[IC] Muon - Wireless Numpad - Vendor & Prototype update
« on: Wed, 25 May 2022, 19:15:34 »

Hello, Geekhack! This is the Muon, a simple, hotswap, multi-layout wireless numpad made in collaboration with Quark.Works.
We are also proud to announce that we will now work with 19.99 Studio!

Specs

  • PCB: QS-10 Hotswap multi-layout PCB by Quark.Works, Bluetooth with nRF52840 powered by ZMK. And Unified Daughterboard
  • Battery: Slot for a 1000 mAh battery (up to 6 months of use according to ZMK’s profiler!)
  • Mount: Top Mount
  • Materials: 6063 Aluminum (Top, Bottom, Plate) and Brass (Badge)
  • Angle: 8 degrees

Kit Includes

  • Top case
  • Bottom case
  • Brass badge
  • Aluminum plate
  • QS-10 Bluetooth PCB
  • Unified Daughterboard
  • Rubber feet
  • Carrying case
  • All necessary hardware for assembly

GB Details

The Moun will be sold on our store 1999.design(soon). It will be an unlimited GB with a softcap. Expected to run on Q1-Q2 2023.

Price is to be defined as we are finalizing the cost details: MOQ, cost of carrying cases, and shipping.

The colors, for now, are black, white and silver and we'll be adding more based on the IC results (please fill out the form).

First prototype

More

First (silver) second (white) and final (black) prototypes!

All of them are working prototypes, but each of them have slight differences as the model was improved and issues were fixed.

List of changes
More

  • All tolerances were adjusted from the first prototype
  • A couple of cuts were added on the top case to easily align the plate
  • The badge now sits flush after tolerances were fixed and tightened
  • The bottom was thickened to allow us to make a deeper cutout for the battery and its connector
  • Interferences with hotswap sockets were fixed

The main change that needed to be made, and the most noticeable one, was the increase of area on the bottom.
This change was made because the first two prototypes would wobble a little if pressed hard enough on the top corners.

Next on the list:
  • Define all colors that will be offered
  • Streamer Build
  • Pricing
  • Launch online store
  • Group Buy date

Q&A

More
Why is there a 2u badge on something this small? Why not a full row or just discard it?
Sadly, we ran out of space because of the bluetooth module! So the solution we came up with was adding a badge.

Does it have VIA/VIAL
No. ZMK doesn’t have a live remapper, so you’d have to recompile the firmware to make changes. If you’d wish to have a wired PCB version with VIA/VIAL compatibility, please say so in the IC Form.

How long does the battery last?
According to the profiler we can expect 6 (±2) months of battery life.

How is reception in the aluminum case?
After many months of testing, we concluded that the PC badge won't be needed, we had an amazing reception while keeping the antenna at about 10-30 inches apart from the Muon.

Where/When/How can I buy it?
Our site, 1999.Design will be launched when we approach the GB. More details will be available as we approach the date!

What colors are going to be available?
We only have the black/silver and silver/black combo in mind, but we'll obviously do more colors! Please help us decide by filling the IC form!

Can I change the badge? Will custom ones be available later?
We’d love to have some collaborations and some community-voted designs! More details to come but for now, please help us decide by filling the IC form.

Psyched for this. Been waiting for a premium but not atrociously priced wireless numpad for a while. Hoping this is it!

Would love if you could add a reversed layout for left handed use.
Badge looks nice and would love if we could make custom ones.

Not dead at all! We are working on the carrying case at the moment. I know people want an estimated price but it will obviously be significantly influenced by the MOQ which is something we have to establish based on this latest update.

I love the design and concept. would love to use it as a little macro pad that I can turn on and off when I need

but I cant help but worry about how signal will be since it looks like an all alu case and BT and Alu don't get along

how did you either fix or get around that issue?

We were planning on using a PC badge to improve the signal, but after many months of using it on different devices with the brass badge, we concluded that it wouldn't be necessary.
If you refer to the Q&A, we mentioned that the best range for its usage is about 10-30 inches apart from the antenna.

Gladd to hear that it's not dead. If I may be honest I don't think every single keyboard needs carrying case. That became a standard, almost every keboard comes with case nowadays. But it makes no sense to me. I know they are nice but to most of us are unnecesery they only keep piling on a shelf. Even if someone carries keyboard around (I still don't believe someone actually does this but ok let's assume someone does), only 1, maybe 2 at most are necesery. I'd prefer keyboard with no case and slightly lower price. This might be unpopular opinion but yeah stop this carrying case maddness. Would you consider carrying case as an extra? I'd be gladd
