Worldbuilders: Charity for geeks
« on: Thu, 30 January 2014, 19:48:20 »
Worldbuilders is a charity I've donated to for the last few years. It was started by one of my favorite current authors, Pat Rothfuss, who is writing a fantasy series called The Kingkiller Chronicles.

Worldbuilders is an organization he formed to raise money for Heifer International. For those who don't know, Heifer International provides sustainable resources like livestock to communities. The idea is that businesses can form around these livestock, allowing the communities to raise themselves out of poverty.

Every year, tons of authors, publishers, and other various organizations donate books, collectables, and a bunch of other stuff for a giant lottery. Every $10 donated to Worldbuilders buys you a ticket. The chances of winning something with a $10 donation are pretty small, but it's a fun perk nonetheless! Thousands of books and other prizes have been donated this year, many of them signed/rare editions.

Just about a half-million dollars has been raised this year, and early $100k of that in the last 24 hours. This has been going on for a couple of months now, and there are 3 days left. If you want to contribute, you can learn more about the charity at http://worldbuilders.org/ and on Pat's blog at http://patrickrothfuss.com/.
