The typeface used on the AEK was Univers 57 condensed oblique if you wanted to get an exact match. Not a big fan of DSA myself, but I've always preferred the older Apple legends over the standard PC ones.
Always enjoyed the look of the AEK sets. Sounds good :thumb:
neat
Interested. Love the look of these sets.
DSA Vintage?
I know, but that font costs money :)) . Even if I paid the license for myself I'd probably run into trouble distributing keysets with the font.
I'm using Oswald Light in italic instead. It's really similar and it's under the SIL Open Font License, so AFAIK I can distribute it for free.

Please research everything fully (I'm sure you will). We don't want another MiTo situation where he steals graphics :))
Could you find out how much the licensing would cost? It will probably be quite a lot, but divided between the participants it might only be $2-5.
Wouldn't the XDA profile be better for a set like this? :)
Wouldn't the XDA profile be better for a set like this? :)
I'd even say this would be great on Cherry profile as well as an ePBT set.
The font on the caps is the only reason I've bothered building Alps boards from harvested AEKs. 100% will buy. Color should be more grey btw.
I would buy this in an instant in DSA profile.
EDIT: This could also be done with alps stems since SP has DSA Alps molds...
DSA vs XDA is a hard call for me.
I prefer the shape of XDA but really dislike PBT (and I'm guessing I'm either the only one or one of a very few).
FWIW, PBT vs ABS for me isn't about the shine, it's all bout the feel.
If there were XDABS, the choice for me would be easy. :D
OMG this is exactly what I want! I'll be in for sure. :))
I think XDA, which is more AEK-ish, is better.
The orange spacebar is interesting, but a (maybe textured) PBT keycap that looks like discolored ABS is somewhat odd...
DSA 2:1 ;)
SP's DSA dyesub is pretty quick too, not sure if there's many (or any) sets being run atm.
Cool concept! An alphas kit with Japanese sublegends (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/45/15/4d/45154de56fc5ff872fd3ff7a843af338.jpg) might be a nice addition as well
Oh yes please, this set would be amazing for all the Mac users here.
Though, as someone who just sold his DSA set for an EnjoyPBT one, I would prefer XDA.
Also, though I get why you name this set "Oblique", may I suggest using some Apple-related name instead? How about:
- DSA/XDA Command (as this is one of the few sets with the actual lettered Command key).
- DSA/XDA Vintage.
- DSA/XDA Appel (Apple in Dutch)
- DSA/XDA Changing the World :D
I guess I found the first group buy I'm gonna participate. When can we actually expect the GB to start? it is :thumb:
Maybe an accent kit with the colors of the old Apple logo?
Maybe a couple of alternate capslock sized keys for control and function (the //gs shipped with control in that position, when the aek came out there was a bit of grumbling because they moved caps from a 1u in the bottom left corner to replace the capslock)
Didn't think I'd like this from the title, but I kind of really want it!
Not a perfect match, but I think it'd look pretty good on the Modern M0110 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=92445.msg2518573#msg2518573)
Looks good! Looking forward to when to progresses to the GB stage!

I think you mean Clarus and she's a dogcow ;) Not sure if you'd run into any trademark issues with Apple using her though...
Was there much interest in 1976-style stripe option? My wife (who is sick of hearing about keyboards) even said she would want a set (and a keyboard to put them on) if they became a thing. Heh
/u/Quaddepo and myself have been working on the accent kit and were wondering what you guys think about something like this? There will be more accents for other layouts added later.Way to colorfull for me :P I would just keep it yellow, orange and blue. Exactly my thoughts, dimmed colors may do better justice to the monochromatic elegant nature of the base color.

Current colours are those of the old Apple logo. I don't really want to dim the colours since it'll look too much like Canvas. The idea was that you'd only use some of coloured mods to suit your own taste, I just added more to give people a choice.
I guess I could dim the colours a little if people really want that :)) .
I think the colors in the original Apple logo are too bright for full keys, maybe just the escape and enter, I'd use them instead for legends, for example on modifiers.
Well multiple and choose your own would work for me. I do feel that the mod kit would have to be big in that case though. I have been playing with some colors today, haven't really heard back from dr_derivative.

These are possible accent kits for TKL/60%. Any feedback/comments/suggestions?
Might it be better to have all modifiers be colored, and then let people decide which ones to select for the layout? Like offer a gray modifier set and then a color modifier set. That way if someone only wanted to do an ESC and Enter, or Tab and Shift keys, or whatever, they can pick and choose.
Perhaps alphas should have different colour? Lighter shade of grey would look better.
I'm still slowly making progress modifying all the kits based on feedback from the IC. Here are the icon mods for TKL ;D.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/e4dds9f.png)
On the "command" key, would you consider doing the "open apple" icon rather than the text "cmnd" like on the old AEK and AEK II keyboards?

- I know that even on current Apple keyboards, the Control key is just text, but since it has an official ^ icon, why not use that also?
- Same with Escape: ⎋
I agree with Dr. D. that there is no standards that can serve as a foundation for this set, just as a reference. Let's allow him to further refine the set and see what would be the final proposal.
I've updated the OP with some updated IC results for anyone interested in the statistics. There was a poll in the 9009r2 international kit thread, and about 80% of the people prefer to pay a bit more to get proper support. FYI the kit you have is missing also the swe/fi number 4 key, which is also a complete dealbreaker.
For the international ISO kit, do you guys think the key in the top left corner (above tab) should be added? I left them out in the IC to save on cost but a number of people have asked me to add it back in. The issue is that every ISO layout has a different key there and it will add like 5 extra keys to the international kit. Personally I rarely use that key — escape is placed in that positions on lots of keyboards — but I want to hear the opinions of international ISO users before I make a decision either way.

Well it seems that all the old Macintosh icons are trademarked by Apple and can't be used for commercial purposes :(

I noticed the 4¤ key, that was a mistake on my part in the original layouts.
Here's the kit so far. I still have to move around some of the legends to make sure they're properly aligned.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/QBVrppU.png)
Fun idea, but I'd be careful around the legality around "trade dress" in the USA. I would hope this is covered under fair use, or at least that Apple would look the other way, but one can never be too sure.
I've updated the OP with the kits we have finalised so far, let me know if there are any mistakes or any changes you want made.
I have been in contact with XDA and they have said they can't do 6u centre stem spacebars, which sucks for HHKB users. They also said they don't have 1u spacebar keys which a couple of ortho users requested.
I really appreciate that the base kit now includes the one unit back slash pipe key, that makes a lot of sense. I wonder if the esc key in the icon set should be instead the Icon version. Hoping for a 6u off centered space bar.

6u off-center stem will be in the spacebar kit, it's just centre stem that XDA can't do. I should've made that more clear ;D .
I'm sticking with the text esc key for now since the icon mod AEKs have the esc key as text. I might add an icon one later if there's lots of demand but I want to stay true to the original too.Show Image(https://deskthority.net/w/images/6/60/M0115D_ISO_front.JPG)

Reality Distortion and One More Thing are both too long to fit on a key unless I make the font super small. I'm not sure how many people would understand the references either (I had to Google reality distortion).
I can add the Jobs and Woz keys, although I already have Jobs' glasses in the set. It feels a bit weird to have an icon for Jobs and text for Woz, and I can't think of a similar icon to do for Wozniak, so I might just remove the glasses and add both Jobs and Woz keys. Any thoughts?
Was kinda thinking some of the longer ones would be on the Enter/Return key or Tab key kinda like Godspeed or Chocolatier did.
I like the idea of "One More Thing" being the Return/Enter novelty key.

I can do that actually. I usually never use novelties larger than 1u personally, but 'One more thing' would make a pretty good return.

Can we have these icons on the F-row please? I feel like this is very important for people whose intentions are to use this specifically for mac, well, atleast for me.
Update:
In the last week we've matched the keys of an M0116 to a Pantone colour and added some more kit designs, there are some more details in the OP. The only kits that are currently left to do are the Accent kit and Novelties ;D.Can we have these icons on the F-row please? I feel like this is very important for people whose intentions are to use this specifically for mac, well, atleast for me.
I think the majority of people interested in this keyset aren't actually Mac users, but like the aesthetic. IMO adding those extra symbols spoils the clean look of the keys a little. Plus, even if there is a majority of Mac users, many people use programmable keyboards and will remap those functions elsewhere on the board (or at least the media controls, not sure how the other functions work in terms of keycodes).
Changing 'control' to 'ctrl' and 'function' to 'fn' in base icon modifier? To me, it'll look cleaner and more distinguishable from the text mod.I've tried to size the text on each of the mods to suit the size of the key, so 1u ctrl keys do say 'ctrl' and 1u fn says 'func'. I think 'fn' looks too small on a key in this font. Regardless, I don't think anyone will really be able to agree on 'ctrl' vs 'control', so I'm leaving them as is for now. If there is a big consensus either way I will change it.
I think losing 'cmd' text on the cmd key could look better too.The original AEK has an apple logo on the left and the loopy command symbol on the right. Of course we can't use the Apple logo and IMO it looks too bare without anything, so I replaced it with cmd. I can't think of anything better, but I'm not too sure about 'cmd' either :)) .
I'm a bit concern about the small legend like 'alt', 'del', 'print screen' and etc will come out blurry and illegible due to the dye sub.I asked XDA and they said:
We can make very narrow line sir, don't worry:)

psssst... the original AEKII/ADB keyset is dyesub, seems fine.

Japanese Alphas and Novelty kits have been created.
The katakana have been moved to their standard positions, since a couple of them are in weird places on the AEK. This benefits anyone actually using these caps to input katakana, while it won't make much difference to those who just want cool sublegends.
The novelty kit shown is what we have so far. As always any feedback is appreciated ;D.
We've also created a banner for XDA Oblique. So if you want to show your support you can add it to your signature ;).Code: [Select]

"I want to keep it as similar as possible to the icon mods on the AEK, I think a ^ or ⎋ would look out of place given the theme of the keyset."
So wouldn't it make more sense to use ctrl rather than control?

As an occasional vim user myself, I find it weird that you guys feel the need for those arrow keys at all.
Also not Apple-related. In fact, of all things, emacs would be a better candidate, as macOS has always supported lots of emacs' navigational shortcuts.

The base font for one PC is $65, but there'd likely be a "per volume" license cost that may not be too much. Might be worth looking into if there is more interest in the original font.
A bit sad that there is no 6u center stemmed for Topre
Is there a chance for a basic iso support on the katakana kit? In order to match with the windows japanese layout, when assigned to a standard non-japanese iso keyboard, a copy of the 1U |\ key with the appropriate tetriary legend would need to be added. A full jis option would be preferred (xda even has the required spacebar available), but I don’t think there is enough interest for it.
the pale/pastel colours for the Accents kit is great (DAT HHKB layout render - DAYUM!).
The single color set render shows an elegant keyboard that by all means look far better than any actual AEK. Now, it may be a diservice for the set to be called after AEK, while it looks far better than it. The XDA profile and the color chosen, plus the nicely designed fonts and symbols matched so well that the original is just a bad dream compared with it.
I honestly didn't care much for the accent mods until now, because wow, those are just lovely.

So if I just add a second \|ム key that should work for ISO? If I set my keyboard layout to Japanese both ISO keys output those characters. I should probably add a second \| key to the normal alphas kit to cover an ISO board without buying an ISO kit, for those who are just cheap or whose specific variant of ISO isn't supported anyway. The spacebar I can probably get from the spacebar kits.
MOQ is 25 sets and pricing should be around $15-ish for a set that size. I can get actual quotes if you're still interested when we get to GB phase, but IMO it's not worth it. You could just get the blanks kit which can cover those keys, although blanks won't be quite as nice.Based on xda canvas pricing, it should be about $13. At that price I could buy ten sets, but the additional 15 to make it past the MOQ are probably difficult to sell (especially considering that I have been the only one to show interest).
You could buy a couple of blanks kits and have a go at DIY dye-subbing, using a guide like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/6egoot/idea23_how_to_dye_sub_your_own_caps/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/6egoot/idea23_how_to_dye_sub_your_own_caps/). Edit: I have two suggestions:
Why have control instead of ctrl on the icon mods? On the models with icon mods, it is always ctrl.
Also, any way to get altgr keys? Right alt is altgr on European models, and it'd be great to have it on this keyset.

An EU vendor would be nice..
These look extremely nice, but I'm worried this will turn out like the Mito canvas set. They look awesome in the renders, then when you see the real product, the font is nothing like the renders. If you can get the product to look like the renders, this will easily be the best keycaps I've ever seen.
It would also be nice to have the option for off-shade modifiers, maybe like a very light grey.
Any pricing info yet?
What were the issues with the Mito's set? Factual information on them may lead to some corrective plan to avoid them to happen in this upcoming production.

I'm European too so I'll definitely get an EU vendor on board if I can :)
These look extremely nice, but I'm worried this will turn out like the Mito canvas set. They look awesome in the renders, then when you see the real product, the font is nothing like the renders. If you can get the product to look like the renders, this will easily be the best keycaps I've ever seen.
Judging by the legends on the Mito Canvas keycaps I don't think the end product legends will look anything like the renders pictured here.

A couple of people have asked about this, and I'm not quite sure why canvas came out a bit blurry. Even though the font is quite narrow, the lines aren't actually that thin. If you look at some of the sublegends on the XDA Milestone sets they are way thinner and they came out razor sharp. XDA have told us that the font shouln't be a problem, and I'll definitely be asking for samples before the set goes into production to make sure. I have asked if they can make some samples before the GB starts, although I'm not sure if they'll agree.

Having some samples before the GB will be a great way to prevent any possible problem with the actual run. It may give people some realistic expectations on what they could actually expect from the final set. In the other hand, renders may mislead people to expect something that it is not actually feasible, an unrealistic expectation that may cause a lot of frustration down the road. An aftermath no GB leader wants.
What were the issues with the Mito's set? Factual information on them may lead to some corrective plan to avoid them to happen in this upcoming production.
I have a Varmilo that comes with factory dye sub pbt that I paid extra for, and they look amazing (my favorite keycaps to date, still)

Do you mind sharing some photos of that keyboard? Did the custom dye-sub come from Varmilo? How much did it cost you?
Thanks for the post. I came into this scene when that Mito's set already got the reputation of being vaporware, and I thought people have bene very happy with his XDA sets, so I had no idea.

Also, have you thought about using a third party to handle the funds, like Massdrop? Will obviously cut into profits, but lots of scams with groupbuys were people go missing with active groupbuys. I wouldn't mind a slight increase in price for the insurance of a refund if things don't work out, or things fall through.
From what I understand blank keycaps are manufactured by one company and the dye-subbing is done by another, similar to how ePBT dye-subs Gateron blanks. There could well be multiple companies that dye-sub XDA keycaps. I know for a fact that the people I'm in contact with manufactured XDA Milestone and Cablecardesigns' XDA groupbuy. I've been told they did Massdrop's groupbuys too, but I can't confirm that. Regardless, look at these sublegends on XDA Milestone, they're way thinner than Canvas and came out really sharp. Whether Canvas was a different manufacturer or MD rushed them IDK, but thin fonts are definitely within their capabilities.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/8umTbBd.jpg)Also, have you thought about using a third party to handle the funds, like Massdrop? I will be running this through a Vendor. Given the amount of interest this has gotten I definitely wouldn't be able to run this on my own :))
Quality assurance of the full supply chain involved sounds like a huge challenge for this set and its GB leader. The qa chain in this is only designer-vendor-manufacturer. What is the problem exactly?
Aren't those sublegends printed? The maim legends are dyesubed? The sublegends are indeed printed. With dye sublimation technique.

XDA(or whichever company is making XDA caps, not sure if they share a name) is the only point of contact, and they provide dye sublimated keycaps for money. The QA chain is as simple as possible when a vendor is involved.Quality assurance of the full supply chain involved sounds like a huge challenge for this set and its GB leader. The qa chain in this is only designer-vendor-manufacturer. It appears that the caps are manufactured by one company and the die-sublimation is performed by one, of some, other company / individual. The main issue being the die sublimation part. The issue I see is that if the OP does not know which one is going to participate in this, it is not clear how the quality of the legends may be warranted.
We should let the involved parts alone, it is enough for now that someone has raised the concern about the legends. I am pretty sure the OP GB leader will take proper care of it.I'm pretty sure that the author was already interested in the quality of the product.

Well Canvas wasn't the only problem child; dev/tty didn't have the same level of issue with the legends basically being completely different, but quality control wasn't really there, with random legends being slightly misaligned (varying from set to set).
Also, anywhere we can get notifications when this goes live, or just have to follow this thread? Thanks.
Please generate a render of Katakana alphas & base icon modifiers in TKL layout. I know I want base icon modifiers but not sure if base alphas or katakana is better for it. Thank you :thumb:
I'll do one with katakana/icon mods anyway, it might not be TKL though.
I want this so badly... GB, please!
Guys, I've decided to switch to Cherry profile. The keys will be made by GMK, pad printed, the legends are too thin to doubleshot. Everything will be put together into one set to meet MOQ, 500 keys total. Price will be $400+shipping from my house. Sorry for the inconvenience.Come on I’m sure you can do better than this... this is way to obvious :P

Oh, yes 1st of April :)
Is there an estimate to when this will become available? Maybe August?
Does anybody know if XDA moulds exist for homing bars or bumps yet?
Jokes aside, would you consider splitting the Accent kit and Compatibility kits into Text version and Icon version like how Canvas did it? Canvas has Extra text mod vs Extra Icon mod and Bauhaus Text vs Bauhaus Icon and I picked up myself both icon kits. Personally I only want the Icon mods so with the kits in Oblique as they are, half of the keys (the text ones) are of no use to me. And since you only have 'Control' key in text, obviously they would need to be in the 'Icon' version of those kits should you agree to splitting.
XDA have agreed to make some dye-sub samples of the font before the groupbuy. There probably won't be much happening until those samples arrive.
There is a lot of overlap between the two sets of mods in the compatibility and accent kits. Splitting the compatibility kit would leave 23 of the 34 keys, while it would leave 26 of the 35 for the accent kit. The difference isn't that big, an if I leave the sets as is we'd hit a higher MOQ, so there won't be that much difference in price. I really don't want to add another two kits since we already have so many, so I think I'll leave them as is for now. If pricing really is too steep I might reconsider this after I get some quotes closer to the GB.
Is it only me, or the mod's legends look darker and more saturated than the alpha's?

XDA just emailed me these pictures
I'll take more photos when the samples arrive in Ireland.
These were just printed on some spare blanks so some legends are in the wrong places, but it should give a good idea of the dye sub quality ;D

I think it's just the light because a bunch of the mods are printed on spacebar profile caps, but I'll see for sure when they get here.
Looks pretty good. Only criticism I would have, are the -, +, =, <, > symbols. They look out of place, like it's a different font size. Think it would look a lot more uniform if they matched with other symbols, similar to Varmilo (https://i.imgur.com/2G5nFNh.jpg).
You're the creative one here -- and doing a fabulous job!!
One nit pick, it seems like the + and = could be a bit more "oblique"...
Less this: = +
and more this: = +
or this: = +
Love the set regardless!
...
The tiny "Alt" printing seems a bit too bold but still readable to me. I think you nailed the white pantone too.
What's the optimistic ETA for when the sample arrives at your door and the official GB opening?
...
The Pantone colour isn't even matched for these samples, this is just XDA's stock light grey colour :)). Although it does look very close in the photos.
...
Others have pointed out the tiny 'alt' being too bold, I think ⌘ is also too bold compared to your render, please check and confirm. Other than that, the legend looks awesome :thumb: And 1 last thing, the enter/return button is horribly tilted :o
...
I will be requesting quotes in the next couple of days, so if anyone wants any changes made to the layouts in the OP (in terms of compatibility) please let me know ASAP.

I'm leaving out all 3rd legends because it cuts down on keys and it looks cleaner IMO. So [{ and ]} are both in the base alphas, and the '? and +* keys were designed without the tertiary legends.
The second \| key is to fill an ISO keyboard without the ISO kits, since both ISO keys output \ on a US layout ;D .

Alright, but the ANSI brackets keys cannot be properly used in other layouts where the primary keys are the curly brackets and not the square ones.

What does everyone think about doing F-keys up to F18? Maybe an add-on kit? I've seen some Mac-focused keyboards that make use more f-keys like this one:

It seems nice, but not a requirement.

When can we get more photos? Any chance of A/B-ing the colours with an AEKii set?

Are additional Katakara homing key planned?
It would be cool.
Sorry if me English isn't very good.
Somehow I didn't see the "Courage" key until now. Made me chuckle hard especially since I love the AirPods which came from that phrase.

Very excited! Is there a timeline for when the GB will run?
I know you mentioned that some of the glyphs were different from the AEK in the original post, but it wasn't until I saw the samples that I realized how odd the J looks. Is there any way the J could be tweaked to look more like the J on the AEK?

Yep, I'll try and tweak as many of them as possible before before submitting the designs for production. You should've seen it like two months ago, back then it wasn't just the J that looked awful :))

Those kind of layouts are exactly why I created the blanks kit :)) .
F13-15 are what Apple calls print screen, scroll lock, and pause; so you'd need up to F16-20 to support your Cinque. I don't think there is really enough demand to warrant adding those keys, so you'll have to do with blanks or novelties I'm afraid.
An HHKB custom render would be awesome! (X60, Duck Viper etc.)

Collected the samples from the sorting office today, and there's way more keys than I expected ;D. They did both base and katakana alphas, and both text and icon mods. These were printed on leftover keys so some keys are a bit warped, some have smudges, and most of the mods are on spacebar profile keys.
I'll take some proper photos tomorrow in daylight, and I'll do a proper comparison with my AEK too at some stage. For now, here's the best my phone's camera could do ;D.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/gZcrcFk.jpg?1)

The groupbuy is expected to run in June through zFrontier, MyKeyboard.eu, Dixie Mech, and MechKeys.ca. Pricing has not been finalised yet but based on the manufacturer's quotes we are looking at some great prices, even compared to other XDA groupbuys.

Pretty much my only desire.
Line thickness is just perfect, don't mess with it.
Thinner line is prone to sublimating quality defects and would look like gray and not black.

Seems like this is a contra? how do you like it?
I'd love to see an approach like Pulse R3 went with, with the Hobbyist kits. As-is, I'd literally have to buy compatibilities solely for a 1.5u backspace only. I was very pleased with the Hobbyist kits, in that it covered all mods for many boards, including the basics that all boards require. Instead of an additional set, it was a replacement modifier kit for many layouts.
Just wanted my opinion out there, as I don't think I can stomach a lot for a single key, and feel there could very well be a different approach.

Being that this set is full-flat profile XDA, the amount of compatibility keys is greatly reduced and they can usually be included in a single set without much to-do and added cost (only extra work is a different legend on a standard key that is row-indifferent). If you look at a lot of the existing blank XDA sets you see 130-140+ keys per set which have vast compatibility options. What specific key(s) are you worried about adding extra unnecessary cost(s)?

I was very pleased with the Hobbyist kits, in that it covered all mods for many boards, including the basics that all boards require. Instead of an additional set, it was a replacement modifier kit for many layouts.

Pulse doing that isn't anything new; most modern SA sets have always had compatibility sets.
Anyway, it doesn't matter since this is a flat profile, so the keys needed is reduced dramatically.
I think that it was not a good way of splitting the kits. If you wanted to have a tkl with control as capslock, you would end up with a bunch of duplicate keys like ansi enter, backspace, shifts, tab etc. It was only good for wkl/hhkb60% boards and less than ideal for everyone else.I'd love to see an approach like Pulse R3 went with, with the Hobbyist kits. Actually, it was extremely different in the case of pulse.
The Hobbyist kits allowed you to NOT buy the base mod kit. They included the basic keys like enter, tab, etc... That's different that any other SA set I've seen
Definitely in as well. Will be buying 5 kits or so ( RIP wallet)

Well it's XDA. Not sure what kits you got in mind but I had like 5-7 kits with the Canvas groupbuy and that was around 100-120$

Update time:hope the new samples turn out great ;)
zFrontier have brought forward some potential issues with our manufacturer, so we are switching to a different dye-sub manufacturer. This means that the samples aren't really useful any more. zF are in the process of requesting new samples and quotes from this new manufacturer. Because this new manufacturer doesn't do dip-dyeing the accent keys will also be coloured plastic.
Also, with Canvas R2 coming soon, probably not long after Serika, we will try to launch this sooner than previously expectedTM.
We will still be running through zFrontier, MyKeyboard.eu, Dixie Mech, and MechKeys.ca ;D

Wait, why run sooner if Canvas is running? Wont' that conflict since this is the same profile, etc?
Either way, I'm very excited. I much prefer this over Canvas.

We're hoping to run before Canvas rather than at the same time
Does anyone know what this would look like on a white HHKB? I want to put it on mine, but don't know if it'll be too dark or if I should paint the board
Could a SP-DSA 6u space bar may fit in this set?
Could a SP-DSA 6u space bar may fit in this set?
This would be the best solution, but it might be difficult to match the colour exactly
Could a SP-DSA 6u space bar may fit in this set?
This would be the best solution, but it might be difficult to match the colour exactly
It is a shame. But I also think that the finishing of SP's molds do not really match the XDA's one, so it may be an unfitting solution, anyway.

It would still look a lot better than a stock Topre spacebar IMO
I suggest to add a 2.25 and 2.75 keys to the blank set.

For what? if you need it as space you have the 40's compatibility or the space bars kit, and the "one more thing..." work great if you don't want "Return" or "shift" on your key

For what? if you need it as space you have the 40's compatibility or the space bars kit, and the "one more thing..." work great if you don't want "Return" or "shift" on your key
The blank kit is the most flexible solution for 40's and 50's. Including the small "space bars" turns it into a one-kit-for-most-layouts solution. Buying multiple kits to populate one layout makes no sense for such small keyboards.

You could say the same thing about people using WKL and HHKB layouts having to buy the spacebar kit "just" for the 7u spacebar

The blanks kit is intended for weird layouts that the other kits just don't cover. Since they are included in other kits I'm not going to add them. If I did I'd have to add full 40% support to the blanks kit and that's just not what it's meant for.
If you want 2.25/2.75 spacebars without the 40% kit you could get the spacebars kit, it'll be a bit cheaper ;D

Hey, I'm looking forward to this gb going live, but I do have one more question that I think it's always worth bringing up:
AFAIK, XDA currently do not currently offer homing bumps or bars, only scooped homing keys. Is there ANY chance of getting bumps or bars on this set? Can you ask the manufacturer if it's something they could do for us, or in general for the future?
Heh, I'm not asking for much eh? ;D

They don't currently offer them. I'm not sure if they will in future since it would require new moulds and bumps are generally awkward when it comes to dye subbing.
If you prefer to have bumps you could do a mod like this (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/6r3n1t/ball_bearing_homing_keys/) using a ball bearing as a homing key.
Knowing this set was on the horizon, I finally threw my XDA Canvas on my daily driver to see if I really wanted to invest in another XDA set ( I previously only put them on a tester and wasn't impressed) and I find the deep dish homing caps to have a better feel than the regular caps. Have you considered doing the whole set in deep dish? :eek:Hey, I'm looking forward to this gb going live, but I do have one more question that I think it's always worth bringing up:

I guess it's possible, but I'm not sure how it would affect lead times. The factory probably have way more moulds for standard 1u keys than deep dish keys. The other issue is that you lose homing keys. It's not something I'm doing because a lot of people prefer the flatness of XDA, but if you want to feel free to buy like 8 homing kits :))....Knowing this set was on the horizon, I finally threw my XDA Canvas on my daily driver to see if I really wanted to invest in another XDA set ( I previously only put them on a tester and wasn't impressed) and I find the deep dish homing caps to have a better feel than the regular caps. Any word on how long the GB will run? I'll be offline for a long weekend in the beginning of June and want to make sure I can get in on this.

Is there any plans/hope for an add-on kit with windowed keys?
So what company is doing the dyesub work? I didn't see it on the front page. The only company doing quality dyesub is Signature Plastics. I'm not talking about the profile or keycap, but the legend printing. The dyesub work coming out of China factories is junk.Pretty sure SP doesn’t do xda profile. And the dye sub on my xda canvas seems decent so far (or maybe I’m just not picky enough)

Thanks for the info. When it comes to dyesub I will wait to see actual samples from the factory producing them.
Samples were posted earlier in the thread?
Not sure if they just went missed.

I believe those were from the old factory, which he said later he won't be using. I don't know if he's said if he found a new one.
Can you just add the "^" + "~" keycap to the international set? That would make it perfect.
XDA canvas R2 launched on Massdrop, I guess this will give you guys more time to prepare for the GB? These sets are very similar but both of them are unique. I want them both, and many others would probably appreciate given more time to gather the funds :) . /watched.You replied just as I was typing out my update, see the last paragraph ;D
At the moment I'm not sure when we'll finally start this groupbuy. We had hoped to start before Canvas R2, but in the end we couldn't get everything ready in time and Canvas launched today. IMO running alongside Canvas isn't a good idea so we might have to wait until after. I haven't really discussed this with the vendors yet though, so I can't say for sure.

zFrontier has the new samples in hand and took these amazing photos.
The dye-sub quality looks excellent, although I haven't seen it in person yet. It has similar alignment issues to the previous samples, which is expected since I sent them the same design files.
One thing I did notice was an error on the ⌫ and ⌧ keys where only one half of the cross is actually printed. I have no idea why so I'll be bringing this up so it doesn't happen in the final product.

The yellow is because these were photographed in sunlight I think. AFAIK these aren't colour matched anyway, the final keyset will be the same light grey as the AEK.where will this be released? GH or MD?
It will be run through Dixie Mech for US, MyKeyboard.eu for EU, MechKeys.ca for Canada, and zFrontier for Asia/Australia and the rest of the world.

The ones in the AEK do not have the tertiary legends. It also makes supporting more languages easier, as for example, shift+7890 is /()= on both German and Spanish, but German has {[]} on the atlgr layer and Spanish does not.
It will be cheaper and is more authentic.

Waiting is the correct move - this is not to say the projects are tied to each other at all, but maybe looking at like a mid July launch whilst the GB for the Modern M0110 is undergoing would be a good idea.
Ooooh, shiny. Me like.
A stepped 1.75u ctrl-key in the accents-kit would make it even better. :)

Thank you for your answer. I respect your decisions design-wise; however, it is really hard to believe that some extra die spots could make the set any more expensive. kamisamamizu summed up my reasoning pretty well. Take a look at this German AEK for example, it has no tertiary legends:Show Image(https://deskthority.net/w/images/6/60/M0115D_ISO_front.JPG)
Besides, I'd rather not make the international kit any larger or more expensive than it already is for fear of it not reaching MOQ.

Any updated ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)? No chance this will be ready in a month or so. Even if the GB were live today, it would probably be ~ 6 months to get it.

The Canvas drop on massdrop has an estimated ship date of November 6th and that drop is already active.
I much prefer this set to canvas. Is the issue the manufacturing or just the problem with hitting MOQ with canvas running now?

After a loooooon hesitation, I will join for the japanese alphas! they look too nice not to get them!
wild thought: I wanna see this set on a modern M0110 :p
Does anyone know how the cool grey color of this compares to XDA Milestone, the grey of XDA Canvas' modifiers, or the common grey blank XDA kits? I assume it doesn't match any of them but I'm curious if this kit's color would clash with any of the others.

zFrontier has the new samples in hand and took these amazing photos.
Ooooh, shiny. Me like.
A stepped 1.75u ctrl-key in the accents-kit would make it even better. :)
I might add that, I'll have to see what prices are like first before deciding
+1 for stepped keys in the accent kit :D

Definitely interested in a stepped kit as well!
^ except its XDA, not DSA...
Those look amazing imo. Are you going to accept?
Ooh looks good! Any more pics of the icon mods?
The new samples arrived here, and I have to say I'm impressed. I was worried the quality mightn't be quite as good as the old ones, but it's actually a bit better ;D.

Not sure if anyone cares to see what katakana look like on a dirty XT layout board, but it's currently the only Cherry board I have with a numpad :)).
Looks really good! Still eager to join!
They seem a bit too thin to me, but maybe I'm just used to the fat Cherry legends; it's been so long since I've had my AEK that I can't remember the weights of the font.
I'm definitely in for a few different kits. I've been waiting for XDA Canvas for a long time, but I held back in anticipation of this GB.

Same here,
XDA Canvas is a nice set indeed,
but the more I look at this set the more it grows in me.
I might be spending more than I should on this set lol
this is just gorgeous ;D
Sorry for the off topic but I'm unable to see any of the renders in the main post.
Were they removed? I saw the photos of the samples at reddit without problems.
Tried several browsers, private mode, cleaning cache, to no avail.
I’ve got some money burning a hole in my pocket waiting for this GB to launch.

It seems to be problem with imgur,
if you middle click those small square,
it should redirect you to the actual photos.
when and where will this launch?
This thread has now became my first-to-check thread when I woke up :)Sorry for the off topic but I'm unable to see any of the renders in the main post.

Imgur had accidentally blocked Geekhack, everything should be back to normal now though ;Dwhen and where will this launch?
It'll be on Dixie Mech, MyKeyboard.eu, MechKeys.ca, and zFrontier really soon.

I will submit a GB thread later and lock this one once that's approved.

I’m guessing the missing line in the Delete key has been fixed?

Any idea how long the GB is gonna run for?
We haven't actually discussed a closing date (I knew there was something I forgot :)) ), but I hope to have a nice long GB period
