[IC] GMK Regal | Group Buy Live
« on: Tue, 29 March 2022, 00:12:52 »
Group Buy Thread Here

GMK Regal

Interest Check Form

Concept:

I really liked Phantom, however I wasn't absolutely sold on the yellow, I felt like it just prevented me from matching it with whatever I wanted and it wasn't as clean as I liked, in addition the set is kind of old and the kitting's not quite there in my opinion, thus goes my epic journey to get a set that's a more refined Phantom and also slap in some relegendables

GROUP BUY JULY 1

Colours:

Pantone 2695 Purple
RAL9016 Traffic White

Note, I have seen RAL sample for 9016 and I have the swatch for Pantone 2695 on hand, however my camera/photography skills are bad, I've ordered a RAL sample as well as the plastic pantone chips for 2695 and I'll get some photographs of those when they arrive and do colour matching against those.

Kits:

Base Kit:

Novelties Kit:

Extension Kit:

Relegendables Kit:

HIBI cap

Filigree Deskmat
For some reason imgur won't upload this as a .png so it has to be atttached here, I don't know why but it is what it is.
286604-0

Lion Deskmat

Update 05-04-2022: I've removed the novelties from the base and split them out into their own kit, taking a look at the GMK quotes it's going to add some cost for getting novelties as well as the base kit but most people don't seem to want the novelties so it is what it is.

Update 07-04-2022: Added 1.25 u R3 tab and 1.5u R3 enter for the 40s people.

Vendors:
OCE/Australia: Daily Clack
Europe: MyKeyboard EU
SEA: iLumkb
NA: Mechs & Co
CA: DeskHero
CN: Zfrontier
KR: GEONWORKS

Collaborations:

Additional Renders:
More may be to come

Constellation by AEBoards

Endash by FinderWorks

Praxis by Ivery Boards

Praxis by Ivery Boards

Wombat by Impulse Boards

Wombat by Impulse Boards

Note, for wombat, I've got the physical boards being finished at a plater, so expect an interest check on that one soon.

UPDATE: 25-05-2022
  • Updated novelty renders to use accepted art from GMK
  • Added collaborations
  • Added Deskmats
  • Updated all kits to latest version
  • There is a hibi cap just waiting on renders, that has also been confirmed for manufacturability

Consider my interest checked.

Thoughts on moving the novs to a child kit to cut down potential base price?

Incoming 200 dollar base kit.

Not a fan of your kitting, but I can see why some may appreciate it.

Why aren’t you using a stock color for the white??

I thought about it, then I thought, I don't really want to do that.

I looked at the stock whites and they weren't quite what I wanted.

Some thoughts on kitting so no one is really giving suggestions:

  • Move novelties to a child kit!
  • You don't need both icon and 'super' 1u and 1.25u win keys. Pick one.
  • Move 1.5u super and and 1.75u backspace to an extension kit.
  • Split macro and space bar kits into separate child kits instead of 1 giant extension kit.
  • Remove mini bars from base kit and create a mini bar child kit in either white or purple. 1u mini bars need to go here to.
  • Make standalone white accent bar kit sans 1u bars.
  • (Personal preference) Just put centered 6u space bar in the base kit.
  • Splitting numpad may help with pricing.

On second thought, it'd prob be better to do something along the lines of 6.25u and 7u accent bars, purple 6us, and purple mini bars in one space bar kit. So:

Base
Novelties
Space Bars
Macro
Extension
Relegendables

Numpad could go either way tbh. I think people usually remove it to get base kit cost down for moq reasons

Okay so I've considered this carefully, and I think I'm going to go with what I have at the moment for the following reasons

1. I like the idea that the base kit you buy it and it's compatible with pretty much everything right off the bat
2. I always use a numpad so I wouldn't want to split the numpad off, and it never actually saves any money
3. I've committed to buying out MOQ myself anyway so I really don't mind

Really? You're prepared to tie up potentially 10s of thousands for over a year to buy out moq? I don't really believe this, but good luck.

If you change your mind, there's plenty of other successful sets out there with great kitting you can take a look at.

I kinda love the enormous base kit, but I do think that the novelties should be separate, or massively cut down.

Also, if you're putting 2x3U bars in base, I'd say it's probably worth putting a single 1U bar in there too.

Initially I thought going for a custom white was probably not the best idea, but having looked at it I see that there isn't really a similar white in GMKs stock colours. To me it looks like a slightly dimmer WS1, but not edging into cream like CP?

Sticking with full size, Alice, uk ISO and some 40s support is good enough for most people's need for compatibility. Any potential saving for having a base kit this large is lost when you're forced to set a very low moq.

you say you'll commit to buyout, but how do people (customers and vendors) know that will actually happen? do you really wanna drop 50k into this project to buyout at 250 moq if this set sells like 10?

lots of yellow flags in this IC... it doesn't seem like you are keen on listening to the feedback being offered.  GL tho

i like the colours, but i do agree the kitting isn't exactly the best.

i personally think the novelties should be moved to a separate kit. with probably some of them being removed. i don't think someone is likely to use all the r1 keys on their board at once. and all the r4 keys only like 4 can be used at once. id suggest keeping the crown and the lion tiger.

moving to the base kit. you have 2x r4 Fn keys. i don't think this is needed. also the amount of keys to use for windows or supers is kinda extreme you could cut it back a bit. i don't know what the extra r2 backspace key is for as it doesn't have a size on it.

but most importantly your missing the hang bag caps lock and stepped handbag capslock. which  is the best caps lock by far.

Base kit is ginormous, will be prohibitively priced. The 40s support you mentioned is nonexistent. You have the backspace key for one specific size of 40% and *nothing* else. Basic 40s support (called 3 key) is r2 1.75u (Backspace), r3 1.25u (Tab), r3 1.5u (Enter). That’s bare minimum to make them shut up. I don’t have any opinions on the set itself, that’s why I didn’t say any. The kitting is just not going to work and this will be another failed GMK GB. It needs a lot more work put into optimizing the kits to be realistic for current pricing:wait times.

Oh, I completely missed the duplicate fn. Yeah this can be removed too.

What's your reasoning behind removing stepped caps from base, but leaving stepped control? I would leave stepped caps and maybe move stepped control to extension along with more complete 40s support.

I would love a massive base kit like this as I end up always buying base+extension kit anyway but I feel you would like to sell some of these as you'll see people worry about kits at high prices.

Love seeing 1.5 Supers (need 2 1u alts though) and stepped control etc.
May need to organise space bars a little as may need 1.25u and 1u with the Alice bars for split space boards.

You may want to check Zambumon's kitting with his latest kits with base + macro-extension.

I like two R4 fn keys

Handbag caps I dislike

Windows/supers I was only going to have windows keys but then the linux people I know complained so it has both now.

The second backspace is there for minivan support and good catch I didn't notice I forgot to label it 1.75u

The potential price of that base kit plus GMK's current lead times put me off from this entirely.  I'm willing to eat my words if it turns out to be reasonable though.

And you're dead set on buying out MOQ before getting any pricing info? There's too many risks here atm.

Oh I already have the quote and it's within budget.

If you already have quotes what do you plan on pricing this base kit at?

Currently waiting on lead vendor to provide an update on that, I can buy it out at wholesale though but I'm not allowed to share that information, not cheap though.

You have the quote, you know it's "within budget," but you need to wait on your lead vendor to provide an update on the pricing? You can't even ballpark it? If you can buy it out wholesale, then why are you making an IC? Is your plan to buy out this set yourself, or to run a successful GB and make MOQ naturally? My vision has turned red due to the blinding light of so many red flags, and for that reason I'm out.

if you're gonna force novelties in the base kit, i think i would rather have the option for 1u R4 novelties than the windows icon keys. the window keys just look too off-theme(?), it is just not very "regal"

I really dig the colors. I also agree with the criticisms about the base kit mentioned above. glwic

Very nice! Love the colors. I do agree though, consolidate some of the child kits at the least. MOQ will be 100 kits minimum on each of those!

What do you mean "within budget"? I'm assuming your budget? If you really wanted to make a set that's only for you, sure go ahead. But to call this an IC and disregard a lot of people's main concerns is not an IC at all but just a flex that you have a lot of money.

Just to echo everyone else, the least you can do is separate out the novelties. Not everyone likes novelties or will even use them, and personally this set's novelties are meh to me. I mean if you're going to be hitting MOQ by yourself, do you personally need that many novelties to yourself?

Yea... so this isn't an IC, just buy out MOQ and then sell in stock when GMK delivers to you, kthxbye.

This^ The only reason people do groupbuys is to be able to fund the project, which you can apparently. It would also sell a lot more if it was in stock, especially if it rivals the “extras” pricing of other vendors. This all just rubs me the wrong way.  You added supers bc Linux people you know complained, yet dozens of people are asking to have a separate novelties kit and crickets.

Personally I'd move the novs to a separate kit because I hate novelty AND fun, other than that this set looks very good. Maybe remove what 40 support there is because I also hate 40% users with a burning passion.
