RAMAGE key Caps-HIBERNATING.......
« on: Sun, 10 January 2016, 18:53:04 »
My living situation has changed and I no longer have a place to use my equipment so I'm putting key cap making on hold indefinitely. I hope to get back into it in the future but there is no saying when or if that will happen.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the sales and showed interest in my work. It's been a good run.

[size=78%]This material is inlace acrylester, it's an acrylic like plastic used in pen turning that I've made into some key caps as an experiment.  This raffle is for 6 unique prototypes which means they are not meant for daily use. This was more of a material study to see what inlace acrylester looks like as a key cap and to see if it was feasible to try in the future.  I will tell you for certain that the stems are undersized and have a good possibility of cracking if you force them on your board.  If that's not for you and you actually like using your key caps I recommend sitting out the giveaway.  The form will be open until Friday morning.

www.ramagecaps.comThe Moai is the name given to the statues on Easter island. I was really drawn to their calm and serene look and knew they'd be perfect to make out of wood.

The raw materials used for this sale are Ebony, African Blackwood (the 7th hardest wood in the world), Curly Maple, and Stabilized Maple burl. All caps are cut on a CNC machine, meticulously sanded down to 1500 grit, then coated with Satin Polyurethane.

What about Moai Material Preference??
More
You can state a material preference, but if you win a Moai from a material that you didn't specify, I'll skip over your name and go on to the next person. So you have the best chance of winning if you don't have a material preference.
To give a specific example: I'll grab a cap then do an RNG to find the winner of that specific cap. If the winner said something like "Ebony only" but they just won a blackwood cap, I'll skip over their name and go to the next person who might have said something like "any cap." Once someone wins a cap, they are taken out of the pool. If you win but get passed because of your preference, you stay in the pool.  So if someone says "any cap" their chances of winning are a lot higher.

The caps are OEM R4 profile with MX stems and will be finished in three different ways :
  • Matte polyurethane- Allows you to feel the texture of the wood and looks just slightly darker than a raw cap. The polyeurathane I use is "fingerprint resistant"
  • Gloss polyurethane- Feels like smooth plastic, wood looks "wet" with a very high gloss finish
  • Satin polyurethane- In between matte and gloss, a good happy medium
I will also have a raw caps with no finish.

I would love to see buckling spring wooden keycaps, and I'd guess they would be easier to make then the cherry versions except that they need to be thinner on the sides to go over the stem piece with clearance to the next key.

Any chance of an unfinished version as well? I'd love to stain it the same color as the wood insert I made for my JD40.

Ya that's a good idea, I'll add that option to the OP. I'll try to have two or three of each finish with each wood

Very nice! Looking forward to the sale!
But why so expensive shipping? Priority?

The cheapest and safest way I found to do CONUS shipping was through the USPS flat rate boxes for $5.95. I looked into international shipping again just now and made a discovery. For USPS's first-class international service, an 8 ounce package is priced at $12.33 to most countries. Some countries are slightly more, some are slightly less.  I'm going to assume if I get any international sales they'll be @ the $12.33 price point.  I only tried one country when I quoted my original INT shipping price and got a value of around $13 but I wasn't able to duplicate that value anywhere except Lithuania for $13.70 so I'm changing the INT shipping to $12.40. Thanks for the question.

These are really cool! Are you using stabilized wood to make these? Expansion/contraction could be a bit worrisome on delicate stems. My guess is that stabilizing would help to mitigate some of that.

Ha! That's great.  Best medium for that would be stone (that'd be something to see for a keycap) but it fits the wood so well too...

Thanks! Ya, I definitely agree about the stone. I'm thinking about trying a darker more even wood like African Ebony. Light and grainy wood doesn't really match the features.

Finished this guy today. Still have some refining to do though.
