Is your location correct? To have done all this only at night I'd have guessed you lived in Iceland where "night" lasted for 17-19.5 hours in January. Guess you don't sleep much :))
Good work!
Much respect man, you dove into the deep end with the right attitude and knew what to expect. I would love to chat sometime :)
Those are some beautiful caps. You did an awesome job, maybe a sale in the future?
Good to see all your work in one place. You're going with "Nightcaps" for your name? It's catchy. I like it. :thumb:
Going to echo Binge's sentiment that you approached the craft with a great mindset. Very impressive work and I can't wait to see what you have in store. Feel free to PM me anytime to talk shop :). Kudos from kudos!

Perhaps in the future. Just about all the caps are Topre for now (just recently made base molds for MX stems). Been meaning to pick up an alps board anyway :)
| huge cube one.
Lol, "huge" :)the massiveness would be accurate if it's based off of the eq cube :p
It was a teeny bit on the massive side ;p I've made some lower profile ones since then but just don't have that same feeling of cubeness unfortunately.

I was just identifying tactile as having a bump, yet no click.

Are the four holes around each base the drainage holes? This seems like a really efficient way to mold instead of having one gigantic block of silicone for one keycap.
Did you cure the silicone in a pressure pot as well? Or just pour method?
how are you actually getting the resin in the mold? Do the small holes play a role? Some type of injection? Your molds are different (in a good way) from a lot of other molds I've seen, so I'm just trying to wrap my head around it. Thanks again!

No not injection; De-gassed resin is poured into the negative mold (the side w/shells) Basically fill up each cavity fully.
Then, using a pipette, I coat the "stem" side of the mold to make sure there aren't any bubbles trapped in the stem area.
Once complete, I "sandwich" the two sides together - stem side w/vent holes on top. This allows excess resin to vent out of the holes surrounding each cap. Also note that the some of the excess resin stays in the holes / tunnels as serves as a reservoir for when the mold gets put under pressure. Existing air bubbles shrink under pressure and the subsequent space need to be back filled with extra resin or you'll get larger empty cavities.
That's probably a pretty poor explanation but should give you the working concepts. Also check out Booper's tutorial - really great walkthrough of the process with visuals:

I've been looking to play with doubleshots, but I can't really find any concrete information of the process.
From what I've gathered, you carefully put the resin into the parts that you want coloured differently, such as the eye holes or mouth of a character, then pour the main colours once it's hardened, but still relatively soft so that it bonds?

Yup, you got it. One thing that's helpful is to get a read on the tack time of the resin being used. Low-viscosity resins are more difficult to get to stay in plane and not bleed to other areas but thickens considerably the longer you wait - making it easier to stay where it is.
My personal pref is the lower the viscosity, the better. I like very long work-times and thin, pour-able resin.

This one is cX5 soft. I used to use epoxy clay but found the 2-4 hours of work time somewhat limiting. cX5 is great once you get past / habituate to the spicerack smell.

Wouldn't he potentially lose the teeth on the master, but the casts should be solid enough to pop out?

Yes, but their position and shape makes me wonder if they will damage the mold when removed. Cured resin point tips can be sharp. You'd get one of the caps out of the mold just fine, but there's a good chance the next one would have deformed teeth if the first one gouged the mold rubber on the way out.

First two came out clean. For most of my keys I use a very rigid / dimensionally stable silicone with the highest possible tear strength - this makes the molds very difficult to damage in any significant way. Additionally, I tend to pull the cast resin towards the front end of the de-mold window hence they are very soft when they come out. Could definitely see it being as issue with the softer silicons though.

Out of curiosity, what silicone do you commonly use for mold making? I've seen lots of folks use Smooth-on products with good results. I just couldn't' get past their hilariously bad website long enough to figure out what i needed to order when I first got started ;p
In my limited experience, I've found that Alumilite Plat 40 or Plat 55 work best for long-life molds. The more stretchy rubbers are great for designs with undercuts but can be fragile like you indicated.

Finding that I'm leaning more towards opaque colorways recently. When I was starting out I definitely favored translucents over solids. Still like them but it takes a specific kind of sculpt to pull it off in a way that makes it sing, KeyKollectiv and many Binge designs are great examples that come to mind.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/Wium6uS.jpg)

Any idea on when you'll have a general sale?
Gorgeous, my friend. Not fond of the orange one per say (a bit too loud), but the other 3 = YES!!!

I'm sure many folks are tapped out or close to it from all the recent sales so I'm thinking Mid-March drop would be best.

And opaque colors bring out the details better than translucent. I think you dont need to worry about sales being closely implemented, with these kind of caps, youll do great if not better. Just think of holloween and christmas themed sales :thumb:
So schedule it so i can get a fugu already

Thanks Krytone! Just need to wait on bags/packaging stuff at this point so I think the 15th of March will be the date for now :)

So I made my first molds last night, using an r4 mx blank,
The top of the cap came out fine, but when I did my stem side of the mold, the stem didn't completely form to its full length.
It didn't reach the height it should have. I think I put way too much petroleum inside the stem, and that limited the silicone from fully filling it.
Do you have any advice for making perfect stem molds?
1) Stop using petroleum jelly - too easy to get overfill gaps and details, plus its inconsistent in application. Better off with a spray release.
2) If you're not pressure curing/casting then consider using a toothpick or something else small to apply small amounts of silicone to the inside of the stem on the master. Easy to trap bubbles in there causing exactly what you talked about.
3) If not degassing / pressure casting be patient and careful not to introduce bubbles into the sil as you are mixing. Pour in a very thin stream to burst existing bubbles as you fill the mold.
4) Happy to answer any more q's you may have but let's move it to the Making Stuff Together thread :)

Good to know about the spray.
I would love to get a pressure pot, but I have to wait on that for a while.
Ill have to give it another go with the stem side tonight.
I did a very thin and high pour, and seemed to go fine without any bubbles in the molds.
Me limiting the fill of the stem from the overdose of petroleum was the only problem for now I think.
Im only doing the r4 mx and topre blanks first so that i'll have both negatives to place stemless sculpted caps on in the future.
Sorry about posting in the sale thread, and for this long quote-post.
Brought over convo from sale thread.
So although the mold was useless as far as making stemmed caps, I had it there and was itching to have some plastic.
I poured in my evenly mixed smooth-on 320, let it sit for like 20 minutes and it was very brittle and bendable.
:p
Does the de-mold time of 10mins really mean an hour? or am I doing it wrong?

A good friend of mine stopped by the studio to check out what I've been working on the last month or so. He was pretty excited to see the keycap micro-sculptures since he has a design background. Lent him some tools and pushed him to give sculpting a try and this is what we came back with after a couple of days:Ow **** where do you live? Or a collaboration between the two, similar to KK and Boopers going right now. Maybe even like a versus kind of sale, similar to the JTK Vs. Ctrl Alt keyset sale that ran awhile ago, but with artisans!

waait, these aren't a new raffle? oh man... those koy caps are awesome
Those black/white/red
Please say those will be available soon, especially those blanks! Blanks are so under rated, I implore you to reconsider your aversion to them. They always have such a great minimalist, less-is-more feel. And they look so damn classy on keyboards.
EDIT: What's a gold bag? Sounds very Wonka.
So here's the deal. If you won the raffle, you'll get a box in the mail. Within the box, the item(s) in your order will be in a sealed BLACK bag or bags. Random boxes will also contain a GOLD sealed bag. If you were lucky enough to win a set you'll also get one.
GOLD bags contain anything from colorful blanks to limited colorways to one-off caps. Just my way to say thanks for the support ;)

Just curious, how do you generally make a mold symmetrical with something as finicky as sculpting? Is it an intensive process?

Same here, I really like seeing the process behind the products a la How It's Made.
As someone who is currently getting into making artisan caps, I would love to see some of the more updated procedures ETF uses. Some of the stuff he does blows me away. He must have the timing of the different resins down to a perfect science.

Maybe he doesn't want to give away his secrets

He must have the timing of the different resins down to a perfect science.I think a lot of it is practice, too. Just like anything else, the more experience you have the more things you intuitively know to do - so you mix your parts more efficiently, you remember to start and stop your timer every time, and you have a better feel for what will work and what won't.
