Oh wow, I really like that one. I hope we can get in on a groupbuy for those. I've been wanting a board with that layout for a very long time, and the Plum96 and CM TK had some things about them that I didn't want to compromise with that has stopped me.

That looks pretty sweet if one would be able to add an arrow cluster inbetween there. A 1u numpad Zero, a bit smaller right shift and 1u alt, win, gui and ctrl and suddenly there is enough space.

very good job on desoldering, especially the LEDs. i spoilt quite a number of the LED pcb tracks on my shine 2 tkl to the point that now it does not have any sort of backligthing anymore.

Thanks! Took a few hours with a Hakko 936 and a generic solder sucker.  I practiced by installing a custom plate on my QFR before taking apart the Shine 2.

I opened up an Cherry MX8100. It had a card reader and a buzzer so it had a few PCBs inside. I like how these pictures turned out.

Per suggestion (I didn't know this thread existed) here are some of the PCB designs I've done in the past.  Some are functional electronics, others are, well, "special" :)

This was the puzzle badge for Defcon 20.  The top part was a fully developed dev platform, complete with PS2 keyboard, VGA, mouse and mic.

Did a set of playing cards, fabricated PCBs.  All the art was done in the free version of Eagle just to see if I could do it.  For those not familiar, it's NOT graphic design software :)

Close up of some of the playing card PCBs.  Wired magazine did a write up of them.

Defcon 22 circuit board badge.  Note the double rows of through holes on each side- some of the pads are square, some are round, it was an encoded secret message :)

More of the Defcon 22 badges

Skull done as copper layer on PCB

That's probably enough for now.  After Defcon this year I will continue work on doing a keyboard PCB with art/colors as part of the PCB...it's going to be kind of a pet project...

Yes- and interesting side note to that-  at one point I got a strange error from Eagle (granted it's German software, so I get if there was a translation issue but this was just weird)- the error said "Too many points in the x direction"  - so being curious I rotated everything to see if I could get "Too many points in the y direction"-  Strangely I did not....

Yes, doing art in PCB software is it's own form of punishment-  most people putting art on PCBs are taking vector graphics and doing an import in something like Altium- but most of the PCB apps make any imported art (vector or other) look like ass, for various reasons...

Also, since some of the art is in the copper layer, these boards all fail most fab house design rule checks about a billion times...it's fun trying to explain to the fab house that you really did mean for that skull to be in copper...

Awesome stuff, 1o57!

I don't put a lot of "art" onto my PCBs... but I do spend a lot of time making the traces aesthetically pleasing, which most people don't even see (if it's opaque solder mask), or wouldn't appreciate even if they could.

I usually find room for my avatar logo in exposed copper. Here's a shot of the JD45 PCB that arrived today.

Yeah, it took me quite a while to develop a good workflow for dealing with overlapping pads (i.e. bottom row variants). In my layouts, all bottom row footprints are MX-only unless I manually add the Alps pads, and then tweak the annular rings to be the most they can be. The tiny Alps pads which are also cut by MX mount holes make me cringe, though...

Not keyboard related at all, but the first ever PCB that I have laid out and got printed.
It is intended as a replica of a circuit board on a movie prop.

Made at DirtyPCBs.com, as a prototype. Needs to be trimmed: I had made it a bit large because I did not know if the edge was going to be cut exactly as I had specified. I had also not expected there to be solder mask.. nah well, but it is the correct colour. :)

So here is my first board that went into mass production.  I don't have any pics of just the board without parts, but this one is pretty close.

That is actually a prototype version.  Not too exciting, but it is getting there.

The PCB printers also assembled the boards, since SMD soldering is a *****.

Here is a pic of a few hundred of the finished boards with the custom 3D printed part I made for them attached.

That first board was super simple, but it took forever to do since I had to teach myself KiCAD, openSCAD, and basic electronics from scratch.  I have never attempted any electronics work before starting this project.  The board that I'm working on is much more complicated.  We have gone through about 5 small run prints with it and we keep finding things to add, change, or fix.  I dug the last version out of the trash and took a pic.

It is a housing for some sensors that are underneath.  All the stuff I posted is part of a big project making sensors for deployment in the field.  The tiny tube things fit through holes cut into the weatherproof enclosure so the sensors and have access outside of the closed environment.  The underside of the 3D printed part presses up flush against the PCB, and we can fill just those spots with potting compound to prevent damage from water, wind, and critters.  The big lot of boards in the second pic has the same 3D part attached, but in orange (school colors).

Defcon 22 circuit board badge.  Note the double rows of through holes on each side- some of the pads are square, some are round, it was an encoded secret message :)

Those are sweet. I know who I will be spamming with questions if I ever design my own pcb. :thumb:

Dat silk. Nice.

I avoid silkscreen overlapping pads, as in the past, some fabs wouldn't mask out the overlaps and I'd get paint on the pads... but I may have to give it a go again.  ;)

Honestly something like that didn't really occur to me but every time I've had boards made they mask it off.

Not really... I've made stuff for chiptune - synths, Gameboy mods, etc. but not actually bend circuits to make glitchy noise  ;)

Did a set of playing cards, fabricated PCBs.  All the art was done in the free version of Eagle just to see if I could do it.  For those not familiar, it's NOT graphic design software :)

Show Image

Close up of some of the playing card PCBs.  Wired magazine did a write up of them.

More of the Defcon 22 badges

That's probably enough for now.  After Defcon this year I will continue work on doing a keyboard PCB with art/colors as part of the PCB...it's going to be kind of a pet project...

So the badges are part of a greater contest whole- I'd hate to point you at spoilers, but there have been a number of Wikis and walk-through write-up put online by people who follow my contests...

I'd be happy to send you a badge though.

I was supposed to send one to someone else here, but I don't remember who (it's my busy season, getting ready for Defcon THIS year...

PM me info if you want me to send you a badge...

After 29 board revisions and 5 test prints of old board versions, it is finally ready for production.  The parts are boxed up, the quote is obtained, and the printers are ready.  My second circuit board is about to be printed and assembled.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It says Small Mesh Sensor Board.  Must be for some research, though I'm not sure exactly what the test method is or what equipment this would pair with.  Cool stuff though, building a custom board for a research group.  :thumb:

I'll post an explanation here with a little more detail than the Mail Show and Tell thread.

These are the communication and control boards for a mesh networked sensor array.  About 130 sensors are going to put out into the middle of nowhere - a drilling site in the panhandle of Texas.  The sensors are going to detect CO_2, CH_4, p, t, and Rh.  There is also going to be a sensor unit in a UAV that will patrol the skies above.  The sensors will all communicate with each other in an XBee mesh network.  The sensors will coordinate data packets and send them to a home base through a cell phone network.  At the home computer, we can make neat 2D graphs of the data collected in real time (3D if we incorporate the UAV data).  The point of the sensor is to detect and track gas leaks as they form plumes and blow away.  Hopefully, at the real world field site, we won't detect anything, because the area we are monitoring is used to store excess CO_2.  A plume would cause a cloud-kill effect.  But while we are testing the sensors, we can do all sorts of fun things with tracking clouds.  That isn't my part of the project, but it will be neat.

So this board is the command board.  An ATmega 2560 controls all the things happening.  There is an XBee modem slot as well for the communication.  The board has several power converter circuits, since our solar power will come in at 12 V, but we need to supply 3.3 V, 4 V, 5 V, higher current 5 V, and 12 V to various parts of the sensors and components.  The board has a real time clock, external oscillator, SPI, ICSP, 11 monitoring A/D inputs, a pot. to adjust a pump, 1024 kb serial eeprom, and an (Alps) SD card interface.  Everything else is wiring for the sensors house on a breakout board connected at the 20 pin header (I've posted it here before, it has the 3D printed crap on it) which routes through some level translators.

I'm currently writing the section of my dissertation on the design and construction of this board, so I could go on for ages.  The schematic description alone is 9 pages already.  This has been a huge ****ing project, especially since going into it I didn't know anything about circuits, CAD, or 3D printing - yet now I am competent.  Trial by fire indeed.

That's badass! I knew you worked for the NSA or something.

That's basically what I said.  But I guess you went into a bit more detail or whatever.

It says Small Mesh Sensor Board.

Sounds fun though.  :D  Cool stuff.

Some of the PCBs I designed came in the mail today.

It is so satisfactory to see everything wave soldered on and looking shiny.  There are still over a hundred more boards to come, but those won't be here for another few days.

Awesome!

I could never imagine myself designing something like that :))
