I know it’s likely a big ask - but if there was an option for a ‘premium’ option with a screen that would be incredible.

Was there insufficient interest in the IC for an OLED addition?

+1 even if it's like a secondary module or like a new pcb I need to swap out after the initial GB

Not an ortho user, I'd jump on this if its staggered.

But cool design!

I don't know if it was an update but it says there will be a staggered plate option

This is part of a new design I’m testing out:

Show Image

The goal being: Make the cheapest Case Possible, while also retaining the feel of the original design.

The bottom and rear are designed to be cut from 3mm Acrylic Sheets. I also have those in, just waiting for the FR4 Testing Plates and then I’ll have a full Build ready for evaluation!

Since I have access to a laser cutter, I'm quite keen on this 3mm acrylic panel idea of yours. Sharing design files would allow others such as myself to laser-engrave text/imagrey/designs/patterns. One important thing for me is the possibility to cut holes on the bottom panel for screw-in case feet, since I like my orthos to have an angle. :)

I remember in the original mech market thread you mentioned a staggered layout/pcb would be an option. Is that still happening or is it exclusively ortho now?

Just waiting on the new, "better" prototypes right now.

Slow and steady!  Hoping to get us to GB by the end of the year.  I want to do this board justice!

Is this a 40% planck like on the bottom or a 50% Preonic type? I’m in 100% for a 50%. I’m out for a 40%.

As a whole, The Ave. is a 50% Keyboard.

The main typing area is a 12-Column/4-Row Layout just like the 40% Planck. To the left is a 4-Key “Macro” column, and the top is where a Rotary Encoder, Esc Key, And 3 Extra right hand keys sit.

The_GB:

First off, Price is still being worked on, mainly in shipping and packaging.  I'm really wanting to do my dream board right and get some really nice packaging.  Unboxing experiences may not appeal or be of a priority to some.  But they are to me.

- As of right now though, the Price is estimated to be ~$320-$350USD + USPS Shipping

- GB is set to be live Late November 2019.

- This First Round will be a LIMITED production run of 50 Kits.

Case Options:

- Top and Bottom Ave. Case (Same Color for each part)
     - Silver
     - Rose Gold
or
     - Midnight Aqua Grey

Plate Options:

- 1.5mm Sandblasted Brass (Staggered Option will also be available)

or
- 1.6mm FR4 (PCB Material) Plate (CHEAPO Option)

Kit Set to Include:

- Full Top and Bottom Ave. Case
- Top and Bottom Ave. Switch Plate
- Top and Bottom Ave. PCBs
- All Connectors for Assembly
- x1 Rotary Encoder
- x2 Through-Hole RGB LEDs
- x4 Rubber Bumpons

-***Staggered-PCB & Plate Options will also be available but at an additional Cost (TBD)

- GB will run Until all 50 units are sold*

The Most Recent Progress:

- Waiting on Full and Final Prototypes to arrive later this month from the manu.
- Factory anodizing color chip samples are also set to arrive along with prototype.
- Needing to reach out to a local printing shop to look into getting custom box/foam cut.
- Newest prototype PCBs are in the mail now and will test fit and finish with prototypes later this month.

Damn looks amazing. I know I'm lame for preferring staggered layouts but this is the first board that makes me even kind of want ortho  :p.

I appreciate you keeping it different with your designs, even if they're not for me personally I always enjoy seeing what you come up with :)

I’m thinking of doing maybe 5-10 custom powder coat ones. At an additional cost of course. I need to get a quote this week from a local body shop I’ve done business with before.

And I’m still thinking on the sale type I want to do. FCFS is easier speed and invoice management wise, but as someone with slower than average Internet speed, a Raffle is something I always personally preferred.  Raffle also seems the “fairest”.

I’ll should probably make the form and take opinions from everyone. I will, however, announce a decision on it a good bit of time before the GB.

Thank you for considering different options to make everyone happy. I do also feel that a raffle will be the best method, but I can understand it may be a hassle to you. Anyway, I vouch for the form :)

I love your design and concept.  I just wish it was in a more practical format like TKL or even 100+%.  I find a lot of these boards are really pretty and great fun to build but ultimately you end up using something else to work on.

That said, I love that you are doing something different from the standard 60% that is now just saturated with keebs.

I think it’s judt a matter of getting used to whatever layout you want to get to get used to.

I have written all of the code, done all of the CAD, and PCB design of The Ave., as well as all my other boards and projects, solely with 3 various 40% keyboards. (Prime_e, Zlant, Let’s Split).

They are extremely practical to me and I’ve never wished they were any more than they were to be begin with.

Just practice, and adjustment. :)

Excited to see all the progress. Very interested.

Lol thank you :D

It was my first dive into Sheet Metal Design. So I have no idea how bad or good the design is.

It was/is a fun thing to get into though.  Interested to work on it in the near future. Especially with seeing and trying out the SKB boards.

Wasn't a big fan when I saw the IC for the first time, but this design has grown on me. Just wish there was purple now  :)), maybe in the future runs.
Will you be supplying the plate files and whatnot?
The industrial look with exposed screws seem to fit the bent steel version as well. Really liking this board now!

I would really love this design style in a larger format like TKL.  The top row could be used to add so much more.  Maybe also an LCD and USB ports.

did you ever share a kle layout to what the staggered option would look like?

Here’s the layout we are currently looking at:

Still not 100% set on it but it seems to be okay with most people.

if you could make the split spacebars 2.75, 1.75, 1.75 it would be possible to get them in convex. i dont think GMK makes a 1.5u convex spacebar. just mentioning this because i know ortho is typically monoprofile

The "Feet" will be a Sheet of Laser-Cut Cork, Covering the entirety of the bottom (Minus Screw Holes)

The 1.5u isnt meant to be convex, I colored it that way just to show what space would be taken up/filled by the various key sizes.  the 2.75/2u keys are meant to be the main spacebars. :)

Prototypes have been completed!

They are on there way to me now for evaluation!

I’ll have better pics next week but here are some with that classic, Less than perfect, Factory Lighting lol

Important side note:

Fill out This Staggered Ave. Google Form to help us decide on what layout the Staggered PCB/Plate Options will have. We need to decided this ...fairly quickly lol
