Das Keyboard III - pre-orders save $30!
« on: Tue, 10 June 2008, 03:04:38 »
I just placed an order for a Das Keyboard III.  There are now two models: the Ultimate and the Professional.  The only difference between them is that the Professional has labels on the keys.  The price is $129, but there's a limited-time pre-order special price of $99.

Blurbage from http://www.daskeyboard.com:
Quote

Das Keyboard, 104 key-layout, sports best-in-class, German-engineered, mechanical, gold-plated key switches that provide great tactile and audio feedback. It includes a high-speed USB 2.0 dock; n-key rollover function and a 6.6 ft USB cable. Compatible with Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX.

I ordered the Professional model.  I know that blows my geek cred, but sometimes I'm not that accurate with symbol keys that are part of my passwords, and sometimes I've even been known to type while I'm eating a sandwich, which means hunt-and-peck.

Enjoy!

Good information, davo! Though I'd pass this time and wait 'til they release a space saver model, I'm sure many geeks would want to buy it.

Now if only it wasn't so ugly (and didn't have a numpad).

I thought the USB cable was supposed to be removable?  I don't see any mention of that on the site.

Am I missing something?

Won't this keyboard be as loud as hell?  I found a place where I could get a black Cherry keyboard with blue switches for a reasonable price but i'm wondering whether or not it would be better to stick to looking for a keyboard with browns.  Procrastinating too much on this >_<.

EDIT: Dang, their Euro layout doesn't come with normal keys.

I don't find blue cherries to be all that loud.  Certainly not on the scale of the Model M's.  Definitely audible though.

A thread with soundclips would be cool, with the recordings made from roughly a couple of feet away.  I've heard youtube clips of various clicky keyboards and while that solid, positive sound is quite nice for people like us, it's not exactly bird-song for your flatmates/significant-other(s*)/co-workers.

I'm getting a blue cherry Scorpius M10 later this week, and a brown cherry Filco (hopefully somewhere next week from Japan).

I'll let you guys know - I'll try to find something to record semi-decent audio with...

Nah... in that price range it'd rather spend a bit more and get a brand new one. I'm sure you'll sell it soon enough though ;)

I think he's only had it about a week, so it'd still be pretty new.  Although having said that, there's nothing like that fresh hardware smell when you first tear open the bag and get a face full of polluted factory air.  Mmmmm, satisfying.

JAPANESE factory air!  Who could blame  you...

Thread hijack:  You know, not to pout or anything, but I would have preferred to buy it from a domestic seller like myself.  If it's DOA, you can just get your money back from PayPal.  If you bought it from japan, then, well,  you'd have to 1) pay for the return shipping 2) cross your fingers that they refunded you, and 3) pay the incoming wire transfer fee if they ended up making good.

...not to pout or anything ;)

Hmm sounds like you need better flatmates/significant-other(s*)/co-workers.

I currently have 3 model Ms  because my ex got the 4th in the break-up ... I don't know which I miss more.

REVIEWED!!!

I might have to order one of these for Blue Cherry Bliss (TM) ;)

AFAIK, the Das line and the Scorpius M10 (see my less than fortunate review here) are the only confirmed boards available right now with blue cherries right?

Those are the only two that can be bought new in the US that I know about.  I'd certainly love to be proven wrong though (haven't done much new research lately).

I contacted a large German vendor a couple of weeks back, to see if they knew if any of the (large amount) of Cherry keyboards they carry had blue or brown switches.

They had no clue, nor did Cherry provide them with any information regarding that matter.

The Cherry G80-3000LSCEU is listed as clicky so it should have the blue switches. G80-3000LSCEU-0 is gray, G80-3000LSCEU-2 is black.

All the US resellers I looked at today have the "LPC" variant.  I'm guessing that's the linear, black cherry keyswitches (but I don't know for sure)

**EDIT**

Spoke too soon.  Here it is available from a US reseller with the blue cherry keyswitches.  And it's black to boot.

Check it

$75.26 - not bad considering the price of the Das.

Here's the link to the german product sheet:

http://www.cherry.de/deutsch/dokumente/d_Datenblatt_G80-3000_Combo_V07.pdf

LPC is linear.

Some black models are available but not listed.

I wonder what the RC means in G80-3000LSCRC-2. That's the country code. Republic of China? If you want to buy you should check that.

Hmmm... my family lives in the Netherlands, so shipping would not be much... maybe I'll get my sister to bring me one over when she comes in august.

First I'll have to wait to see if I get refunded or a replacement for my non-working blue cherry M10...

Who did you buy your Scorpius from?

If you aren't treated fairly, we'll have to make sure and let everyone here know to avoid them.

From ergogeek. I did it through their ebay page though, not directly from their site... I figured it would give me better protection, even if it's just the feedback system.

Thanks, for now I have no reason to be suspicious. They responded fast (on a workday) to me asking them to confirm if it had blue cherries, and they shipped the same day. Packaging was good (theirs, not the packaging iOne uses for their keyboards) and fast.

I wasn't expecting a reply before monday anyways. I'll keep you guys posted, but yeah, at that price it would have been probably the best source for blue cherries in the US.

If I can get a refund and am still in time, I will probably get the Das III for $99 with the extra USB ports the M10 doesn't have. I'm really liking the feel of these switches.
