geekwatch: a Discord bot powered by geekhack
« on: Wed, 02 December 2020, 21:33:56 »
Hello members,

I've developed a simple Discord bot that detects new threads and replies posted within geekhack and relays them as embeds to text channels or direct messages on Discord. If you're always on Discord and would like to somewhat unify the two platforms, feel free to check out geekwatch.

geekwatch essentially monitors and tracks according to your interests, whether it's to check for newly submitted topics within the Interest Check category or an OP's response within a thread itself. The bot will constantly check for updates and send you notifications.

The bot currently runs 24/7 on an extremely light server with a simple database, however I will personally try my best to scale accordingly if the demand ever calls for it.

If you are interested and would like more information, you can find it in the link below. There you will find the full write-up with the list of commands as well as the invitation link.

Here are examples of the embeds that you may receive:

Criticism and feedback are welcome.

For those sticking around I apologize for the lack of updates. Bot is still alive and well, here are some changes:

Changelog  v?:
- tracker list and help commands will now only be returned via DM
- tracker list will now include a clickable direct link to associated channel (none if DM)
- added an error message for when geekhack's servers are unreachable
- improved monitoring flow (monitoring delay remains the same however speed should be slightly improved)
- bug fixes

Preferences for either topics and boards can now be set with just ".gw follow". I've combined the two in hopes of better simplicity. The old "watch" commands can still be used.

I've also had to make adjustments to the current database to reflect these changes however your previous preferences have been safely migrated.

Changelog v??:
- merged "follow" and "watch" functions
- added helpful text to message upon successful follow
- adjusted commands list
- more bug fixes

imgur -> Discord embedding is currently broken. Until they fix this issue, messages that include imgur hosted content will be sent imageless

Looks to be working now

I believe the bot is currently slightly broken, it doesn't seem to catch all posts.

I've looked over the logs and pushed some fixes. If there are still any issues feel free to reach out!

Still working on getting it working to post in my Discord that I set a special channel just for GW, but just get DM's of watched/new items to drool over.
