant to pull the trigger, hated myself when the GB period closed.
Happened upon this thread yesterday and ordered one !!!
Had a tough time deciding a color - finally went with the conservative choice of Enigma Grey. The purple looked really nice, but thought the Grey was more versatile with various key sets.
So happy !

We can thank my friend Huey/manofinterests for that one. He requested a Norbatouch one off in it some time ago and then had it on display at the NorCal meetup. It drew so much attention that I thought it might be worth making a few more for anyone else who would want one. :)

All the black anodized units should have shipped, unless placed in a single order along with a powder coated housing. If you haven't gotten a tracking number maybe check your spam folder and still can't find anything shoot me an email over to shop@norbauer.com with your order number and I'll be happy to investigate. All but a few of the Aerospace units have also shipped, and I expect those stragglers to go out today. Powder has begun being applied to all remaining units as I write this.

It's a little hard to say with the lighting, but from what I can tell, the first vid above is anodized gray or black. The second video is enigma black, I think (same texture as Enigma Gray but darker.)

Still waiting for the final report from the applicator. We're now around their promised delivery date, so I'm bugging them regularly. They have now finished the Heavy-6 back plates that were in the same batch but haven't quite yet finished the last few Norbatouch colors (specifically, the more tricky non-texture ones, Venice, Purple, and RR, because some of those had to be re-done, as is usually the case.)

I just sent out an email update to everyone with a pending open order. In short: Venice Beach and Retro Refrigerator finishes continue to be very tricky to apply, even in their new matte forms, causing several to need to be re-coated after a first attempt didn't pass my (admittedly fairly picky) QC standards. Since the whole order is batched together, this has prevented delivery of all the powder-coated parts. The workshop has worked out a new process that seems to be yielding consistently good results on those finishes and now it's just a matter of working their way through the backlog to close out the order. I expect this will probably take another couple of weeks. I'll keep after them. :)

I got my powder coated enigma grey today, and oh boy, I’m blown away !!!
The texture is very nice and uniform, a very unique look!

Also a nice surprise on the back makes this board very very special...

Not sure if the other rounds had this on the back, but at least it came to me as a pleasant surprise!!!

That's very cool. I don't think that was any previous rounds

From GB page:

These cases are custom designed to fit only the following Cooler Master TKL models:

Novatouch TKL
Rapid-i ("small" model)
MasterKeys Pro S ("small"/"80%" layout)

From what I unserstand, all powder coated cases should have started shipping, since they were done together as a single batch with the powder coating facility.
The email from Norbauer to the buyers, I think said the same thing...

Just got an update saying my Venice Beach case is in hand and should be sorted in the next 1-2 weeks.

Got time to put my board into the case.
Looks amazing, glad I decided to change to this colour.
219982-0
219984-1

The case is nearly perfect, like 9-9.5/10.
There is a small dent just above the scroll lock key and the right(in picture) cone foot is not fully coated so looks dull compared to the other one.
