Are the price breakpoints per wood type or overall number of orders?

Are the price breakpoints per wood type or overall number of orders?

Both - the cost of every order goes down as the total order count increases - that's the left-to-right columns.

Each wood type will drop to its own "bulk" price once 4 sets using that as the primary are ordered - that's the top vs bottom chart.

It's a little complicated, but we want to be as transparent as possible.

EDIT: Here's a chart showing the current pricing. Note that quantities are manually updated, so may not include very recent orders: https://goo.gl/eAY71B

EDIT 2: The chart is now auto-updated every few min.

Submitted.  Would be good to get a count of each option to see if we could consolidate some orders to make better pricing.  It is great there are so many options, but on the other hand, there are so many options it may dilute the orders and harder to get to bulk pricing.  Any inquiries from our friends in South Korea?  I hope they buy a lot :D

Pls son, cmon and go wenge!!!

Two questions:

1. Will there be updates on how many orders are made for each until the groupbuy ends?  (A spreadsheet of this with total counts would be awesome.)

2. Per #1, would we be able to switch our orders at the end if there's something that meets a pretty good #, so we can help the GB overall stick to a minimum # of variants for our supplier (and also get better discounts/hit higher MOQ breakpoints)?

Cheers and thanks as always!

anyway, i'm in for wenge/zebrawood. hope some more ppl join me  ;D

What type of finish are you going to do on the Open Grain & Open Pore wood?

Wenge is a pain in the butt to work with, that stuff is literally toxic. Getting a smooth finish with Wenge and Zebra wood is quite a difficult task since the Pores tend to be large and are randomly spread out. Are you going to use clear filler?

Personally, I love high gloss mirror like finish, I use the following steps for most of my project finishes:

Apply appropriate Filler (normally I work a lot with Open Grain wood like Walnut, so I tend to stick with water based filler)
scrape off excess after dry
use burlap to remove rest of excess until all filler is removed
220 grit light sanding
apply sealer coat of lacquer
scuff sanding with 320 grit
8 coats of lacquer then let dry for 8-10 days
Level finish wet sand using dish soap and water and 400 grit
1500 grit
wipe down
1800 grit
wipe down
2400 grit
wipe down
3200 grit
wipe down
3600 grit
wipe down
6000 grit
wipe down
8000 grit
wipe down
12000 grit
wipe down
Finish with 16000 grit
Final wipe down
Pumice Stone mixed with dish soap and water to form a paste... rub it in
Rottenstone powder made into paste with our trusty dish soap and water. Then a whole lot of hard rubbing.

Result: Glass Wood

That treatment would put even glass to shame!

Wood finishing is a bit of a cult, so without starting any religious debates I'll just say that we're keeping it simple, practical, and natural looking - all woods will be completely sealed, durable and highly resistant to sweat/oils from skin. The final texture will be smudge-hiding satin with the grain texture sealed but not completely filled, we're not hiding the personality of these woods. Zebrawood especially is known for displaying huge open pores at various points within the grain, part of the attraction for most folks is the unique nature of these woods.

If you would like to finish it yourself, we can make arrangements to apply whatever sealer you prefer and leave the rest up to you? :)

A little amused that the most expensive wrist-rest is the one that's being bought the most. Also a little amused that it was the end-game of all my suggestions from the previous thread put together, even though no one suggested they agreed with me. :P

Will we hit bulk pricing with zebrawood or wenge since 5 zebrawood/wenge and 5 wenge/zebrawood were picked so far?

Already hit at 4 each, so the GB status chart is currently showing the $20-25 per unit discount for wenge/zebra (that's what I get if I order a full board vs "retail" custom cut, I'm just passing that on). Oak is a smaller discount dollar-wise ~$5-6 discount, and walnut would be ~$10-12 if I remember right. I don't have the numbers right in front of me so don't quote this post, but they're all there in the order form.

EDIT: I should've added that price for *all* styles start dropping incrementally once we get over 20 orders, the chart showing that drop schedule is linked in the order form.

Thank you for your order!

What's the status of the Black Walnut & Padauk etc. people?  Can they get notified that they need to change over their order or drop (re: MOQ)?

What's the general status of when invoices will go out (I assume during or after that concern is resolved)?

No need to switch, those woods species just haven't hit their individual bulk pricing.

We will fill those orders at the current price shown on the chart - they still benefit from the overall cost share savings.

We're wrapping up the group buy, and since you were an "early backer" we don't have a public / forum user name for you (we added that field to the form later).

Would you please reply to this message with your forum / reddit / whatever user name so I can update your order?

Still trying to make up my mind about wood color over here tbh.

Loving the zebra wenge combo, but wondering if it would go well with a gray wooden desk.

In the sample pics black walnut looks fully gray to me, but finishing seems to add a brownish tint to it.

Is the tint really a result of the finish?
Would I be able to get a raw black walnut, and would adding s clear finish maintain the gray color?

Yes, you're exactly right - the raw wood looks flat gray, and any finish will amplify more of the underlying color, no matter the wood. Oil-based finishes tend to penetrate deeper, and make the color deeper / warmer (which is usually exactly what you want).

Would I be able to get a raw black walnut, and would adding s clear finish maintain the gray color?

A water-based finish is an option - these don't penetrate as much and affect the color less, though it still won't be grey. Stained oak could be a possibility also.

Thx for the quick reply bendrexl! =)

So you suggested getting a raw oak and doing a gray stain on it, correct?

Incase I'll choose to try this, would it be possible to get one of the cutting left overs as shown in pic 7 to test stains on by any chance? xD

If you have a specific effect in mind and are trying to match something, I'd look around for some other projects for some real-world example photos.

Since I'll be packing them up myself, that should be doable. I'll have lots of those bits around ;)

All invoices are out - check the item detail on yours and make sure I've got you down for exactly what you ordered. My invoice totals and the order totals all matched up exactly, so I'm pretty confident I got it all in there, but let me know before paying if there's any problem with your invoice.

Well, those 3 remained unpaid (4 sets) - which is a bummer since I had split my pre-production costs across all orders. Those are costs that will have to come out of future sales, but it's not the end of the world. We won't name any names, but please stick by your commitment if you order these small-scale group buys with shared costs - it hurts if you back out after invoices are set and sent out.

Sneak peek at an "ebonized oak" set in progress - first finishing pass, these will be nearly black when finished:

Those are costs that will have to come out of future sales, but it's not the end of the world. We won't name any names, but please stick by your commitment if you for these small scale group buys with shared costs - it hurts if you back out after invoices are set and sent out.

Sneak peek at an "ebonized oak" set in progress - first finishing pass, these will be nearly black when finished:

Sucks to hear that.

I am generally not a fan of oak's grain pattern but damn, you really seem to know what you are doing

Thanks! With this project, every surface gets machined, so I can't really know what I'm getting until it's 90% complete. There's some guessing and imagination involved in selecting and lining up pieces since I don't have xray vision ;)

Materials update: Wenge and Zebrawood orders arrived at the shop from Seattle.

One of the Wenge planks was really, really light in color, I'm going to try to exchange that one - it's just not what you expect when you think "Wenge".

The other has a massive crack across right in the middle but otherwise looks nice. I may be able to work around the cracked area without wasting too much.

Thankfully, the Zebrawood plank they sent is just beautiful!

Thanks all! And yes (barring any incredibly unfortunate series of events), I will have all orders finished and packed for shipping by June 1.

I say "packed", since the actual shipping requires another round of (much smaller) invoices and forms for international orders, etc, but we'll try to get all that done in parallel with the production so there's no delay between "ready" and "shipped".

Boring status update: I re-worked my machine fixture & mounting-hole-drilling jigs to be more precise for aligning the stock for the styles involving inlays. The new jig uses the bottom edge of the rest as its origin for locating the holes, instead of the inside edge as before. This ensures that the inlay is consistently positioned and angled relative to the fixture, which the CNC uses as its origin reference. Totally boring, but will speed up production now that I'm really getting into the multi-wood styles.

In other news, I got the replacement Wenge board - it is dark & beautiful. Almost 12" in width (I ordered 7.5" min), it's so heavy it takes two guys to move it. I'll grab a photo once it's up on the cutting table.

Looking good for the 100% wenge rests!

OMW to the shop now, I'll get an update together for Saturday at the latest with shiny photos.

Quick version: making progress here with the usual minor problems being worked around.  completion of all orders will probably slip to the second week of June but I'll try to get orders in the mail as they're ready. Expect more Saturday!

I'm about 50% through the finishing process on the others. I plan to have ~90% of orders shipped by the 21st, but there may be a few stragglers depending on final inspection and shipping details/invoices.

Anyone else want a Ebonized Oak set that wasn't able to get in on the GB?

Might hold onto it for other split boards, or if I ever buy a VE.A =)

Production update

Zebrawood, Walnut, and Oak styles are all machined, hand-shaped, and sanded - I'm applying the finish coatings on those whenever my hands start to cramp up and need a break from the Wenge styles...

Wenge is hard. It likes to split, gives you splinters if you even look at it wrong, and it is literally just plain hard. Hand-shaping all edges, securing small splits, and cleaning up corners has taken up many nights the last week, and I still have two more full nights of sanding at this rate. (and two more Wenge+Padauk units to glue & machine, had to chase down some more wood without buying an entire board)

I have non-negotiable break for a trip to California for a wedding the 22nd-30th, but I'm busting my butt to get as many ready-to-ship before then (the finish has to be completely cured before I pack them up, so we'll see). The second wave (all remaining orders) will be out the door by July 10.

To be realistic there's still details around shipping I haven't set in stone yet, so worst case the "second wave" is actually all the orders. Thanks for your patience everyone!

Might hold onto it for other split boards, or if I ever buy a VE.A =)

Bummer... if it makes you feel any better, I haven't found one I can afford either! These have a big enough platform to fit many other split boards though; even an ergodox if you don't mind it looking goofy :D

Don't forget to keep mine raw & unfinished tho pls ;)

You got it, and I'll put a couple test scraps in the box also. I'm happy to put a single coat of wax-free shellac just as a sealer if you want also.

Hey all - still alive, still in progress. Family life gets complicated and work crunch/catch-up from the trip away have made it difficult.

Lately I've been having trouble with the finish getting runs/drips on the vertical edges, which have made for a lot of frustrating extra time spent sanding and refinishing. Not sure if it's the warm weather, extra humidity, or what, but I'm still trying to figure it the best process to work around this without adding several finish>wait>sand>repeat cycles... really tedious.

I just noticed your PM, and that's no problem. If you find someone who would be interested in a Wenge set, they are welcome to upgrade - one of the oak+walnut rests cracked, so I'm looking to remake one anyway.

thanks, i guess i need an interpreter because i understood that sentence to mean "invoicing... this week" and "shipping on saturday"

That was confusing - my fault.  Either way I missed the date - why? Simple answer is that I don't want to over/undercharge on shipping, and I haven't had the time to nail down the exact amounts for each of the 12 orders on my bench at the moment.

"Wait, what do you mean you haven't had time, Ben?!? You've had dozens of days, DOZENS!"
True, and I am really feeling the pressure to deliver quality product to all you incredibly patient folks. The more involved answer is that my own personal/IRL issues affecting this project's delays are real, but they're my own responsibility and I don't want to use them as excuses. I also don't want to cut any corners at this stage, so I'll take the time required to get it right. Keep in mind that I'm not exactly getting paid hourly and I can't take on any other projects until this one is done, so I'm very motivated to get this done and out the door!  :)

What I really want to communicate is that there is *no* danger of not getting exactly what you already paid for - the only question is the exact date of delivery, which I am apparently incapable of estimating :P  I am still making steady progress, and it won't be much longer now.

Shipping update: I started sending out invoices for FedEx & UPS shipping, but decided to switch to USPS to save everyone some cash. Anyone in the US who has already received an invoice will get an updated invoice notice, and those who've paid will get a refund for the difference. If you don't want me to use Priority service, let me know.

Also, if anyone's concerned about PayPal's buyer protection window closing soon, feel free to get in touch with me directly - delayed though it is, I don't want anyone feeling like they're trapped or being taken advantage of. Refund/re-up is an option

For those of you receiving these in the mail - please take photos of the box if there's *any* sign of damage. These are all fully-insured, but they (understandably) want evidence of damage if there's a damage claim.

if there's any damage to the rests after opening, please keep the box and all packaging and let me know so I can make a claim and arrange repair/replacement. Thanks!

can you get me some topre?

I can try!

But seriously, I'll be taking it home to Germany and will have to pay import fees if importerd items exceed 400€ value total.

So it probably wouldn't make much sense anyway xD

I'm sending these out as they are ready, since I wasn't able to get any significant discount on shipping them all at once. Yours should be packed up by the 17th - let me know if I should wait.

It's so great to see these in action, and I love the board!

I'm sorry the Padauk set was damaged - it looks like USPS just approved my damage insurance claim, and they haven't asked me for anything else, so I'll follow up with you about returning & repairing it once I confirm they don't need to inspect it.

Looks like I might be able to use these after all.

Someone in China made a VE.A clone... Acrylic sandwich, but same layout, and the assembled kit is only $76, not sure what disassembled costs.

https://world.taobao.com/item/556970472669.htm

You have to contact the seller to request an unassembled kit, or the normal page is an assembled board w/ your choice of switch.

taobao is kinda like eBay in China, and you have to use a proxy to do the shipment (the seller ships to a warehouse in China, then you pay the warehouse to ship it to you). Most of the websites are in Chinese not English, so you have to use a lot of Google Translate or find a buddy that can read/write simplified Chinese.

The first two options are assembled w/ red Gaterons, or brown Gaterons ("tea" is brown), last option looks irrelevant, I think they're just saying no keycaps. So I don't think you can pick the color, just black. Could always ask though.

I might just order 4-5 unassembled kits to help out whoever wants one, only $60 + shipping.

There are a few English Taobao proxies who are happy to take your money and even (partially) translate the site for you.  I've used Taobao Focus before without any problems.  Expect the usual 30 days shipping from China.

Take the item number from the Taobao URL (556970472669 in this case) and plug it into your English proxy's web site.

"Tea" is brown, by the way.   ;)

Appreciate the prompt attention to this! There are spots all over, I can get some more pics later and double check on the wood. There was a heat wave in the area while this was in transit, could that have caused it?

It must have been heat. It was about 90ºF here when I finished them, and I pre-sealed the wood days before applying the catalyzed polyurethane top coats, hard to believe there were enough trapped solvents to do that kind of damage. But, wenge has some pretty serious pores... and even one would be enough to ruin it.

I'm asking around to see what I can do to mitigate this in the ones I have ready to ship right. Apologies to those expecting tracking numbers today, but I don't want to send out any timebombs. Expect an update tomorrow...

thanks for the update, bendrexl. I'm still hoping to show these off at Seattle next weekend!
ok, so it's been a couple more weeks... what's up?

I'll be invoicing for the first 12 units (by order date) this week for shipment on Saturday; that wave will include yours roostrc0gburn :thumb:

thanks, i guess i need an interpreter because i understood that sentence to mean "invoicing... this week" and "shipping on saturday"

so i guess i will see an invoice tomorrow for shipping... when?

What I really want to communicate is that there is *no* danger of not getting exactly what you already paid for - the only question is the exact date of delivery, which I am apparently incapable of estimating :P  I am still making steady progress, and it won't be much longer now.

dont worry guys. wont be much longer now /s

i'll be issuing a paypal dispute this week, as my paypal protection runs out by friday. still reluctantly hopeful that i will get my order, but i have decided it a better tactic to just issue the dispute at 180 days on any group buy from here on out (also in E8 gb, but that is a different matter)

if ben wants to explain himself or produce a product, i may be willing to accept a re-invoice. but, at this point i am pretty done with waiting or hearing any more excuses. i think i have been pretty patient so far, but i have reached my tolerance for flaky gb runners.

Edit: Start your communication through Paypal now so they have an official record of the dispute and you can show your good-faith attempt to reach some sort of amicable conclusion with the seller.  This will expedite your refund if it comes to that.

I fear we don't hold groupbuys to a high enough standard in this community and people take advantage (intentionally or otherwise) of our inability to hold them accountable.  Our only accountability is Paypal and now my dispute duration is burnt and someone else is on the hook for the order I made.  This is a pretty unfortunate position to be in.

Excuses and sadness and tiptoeing around professionalism aren't what gets us solutions to the problem - people are taking money in return for promises to deliver products... and then failing to deliver those products in a reasonable time frame or to the standards/parameters promised at the outset.

Petition to change "Group Buys and Preorders" to "Group Buys and Stockholm Syndrome".

I think Ben is doing what he can given the circumstances.  It is hard for a small operation to account for everything, like the heat bubble thing.  He is standing behind his work and is fixing the issues we have run into.  Sometimes it takes a lot longer for perfectionists to finish something.  I am one of them.  Give him a break.  I am loving the pair I am using.

Nah.  You're welcome to wait forever if you want.  There's not nearly enough communication and/or progress to show that he has any intention of getting these done in an expedient manner, after asking us to wait over 6 months for 29 units.  I'm out.

I am a partially-recovered perfectionist, still working on that (literally; with a paid counselor on a regular basis).  I know I can frustrating to work with - my wife and managers would agree with you 100% - but the flip side of that coin is that I do (eventually) get things done that others can't (or are smart enough to say "no" to).

/confession

You're all welcome to voice your frustrations - I have already refunded some, and I've honored every request for a refund-reup (if I somehow missed your request I'm sorry, hit me again). I can & will refund anyone who's can't wait any longer by this Friday, no questions asked.

Real-life dropped a couple bombs on me this last week, I took Monday off from my full-time job just to catch up. I'm taking extra curing time with controlled heat, and carefully applying sealant coats to minimize any trapped solvents in the deep pores of the exotic woods before applying the top poly coats.

All of the remaining rests are now machined; 10 sets are resealed and ready for final sanding & poly coats (3 hrs/set); 5 sets need final shaping of the inside rest edge before beginning the finishing process (1hr/set for shaping).

I am still stoked to receive my rest, didn't mind the delays much and still have faith Ben will deliver an awesome piece

FoC_Tow, yours was one of the remakes that was just machined last week, I've got it shaped and sanded. Since there's no finishing needed on my end, I'll have it ready to ship tonight (along with your walnut & maple scraps).

I gotta get back to work here, sorry if I missed

All good advice - just be aware that PayPal immediately places a hold for the full refund amount on the seller's account, which is an un-fun surprise when I'm invoicing others for their shipping and those funds disappear down a hole. Again, I completely understand protecting your investment, and if it's your last day of buyer protection then I'd probably do the same.

On the other hand, if you can wait until Thursday I'll have plenty of funds to cover everything I need to ship AND whoever wants refunded. (Or you can open a PayPal case if you prefer)

Thanks for the update, Ben.  When you are ready, can you list out what other wrist rests you have in stock due to refunds and such?  I might want to get one more set.  Thanks.

Given the time I have tied up each of these rests, I'd love a chance to resell the extras at a premium to try and bump my hourly rate to at least minimum wage ;)  That said, I do want to take care of everyone who has stuck it out so far - I'll see what I can work out, after all the dust has settled and all the buyers are happy with their rests.

Ironic you chose Pebble as an example given how it turned out.

I'm missing the irony, I guess - just pointing out that I have more that a couple GBs with outstanding $$$ / product that are more than a year old.

Pebble's a great example of how *not* to run an honest crowdfunding campaign. The PT2 and Core never had a chance of actually being manufactured. They were trading on Pebble's reputation to pump up their valuation, knowing they still needed a metric crapton of funding to just stay afloat, much less get the campaign rewards delivered.

Thanks again for the re-invoice Ben. It's the final result that counts for me - and with the very swift and uncomplicated re-invoicing I now have even an extended production period covered :)

I spent a few hours after the fam was asleep last evening, and got 6 of the 11 sanded + prepped for final coat. that leaves ~2.5 more hours of hand-sanding this evening, not sure if that will leave time to apply the final coat but I'm going to try.

10 sets are cured and ready for shipment! I cut all the custom rubber feet, and got 3 packed up for shipping late last night.

I'll be sending out the remaining invoices for shipping on these 10 orders (really just a few as most of these were invoiced already), and printing labels tonight. So watch for an invoice if you haven't got one yet, and please remind me of any address changes!

Thanks for the update, Ben.  I hope people will realize that it is worth the wait when they see the end product.  I have been using my at work for the last few weeks.  It has been rock solid.  It is much more stabler than the acrylic pair that I have, and that acrylic pair was fairly stable.

How is the repair with mine?  Thanks.

So glad to hear it! All of these rests will be heavier than plastic, and I hope the custom feet work well in smoothing out any natural movement by the wood itself over time.

How is the repair with mine?  Thanks.

It looks flawless - even knowing exactly where the cracks were, I can barely see any trace. I'll be refinishing the underside of it tonight (top is done).

"Tea" is brown, by the way.   ;)

don't use taobaofocus.  Use taobaoring.com  Taobao focus doesn't even let you combine orders which is so ****ty

combining orders was/is/will be always available at Taobao (https://tbfocus.com) FOCUS. We usually do not combine orders which have been already packed for shipping at our warehouse, but you still can ask customer support to help. Otherwise, you can combine paid orders without any issue. Otherwise, please let me know your story.

don't pack stuff as soon as it comes in again, I will never use your services again or recommend them over taobaoring or superbuy.  you also make people pay for stuff upfront even if out of stock.

^^^

taobaoring and superbuy are monumentally better

Who needs any of that? Just use Chrome, set it up to translate Chinese, and order direct from TaoBao. They have their own freight forwarding to US.

Mine came in with no bubbling!

Still getting used to the angle but very comfortable so far, and looks great of course.

Where 'dem photos at? ;)

Any updates on my order?

I've been winterizing the house, and transitioning out of my old job / into a new one, which has sucked the last 4 weeks of my life into a black hole.

My plan is to get enough room freed up in the shop to get my workbench setup again, and get the last stragglers done over the long holiday weekend.
