Hi all,

With my current project soon moving out of my hands I am starting to gauge interest for something I’ve been wanting for quite a while. There won’t be a lengthy explanation as to why I chose this theme - I just like it; having been surrounded by nordic design since I was young I’ve grown quite fond of this dark navy colour. This is the first full keyset I’ve designed so I’m keeping it nice and simple with just 2 kits and an uncontroversial colour scheme.

GMK Deep Navy is a sleek and professional keyset featuring custom dark navy keys with WS1 legends.

Base:

The base kit provides compatibility for 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 1800 and full-size boards, with support for ISO. Accent keys are included for those who want to bring a bit of flare to their board.

Addition:

A spacebars kit with 40% and Alice-layout compatibility.

RAMA Cap:

Anodised aluminium with white enamel infill.

Deskmat:

Nordic night - designed by Sour.

Vendors and Pricing:

North America: CannonKeys

Base: $125
Addition: $33
RAMA: $38
Deskmat: $17

Europe: MyKeyboard

Base: €135
Addition: €35
RAMA: €41
Deskmat: €19

Canada: Deskhero

Base: $184 CAD
Addition: $49 CAD
RAMA: $45 CAD
Deskmat: $26 CAD

Southeast Asia: Monokei

Base: $180 SGD
Addition: $48 SGD
RAMA: $58 SGD
Deskmat: $25 SGD

Oceania: Daily Clack

Base: $208 AUD
Addition: $55 AUD
RAMA: $69.50 AUD
Deskmat: $27 AUD

China: zFrontier

Base: ¥898
Addition: ¥235
RAMA: ¥270
Deskmat: ¥120

Rest of Asia: zFrontier

Base: $145
Addition: $35
RAMA: $39
Deskmat: $20

Packaging:

Logo on front, nordic night on back - designed by Sour.

I recommend you take a look at the renders on a computer screen as phone screens boost contrast especially on darker colours, making this seem a lot more dark than intended.

Special Thanks:
To Abec13 for the great kit feedback and renders as always
To upas for taking this project on and being incredibly helpful with educating me about the GMK process
To Sour for the spectacular deskmat and packaging, and for being so cooperative in the process
To the Necros for putting up with my pestering questions since the beginning
To Kate for the help with the artisan design
To the rest of the vendors for agreeing to run the project <3

Hey everyone, please view on a computer screen, not your phone. Many phone displays these days are AMOLED which boost contrast and makes this appear much darker. :)

Looks black to me.

Will find it in my PC - but so far I like the concept :)

Edit: Expecting a very dark Cypher, this may be a nice pairing. Good luck! :)

I'm kinda wondering if instead of simply ditching the (white) accent keys, there could instead be medium blue accent keys to serve the same purpose (with the same white for the legends/icons).

Also, ISO terminal style: good! (but delete the tertiary legend (*) from the R4 <> key, as it looks weird as the only one in the entire board)

(*) I can't believe I'm advocating taking a tertiary legend out, but that's what things have come to.

Beautiful. One of those sets which could be a must buy, staple of my collection... so long as the GB price is reasonable.

Really nice colorway.

Hopefully we get a similar green version one day. Nothing wrong with people getting inspired and coming up with more good ideas, even if they're similar to previously existing ideas.

Thanks for the support <3

I've received a lot of good feedback on discord too, however one thing that quite a few people have said is that the colour looks a little too dark on phone, so as Abec said I strongly advise looking at it on your computer screen instead since the colour on there is just as I want it. I added a picture of 282C with GMK WS1 to the main body of the post.

Here's a quick comparison of 282C and GMK CR:

Wish some of these sets were in the reverse dye pbt like Hive. It's hard to justify paying prices for sets that will shine in 4/5 months. Regardless of how beautiful this is.

Just makes them unsellable honestly. Maybe if they shined equally. But no one is going to sell/trade for some heavily worn wasd keys. Haha. I just don't get shine love. But maybe I never will :D

I don't game, so they wear relatively evenly via typing. Shift and space get the most shine on them. But you're right, they'll never wear evenly. Part of the 'patina' of a keyboard for me. Though, I also don't intend to resell them.

you can manually sand and polish keycaps to make them all evenly shiny and smooth, some guy on r/customkeyboards did it and it looks pretty damn good imo

also, love the keyset, simple color combo but it works so well. definitely going to be watching this set closely.

Yeah. I don't want to derail. I'll look into maybe polishing mine somehow. I don't even really mind if it's uneven, just when it's massively uneven. There's def an awkward stage that id rather skip, if that makes any sense. All this aside, assuming I find a good way to polish, I'm getting this set.

Needs to have the Pantone join the pantheon of blue caps in pixelpushers bathroom lighting for blue cap comparison

https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=102663.0;attach=227172;image
This isn't the bright lighting bathroom photo I'm referring to, but some other part of pixelpusher's house. My guess is that dark navy is still darker than the Striker accent...

Could you add two 1.5u Code and two 1u Alt keys to the base for tsangan compat for users the prefer GUI next to the spacebar? Similar to what GMK Wavez did.

Second. I'm a little surprised at how few GMK sets provide this setup.

If this is included somehow, I'm 100% in. Even if there's 1.5u novelties…

Have you done it? I've thought of trying it for 3D printer. You risk melting them though. Would be scared to do it with my keycaps. Haha

As a fellow man who highly enjoys nordic design and navy blue, this is up my alley. An affordable dark horse is just what I wanted.

What I don't care for is the white accent keys. I would prefer something more muted, but a custom color would drive up the price, something that's not ideal for a simple set. Have you tried grey accent instead? Kind of ties in on the nordic design thing. If the accent keys don't drive up the price too much either way then it's not a big deal, I just won't use them.

I love that you implemented simple 40s support in base. Personally I'd want ISO and numpad seperated (especially if you add UK ISO), but I can also see how you'd want to keep things simple. If not then I'd really like a slimmed spacebar kit to be implemented in base (I'd personally only need 2.25 and 2.75, but have no insight on how popular the other bars are). Extra B would be a nice option in base, but not a huge deal.

Either way you have my full support. :thumb:

+1 for this... will buy it either way since it's perfect color in my opinion, but would like to be able to have correct legends on mac setup.

Also, please leave the white accents...

Would also love a grey case render! Black is probably the most difficult option to actually see the keys, haha.

Thanks again for all the kind words and feedback.

Based on the feedback I've received, I've made a couple changes to the base kit:
- kept the same ISO support but changed the legends
- added 2x 1.5u code and 1x 1u alt (1 of the alts was already there)

For now I'm keeping the basic 40s support but I'm considering getting rid of it. Besides that, I'm pretty happy with kitting. As for renders, I'll commission some more soon - not sure what boards I'd want right now so I'm open to hearing suggestions. Finally, it may be early but if any vendors are interested in running this feel free to get in touch :D

I like the Pantone you picked. Two suggestions for the base kit:
  • Add R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn. These are popular options for the right column on 65% and 75% boards.
  • Change R3 1u #~ to \|. If you add full ISO-UK support, #~ is fine, but otherwise stick to \|.

I'm very conflicted on this. I personally prefer \| as the R3 legend but when I asked around it seemed more people preferred two different legends.
As for the PgUp and PgDn keys, I'll probably pass on those. The base kit is already fairly big and it's already pretty standard compatibility for 65% and 75% boards.

Accent arrows are a big maybe right now, but I'm swaying towards not adding them. Also on the topic of accents, I'm going to be sticking to WS1 to keep it nice and simple.

If having different legends is why you opted to go with the out-of-place #~, then just have \| on R3 and <> on R4. This is one of the standard options for US ISO.

As for the PgUp and PgDn keys, I'll probably pass on those. The base kit is already fairly big and it's already pretty standard compatibility for 65% and 75% boards.

Keep in mind that most new sets (incomplete list here) opt to include these keys, while less than half of them include 2× 1.5u Code and an extra 1u Alt like you have here.

As for the PgUp and PgDn keys, I'll probably pass on those. The base kit is already fairly big and it's already pretty standard compatibility for 65% and 75% boards.

If avoiding adding too many keys is a factor AND "the other side" is okay with partial English (UK) support, you could go with the "appeasement" route, as is being done in GMK Copper: have three alpha keys instead of two: R4 \| (common to both options), R3 \| (English (USA)) and R3 #~ (English (UK)).

I would love to see renders of this set on E white or PC. Just for the sake of visualization. Probably not a good idea to render a deep blue set on a deep blue background (albeit looks real nice though)

I also second this motion! This deep navy set would really pop on an E-white keyboard!

Could we get some kind of color comparison with the Rudy blue? I know they're similar, but I want to see just how similar they are before I decide whether to join this.

Keep in mind that most new sets (incomplete list here) opt to include these keys, while less than half of them include 2× 1.5u Code and an extra 1u Alt like you have here.

Thanks for putting together that list Constexpr. I can now confirm that it is not just me using R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn, but a solid list of NEW MOQ'd sets to include these keys. Nice to see the data supporting this trend.

If possible I'd love a render with text mods, sorta comes across as one that would do well with text or text + icon.

Hi guys, just a quick update:

I know this is potentially a long way off, but I got 3 vendors to work with me on this project:

EU: mykeyboard.eu
OCE: dailyclack.com
CA: deskhero.ca

Still looking for a North American vendor, so do send me a message if you're interested (more active on discord, *tom#1646).

Next, I've made a couple revisions to the kit based on feedback I've received. For now, no 40s in base because I'd rather have full support than something very minimal. This kit design isn't by any means final but it's what I'm considering doing right now - of course this could change with what a vendor wants to run.

There are 3 ways this receives 40s support:
- more interest, meaning I'm more comfortable having a less popular child kit with this
- a vendor coming on board that wants a 40s kit and is happy to buy it out
- 40s being incorporated into the base (à la Finer Things)

The reason I'm not doing the last one is because I don't think that there is enough 40s love to justify everyone else having to spend more to have that many redundant keys in the base. Then again, I may be wrong. But this is how it's looking right now.

What's up with the R4 <>-key when there are already the two separate < and > keys in R4?
Shouldn't the R3 \|-key be in R4 and keys for @, and  #~ be in R3 for basic ISO(-UK) support?
At least that's what most base kits provide for basic ISO support if I'm not mistaken.

You're mixing up the national layouts English (USA) terminal style and English (UK). See http://www.farah.cl/Keyboardery/Why-Do-Keycap-Sets-have-so-many-Copies-of-the-Backslash-Pipe-Key/#row4yes for a good explanation of what goes in the "ISO R4" key.

Ah, thanks a lot! I never think about the "US ISO" and most of the time you see either full ISO-UK support with additional keys for the number row in the base kit or the mixture I have described.

But tbh I'm even fine with the current direction as long as I get ISO support at all, since ISO-UK isn't my national layout either.

Good updates. A few more things for your consideration, though not a must by any means: R4 numpad 00, R1 numpad =, System and Sys instead of Code (cause, let's be honest, Code makes no sense).

As someone else explained, it's for US ISO. I wanted basic ISO compatibility and this is the best way to get that while providing for a full layout. For anyone that's interested, the reason I didn't add the tertiary legend that's sometimes included is because in my opinion it doesn't really make sense with everything else being dual legends.

40s still in consideration. Trying to think of a creative way to add support but I might elect to go for a separate child kit still.

I have the other perspective on numpad support. Would be more likely to purchase a comprehensive base kit than spend on several child kits. Maybe like Burgundy R3.

good to hear!

I may try to do a small run of this in SP SA through dixie's fulfilment services (MOQ is typically much lower) before a GMK run, wondering if there would be any interest for something like this? Just one kit with decent compatibility, nothing crazy.

Also, gauging interest in a couple changes to the spacebars kit:

Yes. I’d be stoked for a small run in the very near future.

I ordered some chips from SP last week so I'll get a quote once I've decided on the colours. If I do run it, expect a single minimal base kit (see magic city; reached out for quotes with a larger kit and the price is way too high for my liking)

Still unsure of whether I think this has enough interest to run but I'll do a small kit update regardless in the coming few days. Pretty busy with life and some other projects right now so I haven't managed to devote all that much time / resources into this yet.

By the way, GMK set has quite a few of interest from Korean community. It gets possitive feedback with Base kit's components.

hi everyone, got a small update today:

made some changes to the kits.

base:
- changed 'code' to 'super'
- removed some bottom row mods

addition:
- removed all the spacebars shorter than 2u
- added b
- added staggered 40s compat

base changes:
code to super is a trend I'm seeing a lot more and though I'm pretty impartial myself, super makes more sense. I know some people may be happy about the bottom row mods but I didn't think they'd be necessary when it's already such a large base kit. If I do get a vendor that wants to split numiso then these might make a return in a tkl base kit.

for the addition changes:
of course it used to be called 'spacebars'. I didn't think this was as fitting anymore given how it now is also a 40s compatibility kit. as for the keys, these three give proper compatibility to a large number of layouts, and barely change the cost. some people elect to put 'b' in base, and I originally planned on having the 40s keys there but if you use any of those you'll most likely prefer to have the correct spacebars, so this makes much more sense.

also abec changed the shade of navy on the iron 165, should make it clearer to see the set now

Glad to hear this. Code has never made much logical sense to me; it's pretty much an unfortunate circumstance how it came to be used as an OS key legend with the early GMK TA sets; and it looks worse too, as you get two capital C's next to each other with it sitting next to Control. Super is a better choice all around in my book.

That being said, I'm going to keep advocating for the System key, as I think it makes for an even better choice than Super. :P Whereas the name Super corresponds to what the key does on just *nix systems, System is a more generic legend that makes sense across any OS. Moreover, I think the Sys variant for 1u keys looks better than 1u Super since the legend is not as cramped on the key (from what I've seen, this is one of the main reasons why some people prefer Code over Super). With System/Sys you get the benefits of both and the drawbacks of neither. This is why we opted to help produce the System mold for GMK Yugo instead of going with Super.

Yeah, right?! Should be a great pairing!

I'm primarily interested in SA although I know I'm in the minority. Just remembering that ttom openly thought aloud about an SA run.

Yeah. I mean if this delivers and looks great and photographs well (for all that reddit eye candy), I'm sure it'll end up arriving in different profiles eventually.

On the subject of SA:

I ordered some colour chips a couple weeks ago to get an idea of stock colours that could work. I'm attaching a picture of them below though my camera isn't very colour accurate. I think I'd rather pursue this in GMK first and then after I could consider my options with SA (though I'd still like to do this). My initial thoughts are WFK/WA on BBI.

Disclaimer: these colours are much warmer in the pictures than in reality

Hmm. Could just be the photo. But I expected it to be darker. Like close to black. Realise a lot of it is renders but I feel like the blue of Kat Atlantis was more deep navy than those.

And excuse my naivety but are those slight shades of ws1? Cause ws1 was one of the reasons I found this set interesting. To match mods and alphas with other ws1 sets.

I’ll make sure it is just right for the GMK run, and will soon be ordering a colour chip for this purpose. Those are SP ABS chips, and the whites are just the three closest shades of white to WS1 that I saw when previewing the colours on their web page, so I ordered them. Also, the picture isn’t very colour accurate and makes the chips looks a whole lot warmer than they do in reality.

For GMK I’ll be doing a lot of colour sampling to make sure I have the perfect shade matching the renders so no need to worry about that, and the WS1 will stay as it is.

Count me out until the SA run, just because that's the profile I'm using these days. WFK on BBI sounds perfect, and I would instantly cop it.

The GMK run will be a hit, though - best of luck!

I think as dark as possible for the navy is where this set will really shine.
Also are icon mods already decided upon? Are text+icons or just text possible if there's interest?

I think so too - I didn’t mean to give any wrong ideas with those colour chips. They were the darkest blue offerings SP had for SA so that’s what I ordered. As I said, I’ll stay true to the renders for GMK, and will do extensive colour matching if needed to make sure it’s the exact colour I intended it to be.

Icon mods won’t going to be changing.

Hi everyone, hope you're all staying safe. Now that my other current project is pretty much in vendor hands I'll be working on this more.

First off, I've updated the addition kit to include basic ortho support:

I've also found a North American vendor who will be announced soon, and we've reached out for quotes with these current kits. I've ordered a Pantone chip too but this may have to wait with my proxy in America for the time being given how we just went into full lockdown yesterday. No GB date as of yet but expect late Q2 / early Q3.

In the meantime, I added some stunning renders by Abec on his new board, the Adélie to the main post.

Super sleek!

Have you thought about adding the dark navy blue on white Alpha keys (like the Enter and Esc keys)?

The ability to have that combination would look sick in my opinion.

Good morning everyone - have some updates today:

Firstly, I'm very happy to announce that this set will run on CannonKeys this May!

Pricing: will update this once I have pricing from all my proxies.

Artisans: have reached out to a prominent artisan maker in the community, will show what we come up with here when I can.

Deskmat: working with someone with some very good past work for this + packaging for the set.

Pantone chip: ordered 2 day shipping to my proxy in NA, but that's now been delayed to around 3-4 weeks. Will update here once I get my hands on it.

Also have some more renders on the way from Abec  :thumb:

It's anodised aluminium matched to Pantone 282 C with white enamel infill. Prices for this and the kits should be up in a day or two, just waiting for it all to be finalised  :p

Understood. BUT :) would have liked the white alphas with dark / navy letters. We often see BoW but not much navy blue on white...

GMK Rudy looked somewhat like this but with what I believe is a lighter blue . It may not be the same dark navy, but someone out there ordered Rudy and Dark alphas and would sell just the light alphas...

Excited for this GB! I know you're leaning towards not adding accented arrow keys, but maybe as a stretch goal or something? After reaching an amount past MOQ or w/e.

Like blue on white? That would be cool...

so hyped for this GB. This has got to be my favorite GMK set so far! Great work!

I mean can we just tie this up.

Keyset of the Year 2020: GMK Deep Navy

I appreciate that a lot <3

I'm not really a fan of accent arrows and the current kitting won't have them, but I guess I could try adding them if we reached a higher MOQ than what this is priced at. No promises on something like that right now though - that's something for later.

Accent arrows suit the 7v, Sat75, and Evolv type layouts with accented spacebars and knobs to match. Mainly boards with separated arrow keys (65% included). On other boards they are harder to fit in.

I'm a fan of accent ESC + Arrows on 65% boards without the accented Enter key. It's all just personal preference in the end tho.

With the current situation I’m cancelling most of my buying plans related to keyboards, with the exception of 7V and this.

I feel the same about 65% boards and accents.

Would it be a good idea to change out the icon modifiers in regards of the reported QC issues on WoB extension?

Icons won't be changing here. There are a least a dozen GMK sets getting produced before this with icons so if it wasn't an isolated incident with WoB/BoW (which I suspect it was) I'm hoping it'll be fixed by then.

It also happened with WoB Hiragana, fyi. But yeah, not jumping to conclusions is the right thing to do.

Re: Icons

Seeing the most recent response from GMK regarding this issue I have high hopes for this set. On the off-chance that any issues would occur, I’m pretty confident they’d be fixed anyway. Statement from GMK’s CEO is in this thread:

I think this set works with pretty much every neutral colour. Some good options in GB right now are the 7V, Decent65 and Prophet :)

Though this is something I would’ve liked to include it wouldn’t have been feasible. I think physical ISO is a must, however it’s unfair to favour one type of European layout over an other beyond that.

A massive ISO kit would be the only one I’d ever consider doing, but unless the set does very good numbers (1K+) I wouldn’t expect it to hit 50 MOQ, and I don’t think this set will go into that region.

I haven't bought a keycap set since GMK Space Cadet's GB but I am 100% all in on this. Thinking the Space Cadet alphas might look good with the Deep Navy mods as well. All will pair well with my future blue 7V...
