Since I just started posting a short while ago (this is probably my 2nd or third post), this might be the wrong place to be asking this but how do i get a custom key made? I would love to have this logo from Portal made into my escape key (without the fancy background). Anyone else interested?

Edit: I'm overwhelmed by the level of interest demonstrated by you guys! :biggrin1: I'm just a bit surprised why no one came up with this idea before :tongue:
Here is an update of what's been going on in this thread (so you don't have to read through all the pages :happy:)

We will be getting sets of 13 white PBT keycaps with mostly black legends except a few splashes of tasteful and appropriate color

Would be interested as well, but sinis is right : you won't be going anywhere without having a svg file first.
Unfortunately I'm no good at doing this.

Since I'm a newbie, could someone explain what a svg file is and why its important when making custom keys?

svg is vector graphics. You can scale it up to an unlimited size without running into pixelation issues. Usually printing companies require svg files to print.

I could make a svg file if u want, as this seem to be an interesting key. But for now.. dinner first! :dance:

EDIT: all the portal icons looks like it'll be great on a keyboard. Especially the companion cube!!

I gave it a try, but do not know the requirements that SP will ask for. Actually the icons you posted might be more suited to make it.

on a slightly unrelated note, does anyone know where i could possibly find this keycap? [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 26036[/ATTACH] it was apparently a limited edition cap that came with leopold boards. it's actually what got me thinking about portal keycaps

oh wow..i was doing some digging on deviantart and found someone who made an svg file for most of the portal iconshttp://zeptozephyr.deviantart.com/art/Vectored-Portal-Icons-207347804?offset=10 anyone know if can crop out specific parts of the svg file?

@ichitz, its a shame that there isn't a standalone companion cube icon.

there's one at the top where a person is hugging the cube though..

Great idea. For working with svg, I use adobe illustrator, but a free alternative is inkscape. Likely you would be dealing with signature plastics, so their size requirement is 0.427" square maximum black on transparent background.

Would totally buy several of these, hell we should make a 12 key Function row set. I've still been too lazy to go find Illustrator but if I get around to it I'd be happy to make some of these, particularly the escape one as mentioned, the cake and the companion cube. COMPANION CUBE!

Simple, select just the one you want and copy it into a new file (with the correct dimensions for SP to use). Then apply tweaks as necessary to conform to SP's requirements. Save and you're done.

No, the companion cube must have a heart in the middle otherwise it's just a regular ordinary cube :biggrin:

So..even though the default image is white on transparent background (the black was just added in for visibility), signature plastics wants black on transparent? If I wanted to get white on black keycaps or white on...lets say..red keycaps, then they'll make it happen from the black on transparent svg file that i give them?

hey ichiitz, a lot of the icons have been made into the svg already thanks to Zeptozephyr on deviantart. The link to the svg file is http://www.deviantart.com/download/207347804/vectored_portal_icons_by_zeptozephyr-d3fg6l8.zip i'm trying to save you from doing extra work :biggrin:

though editing them is somewhat a pain imo because im a noob at inkscape and i when i just fill in the white with black, it doesn't look as good as the original.

anyone have any suggestions?

Okay so I went and picked out the 12 I thought were the best... I was tempted to circle the other companion cube one too but I tried to get all the different kinds and also tried to only pick ones that would show up well in the molds, from what I recall there is a minimum line size and spacing issue that could be a problem with some of these. Let me know if you agree with my picks and any others you would really like to see. I suppose we could have a big vote for the best twelve but I'm not sure how the polling system on here works so that could be a nightmare. I doubt it has an option where it says "pick 12 of 30 choices." This way might be best and if any don't work we can pick other ones. I wanted to do the do not drink one but the water dots I don't think are going to work.

i agree, some lines in the icons are just way too thin for it to come out nice. Some, like the 'do no drink water' could be modified a little I believe. It's best to know what the minimum line/spacing width is from SP.

Would anyone be willing to make a svg for [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 26056[/ATTACH]. While originally a special edition keycap for Leopold keyboards, I would love it if I could get this one as a custom cap for my esc, while using the others for my function keys.

At the top right of the picture. Where it says Portal 2. If you can put ESC in there isntead and use the same colors with the blue and orange, then that'd be awesome.

That too, I like the function row better since there are so many good looking ones but I suppose it depends on how many are workable. Hell we could even do 18 or 21 of them and pimp out all the Function keys and the 9 keys above the arrow keys. It'd be a huge group buy, to the point of where we would likely need to do it as an entire set to keep it straight but I'd pay some coin for that for sure. If we got 50-100 full set orders for that it wouldn't be too expensive either.
