Title: Steam Summer Sale 2014
Post by: Puddsy on Thu, 19 June 2014, 12:36:48
If you see a good deal post it here.

I won't buy a game unless one of my friends has said that it's good, and I consider a lot of you my friends, so have at.

I bought The Witcher 2 enhanced edition for $4 US. Get on that.

Well, you do probably not consider me your friend :)), but far cry 3 at 75% off is a very good deal. Personally I'm waiting to see if dark souls 2 comes on the daily sales or flash sales!

If you don't have Hotline Miami yet, it's a steal at $1.49 - highly recommended: http://store.steampowered.com/app/219150/

Stache- now that you have Witcher 2, head over to GoG to get a DRM free copy of it plus some other goodies: http://www.gog.com/witcher/backup

PRO TIP THAT I FORGOT TO MENTION

WAIT FOR IT TO BE A DAILY DEAL UNLESS IT'S THE LAST DAY OF THE SALE

YOU'LL HATE YOURSELF IF YOU DON'T

I did it like 3 times last year, just be patient

I paid $10 for a game I could have payed $3 for.

Flash sales are also equally as good as daily deals!
And there's even more reason to get in on them since you have less time to make your choice!

I still don't get why the prices aren't just global.

They've got absolutely no reason (that I know of) to treat the countries differently when it's a digital product.

This might not be much use to you but the free racing game 'Race Room Experience' is pretty cool, though its still in some kind of alpha state (like AC) I signed up like 3 months ago or something and they just emailed me a free code for 700 in game points, which bought me two alright GT class cars and Laguna Seca Raceway!

Oh I know, I have that game downloaded and play it from time to time. I dont really want to spend money on it though, so I am stuck with the competitions they put up. I don't know if it is gone but the most recent races on suzuka were awesome. I love that race track, possibly because it was an amazing drift track back when I played forza and was a 1337 drifter.

There are always around 5-6 competitions available to play. You don't have to own the tracks or cars that are in them. Only problem is the competitions only run for a week or so and then new ones go up.

Don't pay less that 60% off!

??

bad wording..

does that mean..  don't pay less than 60% off,  as in we should pay more than the 60% off price

OR does it mean.. don't pay  UNLESS it's 60% off or less.

I think nearly all the games I have, I have finished them with just my two hands (one on the mouse, one on the keyboard).

Except the few car racing ones - for those I used a foot too (on the pedals).

Has anyone played Divinity Original Sin? It's still in beta and launches at the end of this month, but it looks really good.

I've only seen a few YouTube reviews about it and people seemed pleased, but there just aren't enough reviews to really be sure.

The general rule of thumb for Steam sales is to wait for a game to be a daily deal, flash sale or community choice.  Those will be the lowest prices.  Otherwise wait for the last day to buy any games that didn't end up getting spotlighted.  And yes, 75%+ off or GTFO.

This is not always accurate. There are always hidden sales that go up to 90% off, but aren't flash or daily deals. Usually games that didn't sell too well, but sometimes you find some gems. Portal II was .99 in one sale, I got Binding of Issac + the DLC for .49 each.

I know it sounds silly but hear me out... EuroTruck Simulator 2 is 85% off for another couple of hours and if you've got a gamepad, or even better a real wheel + pedals, it's a hell of a relaxing game, and a pretty great deal for $3.74. Also, last Steam sale they caught everyone by surprise and changed things up on the final day.

Quote
It is no longer the case that you definitively should wait for the last day of the sale to make purchases of games that are not daily deals, flash sales, or community choices! The last day of the sale will most likely be an encore day, where many of the best selling deals will be brought back. During the last major Steam sales, all sale-related discounts were removed except for the handful of encore sales. In short: unless you missed a DD/FS/CC (and are hopeful that it will return during the encore sale), you should buy it on the second-to-last day of the sale - not the last day of the sale.

Excellent! I've got a Fanatec so I get to see a Porsche GT3 wheel while I drive my truck down the highway - picturing an F1 wheel inside the cab of a big rig cracks me up even more :)) ET2 is a surprisingly fun game IMO... I love ETS2, I've been thinking about getting a fanatec wheel just for that and asetto corsa. Playing on mouse and keyboard definitely takes away from the experience, not to mention makes it much harder to drive manual.

Assetto Corsa + the Fanatec 911 GT3 is so incredibly awesome, the force feedback in that game works so well with the belt drive and the load cell in the elite pedals really makes it feel like braking a real car! It's a shame AC didn't win the community choice last round, hopefully it gets the 50% off sale at some point (if it doesn't go on sale further, I'd say it's still worth $27)

Fanatecused to offer a package for $260 + shipping that was only a little more than a Logitech G27 setup and it's definitely nicer... looks like they bumped the price to $300 though :(

http://us.fanatec.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=562

I have seen some people sport the G27 wheel + Fanatec CSR Elite pedals to save some coin.

Everyone who for some reason doesn't already have Half Life 2 should install it and play it right now.  (hopefully this doesn't apply to anyone)

I've been wanting to get HL1 and HL2 for a while. I've still not played them.

People aren't exaggerating when they say that they're some of the greatest games of all time. I just started a new game on HL2, playing through on hard difficulty makes the atmosphere incredible. A real sense of urgency when you're getting chased by the Combine and serious relief when you make it out of an area into a safe spot.

Glad you're enjoying it!  :)  It's so true.  Even for being an older game with "poorer" graphics, it's just so intense.  I love it.

I picked it up because I do have a wheel(although it's an F1 style wheel....) and I used to play 18WoS when I was a kid, and there's something nice and relaxing about just driving stuff from A to B.
Excellent! I've got a Fanatec so I get to see a Porsche GT3 wheel while I drive my truck down the highway - picturing an F1 wheel inside the cab of a big rig cracks me up even more :)) ET2 is a surprisingly fun game IMO... I love putting on a local radio station while I drive (internet radio FTW!) and the satisfaction of backing a trailer into a tricky spot using just your mirrors is so great
this is making me want to break out the wheel and get in some virtual miles!

I love ETS2, I've been thinking about getting a fanatec wheel just for that and asetto corsa. Playing on mouse and keyboard definitely takes away from the experience, not to mention makes it much harder to drive manual.

Damn.  I think I might get this now, seems really relaxing and fun.  Might need to pick up a wheel at some point too.

I also grabbed the Bioshock pack. I love those games but never had legit before... yeah I know. I haven't played Infinity yet so not a bad deal at all. Also got System Shock2 so I can play it gain without faffing around with getting it going on my old 98 PC when I want to replay it next time.
How can not have HL2 or never played it? That is madness! Sure the vanilla game looks a little dated, but there are a few HD texture packs and so on... as well as LOADS of full conversion mods/stand alone games which use it's resource files that could keep you busy for a really long time. Definitely a great value game.
I'm also on team red. I had to hunt around and add some stuff in wishlist on the slim chance I actually would be selected to win anything LOL.

I hopped on the deus ex train and never looked back.

How can I not have played it? well when I was growing up, we always had like 3 games for PC (no consoles in my house) sonic CD (with ecco the dolphin), Myst, and star wars episode 1 racer. When we finally got deus ex I played the heck out of it.

Now that I can buy my own games I ended up with tons, I just never saw the halflife franchise on sale when I had money to buy it. I did play through portal and portal II though.

I was thinking of getting the stanley parable, but I am still not sure about that one. My old room-mate loved terraria.

Vote thing should be under 'community choice' banner on the main sale page. Voting does earn you cards, so you should find it and do so.
Just saw that DuckTales is on flashsale... mega nostalgia, played the hell out of the original when I was a kid. Kind of tempted.

Stanley Parable... well it's different. It's sort of a non game, not as much so as Dear Esther though in a similar vein.

The DT remake is excellent, I have it for PS3. They redid everything in the exact same art style as from the show, plus hired the original voice actors to reprise their roles for the added cut scenes. It's a short, but really solid platformer.

Oh jeez that's pure insanity!   :p  I will admit to being a complete Elder Scrolls noob when it comes to modding - I've heard of and seen it done many times, but never taken the time to do it myself.  Basically I'd like it look really nice.  I was expecting that requiring just a few mods.  Do you need upwards of 20-50 to accomplish that?

Regardless, a cheat sheet would be helpful.   :thumb:   Thanks!

These would be what I deem vanilla-friendly mods. That means that they won't add a lot of new creatures or quests, just major improvements to graphics and gameplay.

These should get you a long way, when you see pretty pictures of Skyrim etc. it's mostly the work of the enb that is installed. I've found that sharpshooters enb looks great and doesn't hit performance too hard.

That is true, I didn't plan to be able to get it this sale. But it has been close to this on GMG before. Not that low though, this is the lowest I've ever seen it. I'm just not ready to get it till its been out for a while. I'm hoping for some other games in this sale.

I got the Stanley Parable, Tomb Raider GOTY and Natural Selection 2 this time.

Last time I ordered XCOM: Enemy unknown, which I liked enough to order the DLC at full price and Sleeping Dogs, which was great fun.
Also got Antichamber last time but I didn't have the patience to trudge through that one.

Starting to feel like the team color thing is rigged so every team wins at least one day. One team always dominates at least double, except day two where red beat purple in the last moments. Probably because Valve didn't want purple to win again. The active tracking is too wildly uneven for it not to be weighted.

It's pretty good storytelling and the levels are beautifully designed. Especially going down to the beach I marveled at some of the views. At times it has a Witcher 2 vibe going on, a game that I really enjoyed.

I'll take a look and see what is available today when I get back home.

Nice. Make sure to stack up the mods! I originally played skyrim on the 360 too, and got it last summer sale and with over 50 mods, it is a completely new experience!

So far I have picked up Payday 2 and Insurgency. Insurgency seems a lot of fun so far, kind of a mix of BF and CSGO but a bit more realistic too.

Yeah I got it last night, so I think it was 6.85 or something. Should be the same deal that is on now. Yeah it seems pretty challenging. First game I only had 2 kills, but managed to get up to a 1.0 kda after a few hours of play. It seems to be a refreshing change, I haven't played many online fps games recently, after being bored of the standard BF and Cod games..

Out of the few games I've bought, Risk of Rain has been the most enjoyable thus far. But I'm a sucker for any rogue-like.

I also picked up Papers Please, which I don't feel lives up to it's hype. There's just not enough going on gameplay wise to blow my goat and once you get through to the main ending(s) I found myself with no real desire to replay the game due to the learned information voiding the feeling of reward from it's mechanics.

I really wish Wolfenstein and Pixel Piracy would go on sale for 60% off or more.  :(

I need to grab Risk of Rain too...

CS:GO goes for $3 all the time and then we get a flood of wallers and aimbots :/
I pretty much only play ESEA away, but it would be nice to play match making without getting cheated most of the time.

I hope CS:GO goes to $5 or less! Also the forest, hoping it goes $10 or less.
Let's play some GO DUSTIN!!! That's about the only game I play...  :p

I need to grab Risk of Rain too...

CS:GO goes for $3 all the time and then we get a flood of wallers and aimbots :/
I pretty much only play ESEA away, but it would be nice to play match making without getting cheated most of the time.

freakin' why is it not $3 yet... gah........ ... (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/ghost-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862505)

Bought! Almost didn't see that.

Its good, too bad I already bought myself a copy. Do you know if the extra games are tradeable? I might hold onto a copy for a friend

I think the way it works is one person buys the 4 pack then gifts it to the others so I think you can keep it as gift/tradeable in your inventory after you receive it. Not 100% sure tho lol

That's exactly how it works. That's how I've bought both Borderlands games, then just had my friends pay me through paypal.

It's more than worth it. If you like CS at all, you'll probably get $7.50 worth of entertainment out of it in the first couple of days.

Make a wishlist on isthereanydeal.com  (http://www.isthereanydeal.com)so you can get instant notification of sales. You can also check the price history for games across a huge range of sites; CS:GO was last 75% this January and the sale prices this year haven't been as good as last year (when it went to $3.75 every few months)

Typically when things hit Daily or Flash sales, they don't get any cheaper so I wouldn't expect to see CS:GO cheaper during this sale... but who knows, Valve is always changing things up.

So as a simulator it's not ****ty and boring?  Cause The Sims is a simulator but it's interesting cause there's a lot of depth to it.  This is just trains.  I'm not asking if I'll like the genre, I'm asking if it's a ****ty game or if it's well done.  Your answer seems to indicate that it is well done.

I'm kind of eyeing Castle Story (http://store.steampowered.com/app/227860/).

Anyone had any particularly bad experiences with this (considering it is early access)?

Get it!
This is a fine example of early access done right - the team seems to have a solid roadmap, provides regular updates to the game (twice this month alone), they are adding new cars / licensed brands on a regular basis, and it's a freaking fantastic game as is, only getting better! It doesn't have a career more like GT yet and the AI racers & multiplayer are still being worked on, but the physics and sound in this game are second to none (IMO of course). I paid $30 during the Winter Sale and have no regrets. It plays well with a gamepad and is just loads of fun with a proper steering wheel & pedals... about as close to driving any of these cars as I'm likely to get   :))

Yes! Looks like $14.99 is as good as it's gonna get for Transistor and that's fine by me; I really like Bastion & I barely paid for it, so those guys deserve some coin!

Right now there's picture mode, free practice, time trial, drift events, and race events against the computer AI; I don't think the online multiplayer is in yet, nor the career or the drag race modes, but I haven't launched it in a while, so I'll have to check tonight to be sure what's in game currently. The game is also moddable - I've already seen some custom tracks like Joux Plane released for it - so I *think* it's possible for people to make their own race events, if not currently then eventually.

Transistor is a really really well made game..

I've lost the patience for RPGs with age..

BUT I can still recognize a good game.. and transistor is fantastic.. the play mechanics perfectly balance between action and strategy..  much like the new " child-of-light" game..

Gonna be honest, the game itself (story, world feel, etc) so far is great, but god does the combat system suck. It's so sluggish and unresponsive, counterattacks work like 65% and it seems like they are pretty important. Going to see if there's any combat system mods on the Nexus.

In the beginning it is. Since you start out without any moves and need to learn proper countering first.
After you have learned some more (tip, go to the Karate Gym nearby. Especially after finding some Jade statues) you can hold of most groups all by yourself.

I bought skyrim for myself and a friend, he got his in 15 minutes, mine is a 40 hour download, assuming I give it 100% of my net and cut the rest of the house off. 45gb would feel like a career choice.

Honestly this sale was a disappointment. So many Greenlight indie titles and early access games wasting Flash Sale space, with most of the AAA titles not being more than 33-40% off. I mean I picked up some decent titles, but nothing that was really on my wishlist or that I had a ton of interest in. That paired with the event debacle being rigged by reddit, and EA pulling their games from Steam, it was a mediocre event for something that only happens twice a year.

Seems like there should be another day tomorrow, but I feel like they're saying today is the last day?

"19th-30th" ...if today's the last day then shouldn't it be 19th-29th? lol

Was hoping they did DayZ at least $5 off again.. Grabbed Far Cry 3 since i've never played it.

So 1pm Pacific tomorrow? Be nice to see some more deals.

But the deals have been changing at 10am pacific every day... so if that is still how they're doing it, there will be deals from 10am to 1pm tomorrow? lol confusing, just hoping to maybe try DayZ.

I don't have to play, but any deal may push me over the edge.

edit; lol the edits, the confusion! 10am makes more sense... but who knows. However ending at 10am Pacific WOULD mean these are the last deals...

I was hoping Castle Crashers was going to go back to 90% because I missed it on the flash sale, but I just gave up waiting and bought it today.  Still pretty cheap.  Looking forward to playing it.

BTW Dust is on sale for a few more hours.  I got it in a humble bundle and I totally loved every minute of it.

Pprobably one of my fav. games. Everyone needs to play this. I feel like I underpaid for it be a significant margin.

What's up with castle crashers / battleblock theater?

i think he's talking about castle story:
I'm kind of eyeing Castle Story (http://store.steampowered.com/app/227860/).

Anyone had any particularly bad experiences with this (considering it is early access)?
Stay away! If you need more info, check this thread on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/295w2c/steam_summer_sale_day_8/cihq86a

but to summarize:

Quote
"Its just a simple case of devs trying to tackle a project that is way over their head. I backed the kickstarter (2 years?) ago and it hasn't really seen meaningful updates since then."

Quote
"As another kickstarter backer, I agree. Castle Story is in no way worth $13 right now and at the rate they're going it will never drop that Early Access tag."

Quote
"From their community managers comments they weren't even using Object-Orientation in the game until the 'refactor'. Before that they managed to bag almost a million dollars in funding and spent an entire year working on the game, missing all deadlines, insulting and banning community members before finally moving to fix it.

And they still, to this day, call anybody who complains a part of the "vocal minority". And claim that no matter what your game is, or how good it is, you'll always get a reaction like this from your fans. And that it's normal."

another shining example of the early access model failing gloriously. when will consumers wise up, and stop paying full price for unfinished products with no guarantees?

i think he's talking about castle story:
Yes, Castle Story = bad (from what I read) and Castle Crashers = Good! I definitely picked up that "Can't Stop Laughing" bundle when it was 90%, and a few extra copies of CC for friends :D
Speaking of which I still have one extra gift copy of "Worms Revolution" if anyone wants it... I guess post dibs in the thread if Mods are ok with that?

My damage was pretty minimal this time around.

- Saints Row IV + season pass  (I still need to finish SR3, hehe)
- Can't Stop Laughing bundle
- State of Decay DLC

I missed the Infested Planet and Steamworld Dig flash sales, but no worries I have too much crap in my backlog to play. :)

Sorry buddy. I just crafted by badge - managed to swap my 10 for a 6. I still have a 9 which I can send to you so you have an additional card to trade with someone else.

I went from 313 to 332. Only spent about $50 total though, so I'll count that as a major win.

This sale was trash, a lot of the games that were on Steam were at least 30% cheaper on GMG and GOG. Valve is losing their touch.

They've raked in $25 million pure profit on this upcoming DotA tourney, they've got their focus elsewhere right now  :))
