Seems like nice quality stuff; functional and good-looking.

Speaking from a personal note, perhaps a handle could be fabricated on this, or maybe the next round could have them? I know a lot of people would probably toss them in a bag or what have you, but I think there would be a good contingent that might want to carry it on its own?

Thanks- yes, that is definitely something we can do if people want!  Possibly even in this round; of course I'll want to get a working prototype for photographs and inspection first.

Anyone else who wants a handle: feel free to pipe up. Note that it would probably be a small additional cost.

What's the size limit for the keyboard you put inside?

No limit, really, I can do whatever you want. SSK, full size, etc.

Custom orders are easiest if it's something I have (see my signature). If not, may need you to ship your KB to me for measurement and fitting -- but any such orders will be expedited to minimize time away from your board.

And, your board will be shipped back inside your custom case. :-)

Could I possibly take measurements myself and send them to you?

Let me ask the creator and get back to you. It is obviously ideal to have the real thing in - hand so that the fit can be 100% confirmed (these are actually tougher to make and fit than they look),  but I also understand that shipping your own board away sucks. I will discuss and reply no later than tomorrow.

...unless of course the custom order riot talked about was his JD40...then I can piggyback off of that ;D

OK guys,

We can do custom orders with self-taken measurements. Will do it by building a foamboard dummy based on your dimensions, so make damn sure they are accurate.

Here is what I'll need:

The last two measurements are especially important, because the cases are slightly trapezoidal. Measurements in metric system appreciated  ;)

Will update OP and PM everyone who has PMed me.

Big thanks to riotonthebay for the first order!

Some additional updates:

- $5.00 surcharge if you're sending in measurements, to cover the time/cost of creating the mockup.
- Photo of handle option ($8) coming soon. Will look something like this: http://www.vshopu.com/item/0342-1512/0342-1512_01.jpg

I'm super excited for it :). I lug my keyboards around a lot but have started leaving whatever sits in my Hammer case at home since it's heavy and I'm afraid of hurting it. This is a small price to pay for a made-to-fit case that will keep everything safe.

Thanks for offering such a cool service!

They save even more space by eliminating extra pockets -- there is just enough extra room at the end of the case to place a neatly-folded mini-USB cable.

I thought I saw your kb with the hammer case up for sale...did you decide to keep it?
Anyway, intelli, thanks for allowing custom measurements! As soon as I get my JD40, I'll definitely be placing an order for that (jdcarpe still has to build it ).

This first batch is just black synthetic, but I can hook you up with a custom material for a small extra charge (should be in the neighborhood of $10-20 for most materials). PM me what you are looking for and I will give you a quote.

Like this (http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/189) or this (http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/156)?

I would like a black one for my Leopold FC660M with red contrast stitching.

Black would most likely be the way I go but also as JaccoW stated the contrast stitching is something I'd like as well. I'll definitely be getting back to you for my Poker II. According to your location I'll be buying/supporting local  :thumb:

PM Sent.   Would like something other than velcro closure if that's possible.    Zipper, button snaps etc...   Just don't trust velcro for frequent use on heavier items.   Would like red/grey KMAC color if possible, and a handle on the top to allow easy in/out of a backpack.   Thx,

skc

OK, update: We are going to limit the first batch to 10 orders instead of 15 because we're getting a lot of special customization requests. We want to make sure everything is on time and not rushed.

First round orders are CLOSED!

The second round will start as soon as we get all of these shipped, which will be within 30 days or less. We're also going to get some units in-stock and ready for instant purchase. :)

Users with confirmed orders for round 1:

riotonthebay
Vibex
JaccoW
billnye29
xauser (2 cases)
Dreamre
esko997
skcheng (2 cases)

Some of you are waiting on various info from me - handle pictures, custom material samples, etc. Just hold tight and I'll be in touch as soon as I can!

Yo dudes.

There is no waiting list right now. In fact, for the second round, we may do things a bit differently -- will probably produce a bunch of cases -- some plain black, some really funky and awesome one-offs -- for a whole bunch of popular keyboards and then sell them as ready-to-ship items with no lead time.

there will certainly be more chances for custom orders at some point, though.

However, if you are interested, what you can do is post here and tell me what keyboard(s) you might want cases for, and we will incorporate that input when producing the next batch.

stay tuned--there will be some awesome limited edition stuff.

derrr...any chance of an ergodox version being made?

I'm thinking it would be fairly squarish with an internal divider separating the two halves.

also, how stiff are the exteriors? I'm wanting to use these to store keyboards and having the case be stiff enough so that switches aren't being actuated if there are two or three other keyboards on top.

I was about to ask a similar question. I plan on putting this I'm my backpack and it would be nice for it to sit there with other books. I don't want the topre domes to be pressed for extended periods of time.

I could always pick up the acrylic top for the HHKB and put both in the case. However if the case was hard enough on its own I wouldn't need to spend extra money which would be nice.

The cases are quite hard. The sides are made of a very, very stiff and strong foamboard. I wouldn't recommend sitting or stepping directly on these cases, but they will hold up just fine in a backpack.  Keys won't be pressed.

It looks great. But I need to wait for my fmj metal case to arrive before measuring the size.

And I've one recommendation, given people might change key caps often, the height might change a little bit with different key profiles. So you might want to include a little bit margin

Here is a really cool case for skcheng's KMAC Happy. He's getting another one like this for his KMAC 2 as well. It features button snaps, a vertical handle design that loops through the bottom of the case to support the weight of the KMAC, button snaps, a large rear pocket, and red side panels.

Everything that's done so far -- about half the initial batch -- is shipping out tomorrow or Thursday. The rest will follow shortly.  :thumb:

It shouldn't be a problem. I have been using these cases regularly for several months now, on multiple keyboards, and have had absolutely no problems.

in for round2 on a 60% case

Sorry friend, but Round 2 is done. Check back around May 22 for the next round!

Any chance an ergodox case will be amongst the "variety of styles"?

Probably not. We will need an actual Ergodox for that (too complicated a shape to do it by measurement alone), and mine is still on the way from the most recent Massdrop. It's something I absolutely want to offer, but it will be a few months.

Noooooo I missed round 2, I guess I'll wait for round 3 then.  :(

Sorry I have a question, does anyone know if the rare magnets will have any negative effects on the springs inside the switch?

Or is it far enough that shouldn't be a problem?

What are you guys' ideas for a design? I am thinking the most practical would be a two-tiered case (basically a double thickness case with a divider in the middle to separate the two halves of the Ergodox). perhaps w/ a pocket on the side for the cables.

I don't have an Ergo Dox, but I was thinking you could flip one upside down and fit the two halves together like puzzle pieces. Really large and expensive puzzle pieces.

Nice shots! :)

I like your folding over idea for the ergo-case.

One question though. Wouldn't their be a need for magnets where the "bottom" would be. Like if you're carrying the case from the handles, the "bottom" would have less support.

I might be picturing the case wrong.

It really depends on the weight of the ergodox, and the rigidity of the sides.  It could work as depicted or there may be some need for supporting material.

The sides are actually pretty thick and hard with no real give. Obviously, if you step on it, it might break the case, but under normal usage, it's surprisingly pretty solid. I requested for a bigger velco to prevent my KMAC2 from forcing the top open, but overall, it's pretty sturdy.

The fit seems pretty good and to spec, I didn't try to tip it upside down as my switches are lubed and I don't want any excess coming out of the switch. If you're worried, you can always stick a thin microfiber cloth on the bottom portion to make it a bit more snug to your liking.

Yeah, the fit should not be loose. It can appear that way from the photos, because the interior is black and it's hard to capture that with a camera, but there's padding inside that makes it nice and snug.

Also, I am discussing options for an Ergodox case w/ the artisan. More info soon!

Got mine today, too!

This is an actual case that will protect an aluminum keyboard.

When I would carry my board in other cases, I would always feel like I had to be careful not to bump into even the smallest thing.

I don't think I will have those worries with this case.

Love it. Everything nice and tight with the fit?

The fit is practically perfect.

It's almost hard to explain how it is possible for the fit to be so exact.

It slides in and out real easy. Just a minimal amount of friction.

I think the looseness of the inner fabric gently pushes against all the sides of the case. This makes it so the keyboard has less of an ability to bounce around. I tried shaking the case with the keyboard in it. It doesn't move.

Most of the other cases are designed in a way which still lets the keyboard bounce around inside.

The hard foam under the fabric is study enough where I feel like I don't have to worry as much about having the case accidentally bump into something as I'm walking with it.

I can throw this case into a backpack and not worry about it. Except if I drop it in a pool. ;)

There is just enough room at the end for a USB cable. Nice!

Received my round 2 case today! It's perfect, thanks intelli78! As other have described, case is firm, fit is right (just enough wiggle room), quality is top notch. And those rare earth magnets....

Got mine today, too!

This is an actual case that will protect an aluminum keyboard.

When I would carry my board in other cases, I would always feel like I had to be careful not to bump into even the smallest thing.

I don't think I will have those worries with this case.

Kudos intelli,

Youve really provided a great service.

Ive been using my case everyday since I got it since the first round of orders was shipped, and no problems -- keyboards have been totally protected, despite being jostled around all over the place while traveling to the office, other states for work, etc.

Well done.

this is going to be intense.

(Attachment Link)

Rigid edges and botton for the keyboard to sit on, snap buttons/magnets depicted in magenta, handles are represented in black.

extra fabric folds over the top and connects to enclose the e-dox, edox case then folds in half where the handle then meet and someone can carry it around keycaps facing out.

Such art - so fabulous.

I had a similar idea, but with the thumb section near the handles so they could be placed on the floor.  On that note, any update on the doxbox, intelli?

I've gotten rather found of 1680D.  it's durable enough for my needs and I don't find it especially abrasive (good point for me).

It's a woven nylon with a rubberized water-resistant backing. Made for outdoor applications, so it's made to hold up to the elements!

Post by: Razor Lotus on Sat, 31 May 2014, 20:15:48
I got my case today. It's just a plain black one with magnets.

It fits well, not perfect, it's a very slight bit loose but otherwise it's good enough. I suspect the reason for this is because I'm using low profile DSA keycaps.

The material is really tough though. I'm still wondering how something can be this stiff, which is really good. It's nice and tough and inside is still soft enough to keep it padded.

There's enough space at the end to keep a cable and I really like the feel of the magnets.

Overall I'd say it's a very good case and I intend to buy another one. Just make sure to check your dimensions with him first when you buy a premade one to make sure it fits nicely :)

Looking forward to the return of the custom round!

Custom orders are open again. Only taking 5 orders this time, and one has already been claimed.

If you don't want to wait for a custom order, we still have several premade cases in stock and ready to ship. See the OP. Those cases will go out next business day.

My ErgoDox has arrived and been built, so we are working on the carrying case design now and will have them available by the end of the month. Sorry for the delays on this, it's coming, I promise! :)

It showed up at my house as a surprise! Ya'll will probably see some nice action pics of it at Keycon. I'll have to play with it more to have more detailed thoughts on it but at first touch, it's nice. The end opposite the magnetic flap is a little looser than expected though.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. The other three sides are very solid. The side panel opposite of the flap seems to have a bit too much material and has play in it. None of the other sides have any play.

Also, should the flap have a hard insert too or no?

It is normal for the panel to have a little play inside the fabric because it's a separately cut piece (although we are looking at ways to improve that aspect of the cases). The flaps have soft padding instead of a hard insert. If there is too much material on the end, though, that should be addressed in the Kingsaver pattern. Shoot me a PM with a couple pics so I can pass them along to the artisan?

Very excited for this! I'll finally have something to protect my keyboards! I used to bring them to school, but I was afraid they might get damaged.

Just got mine from USPS today. I Have to echo what everyone else said, nice tight fit and sturdy construction.

The blue seems a little darker in person but I can't complain about it at all. Looks great :D

I agree  :) It is inspired by the design that Binge drew a while back:

this is going to be intense.

Well, right now we are waiting on some materials to come in so we can finish up a few cases from the last round. So we should be able to take some more in the next 1-2 weeks.  :)

what's the leadtime like?

can we reserve now?  or is it like come first serve after official 'taking orders now'?

this is fullhand compatible?

is it sized for DSA or SA profile?  do we get a choice?

f

I have been quoting 30 days for delivery, but we've been able to ship many orders within 3-4 days of payment. The next time I start taking orders, I will try to give a more precise timeframe.

It's been first-come first-serve so far, and I'll prob. do the same in a week or two when orders open up again. This is just for the sake of fairness and because it's the way we've been doing it. However, there is a good chance I'll change it to a different system in the future so just keep an eye on this thread.

Sounds good. That gives me enough time to work out what colour scheme I'm going to go for on my V60. It's a lot harder on backlit boards though :(

That would really great especially if you get smaller profile keycaps or like a tex case. You'd have a bit more space in there for the keyboard to move around but at the same time if you have a usb cable in there it'll probably keep it from moving

My case (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=56253.msg1384204#msg1384204) arrived on Friday, but I've been slammed and haven't been able to take proper photos, but I just had to share how much I love this case.

The craftsmanship is superb and I'm surprised just how sturdy the construction is. It's an extremely well made case. I packed up my daily driver (https://flic.kr/p/g2mACB) and took it home for the weekend to get a feel for what it would be like traveling with my board and was very, very pleased. Intelli78 recommended installing the handle all around the case, which was a good call on his part. The Hammer 60% case is rather heavy, but the full-length handle makes holding it very secure. Yet, at the same time, since the handle is tucked between the fabric on the sides and bottom, it still looks quite elegant.

I can't recommend these cases enough. If you're looking for a secure, solid and great looking carrying case for your keyboard, this is the one to get.

Guys, thanks so much for the great feedback! I am thrilled that you like your cases. I really do believe that these are the best cases on the market. Beats the HHKB soft case by a mile. Shockingly, no one has purchased one of our cases for a HHKB yet!

So... I have an update on the ErgoDox cases. A kind user donated some SA caps for case testing, and it turns out there is enough clearance in the current case design for SA caps. :) It is just wide enough to accommodate them without causing unwanted key presses. Here are a couple pics using various SA profiles:

It's just a matter of specialization -- it's easier and faster to focus on one type of case when possible, so we just wanted to run ErgoDox this time. Plus, these cases are really just a side project for this artisan, so there is limited bandwidth. We'll open it back up for other custom orders early next month  :)

Is there an outer solid shell and then padding inside? What are the insides padded with? I'm interested in a few.

Yep! There is a hard interior foamboard shell -- very strong -- covered with synthetic fabric and protective padding inside. (Couldn't tell you off the top of my head what material the padding is made of -- something appropriate -- I can check with the artisan if you'd like.) These cases offer way more protection than something like the HHKB soft case. They fully prevent key presses and stand up to quite a lot of abuse.

Hard to tell but how much padding are we talking about? I'm in need of a protective case for all my boards that will withstand shipping overseas for example.

Not an enormous amount inside... I would say maybe half to three quarters of a cm all around. With regard to shipping, are we talking about shipping in a normally packed box (e.g., full of packing peanuts or wadded up brown paper)? The cases will do a fantastic job protecting your board in that kind of environment, and will totally mitigate the need for a careful bubble wrap job, if that's what you're asking. There would be no issue whatsoever with that and I would be totally comfortable sending my own boards that way, including heavy metal customs. They'll easily protect against dented aluminum corners and that sort of stuff. no problem.

If you are talking about a more abusive shipping environment than that, describe it and I can give you my thoughts.

Any other users with one of the cases are welcome to chime in.

Post by: Smasher816 on Thu, 10 July 2014, 22:48:42
I just put my HHKB in the case. It is very snug, If I jostle it around the board does not move around and hit the sides - it sits firmly in place. It might be able to slide a little forward and backwards if you don't put a cable at the back but that should be no big issue. The sides are sturdy and should protect well from most abuse. I wouldn't drop it from the top of a building or anything but I would feel fine with anything that uses some care. I mean if you keyboard arrived fine from the postal service then it should be fine (if not better) with this extra level of protection on it.

This is a good assessment. I would not stomp one of these cases or sit on one with my full weight, but that should never happen. Treat it with the reasonable care you'd treat a laptop in a case, for example, and it will pay you back by handsomely protecting your keyboard.  :thumb:

Why just ergodox orders? I'm sure someone would jump on a custom order for another case. I know I'm eagerly awaiting the next round of custom orders so I can get something done for my QFR.

It's just a matter of specialization -- it's easier and faster to focus on one type of case when possible, so we just wanted to run ErgoDox this time. Plus, these cases are really just a side project for this artisan, so there is limited bandwidth. We'll open it back up for other custom orders early next month  :)

Makes sense, thanks for that. Looking forward to orders opening back up :D

OK, update: the artisan is busy until August, so no more custom/ErgoDox cases until then. In the meantime, we have 2 of the $49 Poker/HHKB cases left, as well as the pre-made cases listed in the OP.

Just put a towel in between and you will be fine. The highest problem with ironing on nylon and the like is staying in direct contact for too long.

Just chiming in, as I didn't post when I received it due to travel/work.

I picked up the HHKB/60% case and my Poker fits beautifully inside.  Not too tight that it would cause pressure to keys/etc..., but tight enough that it doesn't bounce around inside.  I'll have an HHKB this weekend to test drive in the case, too.  Don't expect differing results.

TBH - the case is better than I was expecting, kudos to intelli (and the artisan).  And dealing with intelli for the purchase/shipping was a breeze.  If you're on the fence - lean towards picking up one of these cases.  I'm much less concerned with my flights now that I have a case for my boards.

Dimensions of the QFR case? I'm considering buying/making at some point in the future a custom wood/aluminum/CF case for my QFR -- although at the point it gets there, it'll barely be a QFR anymore :P -- and I'd like to know how much space I'd have to work with were I to order one of your carrying cases.

How hard would it be to get an orange option for the side panels? I'd love a black/orange case for the 60% I'm building and putting Nostalgia keycaps on.

You'll probably be seeing an order from me soon :)

I struggled a bit to understand the difference between the "KB Paradise V60" and "KB Paradise V60 MTS" options in the top drop-down, before I realised that the latter signifies "Matias" switches. I was not even aware these are for sale already?

Hmm, well, it's hard to precisely measure inside since there is fabric and padding. But you're not going to have much space beyond the dimensions of a stock QFR. Maybe half to 3/4 a centimeter in each dimension before it gets too tight? Easiest will be if your case has the same dimensions as the stock case (obv.) -- but on the other hand, we can always work with you to make a custom case after you've got your project done. So, whatever works!

30 days is the official lead time, but it will probably be considerably sooner. These cases are just one project among many for the artisan who makes them, so there are a lot of potential variables. But absolutely no longer than 30 days. Just PM me if you need to change your shipping address :)

Nice cases! Small question: does it matter with a poker 2  whether or not you have an aluminum case on it?

Thanks!

Pokers with Tex and Hammer cases will fit in normal Poker 2 cases just fine. There's a little bit of extra play since it's a thinner combo, but not much. If it bothers you, I can make a slightly thinner case. However, a thinner case will not accommodate a stock Poker 2 very well -- it's too tight. I generally suggest going with the standard size, I think it's the best balance.

Haven't done one for FMJ etc cases yet, so couldn't give you a definitive answer for those.

Replied to you on /r/mk, here it is for the benefit of GH:

Quote
Measure your keyboard with the Pexon low-profile case: http://i.imgur.com/13keAj7.jpg
Let me know the measurements and I'll advise.

THAT SAID...  Although I've been making the slightly slimmer Tex compatible cases because people asked for them, my personal recommendation for all Poker users is the standard case. The small amount of extra space is really not a problem, and it gives you "backward compatibility" should you ever have a Poker in a stock case. Not to mention it fits HHKB and most other 60% boards too. The Tex case is a slightly tighter fit for Tex Pokers, but it's too small for a lot of those other boards. So there's a trade off.

Anyway, keep that in mind, but send me the measurements and I can tell you whether the slim case is even an option.

Edit: Will take 10-15 orders this month, depends on how quickly they come in

I have a poker with pexon case. Should I take the tex case option?

Looking at my pexon case next to the stock, it's the exact same shape, just with a shorter lip, so the overall keyboard height should be identical. You probably want the stock one.

Here is one of my favorites from the last round. Oooo...

Not sure if I mentioned that I bought a case from Inteli and he worked his butt off to make sure I received it after a shipping mishap which was entirely my fault.

Since then I took my ergodox with me a great number of places in the case, and it's been my rugged companion.  Thank you Inteli and your artisan friend :)

Just picked mine up from my apartment managers office. My gods..

It's super snug, and I might need to find a plastic cover to put over my keys so they don't rub. It's a lot sturdier than I thought it would be too. And the amount of velcro is such that I can't see it opening by accident, let alone on purpose!

The colors are also nice. Mine came out more superhero than PBT Granite, but I really like :D I might get a Captain America patch for it.

Confirmed, my Vortex case from Pexon fits perfectly into the Poker II size hard case.

Glad you like it! FYI, the material is NOT iron safe.

If anyone wants a patch in the future, let me know. Mail it to me and it can be sewn on during construction for no extra charge.

Ah good to know before I go and do something dumb! I thought I had seen mention on Reddit to put a towel in between the iron and patch? No skin off my back if I can't or shouldn't, this case is cool as it is :p I could get a Captain America charm or some other accessory to string at the handle instead.

There is a large order coming in, so it may be another month or so. However, I've put a very limited quantity of hard cases back in stock (3). If you want to snag one, you should probably go for it ASAP.

Working on another big drop, might also sell some soft cases direct in the next couple weeks. Yes we have some very interesting fabric choices coming up.

I can probably have a custom order done for you this week if you want a case now-- pm me.

I just realized I never posted my custom commissioned cases from Intelli and the awesome artisan he works with to get these made!

Got these made for my Octagon and my Lightpad! I looove them. I feel so safe transporting the pair now. The Octagon is a hulking 5lb beast!

The case was a great collaboration between myself and the artisan tossing ideas back and forth until we came up with this! Since Jukebox is the only set I plan on using for my Octagon, I wanted to theme the cases around it!

The artisan even sent a personalized note thanking me for such a fun idea, haha. I can only say that I'm flattered and super happy to have these cases!
