Alternative key caps for Ducky Shine?
« on: Mon, 02 January 2012, 06:17:46 »
Just ordered this, and it will be my first foray into mechanical keyboards. Only downfall is that none of these neat custom key caps work with this keyboard's backlighting.

So are there any key caps with a transparent layer to allow the backlight to shine through? Any pics of videos of what it looks like with regular key caps?

I am actually wondering the same thing here.  My shine just came in a couple weeks ago (after being lost in the mail for over 2 months >.<) and I am interested in a bunch of custom keys (even at hefty prices if need be) to make this thing more 'mine.'

one of the many reasons I don't bother with backlit boards.

This seems to be the general consensus.  But with everyone not wanting them it leads the market further away from custom key caps.  I have a rosewill rk-9000 as well but I really like the backlighting of my shine and the feel of MX-red switches.

I am just looking for wasd, esc, and delete mostly.  The keyboard came with red caps for wasd but I am just looking for alternate colors.

Hopefully in the future this will be an option, but for now I guess I'll manage with the black and red with blue backlighting.

Actually, most white color ABS keycaps should be translucent enough for decent BL effect...

I imagine translucent POM would be better, I wonder if you can find it in blue?

1. How do POM keycaps compare with doubleshot ABS and PBT keycaps.
2. Where can I buy POM keycaps?

Only doubleshot from Cherry are worth it.
PBT is greatly overrated.
POM are underrated even thought POM is used to make motorcycle protectors/sliders.
If POM is good enough to protector a 200kg motorcycle from the tarmac, it's good enough for me.

POM can only be harvested from Cherry and Noppoos.

1: may be true, though I really like WYSE thick.
2: It's a preference, but I think PBT is amazing
3: I need to get some POM, but that's a logical fallacy (I mean seriously: just 'cause they use it for that, doesn't mean it'll work for keyboards. Just 'cause I can use water to protect my hand from boiling lead, doesn't mean I should put it on my keyboard, to protect it, too.)

That said, I think you'd be happy with POM.

You can buy blank clear from signature plastics. Current stock sheet says they have them in most rows 1unit at least, not sure what price they might want them...
