Yo guys, anyone willing to educate an ignorant noob looking to buy his first set?
Hyperfuse looks extremely nice, and from (quickly) skimming through a couple pages, it seems like GMK is highly regarded. So some of these posts suggests that these would be ABS since GMK doesn't have the equipment to make keys in other materials. However, from what I've heard so far, ABS caps aren't as "desirable" as other materials.
Am I just misinformed, or is ABS from GMK just that much better?
Cherry caps are the only thick ABS double shot moulding available, as far as I know, and this particular combination makes a very good product that provides an above average typing experience, and has high quality and reliability. But this may be different for you, and your needs and likes. Only you can tell if you prefer this product over the diversity that is available in the market.
ABS and PBT are the most common plastics that are used for caps manufacturing, along with some POM caps that are a little bit harder to get. PBT has more resistance to abrasion so its surface is harder to get shiny with use. ABS is softer, therefore it can get shine easier. However, the material of a key cap is only one of its characteristics that accounts for a pleasing typing experience, to its appearance and overall feeling. The profile, legends engraving method, and thickness are as important, and in some aspects are even more critical. OEM, DCS and Cherry have cylindrical tops and their general shape is similar. OEM are the tallest and you can source thick or thin ABS, thick or thin PBT, and they come in a variety of engraving, including lasered, pad printed, die sublimation and double shot, recently also you can get double shot PBT ones, there are multiple sources for them. DCS are SP made profile that is similar to Cherry but is has round edges, the material is thin, and the main engraving method is double shot in ABS, recently, Matt3o is working in a first PBT die sublimated set. Cherry profile is available from IMSTO in a think or thin PBT presentations, and GMK is the only manufacturer in its double shot moulding type.
