Exactly. So, perhaps, when the situation calms down, things will be more clear. All this drama makes me sick. We just need to get along, not fight... :/
This site is about keyboards, not capitalism or commercialism, not about the Terms of Service, not about whether we should threadcrap or not. This site is for keyboards.
I am here in a community to help others, enjoy myself and maybe buy a few things here or there (or trade for them :P). When you live in a real life community, do you get told not to make money or what you should do with what is yours? Do you get told not to walk in the market and have ambient conversations with your friends? Just food for thought, please don't pick me apart and answer my questions. They are rhetorical.
when the rules protect the Sherrytons and cactuxes of the forum, profiteering at the expense of the community is inevitable.

I'd like to ask the moderators, why was this ban left as "not set to expire" ?
The rules say that a permanent ban comes after warnings, temporary bans, etc.  If the mods gave a permaban without warning like that, it's against the rules. If, on the other hand, they neglected to put an expiration date, they made it (inadvertently) look like an abrubt permaban, causing all this drama.

Any mods care to comment or rectify this situation ?

Since the reboot of the site, moderation has been fairly light compared to how it was and the staff is still finding its way.  SMF does things a little differently than some are used to and bans have been rare.  Thus, the snafu in the ban type.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

limitation on the software that's the reason, it was never meant to be a permaban for any of the people that got banned

reaper has cleared it up to some people in this thread already

Ok, if the software can't provide an expiration date, then the ban reason hand-typed by the mod performing the ban should mention the ban duration.
Example:

"You have been band for 5 days due to threadcrapping." Or add "the ban will be lifted on February 2nd".

oh ffs dude, it has been explained a million times already. the 'non-expire' was not intentional.

Ok, but if the software has a limitation, the typed message needs to accommodate that. Otherwise it will unintentionally happen again.

it doesn't and even if it does, it's a stupid thing to get worked up over... sorry if that's glib but this whole situation is stupid and frankly not something that anybody should care about. there are plenty of real problems in the world that could use some nerdy attention.

Ok, my turn to answer...

The old forum code had issues that had bad results for everyone.  The new forum software is, well, new.  At least to the mods and admins.  Since the hullabaloo we have been trying to gather input (see my other thread), fix any problems (all fixed now), and come up with and document specific procedures, including how-tos and communication protocols. Those include more visibility, more specific TOS details, better communication, and more transparency.  Those will be published, explained and discussed when they are ready.

Turning back to this thread, sth is correct.  The situation has been explained pretty fully.  Nobody died, nobody was permabanned, and to be perfectly fair, many people have come up with useful ideas for making all of this better in the future.  Thank you to everyone who did so.

So.   We are not going to close the discussion, we are going to move it to a thread about how to do better.  It is time to close this thread and move to the one I started for the specific purpose of this discussion.  Everyone who wants to discuss site moderation policy, procedure and communication, please go here:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39772.0

In other news, there is an attic full of F-122 keyboards that need to be discussed, SP has a new site and a bunch of new stuff, and Zelda Hearts (empty and half) are back in stock at Techkeys.us.

Thanks one and all!

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!
