That's good to hear.  The only thing keeping me from ordering their Tactile Pro was the fact that it was white.  Nothing on their website yet about this...

It's on their order page:  http://matias.ca/order/index.php   There are no photos anywhere as far as I can tell, just a reference to a pre-order.

Cool - I was not too hot for the white either but with this "only run - limited crap" edition. I might fall for it. Plus it will add an Alps switch to my collection.

In what sense?  The top one, which was bundled with iMacs and the G3 "Blue & White" systems, didn't have great key feel for a membrane keyboard, but they did improve it and I'd say the lower one, bundled with the G4 systems (transparent case, silver interior, black keys) wasn't bad for a membrane keyboard.  Certainly better key feel than what Dell currently bundles with the multi-thousand dollar Precision workstations, their "Dell 104 Quiet Key", which just feels terrible in my opinion:

I had a user who kept that original iMac keyboard (top one in that photo) because he liked that size... kept it for years and only agreed to replace it when Apple brought out the latest aluminum flat boards. Must've used that thing for almost 10 years.

I was just reading the review posted over on Deskthority.  I took the overall conclusion to be that it is a decent piece of hardware in a less than decent plastic housing.  I am interested to see what other users report, though.  Especially since I want to recommend it as a mechanical option to mac users.

Does the Tactile Pro have the same switch as Filco Zero? I was thinking about getting the LE Tactile Pro. But if the switches are the same, I think I'll just get the Zero.

Immediate question: I wonder if the paint can be scratched off.

From looking at the prototype picture, it looks like the paint is inside the clear plastic shell -- just like the white version.

Personally, I don't care for plastic that has been painted or moulded to look metallic. First it is the knowledge that it is fake that makes it feel cheap. Second, it is mostly a type of grey, not reflective like real metal. Third, it usually scratches easily, often revealing translucent grey plastic underneath.

Hi,

I have a Matias v2(yes with the ice, problem), and i was really going for v3...but.... in the end,... somehow i did not get it...i got a Realforce instead. ;P

I am  actually happy that matias makes tactile keyboards for mac, cause at least we keyb aficionados really care.

Well, maybe somewhere in the future, cause on the mac its really comfy to have all those function keys, i am missing volume up and down already, :(

For most part, i do not really care if they are silver with black, the white version still looks cool to me, but  yes black keys will do fine too.

The ALPS keys are ok, but not on par with blue mx or topre switches; i find my fingers have to do much more work on the ALPS to get something on screen.

BTW, maybe it will look like this;

I'm using my new Realforce 105UB right now – definitely domey, and I'd rank the Topre switch pretty even with the KB-1421. The latter has less travel, a more tactile feel and a really good solid thock to it, and has much more positive action than most dome switches. The Topre switch is muddy in comparison. The Topre of course wins for those who can manage not to bottom out, but that's made harder by the top-heavy force curve that encourages hard bottoming out, and Cherry switches (particularly browns) – in contrast with domes and ALPS – allow for lighter typing as a result of not needing to begin every stroke with a hard push.

The KB-1421's medium travel and precise tactile action makes it feel like scissor done properly: it's everything scissor promised and failed to deliver, with a very elegant design to match. I was tempted to stray to it from my Cherry MX brown actually, but then I'd feel stupid for spending so much on a FILCO for my desk at work if I could replace it with a cheap Dell ;-)

Besides, I don't see a picture of this new Tactile Pro 3 … One of the most obvious problems for me with the TP3 is the very outdated white plastic balloon tyre look. I just don't know if the silver plastic will ever look as nice as the real aluminium of an Apple keyboard. That WiNDy alu keyboard looks more like what I would have expected from Matias – the nice sheet metal look – and the price would no doubt match Mac users' expectations.

I jsut received mine in the mail today, I'm typing on it right now...

It looks pretty good from a distance, the silver finish strikes me as something tha will probably not age well... and the keys look pretty odd with 3 different labels on them.

Feels pretty good and sounds great too, I'll definately be hanging on to it. I don't know where and when I'll end up using it tough, it's pretty noisy, takes up a lot of space(compared to a tenkeyless).

I'll get some time on it and report back with a few pictures.

Well I received mine earlier this week and I've been using it for about 2 days.  I'm not sure that I'm going to keep it.

The keyboard feels AMAZING to type on; both the tactile feedback and the clicky sound are EXACTLY what I was looking for.

I read earlier someone commenting on how odd it looks to see all the characters on the keyboard; if this was a concern, then why order it? You can clearly see from the pictures on matias' website that it has all these characters displayed.  Personally it doesn't bother me one bit...and I kinda like having them there (was emailing a friend whose mother tongue is Spanish so as a joke I prefaced all of my questions in the email with ¿...never knew how to type that before!)

The one thing I can't seem to get over is the case; I really don't like it; it looks painted and I would agree with the other posters that this case will not age well.

It is a shame that Matias didn't put as much effort into the exterior of the keyboard as they did the internals.  The feel of this keyboard when typing really is second-to-none.

I'll continue to use it for a few more days and see how I feel.  If I return it then I think that a Filco cherry blue keyboard is in my future :)

Cherry MX blue and Fukka white ALPS are very, very different in both sound and feel. If you consider the Tactile Pro 3 perfect, then there's a good chance that you won't like Cherry MX blue as it's much lighter, much less tactile and has a very rattly click. (Personally I prefer Cherry MX blue as it's smoother and lighter – the TP3 is a bit sharp and heavy for me, although it's a good switch, if you can live with the ping that is.)

You raise a very good point; the reason that I like this keyboard is because I used a Dell mechanical keyboard many moons ago and loved it, so when I use this keyboard it reminds me very much of my old Dell. (I believe the Dell used the same Alps switches).

Having said that, I don't believe that the Alps keys are the only ones I'll like; I had a chance to try out a Razer Blackwidow keyboard last week (which uses Cherry blues) and I quite enjoyed it.  In fact, I might hazard a guess that I will be able to type even more quickly on the blues than the Alps...the proof, though, will be after prolonged use of them both.

The problem is that Filcos are not sold by anyone here in Canada, so I'm ordering it from the keyboard co in the UK...so I doubt it will arrive before the 30 day return period ends with Matias....ugh!

If you like the TP3, try and get your hands on something with blue montereys, something like the Siig. If you are willing to go with an adapter, there are XT and AT focus FK2001s around, with the original, complicated clicky white ALPS. Those two are my favorites among the ALPS switches I've come across.

There are others, though none are mac specific like the TP3. Another option, not sure if this is something you're interested in, is find yourself an AEKII, an ADB adapter, and transplant the switches from the TP3 or a Focus. Mac layout, shiny (in the Firefly sense) keys, and that wonderful ALPS feel.

Alternatively, just build yourself a new case for the TP3!

Hello Everyone.

Edgar Matias here.  I've been reading the comments on the Silver & Black Tactile Pro and thought I'd clear up a few things...

The keycaps are indeed laser printed, so there shouldn't be any wearing issues.

The extra symbols on the keys are a Mac-specific feature.  Most of our customers are Mac users, which is why we chose Alps switches and not Cherry.  Apple originally used Alps switches, so that's what most of the old timers like.  To an Alps fan, Cherry switches feel cheap and non-tactile.

The Caps Lock key is linear (not tactile) because the LED indicator fills the cavity where the tactile leaf normally resides.  Without the metal leaf, the key loses its tactile feel.

The case is a high-polish transparent polycarbonate, coated with aluminum paint, using the same process by which Apple paints their aluminum laptops.  In fact, our painting vendor has done work for Apple in the past.  Since it's metallic paint, it should stay new-looking for a very very long time.

The case will squeak if you torque it -- why anyone would want to do this, I don't know.  This is not an indication of the quality of materials.  It's because (for aesthetic reasons) the keyboard is curvy and held together with only 2 screws, plus a series of hooks around the edges of the case.  We put a lot of effort into the design of the case.  Other mechanical keyboards have a very flat case design, with 8+ screws holding everything together.

As for cost, the cheapest cases are the textured black ABS plastic ones that Filco and others use.  The Das has a polished black painted top case, with a cheaper textured ABS bottom case.  Razer uses some expensive coatings on their high-end keyboards, but underneath they're still ABS.  The most expensive case is that of the Tactile Pro with polished polycarbonate for both the top and bottom case, painted internally or externally depending on the colour.

Let me know if you have any questions...

Wow, thanks for all the info. Great to hear it from the horse's mouth, but I probably won't be purchasing a Tactile Pro 3 due to its rather loud ping (based on recordings) compared to other boards and even the AEKII itself. Are there any plans to reduce the ping in a revised version of the TP3 or perhaps an upcoming TP4?

Wait … you mean that Apple carve laptops out of solid aluminium, only to then paint them to look like aluminium? (I know they paint the keycaps, though, which is a pity.) I know that they painted the titanium machines because all that paint came straight back off again.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to our issues!

As i mentioned in an earlier post, the feel of this keyboard is superb; my issue was with the case itself.  Let's assume you are correct and the durability of the case is not an issue. There are still areas where a bit more attention to detail would have been appreciated.  For instance, Filco's case may be cheaper but they place 4 rubber feet on the base of their boards; they even include 2 on the base of the extendable feet. You have 2 at the front of the keyboard (and that's it!). I find my keyboard slides around on my desk when I'm typing and I've never had that happen before.

I'm glad that someone is producing a quality keyboard for the Mac; and considering the fact that you are here and listening, I'm confident that your product will continue to improve!

The ping is from the metal parts inside the Alps switches. How loud it is depends on how hard you bottom out.  Most users don't notice it, but it can be louder depending on your typing style.

Having said that, we've been working on cloning the old AEKII switch for over a year.  it's significantly quieter.

Holy confusion, batman!

Took me 15 minutes of reading, re-reading the TIL page to realize that the right-hand metal thingy and the spring have nothing to do with the electrical contact. At first glance it looks like they're breaking contact, and that's what's causing the switch to work.

I don't know if the current unibody MacBooks are painted, but the older ones with the silver keyboards certainly were.  I assume they did this for the purpose of colour-matching.  It would look weird if the aluminum paint on the keyboard didn't match the shade of aluminum on the case.  Apple is fanatical about these little details.

Most people don't realize, but colour-matching is a huge problem for manufactures using different materials that all need to be the same colour.  This (allegedly) is what delayed the white iPhone.
