MX Clear Switches
« on: Thu, 31 January 2013, 10:55:19 »
Does Cooler Master have any plans to offer a board with Cherry MX Clear switches? The MX Green version of the QFR shows that you're not opposed to offering more uncommon switches, so is there any chance that you'd try offering Clears as well?

I'd like to see a CM with clears, I think this is likely, as in the CES video I saw of CM, they pride (read: Differentiate) themselves on offering uncommon switch types, like greens.

We are always looking at offering new switch types, but the only problem is our distributors already dislike us for so many SKU offerings :) We have to keep it within reason, and if the market demand is there, we wouldn't be opposed to it.  Fow now, we'll be putting a lot of effort into green switches and educating them to the masses.

How about more exotic switches, like mx clears or whites? Clears are the more popular "modded" switches on here.

The biggest reason why I don't yet own any CMStorm Quickfire Rapid is that the Nordic layout offerings are only in Black or Red MX switches.
If it had been available in Brown or Blue switches, I would have already bought one.
If I had heard that it would be available in MX Clear switches, I would have pre-ordered and camped outside the store!

Ergo clears would also be very nice. Cherry said they'd be willing to make them if the demand was high enough.

I don't know, I have more keyboards with greens, and I like the whites (which feel very similar). I've never had a KB with clears, but I have two with ergo clears and I still like them. They're my go-to tactile nonclicky switch.

Aren't whites extremely close to being "albino" greens, which in itself is just a heavier blue?

7bit called them "albino greens" in the first GB for them. After people started receiveng them, and reviews and comparisons were done. I would say they feel almost the same, but the white is not as loud.

I don't think "ergo white" is a good term, "light white" has been proposed, but I have always preferred "white light" instead.

It would be awesome if switches could be installed like old video game console cartridges.  I'm not an engineer and don't know this is feasible but that would be a game changer.

I'm no engineer either, but I do have that sort of leaning. It'd be possible to do something like this, but you'd have some problems to overcome:
how to make it so you don't pull the switch out when you're changing keycaps
how to get a good contact between the switch and the PCB

Both of these are not insurmountable, but I would say that it's unlikely for CM to do this.

Rajiv, it's so awesome that you take requests from the community so easily and quickly. Kudos to you guys. According to some polls and our recent large group buys, clears was the most popular of all switches. Of course, this is only amongst us here at GH, I don't even think the general consumer will even know what a clear switch is.

We feel that while we can cater to the enthusiast community, we can also work on educating the masses on why different mechanical switch types are good.  Our competitors are traditionally pigeon-holding people into one (blue or red or black), but we want to provide options.  We're taking the same philosophy on our mice with sensors and grip types as well.

I agree; I find they are among the more friendly and responsive bunch of people around.

I don't even begin to understand why certain brands (eg Rosewill) get any business outside of cashiers in supermarket. Their keyboards are boring, lack better functions, aren't priced so competitively and it is not as if they make an effort to promote or foster relations with the geek community.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Is there a newsletter that we can subscribe for the new releases of QFR / QFS products?

IMO you guys did a great job with the QFR, I think you have the biggest shares on the TKL market.

I’m eagerly waiting for the clear switches version.

BTW, just a feedback to make it the perfect board, would you guys consider changing the mounting plate so that we can mod the switches without desoldering?

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36907.330

I think you can dominate the TKL market ☺

Any updates on this, didn't the switch tester have clears?

Hi, first post on this forum!

After testing the CM switch tester, I've just bought a g80-3000 (ISO) with clears, and I am waiting for it to arrive home.

I hope I did a good decision, I am under the impression this one won't be easy to sell if I don't like it.

I have an old (works with some annoyances) chicony with blues, so I will try both stock clear, and ergo clears.

Yea, I love the browns, but I'd love to get my hands on some MX clear or ergo clear KBs!

I hope they make it available in Australia too when they release it.

Should we just consider this to be a lost cause?

Not to necro an old thread or anything but... Cooler Master, any update on this? I think a lot of us would love to see an QFR with clears.

I think most people in the market for a TKL with clears already got a KUL. Seems like Cooler Master is heading toward Topre instead with the Novatouch.

I would say, only because CM Storm had squandered the opportunity to make a QFR with Clears before KUL did.

Maybe I'm just anal.. but I like the form factor and case of the QFR better than the KUL. I believe the QFR is close to 10mm smaller depth wise and 5-6mm smaller width wise. Also... QFRs are cheaper... sometimes by as much as 50 dollars depending on the availability of switches.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread again, but has anyone heard anything about this ever happening? Or if it did, might it happen again? I can't bring myself to pay $130 for the KUL when the QFR is half that price... If CM could do this for $75 I would buy 2 of them for what I plan to pay for a Pok3r... What a missed opportunity!!!
