I have a Steelseries 6gv2, looking for some custom keycaps...
« on: Tue, 27 March 2012, 10:51:29 »
Hi!

I love this keyboard, and I'm a pretty heavy starcraft II player.  Playing Zerg, I tend to use a few keys very very often.  The Steelseries keyboard is very nice, but I'm already noticing that the keycaps are starting to rub off.  I would need to replace the following keys......

  • The entire number row, minus the -,= tilde and backspace keys.
  • q, e, r, t, u
  • a,s, d, f, h, l
  • z, x, c,v, b, n, m
  • Left Shift

Does anyone know where I can acquire the above keys for this particular keyboard?

Thanks in advance!

If i'm Correct its just a Standard layout. for cherry MX switches you should be able to get something similar to this...

Your best bet would be buying a full set with custom legends (if you want custom legends). If you're okay with normal keycaps, the WASD are very nice, and they have some "normal" sets for sale as well.

If you want something that'll last, check ebay or he classifieds for a set of doubleshots. I was able to get a set of thick WYSE thick doubleshots which cover all the keys you mention except leftshift for $20 shipped. It'll take a really long time to wear them out.

PBT is also long-lasting (It has roughly 6 times the wear resistance of ABS), You can get Steelseries compatible full sets from one of our members here:

Of course due to profile (height) differences, I recommend replacing all the main area keys, not just Q,E,R, etc.

You can use paperclips if you have to, but it'll be a pain for the whole keyboard. The best way to go about it is to get a wire key-puller. They sell them at WASD, Elitekeyboards, and Keyboardco.

well, right before I pulled the trigger I checked my bank account... have to wait until friday, but everything is set for me to hit buy.  I added the wire puller so I can spend a day and mod this bad boy.

Custom Layout for Zerg Players

My Queens are all on 4, which is why the 4 button stands out on the number row. V is the inject command, a is attack move, F is Funal Growth (Yay Infestors!), and F10 open the menu for the quick F10/N for surrendering.

ragecracken occurs :D

Btw:
You won't be able to replace the so-called bigass enter that the 6gv2 has with a set from WASD. But from what I understood you only need these, right?

Yeah, I don't know who at Steelseries thought that was a good idea. Time to buy a Filco!

Wow, that's very colourful. I don't know much about Zerg, but I rather like the colour scheme: It's all function.

Yeah, the orange keys are the hotkeys on the command card that I use a lot or are zerg specific.  the star )4) is my Queen hotkey, and the rest of the blue on the number row are my unit groups/building group hotkeys.  the Green Bioharzard symbol (F) is for Fungal Growth/Build Infestors, and the Green Atom (v) is for larva inject.

To be honest though, I forgot the U, but that's for Ultralisks, and they are generally useless.
