My First Artisan Sculpt
« on: Fri, 01 February 2019, 00:22:40 »
Hello! This is my first try at sculpting with monster clay! I have sculpted with sculpey and mud clay before, but nothing this tiny! I wasnt sure I could do it! My sculpts have always been large, but Im pretty happy with how this one turned out!

Please allow me to introduce my crazy-eyed turtle/lizard/dinosaur guy :p!

please excuse the lighting, it was taken at night in my bf's work room.

looks great. love the differences in texture. i see influences from a couple lizards.

not sure how familiar you are with the artisan keycap making stuff, but there's a jig called :~$ynth that makes the whole process of making a usable keycap a lot easier.
thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78551.0
available at: https://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/synth

but you could just as easily add one of the lego stems from shapeways to your sculpt (definitely a lot cheaper than :~$ynth)

anyway, congrats. looks great!

It looks good! One thing I would say to be aware of is the height of the keycap, with so many Cherry profile sets out there, it'd be nice if the keycap wasn't too tall.

yeah! I used my bf's esc key from hydro for comparison. His nose just barely goes past. I did make him a little too small in the base though so ill be keeping that in mind when I try a new design :)

just take an mx switch and superglue the stem (in the up position) so it doesn't move. there's your base.

If you have access to 3d printer why dont you give a try zbutt.
https://github.com/imyownyear/Z-Butt
Its open source. And probably a lot cheaper than buying an already made system.
Oh, join the discord too. Theres a lot of talented makers there.

Pretty neat! Always remember to keep check on the size of your sculpt. Synth is a very useful tool so make sure you get it! Your sculpt is good. It has the details. Look forward to see more progress from you!

I like that skin texture!

An easy trick for sculpting on the L2K is to put a stock keycap on and then trace the outline with an xacto knife. Then you can remove the cap and  be sure to stay inside that outline to guarantee there won't be any clearance issues with neighboring keys.

He's actually not that tall. It's just a hair higher than the escape key on my bf's hydro set.
