Nice. Too bad they aren't free shipping like the Chinese ones were / are, but still nice to see they are still some available. :-)

What's the difference between the Chinese and Japanese model other than the characters on the caps?

Thanks for the heads up. I was hoping my weeb ass wouldn't have to settle for the Chinese one.

What's the difference between the Chinese and Japanese model other than the characters on the caps?

They're exactly the same (both also have double zero and triple zero variations, but that also shouldn't matter).

Very tempted to buy one, but I think I'm way too lazy to get one working on a modern pc.

It's quite simple: soarer made it work before he left. Just remove the controller IC, drop in a teensy, put in a few jumpers and done. It works with the rows directly and in tandem with the mux chip for the columns. If you cut it in half you can solder a teensy in whree the mux chip is located, which makes the mod a lot easier.

Weeb? Is that related to keeb?

That's because you're One Classy Dude.

So don't bother. Just put it somewhere where you, and anyone else who drops by who appreciates quality, rarity 'n' coolness, can admire it. It's a work of art. It doesn't have to be performance art.

:D  Why thank you, Fine Sir.

And this is a very good point about keyboards being art--because they are, especially for us.  Why else would there be so much interest in a book just showcasing these wonderful (and many times functional) works of art?

Hey, has anyone noticed? There are actually two variants of these Japanese boards:

IBM 5954339

183430-0

IBM 6112884

183432-1

The number pads are different! Of course this means we must all have one of each.

Oh dear!  I think I have the 5954339 vs the 6112884.  I guess they just his the period on the 5954339 for numbers that had a decimal?

What if there are also two variants of the Chinese board? Would we need to have four?

I don't know about you guys (does anybody?), but I just spent 10 obsessive minutes flipping back and forth between those two photos.

This seems like an interesting and affordable project. I wonder if I should get one and put it together with the Teensy controller. How many people have done it so far?

Quite a few I believe. In case some folks haven't seen it on other threads:

It's fairly simple with a DB9 connector and  Hasu's  TMK converter.

184743-0

This is some wiring info from TMK documentation:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keyboard Plug from front:

DSUB-9
-------------
\ N 2 3 4 5 /
\ N N N N /
---------
2 GND
3 VCC 5V
4 DATA
5 CLOCK
N No connection/No pin.

Connection

In case of using ATMega32U4/U2 (EDIT: The Teensy 2.0 uses the ATMega32U4)

1. Supply power with VCC and GND.
2. Connect CLOCK to PD1 and DATA to PD0. You can change pin with config.h.
3. Optionally you may need pull-up resistor. 1KOhm probably work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TMK converter and keyboard editor links:

The DB9 connector I used:
