I will take persons in order of their post. If you have questions please post in the other thread to keep this one as clean as possible. I also will not be back on till in the morning at which time I will send out payment details to the interested individuals.
I have 9 Model M Space Saving Keyboards(SSK) in working order.
$150.00 USD via Paypal includes shipping to the 48 continental US States. If you are outside that you will have shipping fees added and we can work that out. I don't have the fees for everywhere and will have to do that one by one.

The top part of the keys have been removed and cleaned and put back. The keyboards have been wiped down with a damp microfiber cloth. These have all been tested and working but are heavily used. They have not been opened by me and still all need a lot of cleaning. The cables are stretched out some as would be expected. The cables have not been cleaned.
This will be a first come first serve with trickle down, meaning if someone backs out it goes to the next eligible candidate. The prices are well below both the average and mean selling points for two reasons. I have a good deal of these I just cannot find cables at this time, if I do those will be made available in another post. Also as a thank you to everyone on GeekHack that has helped me or answered questions for me or really anyone. That is the reason these are only available to person who were registered users before my original post.

I actually have more of these but I cannot in good conscious sell them till I find the cables and test them. When/If I do find them I will update the post with a new timestamp photo so if you want to continue the overflow list I am ok with that as long as we are not breaking the rules and the moderators are ok with it. If not I will create a new posting but that seems counter productive to me but will follow whatever rules I am asked to follow.

I have packing slips made and these will all get bubble wrapped and packaged tonight and will ship on Friday if you have paid already or pay before Friday morning.
Edit 5:
1-2, 4-10 should all have tracking information. Please let me know if there are any issues and I will do my best to take care of them. If any packages appear damaged take photos and contact me BEFORE opening as it makes the process of replacement much quicker. They were all wrapped in a decent amount of bubble wrap so there should be no issues but let me know if there is.
Edit 6:
If you want a unit shipped ASAP w/o a cable let me know I will mark you as such. When the cables are located you can opt to pay shipping for the cable(see my post below in the thread for reasonings). If you choose you can source your own cable from some place like EBay or Unicomp (http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/1395110)[Thanks to _rubik for point out the cables on Unicomp]. This does not affect the pricing and applies to SSK and FSK that require an SDL cable.
Edit 7:
If you are in the list and want to wait for a cable a unit WILL be held for you. This means that even if someone opts to get one shipped sooner w/o a cable they wont supersede anyone in the list. I hope that was obvious but I want to state it to be perfectly clear. I will have a count of how many SSK and FSK I have and how many Blue/White label of each on Wednesday. I will make updates above but white label are far more rare and those will have a price tag of $175USD not $150USD. After Thanksgiving I will open the list to anyone who wants a second board if there are still some left and it looks like there will be.
We are about 1/4 of the way through the largest storage location and now that we have a location to move stuff to and sort stuff it's going to go a lot quicker in looking for the cables.

First, happy Thanksgiving to those of you who partake. Next I've updated the above list, let me know of any corrections, there were a lot of changes so if I didn't miss something I'd be surprised. Then if you are outside the US, I suggest looking for a remailer. Others have had good success and it's far cheaper as mailing to other countries is currently running more than 80 bux often more. If anyone has any other suggestions or wants to suggest a specific remailer that would greatly help many fellow clackers.

I have only just registered and seen your post while browsing the classifieds looking for a new keyboard. The das keyboard I bought used at the begin of my graduate studies has just died and I am looking for a replacement. If you still have a spare SSK and would consider selling to a newbie, you'd make me quite happy. I'm not looking to resell, I just really need a new keyboard for my job, and an Ansi layout SSK is near impossible to find in Europe.
Follow both this post and the other. Currently the 9 SSK are spoken for. I hope to find more cables soon and the date requirement only allows users who were members before that date to jump ahead of you. That said I will add you to the overflow for now.

There are still PLENTY of these boards so I imagine everyone who wants one will get one even if they wait. There have just been several people ask about getting them w/o cables to get them sooner so I'm making this an option. Many of those don't need or want the cable.
Also I want you to all know I will be out of town from Nov11 - Nov20. I will be able to answer questions but will not be able to ship anything during that time.

Edit: are these the same cables used in the full sized Model Ms? If so, you can buy new ones from Unicomp. I'm sure this'll help the process along. If they are correct, I would 100% take one without the cable. Could someone who has received theirs or know about SSKs verify?

Considered myself interested...getting all people with their cables and ship all at the same time would probably be ideal for you. That would save you trip to the shipping center!

The detachable ps2 cable is what you would need. I just don't like selling incomplete products even though they are used. It just sits uneasy on my conscious I guess. I aim to make sure that everyone gets a working unit as complete as I can possible provide. So I'm doing my best to do that but I also understand that there are people who are OK with a unit and buying a cable separate thus my decision to go ahead and start letting them go without a cable. I'll update the original post with the link here shortly, my dog is demanding I feed him before I post another message.

Sounds perfect then. I would totally take one off your hands and save you the trouble of searching around for a cable. That being said, no rush. Model Ms without cables is no big deal. Personally, after being in the hobby for a few years, I have at least 3 more cables than I do Model Ms at this point.

Oh boy, please put me down for one as well! I've been looking for one for a long time (long time lurker. I hope my join date was before the original thread)...

No, it just meant that older members got first shot but now I'm pretty sure there are enough to go around that it wont matter.

So I expect most will work but I also have to look at their condition after I wipe off the dust and dirt. I haven't updated the topic title yet as I've not tested them and not found cables. I will as I expect most if not all will work.

Orihalcon's cables are pricey but they are really nice. Besides being clean and fresh, they are native USB and will not require any additional adapters or such in the future, when PS/2 goes away completely.
I would recommend those to anybody not on a tight budget, they are much prettier and generally future-proof.

Yep, part of why I post the list so you all can help keep me accurate and honest. It's a lot more work that it looks like to keep it all straight. I have it all in a spread sheet now though.

I did talk with orihalcon about the cables and he has made a really good offer. If I have 20 of you wanting one I can get them for 32.50 and if there are 30 of you they will be 30.00. This would just be added to the price of the keyboard on your invoice. I'm not going to do a full on group buy for them they will be 1 per keyboard and only if we have enough parties to make it worth orihalcon's and my time. Everyone needs to also understand he's doing this as a favor if we decide to, these are not his normal prices. These cables normally run $37.33. I've seen photos and they look amazing! If we have a good response and you want to change from ASAP to getting a USB SDL cable just let me know. I do not at this time know how long it will take him to make the cables as we don't yet have a count on who will want one.
I really hope I'm not breaking any classified rules here I just want to get everyone the best product I can.

I'll second this - I have one and it's been absolutely brilliant, plugged, unplugged, carried around all over the place, and it just keeps working.
Also this is a great thread - I laugh when I realise how difficult it was for me to get a reasonably priced SSK a while back. Now I have two, so not looking for another.

If you get a USB cable I will ship your board as soon as we have the cables, assuming we get enough people interested. Then when the PS2 cables are found if you pay shipping on those I will just send them out. I really will have no need for 100 SDL to PS2 cables after all.
Keep in mind there will be a slight delay from invoice paid to shipping so that we can get the cables made and include them should we have enough USB cable interest.

The SSK so far have a 99% positive test. The FSK have had some that have keys that stick or don't register. Sticking is much easier to fix as they usually just need cleaned.
However since they mostly came out of a school some time around 1998, some brilliant person thought writing 'SPACE BAR' and 'I' on some of them in permeant marker. I have simple green and alcohol which I know are good solutions for removing such blasphemy, but does anyone have any better suggestions before I do?
Also everyone is aware that white/grey label SSK are single piece keycaps? I imagine you guys know this better than I but I want to be clear and up-front.
I'll update the main post later but including myself and the owner of the keyboards we are at a count of 10 on the USB cables. I figure most people wont check the thread till after work today.

That just gets you the keyboard sooner than later for those wanting to buy a cable on their own or have one already. The USB cable is a very good deal if your going to use it in a non-ps2 environment as you don't have to have the adapter.

There is not much difference between these, unless you are looking for an early one with a heavy plate, and I doubt seriously that many of these are that old (<1988).
I used to have 2, a 1989 and a 1992 as I recall, and I opted to keep the blue label because it was in better condition.

- two-piece keycap ssk (blue or white)
- ps2 cable (with large ferrite in ps2 side if possible or metal crimping on the sdl side if possible)
- orihalcon's usb cable (in addition to the ps2)

That is an amazing picture of ssk's, the likes the world has probably never seen before. :thumb: I can only imagine how enjoyable it was setting up those keyboards for the photo--unreal! :D (I also spied a box of Novell NetWare in the background--super stuff!)

All 3 parts of the bumper and the driver side headlight all had to be replaced. Surprisingly it was only about 1600 in damages. Had it been anything other than a truck damages would have been way worse and we may have not escaped uninjured. There were 6(that we saw) deer crossing the interstate 3 large doe and 3 smaller deer, we ended up only hitting one. They did have to wash the truck and the Uhall as it did deficate all down the side. I can sympathise with that as I'm sure I would have too. It did scamper off but doubtful that it lived.

It's running about $80USD to ship to Canada and $90+ to ship to other countries. The remailers run about 20-40 and that is a huge savings. If those of you that have used one or looked into it could chime in to help the others I would greatly appreciate it. My goal here was to get as many of thee into the hands of fellow clackers as affordably as possible and that shipping is killing the dreams of some and it's pissing me off.
I looked in to DHL but they want me to have a corporate account in order to even get a quote so if anyone has other thoughts please let us know.

As far as shipping. UPS does have daily rates for those that ship high volume. If you want to PM me a source and destination address I can check if the UPS daily rates are better than $80. If they are, UPS is really good about setting up accounts on daily rates--you just got to get in touch with a local sales rep. :thumb: With about 100+ shipments going out the door in the next month or two, I think you should qualify for daily rates. Just don't let them think you have only a finite project here. ;)
Also to add, I wouldn't bother with DHL as they're better at International Air which will be expensive. Their ground service was absolutely atrocious when we tried them out, even worse than Fedex ground.

It just seems a bit unfair, is all. There's nothing stopping an older member from reselling the SSK of course.
Also, it seems like waiting for a SDK to PS/2 cable (or the USB converter) just puts you at a disadvantage. This is because users that choose to ship immediately (without the cable) would get priority, allowing them to jump queue in front of others

This is exactly correct. Right now there will be enough Blue label to cover the list. The biggest problem is finding this box of cables. Moving some of the stuff to look for them is difficult as some boxes have been sitting for 20 years in non-climate controlled so the boxes just fall apart.

Cleaned it up and replaced the caps with single piece caps..couldn't find my f11 >:( so i just put a f5 on it out of anger.

I just ran a quote in UPS on a 13x13x6 11lb package insured to $200 and with signature required delivery from 35816 (Huntsville, AL) to 90069 (Los Angeles, CA) and it's quoting me $10.38 for UPS ground (the cheap end--still guaranteed in 5 days) and only $56.70 for next day air by 10:30a (the fastest service--also guaranteed). If you need help with getting on board with UPS, feel free to ask, but I think it would be a worthwhile investment, not only for a reduction of shipping costs, but also because UPS's workflow is pretty slick (templates, etc) on their website.

You also have the option of having it all shipped together but it's possible it could be spring before Im able to get through all 5 storage locations as there are boxes stacked 8-15 foot high in some of them and as much as 25 feet deep. My friend/former boss who actually owns all this stuff has acquired all this through 4 businesses he's owned or worked at over the past 30-40 years as well as some auction buys.
As far as UPS goes, I would have to source boxes as they will not allow me to use the USPS boxes. They have specifically told me so. So that ads about $5 to the shipping rate you are talking about. It's still cheaper yes, but here where I am getting boxes is much harder as they just closed the Staples so I would have to order boxes and pay shipping on those and that all ads up to the point where the USPS is about the same with less hassle but yes far worse tracking logistics (which everyone loves UPS for their amazing tracking). I have looked at several options and when you run all the numbers not just the surface shipping cost they all come out about the same. Unfortunately USPS is the easiest for me.
Once we have Off-Key off the ground all orders will be shipped UPS no matter what just because of the amazing logistics they have, that is if they quit trying to force me to use Windows to automate my shipping process! That will be a deal breaker as their scale, printer, software combination is Windows only at this time.

Thank you for the detailed reply on the shipping challenges. Tell me what the ideal box is and let me see if I can find it for you. I dealt with this problem regularly when I owned an auto parts distributorship, so I know some good places to get such materials and on the cheap. (We were lucky enough to have a furniture distributorship right down the street and they would throw away a whole driveaway dumpster of packing material each week. We would dumpster dive there about once every 6 months and have everything we needed.) So far in my initial quick searches, I can get you a 13x13x6 box for $1.50/ea shipped (I put in an LA zip code for the shipping, so that might vary depending on where it needs to go). I wouldn't mind even purchasing what you need for you and then you can just credit what I owe you for my ssk. :thumb: (If you need packing and the tape dispenser I can even get those for you.)
We actually never used UPS's scale, printer, or, software. We had a simple bathroom scale and rounded up by 1lb, and just used the website with a login for our account. We printed the 'labels' on a regular laser printer and just taped them on the box. Worked like clockwork. I'll try to see how the website works on my wife's mac as I'm sure it would basically be the same thing. :thumb: I'll let you know.

Payment arrangements with orihalcon have been made and I will have the cables soon.
The two of you wanting no cable at all your boards will go out Monday or Tuesday. The rest will go out as son as the cables arrive.

I tried to make arrangements with Unicomp to get some PS2 cables but they don't discount the cables till you reach a quantity of 50. So those of you still waiting on PS2 cables I apologies I'll keep looking for the cables I know I have and any other affordable solution. I do now have a closed in place to move stuff to and sort through it but we are still waiting on a heating solution other than kerosene heater. So resuming the search right after the new year will be doable.

More and more motherboards do not accommodate PS/2, and many that do are not "true" PS/2 but rather have an internal USB "adapter" anyway. And then there are power consumption issues.
Personally, I despise heavy coiled cables, but many people like them.
Last, I mis-spoke earlier. These specific cables will not bring "any" M to life, only the SDL ones.
But Orihalcon surely makes something that will bring them to life!

As much as I love my model F xt, the spacebar weight on the ssk is much better for long typing sessions.
I let a few friends try it out and one of them thinks he remembers seeing the ssk boards in Goodyear's P.R department back in the 90's. He absolutely loves it and wants to get one for himself now.

I realize. Now why i love rhe model F size so much. I put the qwerty part of the board kn the same place on my desk so their right side ends about the same as an ssk.
EDIT: the ssk does over watch just as well as my f xt and xt boards. yay

Most places here are out of small padded envelopes, and though it would be funny to send you a single keycap in a 11x15 padded envelope that seems wasteful. :) . But damn that would have ben funny.

I'm glad many of you are getting your SSKs already. I still have a few international shippments that are pending or going out on Tuesday, I'm invoicing you all tonight(12/31).
A few of you that got boards early have asked about getting the USB cables and I'll invoice you for the cable and shipping tonight(12/31) as well.
Those of you with missing caps I'll do my best to get those out on Tuesday as well some of you have been waiting far too long and to be honest, I just forgot, no excuses, I just forgot. These will goto the same address your board went. I just have to run out and get some small padded envelopes.

I did not get the caps shipped I'm still sorting through my bag of extras. Now that all the boards paid for are shipped I can harvest caps off one of the ones I still have in the house so that will happen this week.
If you don't have tracking information it means your board was shipped today and I haven.t put that into Paypal yet.
Those going international are harder as they don't have tracking, just a customs number.

I just received mine. No missing keys and a even spare spacebar since the one it came with still had sharpie on it! :thumb:

My first bolt mod was on this one; was also very nervous at first but once you cut out the first leftover rivet and drill out the first hole you'll realize its quite straightforward. After I was done I realize there's not much any point of failure in the whole process. As long as you can hold the drill straight for a few sec you're good to go. The guide in DT is pretty much what I followed.

I don't blame you for not wanting your first bolt mod to be an SSK. Bolt mods aren't terribly difficult, but there are some things I didn't fully understand until I actually went through the process (I've done one full bolt mod and one partial). The main two recommendations I'd make are 1) to make sure you drill straight holes (use some sort of brace, a good bit, and a steady hand) and 2) drill the holes before you break the sandwich apart because the metal holes don't line up quite how you'd think; also, that way, the barrel plate still has the support of the metal back plate when you're drilling.
On my first one, I broke everything apart before drilling. It was harder to get the holes aligned properly this way, and it was harder to brace the barrel plate without the metal back plate on it (it's actually a pretty flimsy piece of plastic when it's not riveted to a piece of metal).
That said, don't mutilate a Model M unless it actually NEEDS a bolt mod. If it feels nice to type on, and all the keys are functional, it doesn't need it. Weak clicks in the numpad, nav cluster, or modifier keys are the usual signs of needing one in my limited experience.

The plates need to be held together uniformly and firmly. Quite a few broken rivets may or may not be a problem, but several in near proximity to each other will probably create an unacceptable "soft spot"

My right and up arrow keys sound a bit weird. When I took it apart I noticed that the rivet was broken near them. I'll fix it one day, but for now I just accept it for it's unique sound quality :)
I opened mine and found ~14 loose rivets in the bottom of the case (mostly from the right side). Sure enough the right side is starting to separate when I squeezed the back plate and barrel plate together.
I found a guy on reddit that is willing to do the bolt mod for a reasonable price. The downside is that Unicomp doesn't make new membranes or blankets for the ssk so he would have to use the original parts. User name- Le_Sega_Dreamcast. Interesting. I will ask if he can cut a Unicomp blanket to fit the ssk. Regarding the membrane layer, I think he was referring to the plastic sheet with all the traces (pictures in his guide).

From what I can gather from the earlier pages, Orihalcon's converter was about 30 USD, so I'm assuming it'll be roughly around this price (maybe a bit more, depending on how few orders we get).
Could you ask about pricing for just PS2 cables? I guess for those people waiting (that need a cable), they can make a choice between Orihalcon's USB converter, a (possible) PS2 cable from Orihalcon, or just a PS2 cable from Unicomp as their choices.
