Will my Model M yellow?
« on: Wed, 07 May 2008, 03:21:02 »
Hi,

when I got my 1992 model m a year ago it was like a new keyboard. It still doesn't show any signs of yellowing. I just realized that it might have been in storage all the time thus avoiding all the bad UV rays.

I'm not going to use it for some time now. Will it yellow if I keep it out in the open? Or did IBM use superior plastic?

Thanks.

I've a 1988 Model M (part #1391401) that I use daily.  It receives moderate amounts of sunlight and hasn't yellowed at all.  I'll post pictures of it if you'd like.

I'd not worry about your keyboard yellowing.

Cheers,

I've seen a lot of M's and I've yet to see one with significant yellowing.

Great, thanks.

I was thinking of this one here on clickykeyboards.com:

But it's probably just the light.

Well, mine isn't that bad... but I did buy mine used and it does have some yellowing.  Certainly not as white as a new one was.

I wouldn't recommend exposing it to sunlight if it's at all possible not to.  I have many video game consoles that were ruined by even minimal sunlight (japanese white saturn, SNES, dreamcast).

Here is a brand new one (assembled last fall) compared to one assembled in 1993 and one assembled in 1991:
