There's another branch that's trying to stop the bleeding.

Most of the immediate deficit problems are the bad economy (a bipartisan effort, to the extent it was politically driven), and Bush-era Policies.  The longterm issue is pretty much exclusively a healthcare issue.

This is pretty offtopic, though, isn't it?  Man, customs ...

I have a friend that visits Cuba every year.  If I smoked I'd have her smuggle in cigars.

I do have a painting though...

That's nice.  Just needs a good amount of rum.

Your friend either doesn't live in the U.S., or carries other than a U.S. Passport, or both!

I think iMav should lock this thread so we don't get overly excited to see a new post in here, only to be disappointed that jerk ashort was trying to derail the topic with mentions of Cuba and rum.

So the gigantic brains at US Customs are now going to attempt to figure out whether or not a few boxes of Poker keyboards are bad for the US and they'll let you know?

It boils down to the FCC certification issue.

Question: While the crack agents of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security, have been taking measures against the potential threat posed to the United States by my keyboard and those of my fellow group buyers, what life changes have I gone through?

(a) Gotten a haircut.
(b) Lost five pounds.
(c) Moved to another country.
(d) All of the above.

Answer: The answer is (d)! All of the above! Yes, really!

Love it!

The solution to this problem should have been, "The dogs don't smell cocaine, pot, gunpowder or C4, this shipment is released!"

Why Customs feels the need to be SO cozy with the FCC is far beyond me.  I can fabricate way too many things from parts I get at radio shack that would give the FCC fits.

Was such a fun time hanging out in the barren customs office with iMav.  There were two nice wooden, pew-like benches to sit on.  It's comforting that all the custom's officers carry weapons and are housed behind bullet-proof glass, except when they can't understand what you're saying or you can't understand them and they poke through the door and speak to you face to face, thereby negating any safety measures the locked doors and glass are supposed to provide. I don't have a clue as to why they all need weapons.  They're paper-pushers with weapons training.

Here's hoping we'll be getting a bunch of keyboards on our doorstep soon!

Dang, that reminds me ... I got the Poker partly due to its portability, with the thought to use it on trips. Imagine the scene:

This is your captain speaking, someone is operating a rogue electronic device, possibly a KBC Poker, causing interference with the aircraft controls. Crew, please check with passengers. Over.

Ha!  you're right.  Mine does too.  That is hilarious.  According to the spec though, not all items approved by the FCC require an FCC ID.  God knows who decides that though...

Since when does a hard-wired device with no transmitter disrupt communication and disturb airplane traffic?  Have our keyboards been replaced by well placed Chinese communications jammers that will be spread to key locations in parent's basements across the nation? Maybe if all our KBC's are plugged in simultaneously it will create a network of portals that connects us to China which would result in a billion or so chinamen flooding our streets and eating all our McDonalds!  Customs is only thinking of the people... that or they are still holding out for a bribe.

One of my customers is a DoD Supplier that wouldn't allow Lenovo laptops in the building.  I suspect it's because Lenovo is a Chinese company.  We had engineers use that as a very convenient excuse to get new Macbooks on the company dime (aren't those made in China too?).  I don't blame them, I would have done the same thing!

It does make me wonder about purchasing things from China that connect via USB, and might also possibly install keyloggers via a USB drive that no one bargained for.

iMav's been on that front, ask him how relentless the Chinese are (in general - official gov't sponsored or not) in attacking our electronic frontier.  At least on the network side, firewalls and IDS/IPS are NOT optional.  Get a few hundred keyboards into the country with key loggers on them that can send results over the internet via spyware and imagine the possibilities.

Any device with long enough traces on the PCB using radio-frequency signalling is a transmitter whether or not that is the designed function of the device.  The matrix scanning portion of a KB is a possible culprit for unintentional radio leakage... but damned unlikely.  Still have to test tho because the FCC wants the licensing fees.

Now the question is...  Did iMav have access to the net and was that the deciding factor in getting it done in a reasonable amount of time?  It's stupid that they required his physical presence in order for him to supply documentation such as that FCC approval.  Did they need to open the pallet/case/box to check them out?  Is that why they needed you to watch over their shoulder?

The US gov. is amazing at choosing the absolute least efficient way to do business.
