Title: Bud/Honeywell Hall Effect Keypads (~30)
Post by: HaaTa on Fri, 13 May 2011, 11:09:34
OMG!! NIB Hall Effect Keypads

Yes!, I've come across a shipment of NIB Bud/Honey Hall Effect Keypads, and am prepared to let most of them go to GeekHackers in the need :P.
These keypads were used in the Aerospace industry. And have been sitting around, doing nothing for the last 10-15 years brand new in their boxes.

In their current state, they are excellent collector's items. HOWEVER, not too long ago, I managed to get these Hall Effect Switches working over USB with the Teensy++ 2.0, not to mention that the keypad itself, fully supports NKRO.

This is a very limited shipment, and once they're gone, you probably won't see NIB Hall Effect Keyboards from Honeywell ever again...as they stopped manufacturing keyboards, and keyboard parts in the mid 1990's.

Keycaps

Did I mention that the keycaps are top notch cupped doubleshots?

Switches

Quoting Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor), "A Hall effect sensor is a transducer that varies its output voltage in response to changes in magnetic field. Hall sensors are used for proximity switching, positioning, speed detection, and current sensing applications."
In layman's terms, there is no switch contact and no metal to corrode. Just a magnet and a magnetic field detector. And thus this (MicroSwitch) Hall Effect Sensor has virtually no electrical point of failure (The first point of failure will probably be the spring holding up the keyswitch...).

I even managed to get some of the specification information directly out of Honeywell on the keypads. Unfortunately, this was all they had left in terms of documentation (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B4Wyz4bY7XjLNTdiMjFkNjEtMWI1Yi00YWQ3LTk3ZDctMzkxOTAzY2VjOTdj&hl=en).

Oh, nearly forgot, I have never seen switches more robustly designed than these ones in terms of the thickness of plastic used.

How Much?
Now, I understand, that not all GeekHackers are of soldering proficiency, and so I'll be offering two different version of the Bud/Honeywell Aerospace Keypads:
Yet, for those with an soldering proficiency, and access to Teensy's, I will be posting the full documentation and source code, for anyone to setup themselves (I just need to clean up what I currently have).
Limit 2 per person.

The custom order, also includes any layout configurations you want (such as hardware layout switching), for no additional charge. I will make the modifications as per your specifications (though I'll factor in the material and time costs into the final price).

Shipping
Shipping is on a case per case basis, and I will ship within another box if desired (the boxes are quite durable, and well packed though). And I will ship anywhere in the world Canadian couriers will ship to.

When will they Ship?
The un-customized keypads, can ship almost immediately. Unfortunately, the customized versions require me to order in Teensy++ 2.0's, and thus may take a month to complete the order (depending on how well my midterms go this summer :P).

Payment Accepted
Paypal is preferred. Though, other forms of payment can be negotiated.
OR
Very cool, and interesting keyboards/keypads/switches

How to Order
Send me a PM, with the following:
And I will get back to you asap.

Act fast, don't let this opportunity to own a functional piece of keyboarding history.

You know you want one :D.

If you like MX Blacks, these have a much smoother actuation, as the sliders are more robust and the springs are secured in a better way.

Thank you! Interested? I have one NIB (unopened), in California (San Jose) still, though you'd have to wait until September until I could ship it.

What are the case dimensions?
14.5 cm x 6 cm x 18.5 cm approximately.
There's lots of extra space inside of the case.

And remember, I accept TRADES for payment as well (we can work out the worth and such, provided I want it :P).

dag, if it wasn't so much to mod the thing to work on a PC i'd get the thing jus for kicks
Title: Bud/Honeywell Hall Effect Keypads (~30)
Post by: HaaTa on Wed, 18 May 2011, 10:26:59
I don't mind out-lining the what it takes for the mod (should be cheaper if you do it your self, my time is extremely limited atm, and thus a bit expensive). I'll also be trying to make it a bit more of a finished product (more components).

At minimum, to do the mod. You'll need:

Just separate the IDE cable lines, strip them a bit, and solder them (specific ones...) to the Teensy.
An easier method, may be to use the large cable that comes with the original converter (completely useless as it doesn't factor in all of the keys). And have the Teensy outside of the box (or inside, as there is enough room).

Also, Teensy 2.0's are now available, so the controller version should go down in price a bit. Unfortunately, I haven't secured all of my supplies to build them yet, so I can't quote exact prices yet.

My current plan is to do 10 \w controller versions, unless demand increases. I'll have some time this weekend to order all of the pieces I need.

Ordering Teensy's, still have 1 more custom version.

Any more future orders of the custom version will be at least $110 (maybe more).

Heh, don't have any US nickels on me atm.

Canadian Quarters will have to do (4.4g each). 19 (~83g) of them for the switch to be fully pressed. And about 16 (~70g) to actuate (I don't have my converter hooked up atm, as my only Teensy is doing something else currently, and the rest are in the mail...).

Ugh, problem all. PJRC is refusing to sell me the Teensy's (they don't like my credit card, among the reasons).

I'm working on an alternative. I'll try to get the shipping fees to all who have ordered just the keypad.

Sorry, anyone waiting (at least I haven't collected money yet). I should be able to send out the non-controller versions this week (I'll avoid Canada Post...as per the current strike).

The controller versions are going to have to wait, PJRC are being difficult (looking like September when I get back to California, and actually have a lab to use).

Still a bunch left...

I'm moving back to California until January soon, so if you want your orders before then, let me know asap (before August 15th), with your address so I can give you the total cost with shipping.
I respond relatively quickly to PMs.

If you've placed an order earlier for the controller version, I'll be getting them out to people in September (I have a list, don't worry) sometime.
And as soon as I finish up those orders, I'll put together a controller/wiring guide.

All of the non-controller ones have been shipped out (except for a recent inquiry by flashstar).

I've been curious- are the blank keys around the numbers mapped to normal tenkey functions in the hardware? Are they programmable or recognized by your computer? It's hard to tell from the documentation.

Just wanted to comment to say what an amazing find. I had read about Hall Effect sensors and their impressive build and never thought I'd ever find someone actually selling them. Unfortunately, I have no need (excuse) to buy one of these, though I think it'd be so cool to have one. Anyway, awesome post.

Deadline reached for getting NIB ones shipped out before January. Thanks all who wanted their's in January anyways.

There are still 4 modified versions left (at which point I can think about price discounts). You still have time, I'll be ordering the Teensys beginning of September sometime. Payment will be due when I'm ready to ship, so all you have to do is reserve one.

Sorry, been busy all.

I have the Teensy's, and the parts needed. Just need to solder them up, and do some firmware updates (actually my first order has already been shipped to trievalot :D).

Anyways, its someone's lucky day, the first person to chime in, gets first dibs on a USB Hall Effect keypad (even if you've already ordered and I told you to wait).

The price is $100 per keypad (discount if you don't need a USB Mini-B cable included).

An as an update, I have the pics ready for the USB mod documentation, I just have to do a write-up (already have pinout tables ready as well). Though I want to add a bunch of features to the firmware (like the ability to re-flash it without having to open up the case).

I'm now back in Canada, and yes I still have keypads left :D.
I've PM'd anyone who expressed interest earlier (and I told them wait till I returned from California). If I didn't, and you did express interest, let me know.

Price for the non-controller version is still $40. If you already asked for a controller version, I'll be able to discount to $90, otherwise it'll be full price as I'll have to order more Teensy's ($110 each, unless interest is high enough).
I do have some controllers I made in California already, but once those run out, I'll have to wait until my lab is fully put together again (within the next few weeks).

Title: Bud/Honeywell Hall Effect Keypads (~30)
Post by: HaaTa on Wed, 04 April 2012, 08:30:00
Hmm, switch feel.

Well, they are linear. So start by thinking of say MX Black, as the force required is about the same, perhaps a bit less.
When you bottom out, it's the slider hitting the bottom, not the keycap. And since the slider is rather large, the bottom out sound is rather deep, more like a thud. The sound when the slider returns to the normal position is actually louder (sorta reminiscent of Topre).
The slider itself is much smoother than MX Blacks (or any Cherry switch).
Also, since there is no metal contact (that can be vaguely felt on MX linear switches), you have to memorize where to stop, in order not to bottom out.

Sorry, I was supposed to get email notifications on changes to this thread...BUT SOMEHOW THEY WERE DISABLED, not acceptable (\end_rage)...

Anyways, very cool bdc1987. Any details you'd care to spare about the factory?

And, if people were wondering, I DO, have some more of the keypads. I still need to do a count of my inventory (in storage atm), but I believe there are enough for all of the request so far.
If I have NOT respond to your PM, I am sorry, email notifications were also turned off there (*grumble*). Please send me another PM, I should respond within the day. Otherwise PM me on IRC, and barring me doing social things like drinking to my sorrows that the email notifications were turned off, I should respond within a few hours..

If you can solder, I highly recommend doing it yourself. It saves me time, and is pretty easy.

Well now the factor still makes a lot of switches, I don't know what all of them go to but I do know we make things for Boeing, Bell Helicopter, the military, Caterpillar, and many others I don't know the names of. I wish I could afford one of these I think it would be cool to have a piece of history from the place I work. Well I could probably afford just the keypad but not one that would be functional with todays computers without the mods you were able to do.
Title: Re: Bud/Honeywell Hall Effect Keypads (~30)

All you need is a soldering iron and a Teensy. The mod itself is quite easy, it's not absolute beginner soldering, but it's pretty close.

I price the mod a bit high as I want to encourage people to do the mod themselves (saves me time, and is a good intro to working with a Teensy).

All you need is a soldering iron and a Teensy. The mod itself is quite easy, it's not absolute beginner soldering, but it's pretty close.

I price the mod a bit high as I want to encourage people to do the mod themselves (saves me time, and is a good intro to working with a Teensy).
The main reason I didn't want one is because I wanted a working one, and the mod price was too high. I'm well acquainted with soldering, but what code does the teensy run? Can you PM me a link to it?

I'm very interested in this if I can DIY a controller. I have the teensy, etc.

My code needs a quick sanity check, but it's the same code I use to make all my USB converters/controllers. I've been working on it since early 2011.

https://gitorious.org/kiibohd-controller (https://gitorious.org/kiibohd-controller)

Also, I recently added Teensy 3.0 support to my codebase (though only 1 Scan module is fully supported right now).

talk about a blast from the past. These are really cool but, as much as I'd love to have one for the collection, it's probably another thing that will just clutter up the house and never get used/appreciated.

GLWS, i'm sure you won't have an issue moving them all tout suite.

FYI all. The keypads are virtually sold out. A few reserved keypads have not been paid for yet, but I am expecting payment soonish.

Those who have PM'd me already have priority in the cancellation queue.

So, I have two keypads left, and the people who I had them reserved for haven't responded back...
Gave you guys enough time. If you can organize payment before the other 2 in line...one is yours.

4LI4Z and salmo, I'll be PM'ing you about details.

And to all, the keypads are now sold out.

Thanks all, for sustaining this really long sale :P

I may have one more keypad up for grabs eventually (with a controller), but I'll probably use it for a contest or something.

I may be able to make a controller for you (keypad), dunno if I can get to it before I fly to Japan for my bike trip though.

As for the Chinese IBM, well gotta wait until at least September when I'm back in California.

Do you feel comfortable biking more than 3000 km? :P
Though, it'll be pretty chill, since my trip is about 90 days long.
