~Sifo's Keyboard Services~

Send a request here: http://servicerequest.sifo.ca

Hihi welcome to my service thread! It seems I'm one of the only Canadian modders around so if you'd like work done to your boards and you don't wanna pay the hefty price to send it to another country and back plus currency conversion, I'm the guy you're looking for. I'm located in Toronto, ON.

I do switch tuning (lube/spring/sticker), full assembly, board and LED mod and swapping, repairs, and whatever else you wanna throw at me. Can also help you with programming firmware stuff for your board. I'm also down to meet up if you're close by and want to try something that I have ^_^ Note that I am currently not very comfortable or interested in modding stock boards but drop me a message anyway.

I offer competitive pricing, If you're interested, please fill out the form or drop me a private message here. Because of the huge variability in each individual project, I cannot give out a list of pricing for every service, but instead I will personally send you a quote for what you need done. My rates also depend on how much work it is, and with the Canadian dollar dropping so much the prices are constantly changing.

I'm only going to accept 1 order at a time. This way I don't stress myself out by looking at a huge pile of work that still needs to be done, and you can be assured that I am paying my fullest attention and detail to your and only your project that you need done. I will also not undertake any project that I don't feel comfortable doing or am not experienced in. For those of you who have worked with me in the past, my prices will have gone up a slight bit because our dollar sucks. With that said, I accept CANADIAN DOLLAR. I am ONLY shipping to Canadian addresses. You can send me parts from where ever around the world, but I'm only going to send the final product to a Canadian address.

I will add a queue to the second post and move down in that order. If I get no response from the person within 48 hours I move down to the next person and the unresponsive person gets bumped down.

I use a Hakko 888D and for now a soldapult >_> which means working on stock boards (swapping LEDs especially) is a challenge. I prefer you supply everything, although I have a little bit of lube I can use for a little extra charge.

Below is a picture portfolio of previous projects! You can also read the comments for reviews. Note that some pictures may feature outdated equipment/set up. And sorry for the poor photography :P

GON NerD Acrylic + Text Review

Review
More
My "super quick" review of Sifo and the board he built (GON Acrylic TKL):

Text Review:

Background:

More
This board, along with a hopefully soon Novatouch once I sell off some of my other boards to fund it, is my endgame setup. I knew it would be my endgame the moment I saw the "original", b7ad's GON Acrylic, which this is basically a carbon copy of (sorry, no originality here). The LEDs matched my Linux terminal colours exactly, the flathead screws and the whole "fresh out of the shop" feel was perfect and it was love at first sight.

I knew that to have a perfect board I would need to assemble it properly, since GON doesn't offer assembly of acrylic. At the time I only knew of Margo's assembly services, but the lovely exchange rate and Canada's super affordable shipping rates [/sarcasm] dissuaded me from shipping to UK.

Luckily I had begun checking out geekhack at the time and saw Sifo's artisan services, so sent him a PM and the rest is history. Probably one of the best choices I've ever made (not saying I've made many good ones in my life, but beside the point).

Review

-------------

Build Quality:

More
Some credit has to go to GON for making some of the best tuned switches... ever. He's getting a bit of flak from people over delayed orders, but it says a lot about how good the man is when everyone stops complaining once they have received it. I will still wholeheartedly recommend GON, he's a very patient, great guy when you talk to him... just multiply advertised wait time by four before you make your decision.

However, I give my main credit to Sifo for assembling the board so well as to do the switches the proper justice. His attention to detail is excellent and all the switches are perfectly aligned. I know this because my BSP Olivetti, which is known for having crooked keys, is *uniformly* crooked (BSP QC is crapppp but the texture is worth the pain) when placed on. Just to be sure, I put on my Vortex set and everything lined up exactly flush.

The board's frame is assembled perfectly, screws aligned flush, alu feet level. If I *had* to nitpick one thing it's that he put the stick on rubber feet (not the ones on the alu feet, there are two other ones you put at the other end of the board) slightly misaligned, but that's just my OCD and it has no discernible effect, I just think honest reviews should cover *all* bases.

10/10

-------------

Service/Communication:

More
I think this is the most important part of "reviewing" someone - their work is important, but more important is how well they communicate and let you know about your product. In this area, Sifo gets an 11/10. He replied all my PMs and texts promptly, but what was most impressive is that he PM'd me and told me exactly how the build was going and issues he encountered.

In particular, he mentioned that the aluminum housing layers did not align flush, but he tried many times to get them to line up. I probably would have never noticed if he did not told me, though even now that I know, I don't even think about it - it's that small of an "issue". The fact that he was willing to alert me about a "negative" aspect of his work that is fairly unnoticeable was a welcome sign of honesty and one of the things I value in folks. Too many times I've been burned on Kijiji or mechmarket from people who "forget" to mention minor defects - even though they make no difference, I really value full disclosure and I do it in all my own sales.

Furthermore, during our correspondence, I realized I forgot to ask him to clip the stabilizers, after he had finished assembling. He willingly went back and figured out a way to clip them (luckily, GON's plate design is genius and he was able to avoid desoldering), and even lubed the wires with his own lube. Best part was he did it all free of charge, notifying me right away when it was finished.

11/10 Son of a ***** even let me try his TH600 when I came to pick up my board!  :thumb:

-------------

The board itself (feel, use, look, software):

More
Acrylic is one of those materials that don't look great... until you light it up with LEDs. It's the main reason I chose acrylic (also, to save money T_T). In that respect, when the board is on full LED, it is god-tier. I'm huge on aesthetics and this board satisfies me completely.

Feel-wise, the switches are stellar. I was extremely impressed by Topre at the meetup, but I still think Ergo-clear 62g wins my heart. It's still not quite as "smooth/buttery" as Topre, but it just feels so... right. Where Topre gives each individual press a great feel, Ergo-Clears feel effortless - I can maintain a typing rhythm much better and the feel of the smooth lubed switch accompanied by the satisfying "clack" of the downstroke... Amazing. I still notice no difference with stickers, but it came included with the switch, and it doesn't make it feel worse, so can't complain.

The frame itself feels really good. Even though it's acrylic, there's a hefty weight to it, about the same as my TEX aluminum Poker II. There is some slight flex if you push super hard on the middle, but then again, so does my Cherry G80-3000 at work. I never actually type that hard to create that flex anyway. During normal (and even fast typing), the frame is rock solid, with no flex at all.

My only gripe is it's really freaking hard to find linux support for NerD_config and the board seems to have problem when booting directly into linux through syslinux. Probably affects only 0.1% of us since the rest of you are windows using plebs, but just something to keep in mind if you have read this far and are deciding on getting a GON.

9.5/10

-------------

Pics:

Still waiting on Ivan's R4 PBT and exchange rate to go down so I can get some doubleshot keys from elitekeyboards.

I love this board so much I took it to work for a long typing session. I've used it for about two days now, long enough to get a feel for it.

Filco mod Text Review
More
Hey all! I recently had a Filco MJ1 modded by Sifo so here's my short review. Unfortunately no pics right now because I'm waiting on a cable from mimic and a few other small things to finish it up.

Sifo is super cool and friendly, I was kinda nervous as it was my first time meeting another geekhacker in person but that passed quickly after we started talking. I came to his side of town for drop it off, and he came to mine to deliver it back to me which was really nice of him.

I am very impressed by his work as well. To be fair I don't really have anything to compare it too, but it looks and feels phenomenal and I couldn't be happier. Sifo clearly puts time into his work and has excellent attention to detail.

Pricing was super fair too, it was nice to be charged in Canadian for once especially considering how crappy our dollar is atm. Turnaround was really fast (work was done within 3 days IIRC), although as Sifo mentioned that is liable to increase so don't expect to get the same speed in the future.

Overall, dealing with Sifo was a great experience and I would definitely recommend him to fellow Canadians for keyboard services.

Thanks Sifo!

Not updating this anymore, too lazy. I hope it's enough content and examples for you guys though <3

Again I live in Toronto and I'm available for local meet up ^_^ Otherwise you cover shipping both ways.

If you'd like to have cables as cool as mine visit http://mimic-cables.com

Tell them Sifo sent you ^_^

Disclaimer: I am not a professional or certified electrician, I do this as a hobby and not as a job, I'm simply looking to make enough money for my time. I do this for the Canadian community and for my love of keyboards. With that said, there is always a chance that I will make an error or mess up one of your boards. However I am willing to do what I can to compensate on the chance that something occurs, and I will be sure to work things out with you until things are right. Thank you.

Is that the GH lube? How do you effectively put it on? Squirt inside and then use the brush?

I don't believe so. GH lube doesn't come with such a fine needle. I believe Sifo uses his own mix.

I do use my own mix of RO59 if people request it, but the standard is 70/30 krytox in the beta GH lube kit mkawa gave me like over a year ago. I have my own needles but this one came with it.

It's a super effective and thin needle, I don't need to use a brush at all anymore.

Too embarrassing to show photos of but I managed to ghetto fix a QFR's connector piece (the one on the actual PCB). The eyelets got ripped out along with the connector, but I managed to recomplete the circuit by trailing solder from the pins to the broken trace point :P typing on it now, seems to be working fine. Was a $5 repair job, was worried it would cost me more to fix it haha.

You're between 30 and 60 minutes drive from me (at a guess), and I was just about to write a post offering similar services. Hopefully there's room in the market for a little competition :P

Update on this I had to jumper wire the QFR connector directly to the pins on the controller. You can see where the old connector sat (pads got ripped off)

I have yet to find the time to put on caps and actually type on it. I'm behind schedule so I don't think I'll be doing that, I'd prefer to just get it out to Calvin asap. It was enough to have the pleasure of building it, I hope I can get myself a Viper or another Orion in the future.

Meanwhile, it looks like I'm gonna be building a kmac2 as well soon.

Yeah I do it for the spacebar too, but I don't think the spacebar matters as much for whether you clip them or not.

I mean I have a personal problem with not liking them but that won't stop me from assembling a board with them for you.

Can't guarantee I won't accidentally break a few switches though since I heard they're so prone to damage

red KMAC is completed, will move onto ergo dox and poker 2. I added a disclaimer about any damage or accidents that may occur while your board(s) is/are in my hands. Basically I'll do my best to make things right, I'm not doing this to make money but more so to help out anyone who needs it.

Quick before and after pics will be posted when I awake, I'm exhausted.

EDIT: Pics up in first post :)

Sifo offered to meet up with me because I was curious to know what 62g clear switches felt like and ended up bringing along his crazy awesome boards. A few weeks later I requested that he assemble two KMACs for me. He went out of his way to source parts so that I didn't have to order stuff online and pay more in international shipping charges. He's a stand-up dude and you should get in touch with him if you need anything done :thumb:

Sifo did a great job with the boards! The Ergodox looks great as does the Poker with the new plate (am typing on it now, been a while! I missed it...)

Was able to stop by his place and check out his boards, had to of course see the GON board with the Miami set. Was cool too see his collection of artisan keys also, having never seen a Clack or Bro Cap until then. We hung out for a bit and had a small Canadian Keycon haha.

Overall really happy with the results, was good to talk to someone else about mechanical keyboards for once and actually be able to talk about topics that would be too obscure or geeky for most people IRL. Thanks Dude!

All four! (technically 3, yellow/white alphas from Penumbra) Will mix it up to start, use the Calm Depth Ergo mods on one side, Penumbra Ergo mods on the other, 23 commando alphas on one hand...then not sure haha. Will try a few variations.

I'm still taking orders til the end of this month, and then I'm taking 2 weeks off towards the end of August. After that regular school will have started up again so we'll see if I can ease into getting a couple of boards done.

Thanks everyone for your continued support thus far <3

LEDs I always go for the ones on eBay from Hong Kong, it takes a while but they've stepped up their postal service lately. Have never had issues in the past and they're cheap.

Other parts I do bulk orders in waves from mouser to save on shipping :/

That keyboard is way too sexy :S

It's ALL MINE.

The sexiness hurts a bit when I consider how much it cost.

Don't worry, it won't be the last  :))!

Think of it like a top tier hooker. Yeah, its expensive, but you'll probably never get that chance again.

Yep, gotta sell some stuff to get a Novatouch. I actually liked it's feel more than the Realforce.

Had the pleasure of assembling an Atreus for platypus.

Was doing some switches before pizza arrived, stock clears.

The plate makes for a great lubing station.

Was really disappointed that it wasn't blue.

Microcontroller was tough to do by hand... I ended up ruining the one platypus provided and went out and bought one to replace for him. It was only partially my fault to be honest. Oh and I didn't get any pics of doing the diodes, breezed through those super fast. I triple checked them afterwards and fixed them up to look nice, don't worry.

This was the first try.

So here was the first problem I encountered after figuring out how to upload the firmware on Windows (thanks dfj for the help xD)

I soldered on the PCB upside down... whoops. Damn symmetrical layouts.

But then while rebuilding I noticed something... there's an awful lot of flex in the PCB. The controller doesn't have enough clearance! So I thought maybe I installed it the wrong way or messed up. This is when I ruined one of the eyelets and had to go buy a new one. Thankfully there's a local store and they're not too expensive.

****ty lighting pics of my 2nd try at the controller. It got better I think... and at least it didn't take 2 hours figuring out how to program it.

Unfortunately the flex problem still persisted. I soldered it as CLOSE AS I POSSIBLY COULD to the keyboard PCB and the plate still wouldn't sit nicely! It flexes a LITTLE bit now and some switches aren't in all the way because they simply can't be... I don't know if this is just me nitpicking or what, but I normally want things to be absolutely perfect. Anyway after I couldn't figure it out I just accepted that this was the best it could get and soldered all the switches in.

It functions perfectly fine and doesn't feel strange, none of the switches visibly stick out further than the others... the glossy acrylic is a little dirty though.

I don't have DSAs so I had to throw on some DCS. The switches FeelsGoodMan. Oh and also the USB was pretty tight fit so... it means the plate and controller are seated as low as they can be.

Was probably the hardest time I ever had building a keyboard... was not expecting this much trouble haha but a good learning experience...

Also big shoutout to those who stopped by the stream :P I streamed myself assembling the Atreus today and got a few viewers, hope everyone learned something and/or had fun!

oh and no typing video for this one... way too hard.

Did some cleaning of Vintage blacks, preparing to go into that red KMAC you see once I get a PCB from GON. Lubing up next once they dry.

I've used it for about two days now, long enough to get a feel for it.

lol my resume was only personal boards when I started. As long as you can build yourself nice keyboards, you can do it for others and they'll appreciate that.

Heyyyyyyy so there were probably some order requests that I missed when I rage quit the whole services thing. No hard feelings I didn't ignore you guys or anything I just wasn't actively checking my spreadsheet. If you'd still like stuff done (some of these were from like half a year ago :X) I'm more than happy to help you out and give you priority over other orders.

Thinking about streaming builds again... but so far every time I've done it I get distracted and **** up a board or something :\ bad luck happens when I stream keyboard builds lol. Maybe I'll do it for my own personal boards and not other people's :P Just waiting for parts then!

Another day another keyboard...

I'm really nervous about building this one because it's so nice and I want it to come out absolutely perfect, especially since it isn't mine. So I may or may not stream it... I'll definitely be spending a lot of time working on it, so we'll see.

Hey guys so I got promo'd and will be full time at work starting the end of this month ish. This probably means after all the stuff in queue I'm gonna have to close up shop :(

plan is to stream some switch soldering tomorrow at about 8 pm EST if i'm not dying of heat exhaustion (have been the past few days as soon as I get home)

also planning to reopen orders once I settle into the full time position. I've never worked full time before and I'm very bad at managing time, because I sleep for like 16 hours (no exaggeration)

I might try to do like 1 order a month or so, just because I enjoy it

EDIT: ah no stream tomorrow unless late night. forgot dinner with friends :X

As nice as it is to have a bunch of viewers, I think I enjoyed having a manageable number of people in my chat more. Except for kirkle

next time hopefully I'll have had a better day and stream at better hours :X
