Title: [IC] grid 650, GB is live, update with typing sound tests 3
Post by: gridishere on Mon, 02 November 2020, 08:57:36
Hi there,

[updates 01.16.2021]

A sound test with Holy Panda is here.
The keyboard is fitted with a prototype version of Module Type-07 ARRAY, with not finishes.

[updates 01.14.2021]

Huge thanks to migorengs.  We worked together to create a visual simulator to demo all color combinations for grid 650.

Please check here.

https://www.mechs.io/simulator/configure/4345/

Mechs.io is his website.

You can also find him on Instagram.

[updates 01.11.2021]

We have a new sound test video with Ink Black V2 switches and MOD4 FLASH.
The setup uses a thin lithium battery instead of a 18650 battery.

In the past 2 weeks, we have optimized many things.

Thanks for your feedback and support.

[updates 12.23.2020]

We did some sound tests with lubed Tealio V2. There is a comparison between plateless mount / 4mm ANSI plate / 1.5mm universal plate.
Thanks for your support.

[updates 12.06.2020]

Before GB happens, we need to appreciate az5's brilliant idea to extend the groove for Module 9 STAND. Now the improved version will work with a phone with a maximum length of 185mm or 7.28inch. Technically it can fit a iPad Pro 11inch in vertical.
We love to hear from you ;D
It should look like this.

[updates 12.03.2020]

We have new updates!  It is about price, GB info, plate options, and colorway.

The price of grid 650 starts at $365 for a wired plateless version with Module 01 CLASSIC, and it goes up to $490 with its gasket mount variant plus Module 07 ARRAY.

Groupbuy will launch at 9 AM PST December 10th till January 17th, 2021, on zFrontier. Module 10 CIRCLE will not be available at this GB because of some tolerance issues.

We will shot a build video and sound tests in mid-December.

Shipping will start in April 2020.

There are four different PCBs:
All the boards run on QMK, and the wired variants are VIA-compatible.

For the BLE version, it is challenging due to the limits of ROM size. We are still working on that. Nevertheless, you will not be able to modify any BLE related keycodes unless VIA starts to support it. Still, it is possible to use the wired version firmware with the BLE board.

There are two different plate options:
The plates are indeed expensive as they are milled out of aluminum blocks like the chassis. The plate option also includes two sets of silicone gaskets, hard and soft, and other accessories.

Here is what a set would look like, modules are for reference:

Many thanks!

[updates 11.14.2020]
We have some major updates. Mostly about modules. Check https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=109386.msg2979576#msg2979576 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=109386.msg2979576#msg2979576)

Many thanks

Hi there,
grid is back, and we've prepared something new.

grid 650 is a 65% custom mechanical keyboard. It represents what we imagine when retro and timeless styles meet excellent functionalities.

Spec-wise:

Chassis:

Hub:

PCB:

Updates on Modules:

Some further explanation:

This image indicates the plate-less mounting option. The PCB is attached to the chassis through 10 evenly distributed screw holes. The build-in leaf spring structure further enhances the flex of the PCB.

This image indicates the Gasket Mount option. Firstly, the plate is positioned by four specially designed O-ring structure. These O-rings provide constant pressure on the plate. Then, the plate is supported by six individual silicon bushings.

We will include two sets of bushings with different resistance.

You can easily swap the silicon bushings.

The layouts.

The PCB is powered by QMK BLE. Module 5 PRESS is now connected to the mainboard directly. For people want to use VIA. The non-BLE version will be available as well.

The hub of grid 650 is another challenge for us. We put a reversible female USB 2.0 Type-A port because it is at the back. Also, we paid some efforts to make all three elements, the switch, USB-C, and USB-A, center-aligned.
We choose Texas Instrument's chip for battery management and voltage step-down. We recommend a 18650 battery when you are not using Module 4 FLASH, as it is the most accessible battery. So, no worries about the future.

Front LED indicator.

The front LED indicator has four colors and five modes.

Yes, the indicator works in a retro and utilitarian fashion.

We will be providing more information and module updates in about one week. Stay tuned and maybe check our Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/gridishere/ (https://www.instagram.com/gridishere/).
Best,
grid

This is quite the upgrade.  Will you have prototype units available for someone to type on?  The mounting is interestign.  Need some seasoned advice on how it feels in real life.

Angle of the keyboard? Front height, rear height measurements?

5.5 degree incline.
Chassis front height is 19.4mm or 0.764inch; chassis rear height is 33.7mm or 1.33inch. If you are using GMK keycaps, the height measured from the center of keycaps to desktop will be 27mm or 1.06inch. Which is about 1mm lower than grid 600.

I'm curious as to the Bluetooth implementation using QMK. Is this going to be a fairly stock BLE configuration using the MDBT40 and just the base QMK firmware code?

I don't think the base code support supports hardware indicators so I would love to see the firmware implementation eventually chosen. I'd assume it's going to be open sourced since that's a requirement for QMK/VIA support anyways.

I love it! The only thing I could possible add is a separation of the arrow keys. I always loved how much extra metal bordered the keys. It naturally lends itself to an isolated arrow cluster I think. Either way, I am on board. So happy this is 65%! Can’t wait! Thank you for bringing it back!

And what's the price of this btw? Any proto? Plate options?????

Am I being annoying or are these points that should be in the original IC

this feels more like a marketing thing than an actual interest check

Get rid of the side mounting points, it feels terrible and really ruins a board. You rendered a thick plate, but please consider a 1.5mm plate alongside the non-hotswap PCB.

  • All new modules will be available for grid600 as well.
Does that mean that mean that grid 600 is getting another run soon? Or does that mean that the modules will be interchangeable between grid 600 and grid 650?

Will plate and/or PCB be open-sourced?  Very interested in doing a small/private run of Boardwalk PCBs for this if so.
Would love to do that.

Then put me down for two!

I want in on this so bad. But would that mean a 65% Boardwalk? Or is 600 happening at the same time? Would that mean a BLE Boardwalk? Would the USB hub still work? I am salivating over here.

This checks pretty much every box for me that are just not available in most customs: Hotswap, BLE, USB Hub. If a Boardwalk version of this were available it would be actually be a dream board. If there were some way to get RGB underglow going (even just a small diffuser) somewhere would make it perfect.

I hope the Flash module will be available in a few different colors.

Post by: gridishere on Fri, 13 November 2020, 11:13:37
Hi there, gird is here.

After hearing some feedback and some talk with you guys. We decided to do a limited run of WKL version of the keyboard.
We spent some time to implement WKL layout support in the non-hotswap board.

So the layout now is a little different. See here.

GB will be held at zFrontier this decemeber.
Expected fulfill date: MAY 2021.
Still working on the colorway, and suggestions are more than welcomed.

All existing 5 module designs will come in the 650's version. We will be producing 5 new modules for grid 650, and 4 of them will be available for grid 600.

Any possibility of some of the older modules returning for the Grid600? I missed out on the Neon module the first time around, and they aren't exactly common, so buying it on /r/mechmarket isn't really an option.

Also, which of the new modules will be made for the 600?

I wish i could have FLASH and Circle on the same mod..

I think it would be cool to divide the mod section into 2 mod sections.
1 smaller, taking up a 1/3 to the left, where you could have smaller versions of the Circle, Stand, Array, Press, and Neon.
And the 2nd, taking up the rest of the original mod section 2/3, where the options could be the Classic, Classic S, Peaks, Flash, Waves, and Linear.

Maybe you could take that idea and run with it on a TKL version next time, I guess.

Will plate and/or PCB be open-sourced?  Very interested in doing a small/private run of Boardwalk PCBs for this if so.
Would love to do that.

Then put me down for two!

I'm so down for this! Though isn't this board bigger than the Boardwalk's 60%?

From the new modules, I would have to say I like Type-07 ARRAY the most. Do you have any prototypes of the display itself? It looks like a 16-segment display design with a retro nixie tube feel in the renders and just wondering how you were planning on achieving that effect. Great work!

Nixie tube made me think of vacuum tubes.... vacuum tubes made me think of amps.... MAKE A VACUUM TUBE HEADPHONE AMP MODULE!!!! Vacuum tubes sticking out of keyboard would look dope.

It is kind of crazy, given that the mech and audio communities seem to share many of the same constituents that no one has yet come up with a keyboard with an amp/DAC in it.... (if only i had the motivation..)

Way more than a bit niche to ask for, but perhaps purple? Purple, like, 'Dark Purple', RAL 300 20 25 Purple. Not sure I can recall another board in the 40%+ class in any shade since the CA66, so I have to ask. But of course grey (like, graphite?) is lovely too!

I rather have a vac tube amp then a DAC. (I rather have both, but if i had to pick one..) I would try to do a "collab" with a small/moderately sized audio company. I would try contacting "Schiit.com" 1st. Great products, GREAT prices. They're an awesome company. Do collabs with other small companies all the time. All ready have fairly small sized DACs and amps, and have several products that are "modular' and sell pcb upgrades for their products. And i just like the company.
You could also just do a simple "equalizer" module.
That, or maybe contacting Drop's audio community, and seeing if they know or can recommend any companies/people

Oh man, that sounds like a great idea and would look incredible. it would keep your desk clean too since your keyboard now doubles as an amp/dac if you were going to have those anyway.

We've seriously thought about that! Will be great if we can work with people with experience with DAC. Maybe one day we can let some good looking Nixie tube sing a harmony for us.

I can second that Schiit makes very good audio products, and I would be ecstatic to own a keyboard with a Schiit DAC+AMP built in :)

Here are my favorite module. I especially love ARRAY

Module Type-10 CIRCLE : top class, I would love that really.

Module Type-08V LINEAR-V : subdued, if it's cheap I'll buy a spare just for the change

Module Type-07 ARRAY : my top buy, please make it stand alone, and not software slaved

Module Type-02 NEON : I love the look, if it's cheap I will buy as spare

The color is great, but may I suggest a mutted and matte white color instead of the plain white? Almost like a light grey.

For the module, I love your renders already!

Open an IC so I can't miss that!

Any ideas on GB length? I'd hope for a longer period like a month to have time to get all the modules.

Gorgeous. Would also like to know price and quantity of the sale. Very keen and amazing work!

Will there be other colors beside white and black for base?

We are considering grey as an option. Any suggestions?

Silver would be nice, and I like the almost black navy shown so far in renders.

If it would be possible to add leaf springs to the plate that would really help with the consistency and soft typing feel that the gasket mount can bring.

I would also like to see a blocker that separates the arrow keys.

purchased multiple items from Zfrontier before, and haven't had any issues with them. shipping is fast and their packaging is good. I'm in NA, and they seem to be the first to ship among GBs that span multiple vendors. that said, i haven't had to deal with their CS before, so i can't speak on that end.

Thanks for pointing that out.
Things do happen occasionally with zFrontier.
From what I learned from working with them, they are okay and they are still helping us with failed part replacement and so on.
We've also designed a new set of packaging so it should help as well.
You can always E-mail me if there is anything that disappoints you and we will do our best to work it out.

It looks like a PDSP-188x you've got there! I love those displays I have 6 in a box right behind me. Any chance we would have a module that has more than two side-by-side? Maybe multiple lines of these displays arranged on the top of the keyboard?

It would be, should be around March. Working on the resistance of the knob and possibly a completely new structure.
We will see if we can make that ship before May.

You can order a BLE board and a wired PCB. Both of them should work fine. The wired version is simply without the BLE module.

I wanted to ask about the side mounting points on the plate options.  There appears to be direct contact of the case and plate and then an o-ring before the screw.  I would think just based on looking at it that is would take away from the gasket mounted feel and if there was compression it might make noise when the two come back in to contact?  Clearly I'm missing something, can you help educate me as to how this works?

65% layout, QMK BLE, with optional non BLE version

All the boards run on QMK, and the wired variants are VIA-compatible.

For the BLE version, it is challenging due to the limits of ROM size. We are still working on that. Nevertheless, you will not be able to modify any BLE related keycodes unless VIA starts to support it. Still, it is possible to use the wired version firmware with the BLE board.

This means the BLE pcb supports QMK, which is fully programmable. :thumb:

Can the BLE version also be used wired-mode, i mean once the keyboard is wired, will the Bluetooth shut down and will start to charge the battery while the keyboard will use the cable (low-latency)?

Or the bluetooth versione once is it wires, will just charge but the keyboard will still go in bluetooth mode (with the consequence of blt-latency)

I also had a few questions I just want to clarify before purchasing:

1. To confirm, since it's a little unclear, if I go with the BLE board, will VIA not work at all, not even if using it wired?
2. How complicated is the set up for the battery, especially if using the FLASH module? Is it worth going with BLE if I plan on using FLASH?
3. What is the plate material? How much stiffer will the 4mm plate be vs 1.5mm + felt?
4. I too was wondering how the bootloader will work for programming the FLASH module.
5. Will more modules be easily available at a later date?

Thanks so much! Super excited!

It is possible to get a 4mm thick universal plate?  I would really like the option to get both and more importantly the consistent feel the 4mm one is supposed to provide.

Is there a possibility for a hotswap PCB for the WKL version?

We don’t have this option available unfortunately. We will think and prototype on that. The feedback come from a 4mm universal plate should be not even though, given the amount of material taken at the bottom row.

wonder if the module can be avalible in E-white as well? Going for that universal look with the E white but silver seems not really matching and black is too subtle....
Also want more renders plz! Zfrontier dont have enough renders to show different options! TY

Sorry no E-white models.

We do have many request on that. We are considering to do that. However we do love the feel of the 4mm version (which is also more expensive to manufacture).

Thanks for pointing that out. Actually there are EVA paddings between 2 aluminium pieces. Those paddings were not shown in the first explosion rendering. Sorry for causing that confusion.

1.Thanks for asking. We do have a test version firmware for BLE board with limited support. Basicaly if you would never touch those BLE-related keycodes, you should be okay. However, we need to do some long time test before we can confirm things like stability.
2. If you can do some soldering, you should be okay.
3. Plates are made of aluminium, machine-milled to give it the most accurate shape.
4. Answered above, it would be like an Arduino, and it is fairly easy to work with.
5. We have Module Type-10 CIRCLE in the pipeline and we are working on a better structure design (the current one has a little bit play). We would love to make more and ideas are more than welcomed!

Hope it helps. Many thanks.

Thanks for asking that. We haven't look into the Mill-Max sockets situation. They should be compatible but I am a little concerned about the strength of some pins as, in some cases, cut into half to fit other layouts. Also, we used the space for split backspace for BLE chips. That's why.

The included cable will help you to connect a third-party battery. The battery needs to be thin like the one used in tablets and go underneath the chassic.
FLASH is fully compatible with a wired version and we recommend to use FLASH in a wired setup, considering it will drain the battery fast.

Wait...the 1.5mm plate won't work with hotswap? That's what I just ordered. Your post said it's a universal plate, I assumed that meant it would work with all PCBs/layouts. And the zFrontier site didn't stop me from picking that option.

EDIT: Never mind, I see this in the original post now, I either missed it or it was updated since I first looked:

4mm stiff plate designed for hotswap boards
1.5mm universal plate designed for solderable boards

Would be nice if the zFrontier store stopped you from picking incompatible options. Now I have to get them to cancel my order.

You get it completely right.

The module type-04 FLASH is recommended for wired setup because it takes the space for the 18650 battery holder and is thirsty for the battery.

The DIY process requires:
1. Attach a thin flat lithium battery onto the base plate.
2. Cut off some felt to give the battery some space.
3. Wire the provided cable.

Notice that the battery is now on the base plate instead of middle frame of the keyboard, so take it easy when you open the keyboard.

If it is a wired setup. You don't need a 18650 battery holder.
And that is fully compatible with FLASH without any modifications.

To clarify, the solder boards (which support split backspace) do still have BLE correct? You just mean the chips are in a different location on the hotswap pcb?

Also, I'm wondering what the drill size is for the pins? I understand the strength concern with the cut pins, but mostly I want to make sure the drill size is large enough, as I have seen pcbs that can't support mill-max due to the drill size being too small.

Is the Module 10 CIRCLE, happening in the future?

Yes, most likely March 2021.
The thing is that we are not happy with the knob feeling right now.
Also, we have some feedback on merging this module with other modules, like Module 07 ARRAY.
So some engineering works need to be done.

Thanks for the reply, this is really interesting I was one of the people who asked those two modules to be merged so if that is happening I can skip 07 ARRAY module this time around and get the combined module in the future!

Two more questions about the modules:

Module Type-04 FLASH: Is this QMK programmable?
Module Type-05 PRESS: Is this hotswap or solderable?

wondering as well if we need to solder for the press module. hoping its hotswap

I'd give him more of a chance to respond bro. Before this GB launched, and after the grid600 launched, I sent him some emails asking about his next project, etc, and he always got back to me, and emailed me updates about this GB. He seemed like a good dude.

For the MOD-04 FLASH,

It can run off the USB cable and that's what we prefer to offer.

The "battery DIY cables" are for people who really like a wireless, battery-powered FLASH setup. As the FLASH module takes the space for the 18650 battery holder, a flat thin tablet battery is required for that setup. The DIY cables are for connecting the tablet battery to our HUB PCB.

For the MOD-07 ARRAY,

The CR1220 battery is for its internal clock, for the time function.
That module can run off the USB cable or 18650 battery.

If you plan a wired-only version. You don't need the 18650 battery holder or DIY cables.

Hope it helps!

So if I run wired only, how do I connect these 2 modules so they run of USB power?

Same I have a few questions @gridishere

-About 4 Flash.
It's not very clear to me how it works.

I have to remove the battery holder, but why are there "battery DIY cables" included?
Can't it run off the USB cable?

-About 7 Array.
Same, why does it need a dedicated CR1220 battery?
Can't it run off the USB cable? Or the 18650 battery?

-If I plan on using only a wired version, should I just not install the 18650 battery holder?

A big part of the appeal of this board is changing the modules, but if it requires wiring and some DIY it kinda is a bigger process than I imagined.

There is a 6 pin cable connecting those two modules to the HUB PCB. You don't need to connect extra cables to use them.

Hey Grid team, are you able to provide me with the top images of all the cases and modules in their various colours? The reasoning being is I want to put together a website/simulator to help people decide/visualise the different combinations of case and modules (in their various colours) according to however they want. It would be great if you can provide because I have quite a few people wanting the same thing. Or if you cannot provide are you able to setup a simulator yourselves so people can visually swap and choose what combinations they like?

Thank you!

Agreed, I have changed my mind on colours of modules about 5 times now. Was thinking of doing a janky photoshop job to see, but would love something more official to help guide me.

I too started an attempt to do some basic cutting/pasting/layering from the existing images to try to check the various combos I’d consider. An interactive tool would be fantastic!

I would love to know more about the Type 07 Array.  What exactly can be displayed and how is the display changed or sent information to?  Is there a dedicated APP for the PC?  Is there a limit to what it can be used for in terms of information or will it be able to be programmed?

I also would like to be able to compare colour options across the entire range, I would like to order multiple combos but I am finding it difficult to work them all out.

This question has been asked 4 times now I think...still waiting for a definitive answer. The descriptions in the listing imply that you can only use the 4mm plate with hotswap, but would like confirmation if that's correct.

There are three 2x12mm tritium tubes. One single tube has roughly 0.01ml tritium.

Thanks for your interest, ARRAY can display current time, your PC hardware info, and custom texts.
A PC software is required for hardware info readout. You can program ARRAY using Arduino. We will provide the original code.

We reckon it could be difficult to pick the best colors at. It also largely depend on the key caps of your choice.

So is there any particular reason why none of the modules are offered in e-white? Very surprising given that all modules come in navy and black as options so you can color match that, but none for the white? Not even the Classic penholder?

Love the product, and will definitely be picking it up, but it feels like that was an easy miss on the design of the overall offering.

I wanted in white, but it seems like the dumb move to make since I can't properly match it with any modules for a clean all-white look.

In the end, it's up to the designer to release colors or designs that satisfies their creative direction. I think it's completely fair that he may not release colors that satisfies everyone.

I also find the decision to not offer white modules a bit strange considering white is one of the 3 board color options, and having 7 accent colors but not one being a direct match feels like a miss.

I guess silver is fairly neutral, but what I like about white is that it goes with everything.
Right now I kinda have to have a set in mind that would go with the right colored module.

Since modules are swappable and since other ones are coming down the line. I'm sure it's probably possible to do another run with white as an option.

I mean sure, but then that's just common-GB-sense.

Everything regarding this product is C L E A R L Y put together with the utmost attention to detail; to that effect, obviating one of the base color options altogether as an option for the modules is just... odd, and unfortunate.

Maybe it was cost prohibitive, and they would've had to upcharge customers for the e-white options on the modules given it's the only color that requires a different process than anno?

If that's the case, please charge us and give us the option!

And If it's not, I'd love learn where that decision came from :)

E-white is a finish kind of like coating, which adds a small amount of thickness to the chassis or parts.
We are concerned if both the module or the keyboard is e-white, the fit between them could be too tight.

Sorry that we can't provide this option and we hope you can understand.

Hoping you could answer more specific clarifying questions which don't seem to have been answered yet:
  • Is Module 5 PRESS hotswap?
  • Is the 18650 battery holder affixed to the case? Specifically, when you say that "the FLASH module takes the space for the 18650 battery holder", does this mean that before module 4 is put in (without the DIY battery setup), the entire holder must be removed, or just the 18650 battery itself must be removed from the holder?
  • Does the DIY battery setup replace the 18650 battery entirely, or does the 18650 battery and/or its holder need to be reinstalled when the FLASH module is swapped out for a different module?
  • Are the buttons on Module 4 able to turn off the LED strip entirely, such that it could remain installed while using BLE without the DIY battery setup?

Thanks for your interest,

1. Module 5 PRESS is indeed hotswap
2. The battery holder is secured to the chassis by 2 screws. The battery holder needs to be removed before installing module 4 FLASH.
3. The DIY batter setup should replace the 18650 battery holder entirely. Still, it is recommended to use FLASH in the wired mode.
4. YES, but it will still consume some energy.

Hope it helps!

Hi, thanks for providing us with more insight into the flash module.

In relation to question 4, can you please clarify this - so even though the lighting is off, the battery will still be drained? Will this affect standby time by a lot?

I've got a few more question to add below if you don't mind responding:

A) with the bluetooth PCB option, how many devices can the pcb remember? And if more than one, can you please briefly describe the process to change the device the keyboard is connected to?

B) on the zfrontier page, it states that using the BATTERY PROTECTION BYPASS will void your warranty. Can you please explain what this means? Is this required to install the DIY battery to use the flash module wirelessly?

Thanks in advance.

This is because the MCU won't go into sleep mode when it is off, and the IC inside those addressable RGB LEDs can't be turned off. We can potentially make the MCU sleep when the lights are off. We assume this setup will take half the battery life.

A. It can remember many devices and will try to connect to the last connected device. For example, if you have paired grid 650 BLE with both your phone and computer. The keyboard is now connected to your phone. Disconnect it from your phone, and the keyboard will connect to your computer.

B. Using BATTERY PROTECTION BYPASS means you are connecting the battery directly to the voltage step-up circuit inside the HUB. Most lithium batteries should work just fine. However, we can't guarantee the quality of the third-party battery, and there is a meager chance it may fry the step-up circuit. For example, if one connects a 7.4V battery into our system, the voltage step-up chip will be damaged.

Hope it helps!

Thanks for the info. Does that mean that if you are able to implement the sleep mode for the MCU when the lights are off, it would solve the battery drain issue? Or is the IC unable to be turned off either way?

If you are able to solve this battery drain issue when the lights are off, I would get this module for sure!

Should be just the HUB board. Main PCB only take 3.3V generate on the HUB.

This is because the MCU won't go into sleep mode when it is off, and the IC inside those addressable RGB LEDs can't be turned off. We can potentially make the MCU sleep when the lights are off. We assume this setup will take half the battery life.

Thanks for the info. Does that mean that if you are able to implement the sleep mode for the MCU when the lights are off, it would solve the battery drain issue? Or is the IC unable to be turned off either way?

If you are able to solve this battery drain issue when the lights are off, I would get this module for sure!

If a battery does fry the hub, would replacing the usb hub pcb fix the keyboard, or would the main pcb have to be replaced as well?

Thanks again!

Should be just the HUB board. Main PCB only take 3.3V generate on the HUB.

Thanks for that. Can you please also comment on the other question regarding the battery drain too? Cheers.

We will test that in the weekend. Will let you know.

Got an update?

Yes. Sorry for coming late.

We did some thorough tests (power, stability, and thermal ) and figured out that FLASH's power consumption was pretty high even when all lights were off. It was designed for wired use.

The actual number was 70mA@5V, 6 times more than our BLE PCB.

It was pretty bad and we were not happy with it.

We started to solve that problem immediately.

A PCB was created and software was improved.

The new version consumes about 3mA @5V when all lights are off.

Still, it affects battery life a little. We hope it is good enough for most people.

Thanks very much for asking us this question.

Best,
grid

Hi Grid,

So I will place my order in the coming days, but I still have a few questions.

-You said on the 3rd of December that a video explaining the 1.5 vs 4mm plate was coming. Any update on this?
-I need the hotswap version, but that also means I can only get the WK version. The grid 600 came with blockers I believe, will the 650 also come with blockers? If not, any chance I could find the grid 600 blockers somewhere?
-Is the rose color for the 650, the same as the grid 600 rose gold color?
-Is the module 10 Circle 100% coming? (so that I can plan which modules I need to buy)
-I will try to get an extra plate, PCB and USB-HUB PCB, but getting those extras gets pretty expensive and my cart is already at over 800$ with the different modules (which means over 1000$ after import taxes sadly).
Will it be possible to get USBHUB/PCB/plates later on? If not, the grid 600 I believe supported other PCB like some KBD ones, will it be the same with the 650? It's just in case something goes wrong in the future, it would be a nice peace of mind to know I can still find parts.

This is the most I ever spent on a keyboard, so I want to make sure I get everything right.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your interest.

-We have uploaded a sound test video comparing 1.5 and 4mm plates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DygA5pyuFf4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DygA5pyuFf4)
-Unfortunately, we don't have win key blocks for grid 650 right now. 600's block is not compatible with 650's. We will consider designing one.
-It will be 100% coming.
-grid 650 features our in-house designed BLE PCB so I assume it wouldn't be available elsewhere. We will share the PCB design guideline with those who are capable of designing PCBs. We provide long support for our product for a least 5 years and hopefully more. So don't worry about the spare parts. The listing is mainly for price reference.

Let me know if you have other questions.

@gridishere: I mentioned before about doing a Boardwalk PCB for this.  Is there any chance the original PCB would be open-sourced so that I can use the measurements for making a custom PCB to fit this case?  Double kudos if you're able to share your bluetooth implementation so I can match your feature set  :)

I picked up two of these boards for myself for this project, so you know I'm taking it seriously!

Edit:  BTW if I pick up the wire only PCB, will I still get the HUB PCB with the battery holder?  My second grid is a barebones unit, since a Boardwalk will be going into it.  I want to make sure I could still make a wireless Boardwalk PCB work in it.

Awesome news and thanks for the information.

-Just to clarify where will I be able to get PCB/plates in the future since you mention 5 years of support?
-You missed my question about the "rose" color, is it the same as the "rose gold" from Grid 600 or a different shade?
-The video seems to work perfectly fine with the 1.5mm plate, why was it not recommended for hotswaps? I am still not really sure which one I prefer, to me the 4mm sounds more muted, while the 1.5 I feel you hear the switches more.

Blockers would be incredible, it really is my only gripe with the board, I really like a blocker before my arrows keys.

We will share a PCB design guideline at the end of our GB, including Pin definition and a CAD file for layouts. QMK codes will be available as well. It might take some time to update.

We can't guarantee the supply on plates (will do our best). But electronics, absolutely.
The rose color will be very close.
The reason is mostly that the 1.5mm univseral plate doesn't hold the switches as nicely as the 4mm ANSI ones. Also, the 1.5mm plate doesn't support the Enter key as steady as the 4mm plate.

I came to the conclusion that a white case with black modules would come out looking a refined Rams-y retro style, and still being a neutral canvas to any kind of keycap.

That's pretty much where I landed too. I'm doing White chassis with black PRESS, and teal Peaks in case I want a splash of color for awhile. Also the white chassis will probably look good alongside my white Apple Magic Trackpad.

That's probably because some shipping routes are temporarily affected by COVID restrictions. Maybe you can use a relative or friend living in an unaffected country as your "personal proxy"?

-Any update on a potential blocker?

If not, does the WKL solder version support Mill-Max?

I would much prefer to go with hotswap, but I would really like to know if a blocker will be available.

-The Array module can be used on a Mac to display time and custom messages right? It's just hardware info that is not available?
Is everything configured just via the 2 buttons or installing a software is required? When I google "Catalina Bootloader" I just get some hackintosh related stuff.

Thanks

You should be putting on a white primer (you can use a different color primer if you want, like black or gray, but it will alter the color of the top coat significantly) before you paint whatever color you want to put on as the top coat. So it should not matter which color you decide to get. You might also want to sand the keyboard before priming in order to improve adhesion, but we are talking about a keyboard here... it's not like it's going to see the abuse a car or gun would see, so i don't think it really matters.
You can cerakote it yourself fairly easily, except for having to sandblast it down to the bare metal, and that's  not actually difficult or anything, it just requires the purchase of a decent air compressor, which is a couple hundo.
The single best tip i can give you: Get some plastic spoons, and practice whatever paint job you want on some of them. That way, you can test multiple colors, in multiple shades, and multiple top coats (flat, semi, gloss) to figure out the PERFECT color/paint job for you.

Hi there,

Sorry, we have been working hard on finalizing some design details.
We are not going to make blockers this time. However, we can design one and share the 3D file if you can manage to get it made.

Mill-Max should work fine. The pin holes for the switches is 1.4mm in diameter.
For ARRAY, yes. We are still looking into support hardware info for MAC but can't guarantee that.
ARRAY can be recognized on a computer as an Arduino Leonardo. It is fairly easy to program it.

You are god damn right I'm interested! I'd prefer a circle and flash combo, but I'll will definitely take that one.
You guys should consider a multiple module keyboard next time. You could just keep the same design as this one (grid 650) but turn each of the side bezels into a module.
CIRCLE on the left, ARRAY on the right, and FLASH up top!

That would be the perfect module for me, but I would feel bad if I purchase Array now and in a few months this new module with Array + Circle is revealed.

And thanks for the other information, I will look into where I could find somebody that could make a blocker then.

I can't imagine it will be released with this GB. I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread, that CIRCLE will be happening at a latter date. Possibly this "combo" module will be released at the same, or, and i thinks it's likely, even latter.
(I have no inside knowledge what so ever, so this is just pure speculation on my end.)
EDIT: Yeah, on page 4 of this thread, the GB runners states that the CIRCLE mod will most likely be happening in March.

(I have no inside knowledge what so ever, so this is just pure speculation on my end.)
EDIT: Yeah, on page 4 of this thread, the GB runners states that the CIRCLE mod will most likely be happening in March.

Yes Circle is supposed to be revealed soon which I was planning on purchasing, same as Array.

But I'd much rather purchase 1 module that combines both, so it would be awesome to know if that would be coming for sure in the future.

Awww Yeah! Just put my order in. I usually prefer the look of wkl, but it's doesn't work for me on this one. I also went with the Flash module, and I'm thinking about getting the array too.. Ideally, i'd like to try and "mod" the mods, and combine both into one..

Thanks for your support!
We are thinking of a module combine Circle and ARRARY. Don't know if you will be interested.

Would it be possible to confirm if this new module that combines Circle and Array will happen before the GB ends?
That would be the perfect module for me, but I would feel bad if I purchase Array now and 1 month later this new module with Array + Circle comes out.

And thanks for the other information, I will look into where I could find somebody that could make a blocker then.

E-white is a finish kind of like coating, which adds a small amount of thickness to the chassis or parts.
We are concerned if both the module or the keyboard is e-white, the fit between them could be too tight.

Sorry that we can't provide this option and we hope you can understand.

Hey!

Do you see yourself prototyping that, even if for just the classic/classic-s in that colorway as a limited option, or something in that vein?
I haven't made my purchase yet, but plan to. Just still wanna figure out if a module is a possibility in some way shape or form, or if at least an interest check for that is even possible as well, before making my final decision.

It's the one thing this board is missing!

Thanks mate

Anyone got a weird thing going on where no matter which module is picked the price remains the same? Also, I thought zfrontier did free shipping.

Yes, while the price for the module you choose with the board is mentioned, it's only getting applied on the checkout summary.

Hi Grid,

I would like to place my order soon, since the GB ending date is very close, I hope you will have the time to answer about the potential Circle+Array module that you presented.

Personally it would be my perfect module and I would order at least 2 colors, and I don't mind waiting if it releases several months after the rest. But I would really hate to order regular Array now, if this combo module is available later :(
Do you think you will be able to confirm if this module will be made before the end of the GB period or that isn't possible?

(Well it's probably too late to do anything about EU vendors now, but basically the board will cost about 30% more for most EU residents due to high import taxes :( )

Sorry for the high import taxes.

The chance for us to release an ARRAY+CIRCLE combined module is 75%.  We will also consider reusing the PCB in ARRAY if possible.

Thanks for considering our product.

I will need to think if I want to take the risk of skipping  Array now, and take the chance Circle+Array combined doesn't get made :(
Ahhhhh I don't know what to do.

Thanks for the new sound test also.

Will there be new sound test or information before the 17th of was that the final news?

I'd just get the ARRAY now dude, I mean, you have to get some mod when you purchase the case, (I think.. I can't remember.) and whichever  module you get now,ARRAY or some other one,  I can't imagine it's going to see much use when/if the COMBO gets released, so what's it matter?
I'm sure you could probably sell the ARRAY module too someone if/when a COMBO does come out.

I do already have 3 modules in my cart excluding Array. And I was even considering 2 different colors for Array, as it is my favorite with Peaks.
But with the other Modules I would still use them from time to time, but I would never use "regular" Array if there is a Circle+Array module later.

Sure I can always try to sell it, but if I can avoid this trouble, I'd prefer of course. I would rather spend it on an extra PCB or plate for example.
Sadly I don't have an infinite budget :(

Aesthetic and design wise, this board is really innovative. I loooove the modular concept, and I wish more boards would embrace this (even though on a manufacturing level, that increases cost by a lot).

But watching the sound tests released + JYMV's review, it sounds fairly underwhelming and almost mushy hollow.

Hope this is something that can be address considering how expensive this board is.

The JYMV video you mentioned is the Grid 600 I believe, which is quite different to the 650, considering it's a different mounting style (tray mount vs gasket).

However, I completely agree about the sound tests (the one with the ink black switches in particular sound very mushy and unsatisfying). I'm hoping that it's the mic quality rather than the board itself.

Grid, are you able to post more sound test videos (perhaps with a different mic if possible) to hopefully ease our concerns?

Thanks again.

That a very good question. We do have some E-white module prototypes and most of them fit in just fine. We will visit our vendors next week. We will revise this combination. Maybe we will be able to do that in the future.

Thanks for your feedback. Some said we need to put a gaming or table pad under the keyboard during the sound tests. We should do that in the next video. We will also include some PORON for free. You can put them between the PCB and plate, and that should make some improvement.

The Ink Black V2 we have were not lubed properly and you can hear the scratch sound of the springs. It is our fault.
We do want to make a demo for FLASH so we still decided to release the video.
We will consider upgrading our recording devices as well. Wondering if you have any suggestions?

Many thanks

Awesome news !
Crossing my fingers that there are no technical difficulties for the Circle+Array module.

I agree the Black Ink video probably wasn't the best demonstration of the potential of this board.
As you suggested, I would love to see a video with Holy Pandas with Array, and also some JWK's like Alpacas for example.

But there are only 3/4 days left on the GB so it might be difficult to release in time.

I am assuming the 4mm plate makes it very stiff? I couldn't tell the difference in sound on the black Ink, but on the Tealios I prefered the 1.5mm plate.

Thinking of holding off on this round of the groupbuy after that last sound test.  I normally love Black Ink V2's, but the recent sound test was very mushy.  Glad to hear that it seems that they were over lubed.  Altho if a larger full size grid comes out in the future I'd be mad at myself for not waiting for that.

Eh, 65% is perfect for me, especially since most key sets screw up their f-row by by making the middle cluster the same color as the alphas, looks bad man.
Now. if they ever come out with one with an HHKB layout... Then i'd be upset!

The 4mm plate feel stiffer but it can be adjusted by using soft silicon gaskets or just have them removed. We will provide 3mm ANSI felt pad for everyone purchase the 1.5mm plate.

Can I please make one small amendment to my order? I just want to change the color of module ARRAY from Navy to Silver. I've emailed zFrontier about it but we are having some communication issues due to language barrier. They sound like they are saying they've put in the request but I don't know what's actually happening, and I've asked for someone to just let me know if/when my order has been amended, but they keep quoting this sentence from their first reply:

"Hi ,I have marked your request which can not been seen from your sides while my colleague will"

I don't understand what this means. There is no change in price or module type, just color choice. So I would expect it to be fairly simple but I don't know how exactly how this works on your/zFrontier's end.

Just to be sure I understood correctly.

-Module 10 Circle GB will be happening for sure around March. And hopefully some Circle "combo" modules also at the same time.
Is that correct?

-And now you just mentionned some of the current modules 1-9 will still be available for purchase during the March Circle GB.
Do you already know which ones would be returning?

I apologize for all my questions, but with the delay of module 10 and uncertainty of the combo modules it's a bit difficult to plan the correct purchases.
I will be getting 3 Peaks modules and 1 Flash for sure, but if regular Array will be back in March I would prefer to wait and see if circle-array combo will be available.

Looking forward to the sound test video that should hopefully be available by tomorrow.

Thank you very much.

It was very difficult to choose, but I finally managed to place my order.

I think I did the right choice with my modules ... hopefully !

See you in March for Circle combo GB, fingers crossed, I count on you Grid.

ps: Did you guys have to pay for shipping? I thought zFrontier had free shipping over 100$ and my order was over 700$, and I had to pay a pretty extra on top for shipping :(
Yeah, asked them about it and they said the Grid GB was an exception for their shipping policy. I hoped to shave a few dollars off shipping too.

@gridishere

It should be fairly simple. I am sorry that happened. Can you E-mail me, gridishere@gmail.com ? Please use the E-mail address you used for ordering.

I will make the note for you, just mention that you want to change your ARRAY from Navy to Silver. Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks for understanding and support!

Best,
grid

Thanks very much, I'll send you an email now.

@gridishere did you get my email the other day? Just need to check because I didn't receive a reply.

So glad that this is happening! I had to decide so hard not to opt in for the Array and now I know there will be one with Circle! GB Joined and looking forward to updates and production. Is geekhack and instagram the best place to follow for updates? No discord?

do you have any recommendations for a DIY battery if Flash+keyboard is build for BLE?`

do I need a 3.7V Li-Ion or a Li-Ion Polymer battery?
