Title: Nightcaps: keps
Post by: eat_the_food on Sat, 06 February 2016, 16:03:10
Hi folks, My name is Eat_the_food and I'm in love with this hobby.

Though I've always been a fan of quality input devices. I'd say that I didn't really get into keyboards with real seriousness until around September/November of last year. About that time there were quite a few exciting artisan raffles happening so I decided to join a few. Didn't win anything. Decided to enter a few more over the next several weeks. No luck. Gave it another chance right around Xmas/new years and still nothing. -sadface-

Hmm.. Maybe I should try making some caps instead...

So I spent a few days intensively researching what I could find on resin casting. Binge thread, Booper thread, Resinaddicts forum, etc, etc, etc. Looked fun and not overly intimidating to get into so I decided to give it a shot. Silicone, resin, colors check. Vacuum chamber, pump check. Pressure pot check. Let's do it.

After a few tries the straight cast blanks started turning out well.

A few days and a million tries later, bubbles in the casts were mostly eliminated (pressurepot is your friend). Thicker R4 blanks were starting to come out well too.

KeyKollectiv are one of my favorite maker teams and I've always been fascinated by thier design for Furt. Embedding things into resin looks awesome so gave it a try with the Gelatinous Cube cap. Once I figured out the proper timing for the multiple layers of resin, they coming out as intended.

****ups jar. Mostly contain caps that were the victim of Bubble-boy but occasionally there's a cap that has a paintbrush hair or some other intended particulate encapsulated into it.

Build up dat inventory and maybe do a sale?

Well, that's my personal cap making journey in pics for the month of January 2016. Had a ton of fun making these. As a closing note, since I mostly make these at night and also often enjoy a drink before bed I've decided to title my efforts Nightcaps. I hope you like it!

Is your location correct?  To have done all this only at night I'd have guessed you lived in Iceland where "night" lasted for 17-19.5 hours in January.  Guess you don't sleep much :))

Good work!

Lol, I actually love to sleep - it's one of my favorite activities! I do have a couple of factors in my favor though. First, I live in a studio / shop / warehouse space. Second, my professional work is very flexible and involves a lot of downtime. All that contributes to ample time for hobbies :)

Maybe! Just need to figure out how to do a raffle thing first :/

I don't know if this is the most efficient way, but the way that i was thinking was using a list generator and entering everyone's username. The winners would be the first names in order until you don't have any more caps.

I think it would be different if people could win more than one keycap. You would probably have to refresh the list every time and the first person would win a cap each time. Once somebody wins their max number of keycaps, just take their name out of the list.

Also, any plans for alps amd buckling spring caps?

Are the four holes around each base the drainage holes? This seems like a really efficient way to mold instead of having one gigantic block of silicone for one keycap.

Did you cure the silicone in a pressure pot as well? Or just pour method?

Correct, those four holes around each cap are vents that help eliminate larger bubbles. Def nice to be able to do multiples at once - allows for faster experiments on colors and technique. Additionally, I don't feel so bad if one of them gets F***ed up because I have four more good ones :)

Each pour is both de-gassed in a vacuum chamber and pressure cast @ 40psi.

You've been incredibly helpful, thank you. Last question...how are you actually getting the resin in the mold? Do the small holes play a role? Some type of injection? Your molds are different (in a good way) from a lot of other molds I've seen, so I'm just trying to wrap my head around it. Thanks again!

No not injection; De-gassed resin is poured into the negative mold (the side w/shells) Basically fill up each cavity fully.

Then, using a pipette, I coat the "stem" side of the mold to make sure there aren't any bubbles trapped in the stem area.

Once complete, I "sandwich" the two sides together - stem side w/vent holes on top. This allows excess resin to vent out of the holes surrounding each cap. Also note that the some of the excess resin stays in the holes / tunnels as serves as a reservoir for when the mold gets put under pressure. Existing air bubbles shrink under pressure and the subsequent space need to be back filled with extra resin or you'll get larger empty cavities.

That's probably a pretty poor explanation but should give you the working concepts. Also check out Booper's tutorial - really great walkthrough of the process with visuals:

This is amazing. Thank you. I've been doing a lot of research on the methods used by the beginning artisans of GH, and I'm pretty sure this "smash" method (paired with a clean master design and silicone mold) is producing some of the best work I've seen for getting started in the craft.

You're awesome for linking booper's thread. Thanks again!  :thumb:

I've been looking to play with doubleshots, but I can't really find any concrete information of the process.

From what I've gathered, you carefully put the resin into the parts that you want coloured differently, such as the eye holes or mouth of a character, then pour the main colours once it's hardened, but still relatively soft so that it bonds?

Can't wait to see more of your work as it progresses!

Yup, you got it. One thing that's helpful is to get a read on the tack time of the resin being used. Low-viscosity resins are more difficult to get to stay in plane and not bleed to other areas but thickens considerably the longer you wait - making it easier to stay where it is.

My personal pref is the lower the viscosity, the better. I like very long work-times and thin, pour-able resin.

Just know that I've only been doing this for a little over a month now so my knowledge is very limited! Your own research will likely yield more precise answers :)

This one is cX5 soft. I used to use epoxy clay but found the 2-4 hours of work time somewhat limiting. cX5 is great once you get past / habituate to the spicerack smell.

So were your shells and castles made with epoxy clay? If so that's quite impressive what you were able to do in the allotted 2-4 hours.

The general shaping of the shells was in the 2-4 hr timeframe but most of the detailing (which there isn't much of) was done post cure with lots of filing.

Three! Well, in FFX, at least. Can't remember the other games.
But level high enough and even three Bombs blowing up didn't do much.

I recognized those guys right away--FFX is my favorite game of all time!

I'm of the school of thought that no one likes thin wobbly caps! Here's a WIP on thick back caps for all the rows along with first iteration of the Nightcaps makers mark.

Also, we need moar Plumkin in our lives.

I remember there being such hate for the game for some reason.
I know people didn't enjoy the character group, but it invited alot of cool concepts and semi turn-based strategy.
I always loved it.

Digressing here, but I don't care!
The first time I played it, it just didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game to me. FFX was the last FF game I played before XII (never played XI), and the former became my favorite game ever, so XII had a lot of high expectations for me. It was getting rave reviews, so I was hyped.
I didn't think the new battle system would bother me, but it did. I couldn't take my turns like I was accustomed, and the summons were a HUGE disappointment, and still are to me.
The leveling system is pretty cool, but the story wasn't the best. Halfway through the game I still didn't know the plotline. That said, the second time I did get it and liked it more. I'm still waiting to see if we're getting the International Version in the west.

I even have the custom firmware in a PS2 memory card, but am waiting to get an HDD to put in the back of the PS2 so I can just play off the hard disk instead of playing off the actual disc.
Custom ISO hacks/translations and virtually no loading times!

Yup! All you need is a memory card with Free McBoot, the expansion bay, and a compatible HDD. Oh, and a cable to connect the HDD to your computer to upload the ISOs.
Much better than discs as you don't have to rely on the lens reader; you can play any imports/hacks/translations, and it's all sped up since it's reading off the hard disk instead of the optical disc. Also great if you have a busted or dying lens.  :thumb:

Anyway, I'll stop derailing.  :p

What a fun design! Has a lot in common with your fugu. But those teeth look like a big casting challenge. I'm guessing you'd need a really super flexible mold.

Wouldn't he potentially lose the teeth on the master, but the casts should be solid enough to pop out?

Yes, but their position and shape makes me wonder if they will damage the mold when removed. Cured resin point tips can be sharp. You'd get one of the caps out of the mold just fine, but there's a good chance the next one would have deformed teeth if the first one gouged the mold rubber on the way out.

First two came out clean. For most of my keys I use a very rigid / dimensionally stable silicone with the highest possible tear strength - this makes the molds very difficult to damage in any significant way. Additionally, I tend to pull the cast resin towards the front end of the de-mold window hence they are very soft when they come out. Could definitely see it being as issue with the softer silicons though.

Do you lose any of the sharpness when pulling the cast out soft etf? any dulling? or is it not THAT soft?

Out of curiosity, what silicone do you commonly use for mold making? I've seen lots of folks use Smooth-on products with good results. I just couldn't' get past their hilariously bad website long enough to figure out what i needed to order when I first got started ;p

In my limited experience, I've found that Alumilite Plat 40 or Plat 55 work best for long-life molds. The more stretchy rubbers are great for designs with undercuts but can be fragile like you indicated.

Oomoo 30 from smooth on is the most readily available option to me. And pretty cheap when you get it at discount from ****blick.com. It's a 30A silicone. I haven't had serious longevity problems with it except for ones caused by my own mistakes.

Finding that I'm leaning more towards opaque colorways recently. When I was starting out I definitely favored translucents over solids. Still like them but it takes a specific kind of sculpt to pull it off in a way that makes it sing, KeyKollectiv and many Binge designs are great examples that come to mind.

So I made my first molds last night, using an r4 mx blank,
The top of the cap came out fine, but when I did my stem side of the mold, the stem didn't completely form to its full length.

It didn't reach the height it should have.   I think I put way too much petroleum inside the stem, and that limited the silicone from fully filling it.

Do you have any advice for making perfect stem molds?

1) Stop using petroleum jelly - too easy to get overfill gaps and details, plus its inconsistent in application. Better off with a spray release.
2) If you're not pressure curing/casting then consider using a toothpick or something else small to apply small amounts of silicone to the inside of the stem on the master. Easy to trap bubbles in there causing exactly what you talked about.
3) If not degassing / pressure casting be patient and careful not to introduce bubbles into the sil as you are mixing. Pour in a very thin stream to burst existing bubbles as you fill the mold.
4) Happy to answer any more q's you may have but let's move it to the Making Stuff Together thread :)

Good to know about the spray.

I would love to get a pressure pot, but I have to wait on that for a while.

Ill have to give it another go with the stem side tonight.
I did a very thin and high pour, and seemed to go fine without any bubbles in the molds.
Me limiting the fill of the stem from the overdose of petroleum was the only problem for now I think.
Im only doing the r4 mx and topre blanks first so that i'll have both negatives to place stemless sculpted caps on in the future.

Sorry about posting in the sale thread, and for this long quote-post.
Brought over convo from sale thread.

So although the mold was useless as far as making stemmed caps, I had it there and was itching to have some plastic.
I poured in my evenly mixed smooth-on 320, let it sit for like 20 minutes and it was very brittle and bendable.
  :p
Does the de-mold time of 10mins really mean an hour? or am I doing it wrong?

De-mold time and cure-time are two separate things. De-mold time window is just an indication of the resin being cohesive enough to exit the mold on one piece. It will be super gummy at the early part of the window - a little less gummy towards the end. Once that part "cures" it'll be hard so long as you portioned and mixed the resin properly.

Finding that I'm leaning more towards opaque colorways recently. When I was starting out I definitely favored translucents over solids. Still like them but it takes a specific kind of sculpt to pull it off in a way that makes it sing, KeyKollectiv and many Binge designs are great examples that come to mind.

Can I start getting hype now...?
And opaque colors bring out the details better than translucent. I think you dont need to worry about sales being closely implemented, with these kind of caps, youll do great if not better. Just think of holloween and christmas themed sales  :thumb:

So schedule it so i can get a fugu already

Thanks Krytone! Just need to wait on bags/packaging stuff at this point so I think the 15th of March will be the date for now :)

So my first cap on the new mold came out and I'm somewhat happy with it. Course I've got a problem with the stem but only somewhat usable, but all in all it came out pretty good. I was expecting some giant bubbles in it, but as far as I can tell there's only one section that has really tiny bubbles that pooled on the surface

A good friend of mine stopped by the studio to check out what I've been working on the last month or so. He was pretty excited to see the keycap micro-sculptures since he has a design background. Lent him some tools and pushed him to give sculpting a try and this is what we came back with after a couple of days:

Ridiculous!

I made a mold for him and cast it, here's the result:

We need more giant artisans. Probably would work well with SA-profile caps.

We also need more photos of your friend's cap. It looks really cool.

Those black/white/red

Please say those will be available soon, especially those blanks! Blanks are so under rated, I implore you to reconsider your aversion to them. They always have such a great minimalist, less-is-more feel. And they look so damn classy on keyboards.

EDIT: What's a gold bag? Sounds very Wonka.

waait, these aren't a new raffle? oh man... those koy caps are awesome

No, I think they're part of the gold bag mystery.

Love the colorway; gives it a nice Honeywell look.

Here you go (see below)! Unfortunately it doesn't look like they'll be available in a sale :/

So here's the deal. If you won the raffle, you'll get a box in the mail. Within the box, the item(s) in your order will be in a sealed BLACK bag or bags. Random boxes will also contain a GOLD sealed bag. If you were lucky enough to win a set you'll also get one.

GOLD bags contain anything from colorful blanks to limited colorways to one-off caps. Just my way to say thanks for the support  ;)

He later stated that it's one gold bag per box but not all gold bags contain one cap. I hope that helps :)

Nope - just one tone all the way through. It's a pretty dark shade though so will seem more solid without backlighting.

FYI - Next sale will be Fugu blind box and will be ALL GOLD BAGS. 10-12 new colorways and one super-rare colorway. No one will know which you'll get before hand. This will be an MX only sale.

Shooting for 2 weeks from now.... keep you posted as new info and dates materialize.

The warehouse/loft is pretty nice but is prone to heating/cooling issues during peak winter / summer.

Loving the early RD.  Looks sharp with the modern mufflers at a nice aggressive angle.  I had a 77' RD400 in Crystal Blue and miss it all the time.  I restored it from the frame up, and ended up selling it to one of my best friends so that it wouldn't go too far.

I think a lot of it is practice, too. Just like anything else, the more experience you have the more things you intuitively know to do - so you mix your parts more efficiently, you remember to start and stop your timer every time, and you have a better feel for what will work and what won't.

Getting the science down pat definitely helps though.
